In her review of the film, Cate Marquis wrote of About My Father, “Maniscalco and De Niro together are the major highlight and reason to see this light little comedy. As stubborn father and wheedling son, they are a delight together and sometimes even hilarious.”
The hottest comic in America, Sebastian Maniscalco joins forces with legendary Italian-American and two-time Oscar® winner, Robert De Niro, in the new comedy About My Father. The film centers around Sebastian (Maniscalco) who is encouraged by his fiancée (Leslie Bibb) to bring his immigrant, hairdresser father, Salvo (De Niro), to a weekend get-together with her super-rich and exceedingly eccentric family. The weekend develops into what can only be described as a culture clash, leaving Sebastian and Salvo to discover that the great thing about family is everything about family.

Mama Mia! In an alternate timeline, Chris Pratt never voiced Mario in Illumination and Nintendo‘s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. How is this possible? The role could have gone to About My Father actor and comedian Sebastian Maniscalco! Speaking with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on Live With Kelly and Mark, Maniscalco told the duo he auditioned for the Mario role before joining the cast as Spike, Mario and Luigi’s former boss in the film. While Maniscalco didn’t get the chance to play Mario, he says his version of the character is closer to the voice used by Charles Martinet in the video game franchise.
“Everybody was like, ‘How come they didn’t cast an Italian American for the role?’ So I read for Mario, and I went in there and I did the whole, ‘It’s a’me, Mario!’ And then they said, ‘We’re gonna give you Spike.

The fictional story uses Maniscalco’s real name, as he is about to propose to his girlfriend Ellie (Leslie Bibb), but his widowed father Salvo (Robert De Niro) still dominates his life. Ellie asks Sebastian to spend the 4th of July with her wealthy blue blood family, with includes her Senator mother Tigger (Kim Cattrall), father Bill (David Rasche) and brothers Lucky (Anders Holm) and Doug (Brett Dier). Sebastian tries to get out of it, with the excuse that he has to spend the 4th with Salvo, but Ellie insists that he bring Dad along. So it’s the Sicilian father and son against the country club one percenters.

Robert De Niro as Salvo in About My Father. Photo Credit: Dan Anderson When you think about Robert De Niro, you think about Taxi Driver. You think about The Deer Hunter. You think about The Godfather Part II. You think about Raging Bull. In other words, when you think about Robert De Niro, you think about intense roles in intense dramas. But then, there’s the De Niro who appeared in Meet the Parents, Analyze This, and Wag the Dog. Yes, over the years, De Niro has proven himself to be quite the comedic actor, even though he’s made far more drama movies than comedies. Now he’s starring in a new comedy, About My Father, and he says he enjoys the occasional trip into the genre as a change of pace. Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco plays a man named Sebastian Maniscalco while Robert De Niro plays his father Salvo, in the comedy About My Father. Maniscalco and De Niro as father and son are the major delight in this otherwise mildly funny, warm-hearted comedy. It is a comedy about family but not really a family comedy as there are bits of adult humor.
Dad Salvo (De Niro) is a hairstylist (don’t call him a barber!) from a long line of hardworking, hard-scrabble, stoop-postured, Sicilian scowlers, but Salvo left Sicily to immigrate to America to give his son a better life. However, his second-generation Italian-American son has fallen for someone who is not a fellow Italian-American – an artist named Ellie (Leslie Bibb) whose immigrants ancestors came over a little earlier – on the Mayflower.

Review: The marketing around About My Father makes a big deal about Sebastian Maniscalco being considered one of the most popular comedians in America. Maniscalco’s stand-up routine pokes fun at his immigrant family, his vastly different in-laws, and his observations about how people act. With a fair amount of profanity in his routines, Maniscalco’s brand of humor remains pretty inviting to all audiences. About My Father takes a lot of jokes and stories Maniscalco has told over the years and pulls them together into a comedy loosely inspired by his own life.

Nanni Moretti returns to the film-within-a-film format with a fitfully funny new comedy that, this time, offers two films-within-a-film (plus a surreal dream sequence). It is, frankly, a relief after 2021’s terrible, soapy melodrama Three Floors, and, at a crisp 96 minutes, so much easier to swallow. In some ways a companion piece to 2015’s Mia Madre, it finds the director putting all his neuroses back on show, pontificating on everything from movie violence to streaming platforms and why wearing slippers onscreen is a fashion no-no that can only be pulled off by Aretha Franklin in The Blues Brothers.
As is usual in Moretti’s self-reflexive pieces, the main film being made within the film is the kind of film that no director would ever make and that no modern audience would ever pay to see. Set in 1956, it sees Hungary’s Budavari Circus arriving in Rome’s Quarticciolo area, escaping the Soviet invasion of Budapest.

Following a handful of supporting roles in “Tag,” “Green Book” and “The Irishman,” Sebastian Maniscalco makes his first bid for leading-man status with “About My Father,” a family comedy sourced from the same semi-autobiographical material that made his stand-up a commercial and cultural phenomenon. To say it’s better than all three “Meet the Parents” films may be a dubious compliment, but it’s one made more significant because it co-stars Robert De Niro — and more importantly, actually features recognizable human behavior amidst its suitably outlandish set pieces. Whether or not Maniscalco has a legitimate future as a movie star, he proves a likeable presence as a romantic lead, while director Laura Terruso skillfully delivers comedic payoffs that tap into his wheelhouse while introducing him to a wider audience.

There’s no doubt that Robert De Niro is funny, but his recent taste in comedies have certainly called his sense of humor into question. It’s been over 20 years since “Analyze This” and “Meet the Parents” launched the robust comedy leg of the Oscar winner’s career, but not every subsequent project has been as successful. Following the twin head scratchers of “Dirty Grandpa” and “The War with Grandpa” (unrelated; though equally ignored), the godfather of Hollywood has finally found his comedy groove again.
And wouldn’t you know, all it took was a good, old-fashioned Italian American family farce — fittingly titled “About My Father.” Though there’s a wide swath of the public for whom De Niro can do no wrong, even giants can fall. Luckily, Sebastian Maniscalco knows the importance of family.

After first sparking rumors that she may be joining Darren Star on his latest series, “Emily in Paris“, when they appeared together at the season 3 premiere, Kim Cattrall responded to Et about possibly reuniting with the “Sex and the City” creator.
“We’ll see,” she told Et’s Rachel Smith while promoting her new film, “About My Father”, which opens in theaters on Friday, May 26. “We’ll see what happens.”
While it’s certainly possible that the 66-year-old star could appear in the upcoming fourth season of the hit Netflix series starring Lily Collins as an American ingénue who moves to Paris and joins a French marketing firm, she reminded Et that she has a new series of her own coming out on the streaming platform.
“I don’t really know [but] I have another show coming out called ‘Glamorous’,” Cattrall said. “[It’s] sort of like a ‘Devil Wears Prada.'”

Chicago – The adage of write what you know certainly applies to the first film in which hot stand-up comic Sebastian Maniscalco takes the lead role. “About My Father” is a fictionalized version of the relationship between Sebastian and his real life father Salvo, which Maniscalco also co-wrote. Disney’s return to live-action takes of their animated vault in the fullest theatrical form happens this weekend with Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid which is eyeing a $180M worldwide start.
The majority of that number will be made stateside with $120M for the four-day Memorial Day weekend holiday, and around $100M over three days. At $120M, Little Mermaid would be the fifth highest opening in U.S./Canada for the Friday-Monday Memorial Day weekend holiday. Pic’s overseas launch in such major markets, save Japan on June 9, begins today in France, Italy, Korea, Brazil, Germany, the UK, Spain and China joining in subsequent days. For those keeping track, Cruella was the last live-action adaptation of a Disney animated pic (she was the villain in 101 Dalmatians), however, it went day and date over Memorial Day weekend 2021 when theaters were just reopening for the summer from Covid.

“This was not planned,” says stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalco about his auto-biopic comedy About My Father making it to the screen.
“This is not something I had on my vision board,” he tells us on today’s Crew Call.
About My Father, directed by Laura Terruso, and written by Austen Earl and Maniscalco, follows the stand-up as he meets his posh wife’s well-to-do family. Complicating matters is Maniscalco’s salon stylist immigrant Italian father, Salvo (played by Robert De Niro) is also along for the ride.
Earl and Maniscalco bonded as both of their wives “come from a better cut of cloth” as the stand-up puts it.
How did Terruso win the job?
“She had –I don’t know what the hell it was–a power point presentation,” Maniscalco tells us, “She came in with visuals of what the wardrobe is going to be; I’m a visual guy.

Robert De Niro revealed he is a father again at age 79 at the premiere of his new movie, which happens to be called “About My Father.”

For Robert De Niro’s upcoming movie “About My Father,” Et Canada sat down with the legendary actor to chat about fatherhood.
When asked what his love language is, the famous father, 79, told Et Canada’s Brittnee Blair that he believes “in being loving with [his] kids,” despite sometimes having “to be stern about stuff.”
“I mean, there’s no way around it with kids. I don’t like to have to lay down the law and stuff like that. But, [sometimes] you just have no choice,” he explained. “And any parent, I think, would say the same thing. You always want to do the right thing by the children and give them the benefit of the doubt but sometimes you can’t.”

May kicks off the annual summer movie season where studios will release some of their biggest “tentpole” flicks, with this summer being particularly important for the full recovery of the box office. And yet, oddly, there are only three prospective blockbusters this month with many smaller films padding things out. Read on for Gold Derby’s May 2023 box office preview.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Marvel/Disney) – May 5
James Gunn marks the finale of his MCU trilogy with the group he introduced in 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” featuring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldañha, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff and the voices of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper. Joining the finale is Will Poulter as Adam Warlock and Chukwudi Iwuji (“Peacemaker”) as The High Evolutionary, two major Marvel Comics cosmic characters, although it feels like this will be a standalone finale, rather than tying into the rest of the MCU.
