Praising the work and contribution of Bengali writer and activist Mahasweta Devi, director of Bengali film ‘Mahananda’ Arindam Sil said that like the River Mahananda, her principles should flow from one generation to another.
“This is the time to talk about the principles of life, as very few people nowadays actually lead a life of principles,” Arindam Sil said on Saturday.
He was speaking during the ‘table talks’ programme in the International Film Festival of India, underway in Goa.
‘Mahananda’ is a biopic based on the life of writer-social activist Mahasweta Devi.
“This is the time to talk about the principles of life, as very few people nowadays actually lead a life of principles. Mahasweta Devi was one of the few people who lived a life based on principles. I feel it’s time we teach our children to lead a life of principles,” Arindam Sil said.

Italian director Italo Spinelli speaks with Utpal Borpujari on how he chose Mahasweta Devi’s story “Choli Ke Peeche” for his debut feature Gangor.
Italo Spinelli with Mahasweta Devi
Writer-activist Mahasweta Devi’s story “Choli Ke Peeche/Behind the Bodice” is a stinging indictment of exploitation of tribals as well as the media’s insensitive, if not sensational, handling of delicate issues. It is this story that Italian director Italo Spinelli has chosen to make his debut feature film with. Spinelli, who has earlier directed several documentaries and has been a long-time India lover, shot the film on location in West Bengal’s Purulia area, of late in news for Maoist activities, with a cast that includes Love,Sex Aur Dhoka fame Priyanka Bose, Adil Hussain and Nri actor Samrat Chakraborty. After having its world premiere at the Rome Film Festival and a screening at the 41st International Film Festival of India,...

The Goa Film Festival that was from the 22nd of November to the 2nd of December and I managed to attend the first five days. Unfortunately, I got sick just after the festival and couldn’t compile the report in time. Anyway, some of the films screened here will go on to be important during award season and since that’s around the corner, I figured I’d club my impression of the festival with reviews of the films, since I had foreshadowed some of the buzz. Please keep in mind that this is not blow-by-blow and a laundry list of films reviewed but an impression of one of the biggest Asian film celebrations and the many conversations and predictions I managed to collect.

Literary adaptations on big screen have always been a tricky business. Across countries and languages there are numerous examples of how sometimes brilliant literary work has been reduced to mediocre movies (example from closer home: Mahashweta Devi’s Hazar Chaurasi Ki Maa, filmed by Govind Nihalani), and how sometimes great literature has been made into even greater cinema (example from closer home: Bhisham Sahani’s Tamas, filmed again by Govind Nihalani). While bad literature can almost never be converted into good cinema, there are many good novels that have been made into forgettable films. But despite all that and more, literature continues to be an important source of cinema (the only exception perhaps is our own Bollywood which only rarely taps into India’s rich literary heritage but all the time lament about the lack of good stories, especially at (very often) times when it has to get ‘inspired’ by...
