Screen Australia has announced nearly $2 million of production funding for two documentaries through the Commissioned program and eight through the Producer Program.
The projects include series Could You Survive on the Breadline? exploring financial disadvantage for Sbs; The Secret World of Fungi, a documentary for IMAX; and a series investigating racism in Australia called Unheard.
There’s also Medalia Productions and Sweetshop & Green’s feature documentary Prisoner X, coincidentally about the same man – and with the same title – as the narrative series Fremantle Australia announced it is developing with Stephen Corvini and Israeli production company Abot Hameiri.
Screen Australia’s head of content Sally Caplan said: “We’re very pleased to support these documentaries that will shine a light on issues including mental health and wellbeing, racism and the natural environment, and are sure to spark conversations. We’re excited to back the first ever Israeli documentary co-production with compelling feature Prisoner X,...

Screen Australia has announced more than $2.5 million in production funding for 12 documentaries; five through the commissioned program, six through the Producer program and one via the Indigenous department.
The agency also re-confirmed today that the existing documentary guidelines, including Pep, will remain in place until the end of 2020-21.
Despite consulting widely with the sector as to how to revamp the programs back in 2019, Screen Australia made the decision back in April to delay changes given the disruption of Covid-19 on the sector. A timeline for rolling out the new guidelines is expected in due course.
Among the projects announced today include a number exploring the recent devastating bushfire season, including ABC series Rebuilding Mallacoota, online doco Black Summer, and feature The Front from director Eddie Martin, which will weave user-generated first hand footage with news coverage.
The project funded via the Indigenous department is the recently announced Nitv feature documentary Incarceration Nation.

Before Struggle Street premiered on Sbs, writer-producer Marc Radomsky expected some controversy from its depiction of the hard scrabble lives of the disadvantaged residents of Mount Druitt.
Even before the three-part documentary went to air, Radomsky says he wasn.t prepared for the extreme .level of vitriol. from right wing commentators, the tabloids, other networks and Blacktown Mayor Stephen Bali.
The more so because only Bali, who accused the producers of treating its subjects with contempt and of falsifying scenes, had been invited by Sbs to a preview.
Radomsky will speak about his experiences at an Ozdox forum, The Ethics of Documentary Filmmaking, chaired by director/producer Rod Freedman at Aftrs Theatre on July 9.
Among the other participants, Jennifer Peedom will reveal how she felt dealing with unexpected and foreseen deaths in her films Sherpa, Solo and Living The End
