His paintings are in the collections of major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
He taught at the Pratt Institute and Brooklyn College.
He studied art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), where he met Andy Warhol.
He served in the US army in WWII in Italy as a graphic artist, designing road signs and other visual media.
