“Project Runway” has taken a few weeks off for the holiday season, but it’ll be back on January 6 with its seven remaining designers competing for the season 19 title. While we wait for its return, let’s take a look at the show’s first nine weeks of challenges. Specifically, who has had the worst look of the season? Click above to see the gallery of the eliminated designs — as well as the last-place designs that were spared elimination. And scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
The season started with a team challenge — always a difficult way for designers to express their artistic points of view — and the elimination of Caycee Black for an unflattering coat dress that looked like a bathrobe. But losing a designer under such circumstances in the first week is always especially tough. Black is not the only contestant...

Setting yourself apart from your fellow designers is the key to winning “Project Runway,” so of course prevailing in the week-to-week design challenges is important along the way. Not only does it earn you immunity from elimination in the following challenge in the earlier weeks of the season, it also crucially establishes your reputation in the eyes of the judges. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so scroll down to see the looks that won each challenge this season, and decide for yourself if they really deserved such high praise.

“It sucks to go early because I know I can do some really cool stuff,” said Darren Apolonio in his farewell confessional at the end of “Project Runway’s” fourth challenge, “Flower Power.” But “leaving this competition, I am a much more aware designer and person.” Do you think the judges were right to send him home, or should he have gotten another chance to impress them? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.

Apolonio struggled from the very beginning of the competition. He was on the winning team in the season premiere, “A Colorful Return,” and he even had one of the top two looks … except he had struggled to execute his design so the look that went down the runway was mostly created by his teammate Bones Jones.

It was a rough couple of weeks for “Project Runway” designer Kenneth Barlis. In “#Streetwear,” he was berated by fellow contestant Meg Ferguson when he asked if she would feel comfortable switching models with him so he could design his Asian-inspired look for an Asian model. Ferguson withdrew from the show after that blowup and the turmoil didn’t help Barlis’s design, landing him in the bottom two. But then in the very next challenge, “If You Got It, Haunt It,” he was eliminated from the competition. What did you think of his ouster?
“I am actually sad leaving ‘Project Runway’ right now because I know that I can do so much more,” he said in his confessional upon leaving the show. But “it made me stronger, and I am not done yet. I’m just barely starting. I know that I gave it all. That gives me peace of mind,...

It takes a lot to win “Project Runway.” It’s hard enough just not to lose every week since the designers only get one or two days to create an entire look from scratch. So there’s no shame in having an off day. Nevertheless, these are the worst looks of season 19 according to the judges. Did they get it right by picking these as the poorest designs? Or did you think any of them were criminally underrated? Scroll down to see the losing looks, updating each week as the season progresses.
The season started with 16 designers: Octavio Aguilar, Darren Apolonio, Kenneth Barlis, Caycee Black, Bones Jones, Coral Castillo, Meg Ferguson, Prajje Oscar Jean-Baptiste, Kristina Kharlashkina, Katie Kortman, Shantall Lacayo, Chasity Sereal, Sabrina Spanta, Aaron Michael Steach, Zayden Skipper, and Anna Zhou.

On last week’s second episode of “Project Runway” season 19, a “#Streetwear” challenge threw the design studio into chaos when Meg Ferguson became openly hostile to Kenneth Barlis over his request to switch models with him for cultural representation reasons. The verbal altercation escalated and reverberated throughout the studio, culminating in Meg’s decision to voluntarily leave the competition. Series judges Nina Garcia, Brandon Maxwell and Elaine Welteroth, joined by host and mentor Christian Siriano this season, all agreed that after Meg’s exit none of the other designers should be eliminated.

“Project Runway’s” week-two “#Streetwear” challenge was contentious: Meg Ferguson quit the show after cursing out Kenneth Barlis for wanting to switch models. (It was a long story.) Barlis ended up in the bottom three with Katie Kortman and Darren Apolonio, but because Ferguson withdrew from the competition (especially under such contentious circumstances), the judges decided not to eliminate anyone. But they probably won’t be so generous for tonight’s third challenge.
As of this writing Kortman is the likeliest designer to be eliminated, according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing. She gets 69/20 odds of being sent home. In “#Streetwear” she was praised for her specific point of view but also criticized for her unflattering silhouette and proportions and for taking her colorful aesthetic too far into childishness and kitsch. We saw that a couple of seasons ago when Hester Sunshine‘s style...

I may be in the minority on this, but I hate drama and conflict on reality shows. Especially talent competition shows. I came here to watch you dance, hear you sing, or admire your creativity. If you’re “not here to make friends,” that’s all well and good, but why go out of your way to make enemies? The good news about the “#Streetwear” drama on “Project Runway,” though, is that it was a teachable moment for anyone who wants to know how best to support marginalized communities. During Thursday night’s show, designer Meg Ferguson demonstrated exactly what not to do.
It started when she was discussing ideas with her fellow competitor Prajje Oscar Jean-Baptiste. The Haitian-born designer wanted to create a look inspired by centuries of struggle and exploitation for the island nation, but he was the last to choose models, and he felt uncomfortable designing his...

“Project Runway” made a triumphant return for its 19th season by embracing the spirit of revival in New York City with a “colorful” premiere on October 14. Series judges Nina Garcia, Brandon Maxwell and Elaine Welteroth joined host and mentor Christian Siriano as well as 16 fresh designers who in week one competed in a two-team face off of monochromatic looks within “warm” and “cool” color palettes. Bones Jones led the warm team as the overall winner while Caycee Black was sent home from the cool team for her unfinished garment. This week the designers worked on their own to create a three-piece streetwear look with an impact, but one designer’s point of view had the most dramatic impact on the entire competition.
