The sci-fi horror film M3GAN (watch it Here) was a box office success when it was released last year, earning $181 million at the global box office on a budget of $12 million and spawning a sequel that is set to reach theatres in May of 2025. The collectible makers at Neca are about to find out, because they have created life-size replicas of M3GAN and are selling them for $494.99. You can check out the product page at This Link. We didn’t catch word of this when it happened, but it has been revealed that short filmmaker Adam Cosco recently filed a copyright and breach of contract lawsuit against Malignant director James Wan and his wife Ingrid Bisu, claiming the film plagiarized a screenplay he had written called Little Brother. Thankfully, the details are the lawsuit are just now coming to light because the case has been settled.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cosco claimed that Ryan Turek of Blumhouse had access to his Little Brother script and passed it over to Wan, who then used it as the basis for Malignant. Wan denied ever receiving or reading the script, but the lawsuit pointed out that there were several similarities between the two works. The complaint pointed out that “both screenplays feature a twist that the protagonist has her twin brother absorbed inside her in the form of a malignant tumor,...

James Wan’s Atomic Monster has settled a copyright and breach of contract lawsuit from a writer who accused the prolific horror movie producer of ripping off his screenplay to make Malignant.
Adam Cosco on Sunday moved to dismiss the case after reaching a deal to resolve the lawsuit. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Cosco, a writer and director on several short films, sued in 2022, claiming that his screenplay for Little Brother was plagiarized. He alleged that Wan, who wrote and directed Malignant, got his work through Ryan Turek, vice president of feature film development at Blumhouse who has collaborated with the horror director on projects.

Soon after the release of M3GAN in January of 2023, it was announced that the team behind the film – Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster – were aiming to replicate M3GAN‘s January theatrical success by setting a January 2024 release date for their supernatural thriller Night Swim. The movie didn’t manage to go over as well or get as much attention as M3GAN did, and was given a VOD release by the end of January. Now it’s set to receive a Collector’s Edition digital release tomorrow, March 12th, with a Blu-ray and DVD release to follow on April 9th – and these releases of Night Swim will be accompanied by featurettes and a commentary.

Universal Pictures and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a trilogy of sequels to the 1973 classic The Exorcist, which we’re going to another collaboration between Blumhouse Productions and directed David Gordon Green (who recently delivered a trilogy of Halloween sequels), they were definitely expecting the first entry in the new trilogy to go over better with audiences than The Exorcist: Believer did when it was released last October. (You can read our 4/10 review Here.) The box office numbers were okay, the movie pulled in $137 million on a $30 million budget, but Universal was hoping for a lot better than “okay,” and the reactions were largely negative. Soon after the release of Believer, we heard that Universal and Blumhouse still intended to carry out the trilogy, but the follow-ups would be reworked. Jason Blum and James Wan have carved out a nice little partnership with some successful mid-budget horror movies. The two have collaborated with their production companies, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, for recent projects like the latest film in the Insidious series, which also had Patrick Wilson make his directorial debut, Insidious: The Red Door and the killer doll movie, M3GAN. Recently, it was revealed that Blum’s dream project is to revive the Friday the 13th franchise. The classic slasher series hasn’t released a film since the 2009 Platinum Dunes reboot.
The rights to Friday the 13th are currently tangled up with director Sean Cunningham and writer Victor Miller disputing who has the rightful possession, but Blum is brainstorming a way to usher in the new series if he’s able to acquire the property. Director Scott Derrickson’s adaptation of the Joe Hill short story The Black Phone was well-received by critics and the general audience alike. 83% of the reviews listed on Rotten Tomatoes are positive, and more importantly it earned over $161 million at the box office on a budget of just under $20 million. The Black Phone doesn’t lend itself to being sequelized all that well. Universal, Blumhouse and co-producer James Wan took us for a Night Swim in theaters over the weekend, with the Bryce McGuire-directed horror movie becoming the genre’s very first theatrical release of the new year. Was it a strong start for the horror genre, you ask?
Night Swim debuted in 3,250 theaters across the United States over the weekend, opening to $12 million domestically. Worldwide, the film scared up $17.6 million in its debut.
Here’s the day-to-day breakdown here in the United States:
Friday, January 5: $5,250,000 Saturday, January 6: $4,180,000 Sunday, January 7: $2,570,000
For the sake of comparison, Blumhouse’s M3GAN was released in January of last year, and the viral appeal of the title character drove the film to a $30 million domestic opening. Granted, nobody in their right mind expected Night Swim to perform the way M3GAN did.

Plus, yes, Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight) will be reprising the role of the child-killer known as The Grabber. The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson had said he would only return for a sequel if Hawke did as well… and after Hawke was confirmed to be returning, we learned that Derrickson will indeed be directing The Black Phone 2.

The high concept supernatural thriller Night Swim is out in theaters now, plunging a family into an aquatic nightmare thanks to a haunted swimming pool. It also happens to be based on a 2014 short film of the same name by Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire, and you can watch it right now.
When speaking with McGuire ahead of Night Swim‘s theatrical release, the filmmaker said of the short’s inspiration, “The short was really just Rod Blackhurst and I hanging out in a pool one night and being like, ‘Remember when you were a kid, and you got freaked out because you couldn’t see the bottom anymore?’ And you thought that something was beneath you. It was like, ‘Yeah, I still feel that.’ Then, ‘Let’s see if we can capture that in a short amount of time, in a short format.’”

It’s a safe bet that there are more than a few folks with irrational fears of swimming pools at night. Sharks, alligators, drains that suck insides out, it is all very real for a moment. And now, Blumhouse has a new fright flick to start off your 2024. Night Swim stars Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon as a couple moving into a new home with a mysterious pool. Written and directed by Bryce McGuire and based on his own 2014 short film. So far, box office tracking suggests this might be a sleeper hit.

This week brings the arrival of Night Swim, a high concept horror feature from writer/director Bryce McGuire that centers around a haunted swimming pool with murky, supernatural depths. Night Swim arrives in theaters on January 5, 2024, and the film employed as many practical effects as possible to submerge viewers into its aquatic nightmare realm.
Based on the acclaimed 2014 short film by Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire, the film stars Wyatt Russell (Overlord, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”) and Oscar® nominee Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) as a couple looking for a fresh start in a new home in the wake of a newly diagnosed illness. For their family, the home and its large backyard swimming pool offer the chance for recovery and togetherness. If only the pool didn’t harbor a sinister secret.
McGuire recently shared with Bloody Disgusting how he wanted to approach Night Swim as practically as possible.

Plus, yes, Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight) will be reprising the role of the child-killer known as The Grabber. Now producer Ryan Turek has confirmed to ComicBook.com that The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson is coming back to direct The Black Phone 2.

Following the success of their Halloween trilogy, writer/director David Gordon Green and Blumhouse re-teamed to tackle another esteemed horror property: The Exorcist.
The Exorcist: Believer possesses home video with an audio commentary by David Gordon Green, co-writer Peter Sattler, special makeup FX designer Christopher Nelson, and executive producer Ryan Turek, among other extras.
Here are 15 things I learned from The Exorcist: Believer commentary…
1. The film’s opening soundscape is inspired by a meditation app.
The film’s opening logos are accompanied by droning sounds inspired by calming music on a meditation app that Green uses.
“I am a fan of the mid-afternoon meditation shutdown, and I listen to a little app that’s full of singing bells and chimes and little brain cleansers, so I thought nothing better for our brainwaves than to open our movie with some of the same.”
‘Brainwaves’ was also the code name adopted for the production.

The new trailer for Universal Pictures’ Night Swim opens with a scene similar to It, with a pool drain subbing in for a sidewalk curb inlet. A child notices something floating in the drain and reaches for it when suddenly a grotesque arms shoots out and grabs the young girl.
A cat becomes a victim of whatever is haunting a backyard pool, and the home owner’s children seem to be particularly sensitive to the supernatural pool dwellers.
“My kids have seen things and I’m worried something is happening to my husband?” says the mom, played by Oscar nominee Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin).
The cast also includes Wyatt Russell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), Amélie Hoeferle (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), and Gavin Warren (Fear the Walking Dead).

Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful, only to become increasingly sinister.
As Alice’s behavior becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes and realizes Chauncey is much more than the furry toy she believed him to be. The trailer reveals Alice’s eerily lifelike stuffed bear is an “imaginary friend” from her own childhood she long ago left behind while growing up and is now unhappy she abandoned him.
“You were always playing with your imaginary friend.

Blumhouse and Lionsgate have unveiled the trailer for the upcoming horror film “Imaginary,” set for a March 8 release.
Directed by Jeff Wadlow, “Imaginary” stars DeWanda Wise as Jessica, a woman returning to live in her childhood home with her family. Once moved in, her stepdaughter Alice becomes infatuated with Chauncey, a stuffed bear found in the basement. As Jessica grows concerned about the sinister connection between Alice and Chauncey, she realizes Chauncey might be more than just a bear.
Keri Moore, Lionsgate’s co-president of theatrical marketing, told Variety of the film’s premise: “Something you see across cultures is that children have a unique access to the spirit world. What if their imaginary friends are something from the spirit world? What if these imaginary friends were real, and what if when you left one of them, that made them upset?”

Soon after the release of M3GAN back in January, it was announced that the team behind the film – Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster – were aiming to replicate M3GAN‘s January theatrical success by setting a January 2024 release date for their supernatural thriller Night Swim. The movie has a January 5th release date… and according to an interview with director Bryce McGuire, it might ruin the concept of swimming pools for some viewers.
McGuire has written and directed Night Swim, which is based on a short film he made with Rod Blackhurst back in 2014. The feature version of the story is built around the hidden source of terror found in an iconic backyard swimming pool. The film has the following logline: No running. No diving. No lifeguard on duty. No swimming after dark.
Here’s the synopsis: Ray Waller, a former major...
