I am not a gearhead, so I have always looked at the Fast and the Furious franchise from a distance. But their popularity makes them hard to avoid. Fast X, the tenth installment in the series, arrives on disc and streaming this week from Universal Home Entertainment and no doubt entertains those who have been there from the beginning.
As with any franchise with multiple chapters, there’s the core set of characters and then all the supporting players who drop in and out of these chapters as needed. And, to keep things interesting, new players are added, usually the antagonist and maybe a new ally or frenemy.
Here, we have the sociopathic Dante (Jason Momoa) seeking vengeance on Dom (Vin Diesel) for the death of his father (Joaquim de Almeida) a decade earlier, as depicted in Fast Five. With seemingly limitless cash and men at his disposal, he has...

Four years ago, Daniela Melchior came out of nowhere to land the highly coveted role of Cleo Caza/Ratcatcher 2 in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and upon the film’s release in August 2021, she immediately became the heart and soul of the superhero pic. Vin Diesel, who voiced Groot in all three of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films, agreed with the consensus surrounding Melchior’s performance, so he offered the Portuguese actor a role in Fast X as Isabel, Elena Neves’ (Elsa Pataky) street-racing sister.
Melchior knew that Gunn had forever changed her life when he cast her in April 2019, but receiving a direct offer for Fast X was when she felt it for the first time, career-wise.

The ethos of the "Fast and Furious" franchise is best summed up with one word: family. In the beginning, it was all about fast cars and evading the law. But around the fifth movie or so, the concept of family became the motivating force of the narrative, outweighing any previous allegiance to money or thrills (though the thrills never left).
"Fast X" is one of the most family-centric of all the "Fast" movies, even if it does separate the clan for much of its runtime. Dominic Toretto's (Vin Diesel) abuelita, played by the legendary Rita Moreno, shows up at the start of the film to remind Dom that family matters more than anything. And then there's Dom's son, Little Brian (Leo Abelo Perry), for whom Dom wants to provide a better life free of all the hardships he's experienced.

This post contains major spoilers for "Fast X."
The fact that 2001's "The Fast and the Furious" kickstarted its story with a group of street racers hijacking trucks with illegal DVDs feels like something that took place in an alternate universe. Nearly two prequels and nine sequels later, the "Fast & Furious" franchise has grown and mutated beyond recognition, emerging as a tentpole blockbuster franchise with increasingly audacious stunts completely removed from the realm of reality.
This aspect of "Fast & Furious," however, has often worked in its favor — the genuinely impressive vault chase sequence in "Fast 5" calls for an appreciation for the franchise's commitment to pulling off the impossible, while entries like "F9" ensure that ludicrous-yet-entertaining action set pieces are balanced with meaningful emotional stakes. While "Fast X" doubles down on its dedication to going all out on its premise with a growing cast of globetrotting characters, Louis Leterrier...

“Fast X,” the latest installment in the “Fast and Furious” franchise, is speeding to a projected $67.25 million debut at the domestic box office this weekend.
The street racing movie earned $28 million on Friday from 4,046 theaters, and is expected to gross another $22.43 million on Saturday and $16.82 million on Sunday. This will be enough to knock Disney and Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” out of the top spot, as the superhero tale is expected to pull in $32.89 million in its third weekend of release, bringing its North American total to over $267 million.
On Thursday, “Fast X” raked in $7.5 million in previews, setting it on track to earn more than $60 million in its first weekend of release. That puts the 10th chapter in the “Fast” saga at No. 7 in terms of highest box office debuts, between 2021’s “F9: The Fast Saga” ($70 million) and 2019’s “Hobbs and Shaw” ($60 million). This article contains major Fast X Spoilers.
For a franchise where no one seems to ever stay dead, things sure look deadly serious at the end of Fast X. Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and his young son sit beneath a Portuguese dam with mere seconds to think before its massive waters and debris crash on their heads; the B-team of Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Ludacris), Han (Sung Kang), and Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) appear to have almost certainly perished in a car wreck; and even the return of Gal Gadot’s Gisele does little to soften the sting of Uncle Jakob’s (John Cena) noble sacrifice.
In its final moments, Fast X appears to reach for the sudden shock of seeing your favorite superheroes turn to dust in Avengers: Infinity War. Whether it actually pulls that off with excitement (as opposed to bafflement) is open for debate, but either way...

Fasten your seatbelts because Universal’s “Fast X” is racing into theaters this weekend, and it’s picked up $7.5 million in Thursday previews at the domestic box office.
The 10th “Fast and Furious” is predicted to open to more than $60 million. That would make it the franchise’s seventh-highest debut, between 2021’s “F9: The Fast Saga” ($70 million) and 2019’s “Hobbs and Shaw” spinoff ($60 million). In terms of Thursday previews, those movies made $7.1 million and $5.8 million, respectively.
“F9” released during the pandemic, when around 80% of theaters were still shuttered, giving “Fast X” a shaky outlook in the U.S. However, international sales have played a major part in the “Fast and Furious” global box office hauls. “Fast X” is targeting $220 million overseas in its first weekend. After costing $340 million to produce and $100 million to promote, “Fast X” will need to keep its foot on the gas after it opens to net a large profit.

If you live your life a quarter mile of a time and haven't seen "Fast X" just yet, look away now! This article contains major spoilers for the Fast family.
Have you caught your breath yet? "Fast X" certainly lived up to the hype (you can read /Film's review by Ethan Anderton here) in terms of putting Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto and the rest of his racing crew through the wringer, overloading this latest sequel with constant action that somehow kept topping itself with each and every set piece. All of that culminated with a frankly mind-melting third act finale, which paid off on previous comments that the blockbuster would end on a daring cliffhanger.
By the time the smoke cleared, cinema's First Family was scattered to the winds — either dead or left with no assurances that they'd all make it out alive. After Jakob's (John Cena) heroic...

You may recall that the last entry in the Fast and Furious saga, 2021’s F9, featured a sequence in which two of the Avengers our heroes—the comic foils Tyrese Gibson and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges—drove a car into outer space. There is not anything quite as wacky as that in the 10th and latest installment, Fast X, but there are still plenty of reality-defying stunts that keep this franchise from returning to Earth in any fashion that’s recognizably rooted in reality.
Still, back in F9, one got the sense that the film was at least leaning into its sheer ridiculousness, which made it more palatable and entertaining. With one notable exception, however, Dominic Toretto’s much-discussed Family is now taking itself far too seriously. As a result, the 141-minute movie is a fairly lumbering and tedious sit.

Justin Lin may no longer be in the driver’s seat of the “Fast & Furious” franchise, but his blockbuster fingerprints are all over “Fast X.” The tenth — and most outrageous installment yet — in the ongoing fast-moving franchise delivers on its promise of high-octane thrills while very clearly setting-up a finale to the massive series, entering every living player from its past into the race. Though Lin’s abrupt departure put the fate of the franchise in jeopardy, French director Louis Leterrier has a solid command of explosive and heart-pumping action scenes to take it for spin.
Relying on homages to past stunts (like Diesel’s Dom Toretto driving out of a moving plane) and surprise appearances by long lost characters, the movie lays the groundwork for a possibly three-part finale (as Diesel has indicated). Whether it has any new tricks up its sleeve still remains to be seen, though...

It's hard to believe that the "Fast and Furious" franchise began back in 2001 with a story centered around a criminal ring stealing electronics. In the two decades since then, the multi-billion dollar film series has turned into a global heist machine with technology that's way more advanced than a DVD player. Hell, "F9: The Fast Saga" managed to send two of the franchise's longtime characters into space. How the hell did we get here?
The answer is "Fast Five," a sequel that reinvigorated the franchise with the best action that the entire series had seen up until that point and the badass attitude and beefy brawn of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. After the film's massive blockbuster success, and adding a boost to franchises like "The Mummy" and "G.I. Joe," many referred to Johnson as "franchise Viagra," so much that there was an entire "Saturday Night Live" monologue dedicated to the perceived phenomenon.

Perhaps the biggest mistake the “Fast and Furious” franchise ever made was in “F9: The Fast Saga,” when the characters suddenly became self-aware and realized that after all the physics-defying vehicular mayhem they’ve been through, they always miraculously emerge unscathed.
How could they have defied the odds for so long? Are they truly immortal or are they merely blessed with impenetrable plot armor? And if any of those things are true why should the audience care one whit about what happens to them? Especially when even the characters who do die usually come back after a sequel or two.
“F9” made a convincing case for letting this whole “Fast and Furious” series finally end. But just when you thought it was okay to check out, “Fast X” pulls you back in. Louis Leterrier’s installment does an impressive job of making all the old nonsense make a little bit of sense again.

The social media embargo expired after the Rome premiere, and people who were lucky enough to see “Fast X” a week ahead of its stateside theatrical debut on May 19 are calling the movie “stupidly entertaining,” a “visual spectacle” and declaring that it puts the franchise “back on track.” Others praise Jason Momoa’s performance as the main villain, but admit there are also some “clunky elements” to the movie.

Vin Diesel has revealed that the Fast & Furious franchise may wind down with three films, rather than the two previously discussed.
The F&f actor-producer’s comments came during an appearance alongside co-star Michelle Rodriguez on the red carpet of Fast X in Rome. When asked by Fandango’s Naz Perez about what lies ahead for his globe-trotting street racer Dominic Toretto beyond the new film, which hits theaters on May 19, Diesel said, “It’s a really good question. As filmmakers, you want to allow people to enjoy the film without tipping the hat too much. I can say this. Going into making this movie, the studio had asked if this could be a two-parter. And after the studio saw this, part one, they said, could you make Fast X, the finale, a trilogy?”

Universal Pictures has debuted a new trailer for ‘Fast X’ titled “Open Road.”
Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything—and everyone—that Dom loves, forever.
In 2011’s Fast Five, Dom and his crew took out nefarious Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes and decapitated his empire on a bridge in Rio De Janeiro. What they didn’t know was that Reyes’ son, Dante (Aquaman’s Jason Momoa), witnessed it all and has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price.

Who is Dante? A man obsessed with revenge who will do whatever it takes to destroy Dom and his family in Fast X. The new three-minute featurette focuses on Jason Momoa’s approach to playing a villain, something he hasn’t done in a decade, and his joy at joining the Fast and Furious franchise.
Returning franchise stars include Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, and Nathalie Emmanuel. Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Jason Statham, John Cena, Scott Eastwood, Oscar winner Helen Mirren, and Oscar winner Charlize Theron also reprise their roles for the 10th film of the saga.
Newbies to the F&f include Oscar winner Brie Larson as Tess, a rogue representative from the Agency; Alan Richtson (Reacher) as Aimes, the new head of the Agency who doesn’t hold the same fondness for Dom’s crew as his predecessor, Mr. Nobody; Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad...

If you expect one thing from a new Fast & Furious trailer, make it Family. Another? Physics mown down in a blaze of speeding car tires or exploding motors. Vin Diesel growling something. A giant threat to our heroes that can only be faced in demolition derby fashion and, yes, Family again. The new look at Fast X has screeched in, and though not as gigantic as the previous effort, is still best described as… a lot.

Assuming you believe that…

The nearly four-minute official trailer for Universal Pictures’ Fast X introduces Jason Momoa as the big bad that Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew will be going up against. The trailer starts off being all about family (since that’s a running theme in the Fast & Furious franchise) but then Momoa’s new character Dante pops up and warns, “Dominic Toretto, you’re about to learn all about fear.”
Dante continues: “You built such a beautiful life filled with love and family. I never got that chance. You stole that from me. My future. My family. And now…I’m gonna break yours. Piece by piece.”
So, that’s in the trailer’s first minute. A quick flashback shows the crew taking out Dante’s father, followed by lots of over-the-top action sequences and Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty promising they will fight back.

Back in 2015, just before the release of “Furious 7,” the seventh installment in the “Fast and Furious” franchise, star Vin Diesel suggested in an interview that the film would win Best Picture at the Oscars. “Universal is going to have the biggest movie in history with this movie,” Diesel told Variety at the time. “It will probably win best picture at the Oscars unless the Oscars don’t want to be relevant ever.”
Sadly, for Diesel and perhaps the academy itself, “Furious 7” didn’t win any awards at the 2016 ceremony. But in the years since being blanked by the Oscars for the blockbuster hit, the “Fast” franchise has found a different way to approach awards credibility – casting Oscar-winning stars.
So on the heels of Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren joining the “Fast” universe in previous installments, the latest film, “Fast X” (out May 19), found room for Brie Larson and Rita Moreno.

We all know that Vin Diesel is a big fan of the Family element in the Fast & Furious movies. And particularly that of his character, Dominic Toretto. As time moves forward for the Fast crew, Dom's young son Brian is aging up too, and will be played in Fast X by Leo Abelo Perry.
The child Toretto had with Elena Neves (Elsa Pataky), in 2017’s Fast & Furious 8 he was kidnapped as an infant along with his mother and used by Cipher (Charlize Theron) to blackmail Dom. Though Elena is eventually killed, he is rescued by Deckard (Jason Statham) and Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), and Dom names him after his friend Brian O’Conner (the late Paul Walker). In 2021’s Fast & Furious 9 he's seen living with Dom and stepmom Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) at their farmhouse.
