Alexander Skarsgard and Harry Melling are set to lead the cast of “Pillion,” described as a “fun and filthy romance with heart” and being produced by multi-Oscar-winning powerhouse Element Pictures.
The film — to be launched in Cannes by Cornerstone, which is handling worldwide sales — marks the feature debut of Harry Lighton, whose short “Wren Boys” was nominated for best British short at the 2018 BAFTAs, was nominated for a BIFA and had its U.S. premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
“Pillion” follows Colin (Melling), a weedy wallflower letting life pass him by. That is until Ray (Skarsgård), the impossibly handsome leader of a motorbike club, takes him on as his submissive. Ray uproots Colin from his dreary suburban life, introducing him to a community of kinky, queer bikers and taking all sorts of virginities along the way. But as Colin steps deeper into Ray’s world of rules and mysteries,...

James McAvoy, the star of X-Men and The Last King of Scotland, is set to make his feature directorial debut on a film about the true story of two Scottish men who conned the international music industry by adopting American accents and pretending to be Californian rap duo, Silibil N’ Brains1
The film, which is currently untitled, will follow the exploits of Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd, who in the late 1990s were working as rappers in Scotland but found that their accents were not taken seriously in London. Andrew Haigh says that when it came to casting for All of Us Strangers, his romantic fantasy inspired by Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel Strangers, it was important that his lead — played in the film by actor Andrew Scott — be gay.
The writer-director opened up about his approach to casting and talked about shooting the movie in his childhood home and capturing its intimacy scenes alongside editor Jonathan Alberts during a post-screening discussion at the New York Film Festival on Sunday. The film follows a gay man in London who, after having a chance encounter with his neighbor, develops a relationship with the man at the same time he begins convening with the ghosts of his dead parents during brief visits to his childhood home.
During the Q&a at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Haigh explained how he thought about casting for Adam, the quiet gay screenwriter at the center of his ghostly drama.

Ebla Mari has a confession. Before she was approached for the lead role in Ken Loach’s latest (and quite possibly, last) film The Old Oak, she says she was “ashamed” to say she didn’t know who the director was.
Not that the 25-year-old really had any reason to.
As a Syrian theater teacher in the village of Majdal Shams, part of the Golan Heights that has been under Israeli military occupation since the six-day war of 1967, and with no previous screen experience, it’s understandable if Loach’s body of work — largely focussed on the troubles within U.K. society — may have passed her by. But Mari soon caught up.
In The Old Oak, she plays Yara, a Syrian refugee and recent U.K. arrival shipped off with her family to a former mining town in the northeast of England and into the center of a community torn...

If you’re a creative person plagued by insecurity, you’re in good company. Bill Nighy is an actor’s actor and a likely Oscar nominee this year (finally!) for “Living,” yet he says matter-of-factly, “I am traditionally besieged by self-doubt.” He adds dryly, “I don’t know if it’s different from anybody else because I’ve never been anybody else.”
Whenever Nighy lands a role, “I invented a hostile parallel universe where I’m about to be fired. Which is sort of a joke, but it’s tragically true. But I didn’t do it on this one.” That’s because Nighy knew that he was part of the package when the film was born.
On a panel with Nighy and “Living” director Oliver Hermanus, scripter Kazuo Ishiguro said he’d been “obsessed” with Akira Kurosawa’s 1952 “Ikiru” since he was 12 or 13. “I thought, wouldn’t it be...

The casting branch of the academy is only eight years old and doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society of America has been handing out the Artios Awards for 37 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”).
Nominees for feature films were announced on February 1 (the last day of Oscar nominations voting). Many of the leading Academy Awards contenders reaped bids across the various categories according to production cost. Winners will be revealed a virtual ceremony on March 17, which is the first day of final Oscar voting.
Last year’s big budget winners were the comedy “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and the drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7 ” while “The Forty-Year-Old Version” and “One Night in Miami” took the equivalent prizes in the independent division. “Minari” won the low budget and “The Surrogate” the micro budget prizes while “Soul” claimed the animation award.

For Kahleen Crawford, casting director for BBC and HBO series “His Dark Materials,” being successful at her job requires a gut instinct mixed with a bit of magic. “A lot of it is psychology,” she says. “You have to apply different parts of your skill set to different people in different projects.”
Crawford has often applied that skill set in the service of director Ken Loach, who gave the now 41-year-old her first job heading a department 17 years ago in 2004’s “Ae Fond Kiss,” and whose latest film, “Sorry We Missed You,” bowed in the U.S. on March 6. It’s her ninth feature with the director — and first since 2016’s Palme d’Or-winning “I, Daniel Blake.”
Loach is renowned for finding and casting unknown or non-actors, and Crawford’s goal was to find people the audience could relate to.
“Paul [Laverty, Loach’s writer for the bulk of his films] and Ken will know where they’re thinking of...

Casting directors have a strange distinction in the awards world: Their guild has an Academy branch, but it’s the only one without its own Oscar category. Imagine for a moment that they did. What are the best-cast films of 2016?
IndieWire asked 13 of the top casting directors to nominate films worthy of casting recognition this year. There were a few restrictions worth noting. Although casting directors often get early sneak peeks at films, many noted there are some films they still hadn’t seen. In particular, many are anxious to find out what legendary casting director Ellen Lewis has cooked up for Martin Scorsese’s “Silence.” The other restriction, which was imposed as responses came in: They couldn’t all write about “Moonlight.” (We’ll dig further into the casting of that film in another article.)
