Adam Green will be honored with a new tribute album, dubbed Moping in Style, that features renditions of his solo music from artists including Regina Spektor, Father John Misty, and Jenny Lewis. The project arrives in full December 1st, and as a preview, Org Music and Capitane Records have shared Sean Ono Lennon’s cover of “That Fucking Feeling.”
Best known as one-half of The Moldy Peaches, Green has released 11 solo albums over the past twenty years. The impressive roster on Moping in Style speaks to his influence in the indie rock community: in addition to those aforementioned artists, it boasts The Lemon Twigs, Frankie Cosmos, Lou Barlow, The Lemonheads, The Libertines, and Ben Kweller among its contributors. Pre-orders for the tribute album, which arrives on double LP gatefold and CD, are ongoing.

It’s Frasier Week at IndieWire. Grab some tossed salad and scrambled eggs, settle into your coziest easy chair, and join us. We’re listening.
Finish these sentences. (1) “Now, this is a story all about how…” (2) “They’re creepy and they’re kooky, they’re all together…” (3) “Mom and Dad and Vicky always giving him…” (4) “Who’s that girl? It’s…“ (5) “Hey baby, I heard the blues a callin’…”
The best TV theme songs simultaneously stick in our brains and serve as chapter markers for the shows we love, both compelling us to keep knocking back more episodes and subtly organizing our thoughts about the many stories in the series they anchor. Some themes hang with us for the worse; what ’90s parent didn’t have “Elmo’s World” burned into their brain? Some others are memorable for their intensely enjoyable earworm qualities; see “I Dream of Jeannie” and “Green Acres” for details.

George Harrison was less interested in guitars and more interested in another instrument when he wrote The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” He revealed another rock star helped him create the song. Prince gifted the world with an awe-inspiring cover of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”
Why people love The Beatles’ ‘Why My Guitar Gently Weeps’
“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” has interesting lyrics. However, it’s most beloved for its guitar riffs. That’s ironic, given George’s mindset at the time.
The book George Harrison on George Harrison: Interviews and Encounters includes an interview from 1977. In that interview, George discussed the composition of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” “Well, for eight studio dates, and then I’d get the guitar out and just play, you know, learn a part and play for the record.” he said. “But I’d really lost a lot of interest in the guitar.

The Strokes invited Regina Spektor on-stage for a rare rendition of their 2004 collaboration “Modern Girls and Old Fashion Men” at Queens, New York’s Forest Hills Stadium on Saturday.
The reunion was not only notable for its meeting of two cherished hometown acts, but also the live revival of the duet that first appeared as a b-side on the 2004 “Reptilia” single. The Strokes and Spektor last performed the song in-concert at New York’s The Theater at Madison Square Garden in 2003.
“It only took 20 years but look who showed up,” The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas teased as Spektor stepped up to the mic. “They love you, kid.”
Spektor answered the crowd’s uproarious approval by shouting, “My favorite band in my favorite city!” Then, gauging their palpable anticipation, Casablancas added, “Y’all know the song” before diving in. Watch the homecoming performance of “Modern Girls and Old Fashion Men” below.

This article contains spoilers for all episodes of The Idol.
The Idol was dead long before it ever even took the stage.
On March 1, 2023, more than three months prior to The Idol‘s June 4 premiere, Rolling Stone published a sordid expose on the behind-the-scenes troubles of the HBO show. With a headline proclaiming “The Idol: How HBO’s Next ‘Euphoria’ Became Twisted ‘Torture Porn,'” Cheyenne Roundtree’s excellent, thoroughly-researched feature reported how production on the show had gotten out of hand.
After original co-showrunner Amy Seimetz left the project due to “creative differences” (which apparently included frustration with producer and star Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye’s limited availability), HBO had roughly 75-80% of a finished show that no one was happy with. So they essentially started from scratch with Tesfaye and co-producer/Euphoria creator Sam Levinson in expanded creative roles, ballooning the project’s budget and taking it sharply...

HBO's new series "The Idol" follows Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn, a pop star getting ready to stage her comeback. If that sounds too basic, don't worry. The series follows Jocelyn as she gets wrapped up in a cult run by Tedros Tedros, played by The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye. Jocelyn's story has some real-life analogs, though the fictional pop star isn't based on any one specific singer. And as viewers get to hear Jocelyn's music for the first time, they might wonder if that's really Depp singing in the show. In fact, fans of the series may be curious about other cast members' onscreen vocals, as well.
Is Lily-Rose Depp Singing in "The Idol"?
Yes, Depp is providing Jocelyn's singing voice - and she was really nervous about it.
For her audition, Depp had to sing a cappella. She sang a minute of the song "Fever." "I thought, Here's where I don't get called back,...

For those who’ve seen Joshua Ray Walker perform, they know his voice can alternately hush and rouse a crowd. (Catch him perform “Voices” if you ever get the chance and be amazed.) The Texas songwriter delivers one of his most dynamic recorded takes on “Cuz I Love You” — a Lizzo cover that announces his new album What Is It Even?.
The rendition arrives with a music video that finds Walker flirting with gender norms. What is it even? How about a vocalist confident in who he is as an artist.

The four panelists on “The Masked Singer” are having a hard time narrowing down the identity of the secret celebrity hiding inside the Medusa costume. The snake-haired villainess performed a pitch-perfect rendition of “Happier Than Ever” during the season premiere and left the judges “speechless.” She returned in Episode 2 with “Dancing Queen” and won the crown yet again. Medusa then performed “New York, New York” in Episode 3, but lost the vote to California Roll, however she was saved by the “Ding Dong Keep It On” Bell and won the comeback competition. She then advanced from the quarter-finals and the semi-finals, which means she will appear in the season finale. Do You know who she is? Read on for the judges’ “The Masked Singer” Medusa guesses.

Claud is turning from Super Monster to Supermodels with their second album, due out July 14th on Saddest Factory. Ahead of its release, the Phoebe Bridgers associate has shared the new single “Every Fucking Time.”
Thematically, Supermodels deals with the universal trials of growing up, though Claud’s subject matter is likely turned up to 10 since they’ve grown up in the public eye. The LP — written after the artist toured with Bridgers and Bleachers and released on the heels of opening gigs for Paramore and Le Tigre — tracks Claud’s journey from their childhood bedroom to their own apartment in New York City. Pre-orders are ongoing.
“Every Fucking Time” begins with melancholy acoustic guitar as Claud looks back on a fraught relationship — if you can’t agree on the merits of Regina Spektor, how are you going to make it? “I can’t believe it when you say you love me/ ‘Cause with you,...

When Annie Blackman was 13, she met Taylor Swift. It was the fall of 2011, and like countless middle schoolers, she’d been listening all year to Speak Now, marveling at perfectly phrased darts like “Dear John” and “Mean.”
“I started the whole music journey as a big Taylor Swift girl,” Blackman, 24, says over coffee at a Bushwick, Brooklyn cafe. “I remember she wrote that album entirely by herself. There was this obtainability to it: ‘Oh my God. She got successful by just writing her own music.’”

The Beatles‘ The White Album is one of the greatest albums in the history of classic rock. In addition, it’s one of the longer albums in the rock canon, clocking in at over 90 minutes. Here’s a look at the five best tracks on the album.
The Beatles | Bettmann / Contributor 5. ‘Revolution 1’
The Beatles released a hard-rockin’ version of this song, simply called “Revolution,” and a slower version called “Revolution 1.” The faster version was a hit single while “Revolution 1” appeared on The Beatles’ The White Album.
According to a 1980 interview from the book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, John preferred “Revolution 1.” He liked the slower rendition of the song because he wanted listeners to be able to make out the lyrics. Both recordings are great, but “Revolution 1” is arguably more important in their discography. Its loose and bluesy style paved the...

It stands to reason some classic rock songs would take inspiration from the Bible, the most popular book of all time. For example, Queen released multiple songs based on the Bible. In addition, Leonard Cohen combined two Bible stories in one song.
The Bible | Bromberger Hoover Photography / Contributor 5. The Byrds’ ‘Turn! Turn! Turn!’
Pete Seeger wrote “Turn! Turn! Turn!” based on a passage from the Book of Ecclesiastes. While the book can be nihilistic at points, the song is very pretty and smooth. It became smoother when The Byrds covered it. According to The Billboard Book of Number 1 Hits, “Turn! Turn! Turn!” is the No. 1 single with the oldest lyrics.
Decades later, “Turn! Turn! Turn!” remains one of the most famous classic rock songs based on the Bible. Despite this, Seeger told Beliefnet in 2006 he did not think the Bible was completely true. In addition, he believed everything was God and God was everything.

Among the 15 shortlisted titles eligible for an Oscar nomination for best documentary feature this year are two music-focused films that each highlight the career and legacy of internationally beloved performers.
Sony Pictures Classics’ Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song offers a biography of the Canadian poet and songwriter, framed by what is arguably his most famous song. Using “Hallelujah” as the springboard for the deep dive into Cohen’s artistic and writing process, the film reveals that Cohen spent years writing the song that would define his legacy — only for it to struggle to find an audience when it was released on the 1984 album Various Positions.
But it was through the cover renditions of the song — recorded by artists such as John Cale, Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright, the latter of whom was featured on the soundtrack for Shrek — that the song became Cohen’s most recognizable. And considering...

The film Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song proffers the supposition that the multifaceted and layered career of the poet/singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen can be extrapolated by studying his enduring and internationally renowned composition “Hallelujah.” While there may be far more to explore about this remarkable man’s life than can be contained in one documentary, this piece by Daniel Geller and Dayna Goldfine does an extraordinary job in doing just that.
As a whole, the film chronicles Cohen’s song, “Hallelujah,” long (and dramatic) journey from rejection to international acclaim. The film also explores the many artists for which the song served as a sort of gauge for their own creative output or spirituality.
Artists like John Cale, Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, Brandi Carlile, Eric Church, Judy Collins, Glen Hansard, Myles Kennedy, Sharon Robinson, and Regina Spektor are all allotted ample time to extol the virtues and nuances of Cohen’s composition,...

Ahead of her eighth studio album, Home, Before and After, Regina Spektor has shared the project’s latest single, “Loveology.” The singer first premiered the track in a few live settings in 2019, including in a debut appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers ahead of her Broadway residency.
“With ‘Loveology,’ I wrote it and then played it once or twice live,” Spektor shared in a statement. “Sometimes I’ll have a song that I’m really glad exists, but I can’t record it because every time I try, it...

"Unlocking the mysteries of life was his primary preoccupation." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed the official trailer for the documentary film titled Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song, which premiered at both the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals last year. Yes, they made an entire doc about one song! But it's about so much more than that. Hallelujah examines the legendary poet and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen through the lens of the hymn "Hallelujah," arguably his most famous and certainly most covered work. Rufus Wainwright, Brandi Carlile, Judy Collins, Regina Spektor, Amanda Palmer, and Eric Church, among others, appear in the documentary and have all recorded and performed their own versions of the emotional song. Other interviewees include his long-time artistic collaborator Sharon Robinson; John Lissauer, arranger of the original version of "Hallelujah"; record industry legend Clive Davis; and Larry "Ratso" Sloman, an ex-Rolling Stone reporter, who shares never-before-heard, unedited...

“For me there’s something so magical about the show because it doesn’t traffic in cynicism,” declares Josh Gad about his passion project “Central Park,” the animated musical comedy series that he co-created, co-writes and stars in. Funnily enough, the same can also be said about romantic comedy “Wolf Like Me,” Gad’s other TV project this past season on which he stars opposite Isla Fisher. Both projects feature Gad at his most lovable, showing once again how good he is at portraying endearingly quirky and unvarnished characters. They also naturally reflect his inclination to work on projects that provide much needed levity during some particularly challenging times. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
In Peacock’s “Wolf Like Me,” Gary (Gad) is a single father living in Adelaide, Australia with his 11-year-old daughter Emma (Ariel Donoghue), both still grieving the death of Emma’s mother. They encounter Mary (Fisher), a reclusive,...

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is going dark again this week after its host was seemingly struck by another bout of Covid.
The CBS show announced it would “not be taping new episodes until further notice” saying that Colbert is “experiencing symptoms consistent with a recurrence of Covid”.
“Out of an abundance of caution for his staff, guests, and audience, he will be isolating for a few additional days,” the show’s Twitter feed added.
It comes after The Late Show was forced to cancel a show on April 21 after Colbert contracted the virus.
Colbert joked on social media that the news marked the “worst sequel ever”.
Guests on tonight’s show were set to include Sarah Silverman, Shaquille O’Neal and a musical performance by Sharon Van Etten. Elsewhere, this week, guests due to appear included Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, Tracy Letts, Jean Smart, Hugh Dancy, Jake Tapper,...

Has the “skip” option made main title theme songs redundant? Hardly if you consider how some of the top-shelf shows of the streaming era have married music so effectively with the tone of the accompanying series.
It’s not a new phenomenon. Hearing Alabama 3’s “Woke Up This Morning” is so evocative of its parent series, “The Sopranos,” that you feel as though you’re riding shotgun with Tony Soprano as he winds his way down the New Jersey Turnpike. Same goes for the eerie and multi-layered theme of “Six Feet Under” from Thomas Newman, an instrumental that seems to never get old, no matter how many times you hear it, nor does it even sound dated. This also applies to Ramin Djawadi, whose score work for “Game of Thrones” is not only award-winning, but essential to the opening credits of the series, which mapped out the areas of...

At the age of 14, Orla Gartland could be found in her bedroom strumming away on her acoustic guitar daydreaming of crowds to serenade with her favorite songs. Now at 26, the London-based Irish singer-songwriter - who's been compared to St. Vincent, Stevie Nicks, and Haim - has just released her Woman on the Internet debut album in which she explores the ups, downs, and "unglamorous" chaos of her 20s.
Born and raised in Dublin, Gartland kickstarted her music career as a YouTuber in 2009 when she posted a cover of "Broken Strings" by Nelly Furtado and James Morrison under the name MusicMaaad. "I was obsessed with the song when I was learning to play guitar," she told Popsugar. "So I, very early on, made my guitar teacher teach it to me. That was my first YouTube video. “I lived, and I learned,” Taylor Swift sings 85 minutes into the expanded, rerecorded version of her breakthrough 2008 album, Fearless. Less than two years ago, Swift announced she’d be redoing her back catalog to reclaim ownership of her early material after the master recordings of her Big Machine discography were acquired by industry mogul Scooter Braun. The goal of this ambitious undertaking is plain enough. To borrow a phrase from “Tim McGraw”: When you think Fearless, Swift hopes you think “Taylor’s Version.”

Hulu’s anticipated biopic of one of Jazz music’s most iconic voices, “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” premieres this week, and features singer and actress Andra Day in her breakout role as Lady Day.
The film directed by Lee Daniels examines Holiday’s prolific and groundbreaking career as a jazz singer, and also focuses on the U.S. government’s plots to silence her and prevent her from using her voice to keep inspiring a growing civil rights movement that was beginning to take hold in the 1960s. “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” will begin streaming on Hulu Feb. 26.
Andra Day isn’t new to showbiz — she’s been a professional R&b singer since 2015. But for most moviegoers, “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” will be their introduction to Day, so here are a few facts about the actress’ life and work leading up to this momentous role.

The streaming charts are filled with genre-agnostic artists — Post Malone, Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish — groomed in a world where continually curating one’s digital self-image is a prerequisite of modern existence. Rapping cowboys and teens with the voice of Regina Spektor and the fashion sense of a Juggalo are the new norm. Taken to its logical conclusion, this phenomenon leads to artists like Rmr — a masked singer who went viral interpolating a Rascal Flatts song, set a video that nearly parodied your average trap visual — as quickly as it seeks to defang them.

The entertainment industry’s “unsung heroes” — as Quentin Tarantino has described Mary Ramos for her significant contribution to his entire filmography — celebrated the outstanding achievements of their peers at the 10th annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards on Thursday night at the Wiltern. And who can blame these hardworking but vastly underpaid professionals for tooting their own horns since the Motion Picture Academy refuses to validate their work with an Oscar category? Coincidentally, the winners also helped to shine a light on critically acclaimed films featuring black casts that were snubbed by the Academy, much like music supervisors themselves.
The big news of the night: Women rock! Unlike every other Hollywood award show, the majority of winners — 10 out of 15, in fact — were female. (But then this may be the only guild that has nearly achieved gender parity among members and women outnumber men as board members.) “I met Quentin Tarantino 28 years ago and after that,...

In the ten years since the Guild of Music Supervisors was formed, the organization has come a long way. Granted, the job still involves low pay, long hours and little respect, but at least the craft has been validated with Grammy and Emmy categories introduced by the Recording Academy and the Television Academy, respectively. The Gms has its own presence during awards season, as it hosts its own annual awards ceremony on Feb. 6 at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.
