You know how the end of New Amsterdam seemed to be setting up another chapter in the series? Well, we might get to see that. David Schulner, who created the medical drama (and served as executive producer and showrunner), is working on a sequel series, with the potential title of New Amsterdam: Tomorrow, at NBC, according to Deadline. It would be set 30 years after New Amsterdam and follow Max’s (Ryan Eggold) daughter, Luna (played by Molly Griggs in the series finale) as she takes on the same job her father did: Medical Director at New Amsterdam. It’s what we saw in the flashforwards in the series finale—there were quite a few callbacks to the pilot to hint at her identity, including a speech in an auditorium and asking “How can I help?”—but there’s no word yet on whether Griggs would play Luna in this potential series,...

The last time WGA picket lines formed in 2007, writers didn’t have an efficient way to communicate with fellow strikers about group meet-ups, illegal productions, and all those clever placards. The only place they could turn to for regular information was this very space, in which the late Nikki Finke would post regular missives about strike action, the broken-off negotiations and the financial impact of the 100-day work stoppage.
My, have times changed. Even with the new and so-not-improved platform under Elon Musk, Twitter has become the go-to town square for writers looking for either marching orders or just plain encouragement from their fellow strikers. When writers aren’t trying to boost morale, they are posting selfies from the picket lines and sharing locations where more reinforcements are needed to battle the AMPTP, the trade association representing the entertainment companies.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the New Amsterdam series finale “Right Place” and “How Can I Help.”] New Amsterdam may have said goodbye after five seasons on NBC, but in a time full of revivals and spinoffs, is it really the end? Hopefully not, if you ask executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton. “Give us a call. We’re there,” Schulner tells TV Insider when asked about the possibility of a spinoff. “We feel like this has got much more potential to it. It’s number three on Netflix. We’re not the only ones who feel that way. There’s a real audience response to this show, and there was even while we were on NBC,” Horton adds. “So we’re kind of feeling like we should come back in some form, but it’s not up to us. We can only sit there and charge that windmill so many times.” The drama ended with Dr. ...

In one of the stranger coincidences of the 2022-23 TV season, two medical dramas said their goodbyes on Tuesday — New Amsterdam on NBC and The Resident on Fox. It was a series finale for the former; as much as creator/showrunner David Schulner and Executive Producer Peter Horton didn’t think their five-year-old series should be canceled, they had enough time to plan a hopeful ending for the Ryan Eggold starrer.
After six seasons on Fox, The Resident hasn’t been canceled … yet. But Tuesday’s finale dubbed “All Hands On Deck” had all the makings of a final farewell. Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) got his happy ending by declaring his love for Dr. Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas). Dr. Ian Sullivan (Andrew McCarthy) came clean about his drug addiction and got to keep his job at Chastain Memorial after saving young Sammie, the granddaughter of Dr. Bell (Bruce Greenwood...

When New Amsterdam checks out after five seasons on January 17, expect the heartfelt hospital drama to go gentle into that good night. “The finale has [only] one medical story,” says showrunner David Schulner, because the majority of the two hours are driven by the characters’ personal stories: “Everyone is looking to heal — to repair the core trauma that started their journeys in the pilot episode.” That means surgeon Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) comes to terms with the idea of what it means to be a perfect family. ER doc Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) deals with the trauma of leaving her sister behind with their alcoholic mother. And psychiatrist Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine) is owning the feeling that he’s not worthy of the marriage he’s in. Ralph Bavaro/NBC Medical director Max Goodwin, meanwhile, must define his future with his ex-fiancée, doc Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman). According to Schulner, the...

After taking a timeout of sorts for its overturned Roe v. Wade episode, New Amsterdam will revisit the growing bond between Max Goodwin and Elizabeth Wilder in this Tuesday’s installment (NBC, 10/9c).
The Nov. 1 Roe v. Wade episode “actually goes back in time to July, when Max has just recently been dumped, left at the altar by Sharpe. So in Episode 7, there’s no feelings there [between Max and Elizabeth] because Max is still grieving over Sharpe,” showrunner David Schulner explains. “We couldn’t advance any relationship in Episode 7,” including Iggy and Martin’s separation, “because it happened earlier than where we are now in our timeline.

The hospital drama’s Season 4 finale was a rough one: Medical director Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) was left at the altar; psychiatrist Iggy Frome’s (Tyler Labine) husband asked him to leave their brownstone; and ER doc Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) split from her girlfriend. “We blew up everyone’s life so they can help each other recover,” explains showrunner David Schulner. The bad news: There’s only one more season of New Amsterdam. The good news: There’s plenty of time to give the NBC medical drama — and its fans — closure. “For Season 5, you want to end where you begin,” executive producer David Schulner told TV Insider recently. “I think for us, let’s go back to that energy of Season 1 and look at where we started all the characters and make sure we end them in a place where they began. So for Bloom [Janet Montgomery], it was about her addiction.” You can also look forward to meeting Bloom’s sister, “so her mom [played by Gina Gershon] can’t be far behind,” the EP teased. As for the others, Season 1, “for Iggy [Tyler Labine], was about his sense of self. And for Reynolds [Jocko Sims], it was about wanting a family,” Schulner previewed. “So looking at those core issues that we...

When New Amsterdam returns in the fall, it will feature more of one of the newest additions to the cast.
TV Line is reporting that Sandra Mae Frank has been upped to series regular for its fifth and final season.
Frank first appeared as Dr. Elizabeth Wilder on New Amsterdam Season 4 Episode 1, quickly becoming a fan favorite.
The highly anticipated New Amsterdam Season 4 finale is set to air tonight (at 10/9c on NBC).
News of the promotion comes two months on from the stunning announcement that the Ryan Eggold-fronted medical drama will end its run next season.
By the time the series wraps, it will have aired 92 episodes.
This is a shorter run than usual for a medical drama on the broadcast networks, but at least it is getting a pre-planned final season to bring all of the storylines to a close.

New Amsterdam is gearing up for an intense season finale, but there should at least be some happiness in the hour, with Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) and Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) getting married… we hope? “It’s a very challenging episode,” Tyler Labine (who plays Dr. Iggy Frome) tells TV Insider. As for how it all ends, “we love our cliffhangers, and we felt robbed by Season 2 that we weren’t able to do one because of Covid,” executive producer David Schulner admits. “It wouldn’t be New Amsterdam without a great cliffhanger.” Schulner and Labine offer a few teases about the episode. Max & Helen’s Wedding Takes an Unexpected Turn Labine couldn’t reveal much about the event, only to call it “a beautiful setting,” reminding us, “the gang does the rooftop up real nice.” We can “expect something unexpected,” however, which is no surprise from the NBC medical drama.
