Spain’s Festival de Málaga, through its industry arm Mafiz (Málaga Festival Industry Zone), heads to the Cannes Marché du Film with five works-in-progress from burgeoning Andalusian talent.
“The Malaga Festival wants to support the completion of these works and make their international distribution viable,” commented Malaga head of industry, Annabelle Aramburu.
This year, as Cannes more broadly celebrates Spain, the event curates two titles that tackle its tumultuous history and one which takes audiences on an unconventional road trip questioning the biological clock alongside narratives that dissect the minutiae of new forms of co-existing and the baffling concept of destiny.
The second edition of Málaga Goes to Cannes takes place on Monday May 22.

The 2nd Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid has lured a large number of top showrunners and TV execs to participate in the annual event’s multiple panels over Sept. 27-30. The intense and extensive program of some 40 conferences and keynote addresses include discussions on animation, financing, creativity and talent, education, sports, artificial intelligence and platforms, among others.
Launched last year, Iberseries is conceived as an exclusive space for the intersection between business and creative talent, as well as the exchange of ideas, projects, financing and co-production opportunities among the growing ranks of the Ibero-American TV industry.
During four jampacked days, Iberseries & Platino Industria will host screenings, pitching sessions, workshops, one-on-one sessions aside from these conferences. By early September, more than 1,000 participants signed up for the mostly in-person event. Last year’s inaugural edition boasted 2,000 participants but half connected virtually, Iberseries director Samuel Castro pointed out. Some of these panels will...

Where can Netflix Spain go after hit show “Money Heist”? On Thursday, it unveiled seven new Spanish originals, including “Feria” from “Elite” creator Carlos Montero, that sketch some kind of answer and roadmap for the U.S. streaming giant in one of its European production powerhouses.
Though Netflix in Spain has seen its biggest global hits in two iconic young adult series, “Money Heist” and “Elite,” now, more than ever before, as it transforms into a general entertainment service, the U.S. streaming giant is mixing it up.
The seven new originals, set for release from 2021, run a gamut from Netflix’s first short format series to its most ambitious doc series ever, “800 Meters,” to two features, a standup special and just one drama series.
“Our vocation is to go on exciting the world with the charisma, diversity and creativity of stories made in Spain, and contribute to maintaining Spanish...

It’s game over. Spain’s “Cable Girls,” Netflix’s longest-running non-u.S. original series, will soon be history, its final five episodes of a two-part season five released on Friday.
No other Netflix original series made outside the U.S. has yet made it to five seasons, and only a few have been so popular. Aired on Netflix from Feb. 14, “Cable Girls’” season five, part one, proved the third most-binged SVOD series in the world over its first week of release, according to TV Time.
Announced in March 2016, and produced with Bambu Producciones, Spain’s first Netflix original series, which bowed in April 2017, is set in early 1929 as Alba (Blanca Suárez), a petty thief, timid country lass Marga (Nadia de Santiago) and upper-class flapper Carlota (Ana Fernandez) are hired as switchboard operators at Spain’s sole telephony company, in central Madrid.

In the mood for a Spanish-language psycho-drama? Shrew’s Nest is another Shudder exclusive and is a fun jaunt into the weird world of sisters Montse (Macarena Gómez) and Nia (Nadia de Santiago).
Montse and Nia live in an apartment in Madrid in the 1950s. Montse has raised Nia alone since their mother died in childbirth and their father disappeared some years afterwards. Whilst Nia has an outgoing and sunny disposition, Montse is a highly strung, paranoid agoraphobic, suffering crippling panic attacks if she so much as takes a step outside their home and is reliant on doses of morphine supplied by a friend and customer of her dress-tailoring business that she runs from the apartment.

When analyzing some of the more popular phobias prevalent in society, I’m surprised more filmmakers don’t utilize agoraphobia when trying to envision thrilling or horrific scenarios. Juanfer Andrés and Esteban Roel appear to agree with me, because their film Shrew’s Nest (Musarañas) wonderfully exploits one woman’s social insanity after being condemned to an apartment prison by her own fears. Agoraphobia may sound silly to most, but for its victims, passing through a domicile’s entryway is like a portal directly into hell, bringing on panic attacks, insurmountable fear and irrational dread – a fantastic wrench thrown into any horror film’s story. No, Shrew’s Nest isn’t the next great animal attack scenario (that’s Backcountry), but instead, it’s a slow-burn mystery that explodes like a fireworks finale once the side effects of agoraphobia transform in a wild fit of genre psychosis.

Family can be a mysterious and dangerous matrix of locked doors and supressed secrets, with loving family members willing to do almost anything to preserve a thin veneer of moral unity. That’s the central premise of Shrew’s Nest, another gory, effective entry in the recent plague of Spanish shock cinema which has infected markets beyond the Iberian motherland. Restricted to one expansive apartment in a post-civil war Madrid, the film unfolds as an interlocking cavalcade of cause and effect, leading to a the illumination of a family’s most brutal and buried secrets.

A maelstrom of highly-charged, dysfunctional family dynamics, Shrew's Nest (Musarañas) unleashes a torrent of pent-up emotions in the form of a bloody suspense thriller. The movie sets up easily as a two-hander about the tense relationship between Montse (Macarena Gómez) and her much younger sister (Nadia de Santiago), who has just turned 18. With both parents long out of the picture, Montse has become a stern maternal figure; she's a fragile creature who can only exercise her authority by dispensing corporal punishment to the younger woman as she sees fit. Further complicating the relationship, Montse suffers from agoraphobia, so she can't step one foot out of their apartment before collapsing in a fit of anxiety and stress. Montse's sister has learned to get along by...

Over the years, Tiff’s Midnight Madness programme has lost some of its grit. Once upon a time, a film as bodacious as Shrew’s Nest would have graced its lineup. Now, the Vanguard programme seems to have stepped up to take its place. While Madness highlights trendier, more easily digestible content, Vanguard takes on the more obscure. Sexy, gritty, dirty, and horrific, Vanguard’s content is far more outlandish than its older, now slightly more restrained cousin. Odd when you consider that both programmes are curated by the jovial horror fanatic Colin Geddes.

There's little doubt when you see the name Álex de la Iglesia, that you're in for something unusual so it's no surprise that Shrew's Nest, which is presented by de la Iglesia, looks like a twisted bit of horror.
Macarena Gómez and Nadia De Santiago star as shut-in sisters, one of whom despises the other. When the upstairs neighbour falls down the stairs and drags himself to the sisters' door, he's brought into the sisters' sanctum though from the looks of it, he would have been better off leaving himself on the stairwell to be found by a passerby. The Dark Hour, or La Hora Fria is a Spanish language horror film that was completed in 2006, sent to several film festivals, and is likely moving towards a N. American release date through Lightning Entertainment (a prediction). Definitely in the sci-fi realm, The Dark Hour envisions a world in the future where mankind is on the brink of extinction. Facing starvation the few survivors, of an underground complex, make their way to the surface to find hope for a tomorrow. Already shown at The Austin Fantastic Fest, and the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, The Dark Hour has been released on DVD in Japan and Spain, but not N. America. Likely to be available shortly, a low quality trailer can be found inside, with a higher quality trailer provided from the film's homepage. Have a read of the synopsis, which predicts a bleak future of warfare and insecurity.
