Remember 2006? That was the year that High School Musical came out, and so did Lance Bass. The very first tweet was tweeted, and Miley Cyrus was just some actress on a new Disney Channel show.

Netflix has renewed ‘Blue Eye Samurai’ for Season 2! Blue Eye Samurai Mizu’s journey is far from ending. The aggressive, revenge-filled adult animated action series created by Michael Green and Amber Noizumi has been renewed for a second season by Netflix.
Blue Eye Samurai may have only arrived on Netflix in November, yet the anime has already captivated audiences with its action-packed & blood-soaked tale of vengeance. It’s unsurprising, given that the brilliantly animated title was deemed one of the best on television in 2023.
Blue Eye Samurai, like a lot of Netflix original anime series, does not adapt any source material and is instead a completely original Netflix anime series. Season 2 of Blue Eye Samurai is expected to be unique rather than adapt to other source materials.

Netflix is undergoing cuts and changes to its animation department yet again, but thankfully good work is not going unrewarded. One of the most celebrated Netflix animated shows of the year, "Blue Eye Samurai," is getting a second season. The show is essentially an animated riff on "Lady Snowblood" that was created by Amber Noizumi and Michael Green and directed by Jane Wu.
The adult animated series is a tale of revenge and blood, following a young biracial woman born out of sexual violence in early Edo period Japan who embarks on a journey of vengeance to find out which of the four remaining white men in Japan is her father. As our own Bj Colangelo wrote, "With only eight episodes, 'Blue Eye Samurai' is an easily digestible watch, but with an addictive story that you'll have to fight yourself from binging."

The samurai Mizu stands backed up to the edge of a seaside cliff, flanked by four master swordsman known as the Four Fangs. It is seemingly a no-win scenario for the title character of Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai. But for eight riveting minutes, Mizu turns this dangerous terrain into an advantage, defying the laws of physics multiple times while carving the Fangs up into little pieces. The closing shot of the sequence may as well be a painting, with the final death blow being delivered while a massive wave crashes in the background,...

Ahead of the Blue Eye Samurai’s debut last Friday, co-creator, executive producer and co-writer Amber Noizumi revealed the deeply personal inspiration for the adult animated tale of revenge set in a 17th century Japan and starring a mixed-race master of the sword.
The concept was conceived 15 years ago, after the birth of Noizumi and co-creator Michael Green’s daughter. She was born with blue eyes, prompting the half-Japanese Noizumi to wonder, “Why am I so excited that my daughter has blue eyes? What’s the big deal about that? And why am I so excited that I have a baby who looks more white?”
It’s the kind of question that many who identify within the biracial, multiracial or mixed-race communities — particularly those with immediate white family or ancestry — find themselves asking at some point. The answer is complex and sometimes painful but can also be revelatory and freeing.

She was born with blue eyes, prompting the half-Japanese Noizumi to wonder, “Why am I so excited that my daughter has blue eyes? What’s the big deal about that? And why am I so excited that I have a baby who looks more white?”

There are plenty of exciting sword fights in Blue Eye Samurai, Netflix’s impressive new animated series (it’s earned 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), but there’s much more in this compelling, critically acclaimed new show. To start, it’s more adult than family-friendly, with graphic sex as well as the expected violence. Moreover, the story about Mizu (Maya Erskine), a despised and disguised– mixed-race young woman and sword master, is also completely original, based neither on a manga, comic, novel, or folk tale. The Canadian-American series was created and written by married couple Amber Nozumi, who has Japanese ancestry, and Michael Green. The voice cast, except for Kenneth Branagh, who plays an American character, is all Asian-American, including Star Trek’s George Takei, Masi Oka (Heroes), Randall Park (Fresh Off the Boat), Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Ming-Na Wen (Mulan), and Harry Shum Jr. (Grey’s Anatomy). Nozumi...

Blue Eye Samurai is a Japanese animation series directed by Jane Wu.
Four foreigners in all of Japan stumbled upon his mother. He is the product of that fateful day, and now he returns as a mestizo samurai master to avenge the sacrifice to his mother.
There will be no mercy in this bloody adventure.
Blue Eye Samurai About the Series
Highly engaging and captivating. It’s not one of those frantic, action-packed series; rather, it’s a show with a compelling script and a great story to tell, in the most classic manner. It takes its time to develop and shape the characters, allowing the viewer to understand their every motivation.
An opportunity to delve into the world of samurai and their customs and way of life.

The second trailer for the forthcoming Blue Eye Samurai animated show, set to premiere on Netflix on November 3, 2023, has been released.
Blue Eye Samurai | Official Trailer
The latest trailer for Blue Eye Samurai, a new adult animated epic, looks at themes of identity, social stigma, and revenge against a vibrant background of Edo-period Japan.
The official trailer for Blue Eye Samurai gives us the same feeling as watching a Japanese or Chinese film – the cloud of arrows in the air at one point reminds us of Zhang Yimou’s masterpiece Hero.
Another element is the extreme violence imposed in simple blows, the focus required for trained warriors to master their art, and the stunning landscapes that stay with you long after you finish watching. It’s no surprise that Japanese and other cinematic masterpieces inspire Blue Eye Samurai.

"Please give me the strength to find the men I seek. I do not know their names, I do know their fate..." Oh sh*#! Netflix has unveiled one more official trailer for the kick ass animated series Blue Eye Samurai, co-created by Amber Noizumi & Michael Green (writer of Logan & Blade Runner 2049). We've featured a few trailers already. It's described as a "for adults only" series from "tragic to poetic to barbaric and occasionally erotic." Set in 1633 Japan during the Edo period, the epic animation series stars Maya Erskine as Mizu, a hardened fighter. Mizu (Maya Erskine) is very good at fighting. So good that she can cleave trees in half with a single swipe of her sword and cut down entire armies single-handedly. So good that no matter how outnumbered or overpowered she seems to be, victory is never out of reach. So good that even if some of Blue Eye Samurai’s storytelling is a bit shallow, Mizu’s skills provide enough pure spectacle to make the series exhilarating to watch.
Blue Eye Samurai takes place in 17th-century Japan, just as the country has closed its borders off to the rest of the world. As a result of this isolationism, mixed-race people are written off as “white devils” and rejected from society. This is the fate that Mizu has suffered since childhood thanks to her brilliant blue eyes, and she’s vowed to enact vengeance on the white man she believes cursed her with them: her father,...

Mizu (Maya Erskine) is a demon capable of cutting through warriors like paper in the midst of those she is chasing.

Netflix's track record with producing live-action anime is mixed, at best. The streamer's "One Piece" series has already been renewed, but the live-action "Cowboy Bebop" was a swiftly-canceled mess.
Their most infamous project, however, is probably "Death Note." This story, first told by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata in a mega-popular manga, focuses on the Japanese teenager Light Yagami. One day, a notebook falls from the sky into Light's lap. Dropped by a Shinigami (a Japanese death god) named Ryuk, the "death note" will kill anyone whose name is written on its pages. Light decides to purge the world of evil by using the Death Note to kill high-profile criminals, becoming a serial killer himself in the process. Dubbed "Kira" (a Japanese pronunciation of "Killer"), he gains allies (deludedly loyal pop idol Misa Amane) and adversaries (eccentric master detective L).
This 2017 film, directed by Adam Wingard, transposed this story to Seattle.

When it premiered in 2006, Tim Kring’s Heroes was raved about and considered the next great piece of episodic genre TV. Many thought it would be the next Lost, and Hayden Panettiere (who’s back in a big way with Scream VI) became a star overnight. But, as soon as season 2 started, the show seemingly jumped the shark, and what began as a promising superhero epic became just another TV soap opera. What happened? Part of it had to do with the fact that Bryan Fuller, who consulted on Season One, left before the second season, while the second season also coincided with the WGA Writer’s Strike, which spelled the doom for many shows. While Heroes would continue for another few seasons, viewership died off, and many felt that the show never lived up to the considerable promise of the first season.

Some stories seem impossible to translate from the written page to the moving image, but a few brave creatives have taken on the task and created masterpieces. Japanese author Yasutaka Tsutsui's acclaimed 1993 novel "Paprika" is one such story, about a brilliant young psychologist named Chiba who begins experimenting with dream therapy. Chiba and her research partner, Tokita, develop a machine that allows them to not only view the dreams of others but experience them firsthand. When their dream-walking machine is stolen, the two have to figure out how to track him down in the real world while dealing with the repercussions in their dreams. It's mind-bending science fiction that works in part because of the limitless potential of the imagination.

What if there was a device that allowed the user to enter other people's dreams? What if one of the devices was stolen by someone who could implant ideas in people's minds to control them? What kind of story could come out of this concept?
If your first thought is Christopher Nolan's "Inception," then congratulations, you played yourself. That film became the rare example of a movie that becomes a shorthand term for its premise — entering people's dreams. Still, it pales in comparison to the film it so blatantly rips off, Satoshi Kon's "Paprika," an anime movie adapted from Yasutaka Tsutsui's 1993 novel of the same name.
That novel was almost adapted to live-action over a decade ago by the late, great Wolfgang Petersen, but now Deadline reports that Tsutsui's "Paprika" is getting a second chance at becoming a live-action project, on the small screen. Cathy Yan has...

In a lot of ways, Bullet Train shouldn’t work. It’s over the top on exposition and flashback sequences that I usually hate. It tries to weave its way through a story that is a mix of Tarantino and Guy Ritchie, soaked in the coat of a loud, erratic, goofy, and gory picture that somehow delivers a sugar rush of entertainment and excitement.
The story sounds simple, Brad Pitt is ‘Ladybug’, an assassin trying to make his life better by just taking the simpler jobs, like taking a briefcase from a bullet train and delivering it to his handler. Of course, this isn’t as simple as it would seem. The train is filled with a colourful cast of assassins,...

Kelly McCormick’s producing credits include “Deadpool 2,” “Nobody,” and the upcoming “Bullet Train,” but she’s not afraid to play favorites: She said the Charlize Theron-starring “Atomic Blonde” is the project she’s “most proud of.” For her, the big, bombastic action film is personal.
She got her start in documentaries and later became a production and packaging executive before creating 87North Productions with her husband, director David Leitch. The 2017 “Atomic Blonde” was their first collaboration and it marked former stuntman Leitch’s first solo directing effort (after serving as an uncredited co-director on “John Wick” with friend Chad Stahelski).
Billed as a “production and action design company founded by filmmakers,” 87North titles have earned a combined total of over 2.28 billion in worldwide box office. Next up is the literal star vehicle “Bullet Train” featuring Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Zazie Beetz,...

This is it. This is pretty much the end of summer.
Sony is pulling in Bullet Train, the last big tentpole of a summer that has grossed 2.9 billion domestic through the end of July per Comscore, +142 from the same pandemic period a year ago, but off 17 from the May-July summer frame in 2019. July alone clocked 1.1 billion, the first billion dollar-plus grossing month since December 2019. However, after Bullet Train‘s start, get ready for a two-and-half month dry period that’s greatly lacking mass-appealing films, but crowded with adult counter-programming. Worldwide estimates for Bullet Train are at 60M with at least 30M stateside for the Brad Pitt starring, David Leitch directed R-rated 87 North film.
Even though the Rotten Tomatoes’ critics score is low on the film at 58, the hope is that good word of mouth off the Rt audience score will trigger an overindexing here for the feature take of Kōtarō Isaka’s 2010 thriller novel.

Brad Pitt seemed as surprised as anyone when asked at the Bullet Train premiere tonight about his impending retirement.
Pitt had a semi-humorous and very visceral reaction to the question, which was prompted by a recent GQ interview. On the red carpet tonight, he laughed and spun halfway around as if embarrassed before coming back with, “No, I mean…I really have to work on my phrasing.”
He continued, “I was just saying, ‘I’m past middle age and I want to be specific about how I I spend those last things however they may be.’ “
Asked about specifics on those specifics, Pitt said, “I’ve never been a five year plan kind of guy. I’m just, whatever feels right for the day. I still operate that way.”

Tonight at the premiere of Sony’s Bullet Train, Zazie Beetz spoke with Deadline about her part in the upcoming season of Netflix’s Black Mirror, which she revealed she has already wrapped.
“I just came off of shooting that, actually. I just shot that in June,” she told Deadline of the part.
Asked if it was a lot of fun she replied, “I wouldn’t say my character is having a lot of fun, but…I think there’s a really great tongue-in-cheek dark element to it, premonition kind of element. The mirror reflecting back on us.”
Beetz is best known for playing Van on FX’s Atlanta alongside Donald Glover and Lakeith Stanfield. Her Black Mirror casting was revealed relatively recently, in mid-July. You can watch her discuss Black Mirror below.

The Maria Beetle author, alongside the director and writer of its big screen adaptation Bullet Train, have opened up about the film’s decision to cast non-Japenese actors in the upcoming Sony feature film.
In an interview with The New York Times, author Kōtarō Isaka was asked about how his story — which was originally published in Japan in 2010 and had its English language debut in print last year — has been adapted by Hollywood.
According to the Times, the author regards his characters as “ethnically malleable,” and maintains his original Japanese setting and context do not matter as much, as the story’s ragtag crew of killers are “not real people, and maybe they’re not even Japanese.”
