Daniel Fienberg’s Top 10
When we look back on television in 2023, it’s almost certain to stand out as a year of transition.
The cyclical conclusion of what we’ve come to know as Peak TV intersected with an unprecedented, production-halting strike by two key industry guilds wanting proper compensation and protections against whatever is coming next.
None of this meant there was a lack of new programming, mind you, but it led to unusually staggered release windows and more high-profile unscripted and international offerings than ever before. Plus, there was a run of series finales for some of the more acclaimed shows of the past decade, climaxing in that wild week in which Succession, Barry and Ted Lasso all ended.
It’s too soon to necessarily know what TV will look like in 2024 or 2025, but I’m confident the basic answer will be “different,” and not just because so...

Your favorite AMC titles could be popping up on Netflix, Hulu and other streaming services in the near future.
AMC is not ready to close the doors on its various streaming services just yet. It claims just 11.1 million streaming customers total, and with the rise of monstrous platforms like Netflix with hundreds of millions of users, it has almost felt like a foregone conclusion that AMC+, Shudder and other AMC streamers will wink out of existence sooner or later. AMC licensed seven titles to Warner Bros. Discovery to stream on that company’s platform Max in September. The licensing agreement brought more attention to AMC+, and AMC CEO Kristin Dolan says her company is open to similar deals with other streamers. This article contains spoilers for Reservation Dogs season 3 episode 10.
With the premiere of its final episode, FX’s Reservation Dogs has officially been sent off that good way. The season 3 finale, titled “Dig,” is filled with indelible moments that neatly wrap up three superb seasons and prepare the titular Rez Dogs for a glorious future to come.
Amid all that excitement, however, is one little in-joke that the less attentive viewer may have missed. As the town of Okern, Oklahoma gathers in the local church to pay their respects to departed Old Man Fixico (Richard Ray Whitman), several well-wishers assemble around the medicine man’s casket. One of those mourners is local constable/lighthorseman Big (Zahn McClarnon).
“Thank you for changing my life, brother,” a tearful Big says to Fixico before placing a hardcover book in his coffin.
Upon a closer inspection, the book is titled Man Moon. It also...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains detains of the Reservation Dogs series finale “Dig,” which dropped late last night on Hulu.
“I’m leaving,” Elora (Devery Jacobs) tells Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai) in the Reservation Dogs series finale as they sit before the coffin of Old Man Fixico (Richard Ray Whitman). “It’s awesome … I’m proud of you,” Bear replies after a pause, giving his best friend his support. “I mean, of course, I’m going to miss you,” he adds, as the duo tell each other with tears how much they truly love each other after all they have been through over the show’s three seasons.

“Reservation Dogs” ended its three-season run on Wednesday with a funeral — but also with a lot of joy. In bringing almost all of the show’s characters into one place for one final gathering, co-creator Sterlin Harjo said his goal was to show how “Reservation Dogs” was much bigger than just the kids at its heart.
“It’s not just for kids on the rez,” Harjo told Variety. “It is their whole community. And we see that by going back into the past with some of the elders. We see that by learning more about the other characters. I wanted to illustrate that in the finale, which is all of them coming together for a goodbye to one of their own.”
As the episode draws to a close, the town celebrates as they pay tribute to the passing of Fixico (Richard Ray Whitman).

AMC is heading into more Dark Winds.
The cable network has renewed the crime drama for a third season, coming a couple of weeks after season two finished its run.
The series is planned to premiere in early 2025, a noticeable shift from the summer premiere of its first two seasons, but understandable given the writers and actors strike.
It comes after Dark Winds made its debut on Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max service as part of a two-month pop-up.
Dark Winds stars Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon and Jessica Matten.
The first season of the series, which is produced by AMC Studios, drew 2.2M viewers on AMC for its June 2022 launch in Live+3 ratings. The company said that the second season averaged 1.7M viewers each week in Live+3, per Nielsen and saw “significant” viewership and acquisition gains from season one on AMC+.

This article contains spoilers for Dark Winds season 2.
The acclaimed AMC+ neo-noir series Dark Winds, created by Graham Roland and based on the Leaphorn & Chee novel series by Tony Hillerman, has just wrapped its second season. Going deeper, darker, and more violent than its inaugural season, Dark Winds places protagonist Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) on a more personal and grueling gauntlet that leads him to journey through his own heart of darkness. This isn’t to say that the second season is an introspective story, the season kicks off with a literal bang, but it does strike particularly closer to home for Leaphorn.
Drawing elements from Hillerman’s 1980 novel People of Darkness, the second season starts out with its two leads investigating different cases before inevitably bringing them back together. Early in the third and final season of FX/Hulu’s Reservation Dogs, Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai) finds himself peering up at a glittering night sky with Maximus (Graham Greene), the conspiracy theorist who’s temporarily taken him under his wing. “In order to observe the universe, you must put your back to the future and fix your eyes on the past,” Maximus advises him. “Celestial events that occurred long ago, we still see remnants of them. Writer and creator Sterlin Harjo promised that the Season 3 finale of “Reservation Dogs” would serve as the perfect ending to the FX series on Hulu. It’s a bold claim in a culture that often sees fans ripping finales and their writers apart. But if the first few episodes of Season 3 are any indication, it’s more than likely our beloved Rez Dogs will get as close to perfect as possible.
From the first four episodes of the final season available for review, it’s clear the writers know exactly what the viewers want: Surreal spirits and quirky side characters guiding and challenging the young crew. Storytelling that manages to weave together the silly and absurd with some of the harsh realities Native populations have had to face over generations (the atrocities and aftermath of Indian boarding schools get called out on more than one occasion this season). And of course,...

Early in the new season of Dark Winds, a wealthy woman hires Jim Chee to help recover a lockbox that was stolen from her home. A skeptical Chee says that the job sounds simple, “Except nothing ever is.”
You definitely cannot call Dark Winds Season Two simple. It features a pair of mysteries that inevitably connect in complicated ways that can at times require intense concentration to follow. Just as importantly, the series is even more ambitious in its depiction of life, death, and policing on a Navajo reservation in the early Seventies.

Exclusive: Nicholas Logan and Jeri Ryan have joined the cast of Dark Winds, AMC’s Western noir thriller series based on Tony Hillerman’s popular Leaphorn & Chee book series. Logan joins as a Season 2 series regular and Ryan in a recurring role opposite Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon in the series from creator Graham Roland and executive producers George R.R. Martin and Robert Redford.
The castings reaffirm AMC’s commitment to Dark Winds, which has been a critical and commercial breakout, following a string of pickup reversal decisions by the network in the past few weeks done as a cost-cutting move.
Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (McClarnon) of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes.
Logan plays Colton Wolf, a twisted assassin with a secret that puts him on a collision course with Lt.

Dark Winds is getting a showrunner change for season two.
The breakout AMC series will see John Wirth take over showrunning duties for the sophomore run, replacing Vince Calandra, who served as showrunner and exec producer on season one.
Wirth is no stranger to the network, having served as showrunner on Hell on Wheels for four seasons and exec produced Hap and Leonard.
It comes after the network renewed the Native-led Western noir crime thriller, which stars Zahn McClarnon, for a second six-episode run in June.
The series, which is produced by AMC Studios, performed well for the network, drawing 2.2M viewers for its June 12 launch in live+3 ratings and becoming its number one new series launch for its streaming service AMC+.

Reservation Dogs is back and throwing the teens at the center of the series on Hulu plenty of challenges in Season 2. As viewers see in the opening two episodes, Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), and Cheese (Lane Factor) work on breaking a curse they unleashed on their “enemy” Jackie (Elva Guerra), who took off with their friend Elora (Devery Jacobs). Told that any bad medicine will come back to haunt them, the curse also has an effect on Jackie and Elora’s intended journey to California. (Credit: Shane Brown/FX) Car troubles, predatory travelers, and dangerous countryfolk lead the girls to the front door of a lonely divorcee named Anna (played by Megan Mullally). There, she feeds them and grants access to showers, beds, and more, but after some concerning comments, Elora and Jackie bounce before the morning comes, boosting Anna’s truck for a drive back towards the home they know.

Part of what made “Reservation Dogs” one of the most exciting new shows of 2021 was the sense that anything could happen on the FX dramedy — a quality it shares with “Atlanta,” along with that series’ deceptively laidback sensibility and ability to establish a sense of place that goes beyond the geographical.
A storyline that might have seemed pleasantly aimless at first would veer into more urgent territory, and then loop back around to the amiable hijinks of the Rez Dogs themselves: Elora (Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs), Bear (D’Pharoah Woon-a-Tai), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) and Cheese (Lane Factor). The mundane could turn to the surreal; the transcendent, downright goofy. This was a coming-of-age story like no other, except when it was — coursing with alienation, frustration and all the feelings that the concept of “home” stirs up. And at the center of it all was the palpable heartbreak felt by four longtime...

‘Reservation Dogs’ Review: Season 2 of Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi’s FX/Hulu Comedy Is a Triumph
Click here to read the full article.
Everybody loves multiverses these days, so allow me to imagine that there’s an alternate universe in which the first season of FX/Hulu’s Reservation Dogs is nominated for outstanding comedy series at the Emmys next month. In addition, Devery Jacobs is up for lead actress in a comedy; Zahn McClarnon, Gary Farmer and possibly Wes Studi are nominated in guest acting categories; and series creator Sterlin Harjo is nominated for directing the series pilot and possibly multiple times for writing.
In our primary universe, the one in which you’re probably reading this review, members of the TV Academy failed to notice that Reservation Dogs even exists, giving it zero nominations. That means that even casting director Angelique Midthunder, who scoured North America for the show’s impeccable ensemble, didn’t make the cut, which makes me actively angry.
But this...

There’s a desperate restlessness at the heart of the first, fantastic season of “Reservation Dogs.” Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi’s FX series, which premiered last August, kept a watchful eye out for the strange, and strangely beautiful, moments woven into each hazy day for four best friends reeling from the sudden death of their fifth. It took no time at all to understand Bear (D’Pharoah Woon-a-Tai), Elora (Devery Jacobs), Cheese (Lane Factor) and Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), nor to slip into the show’s world where the banal could meet the surreal at any given moment.
The same holds true in Season 2, which opens just hours after Elora’s not only skipped town with laconic bully Jackie (Elva Guerra) and all their money, but has also left a furious, confused Bear behind. The implosion of the group’s California dream, seemingly the only thing keeping them going after such an inexplicable tragedy,...
