Steve Irwin passed away on Sept. 4, 2006, and the details surrounding his death are still incredibly distressing. The Crocodile Hunter was only 44 years old when he was fatally stabbed by a stingray in a freak accident. While filming an underwater documentary called Ocean's Deadliest at Batt Reef, near Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia, the famed television personality and his cameraman Justin Lyons came face to face with an eight-foot-wide stingray when they went snorkeling in shallow waters to obtain footage for his daughter's children's program Bindi the Jungle Girl. After a few takes, the two decided to go back in the water for "one last shot" of Steve standing behind the stingray as it swam back into the ocean.

It's been nearly eight years since Steve Irwin's death from a a stingray attack, in which his heart was punctured. Only now is his camera man and friend, Justin Lyons, speaking out on exactly how the tragedy unfolded.
He says the stingray attacked while he was ready to film it swimming away. "All of a sudden it propped on its front and started stabbing wildly with its tail, hundreds of strikes in a few seconds," he tells Australia's "Studio 10." "It probably thought that Steve's shadow was a tiger shark, which feeds on them very regularly."
At first Lyons didn't think anything was wrong and his camera followed the animal. "It wasn't until I panned the camera back, that Steve was standing in a huge pool of blood, that I realized something had gone wrong," he remembers.
He also says reports that the stingray barb was pulled from Irwin's chest are incorrect,...

Justin Lyons, the cameraman who was with Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin in the final moments of his life, recently recounted what exactly happened in the incident that caused his death.
Steve Irwin's Final Moments Revealed
In his interview with Australian talk show Studio Ten, Lyons said that on the day of Irwin's death, they had been in the process of filming a documentary feature called Ocean's Deadliest in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. They couldn’t find any Tiger Sharks, but when they came across a typically docile stingray, the two decided to shoot some footage for another project.
“This one was extraordinarily large. It was 8-foot-wide. Massive,” said Lyons. “Stingrays are normally very calm. If they don’t want you to be around them, they’ll swim away. They’re very fast swimmers.”

Justin and Steve knew one another for 15 years and "were very close," according to the cameraman. "I remember it really very clearly," Justin told the hosts at Australian news show Studio 10. "We found a massive stingray, this one was extraordinarily large, massive, almost eight feet [long], so it was very impressive. We were only in chest-deep water and we stood up and talked about what we were going to do, we always made a bit of a plan beforehand if we were going to film underwater. "Stingrays are normally very calm. If...
