Cuttingly sharp and incisive Sf horror; a chillingly polite film about the fascism that rises quickly up in a moment of fearful crisis. I’m “biast” (pro): eager for some fresh zombie movie meat…
I’m “biast” (con): …but tired of the same old leftovers
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
In a slightly alternate universe to our own, the world has been coping with a zombie plague with a retroviral drug that keeps the infection at bay in those who carry the virus. It’s a clear parable for HIV/AIDS: the first outbreak occurred in the early 80s, the retroviral was first created — from live (undead?) protein harvested from full-blown zombies — in the 1990s, and today being one of the “Returned” is chronic but manageable… as long as an infected gets the medication daily. But fear of and prejudice toward the Returned never really abated,...

As horror fans, we’re used to zombie outbreaks running wildly out of control, causing mass chaos and mounting odds. These types of movies love to showcase rotting flesh, gooey kills, and as many walkers as possible – unless you’re The Returned. Director Manuel Carballo and writer Hatem Khraiche fast forward through all the death and destruction, presenting a glimpse into a zombie movie phase most filmmakers refuse to explore – recovery. So many zombie stories focus on nothing but action, as survivors fight through the apocalypse, but what about after the government takes control again and is able to produce some type of vaccine to help newly turned “almost” zombies? What if people were transformed into zombie time-bombs waiting to turn just by missing one single dose? Welcome to the future.

“Directed by Manuel Carballo, The Returned is set in a post-zombie world where a treatment called the “Return Protein” can stop the spread of the virus if injected quickly after infection, but cannot cure it. With daily injections, the “Returned” are able to live relatively normal lives, but with brutal attacks at the hands of Anti-Return groups and rumors that protein stock is running low, the world is again on the brink of chaos. In the midst of this turmoil are Alex (Kris Holden-Ried) and Kate (Emily Hampshire), a young, successful and enviable couple that are hiding a long held secret – Alex is Returned. Certainly, there is something admirable about director Manuel Carballo's zombie drama "The Returned" when it uses the opening credits sequence to address the conventions of the genre, only to completely move away from them for the rest of the film. But the gamble never quite pays off the way you want it to. A mostly unnecessary flashback sequence—that is never returned to again until it's required to do some third act heavy lifting—gives horror fans what they come to expect from anything zombie related: blood, screaming, guns, more blood and terror as the dead become fearsomely undead. It's a concession to the audience, but a smartly played one even if it's structurally unsound, and it's a crudely efficient setup for what is ultimately a zombie medical drama. As is the current vogue of contemporary films about brain eaters, the modern rise of zombies in "The Returned" occurs...

Let’s step back in time for a moment… back to a time when a strange and deadly new virus emerged in our world. This virus would often go undetected at first, sometimes for years, and then strikes its victims with a devastating ferocity. This virus requires its victims to take daily regiments of very expensive retro-viral drugs and there is still no cure for this unfortunate condition.
Let’s now return to the present day. This virus still exists in the real world, but is manageable. What would happen if we suddenly exhausted the world’s supply of this life-saving drug?
The Returned, written by Hatem Khraiche, could very well be an allegory for this frightening hypothetical scenario. In the film, directed by Manuel Carballo, the virus is one that invokes all the typical symptoms of zombism. Yes. I know that’s not a real word… yet. Much like our real world virus,...

Forget vampires, we're now full into the zombie takeover of the entertainment world. That's not necessarily a bad thing, especially when zombie movies are starting to move away from the survivalist story to a take a more dramatic turn and The Return is a good entry into the later category.
Spanish director Manuel Carballo's English language debut takes place in the modern day but in an alternate reality some three decades after the first zombie outbreak. It's not explained how the first outbreak occurred or where and how it started only that it happened and millions died. Since then, the government has been working to synthesize a vaccine to keep the infected healthy, essentially turning them from single minded, human consuming monsters to regular people living the day to day. They are misunderstood and stigmatized. They live under a cloud of fear and suspicion. They are subject to physical and verbal assaults. They fear that the supply of the drug that keeps them alive will soon run out. They are officially called "the returned," and in Manuel Carballo's film (aka Retornados), they are people who have been infected with a fatal virus but were lucky enough to be treated quickly. The price they must pay is high. They must take a daily drug dose, or the infection will spread throughout their body, transforming them into flesh-eating creatures. No wonder they're known as zombies. The setting is the modern day, but it's really an alternate world, one in which an infection broke out in the 1980s...

Akin to the BBC series In The Flesh, The Returned takes place in a world where the infected can be rehabilitated and reintegrated into society.
Here are more details on the story from ComingSoon:

Welcome to the post-post-apocalypse, where the zombie virus has metastasized from horror-movie gross-out to full-blown sci-fi metaphor.
In Manuel Carballo's assured feature, two major zombie outbreaks have been contained, and the virus has been halted in bitten survivors — the Returned of the title — who must give themselves daily injections of the "return protein" to continue living normal lives.
Kris Holden-Ried and Emily Hampshire play Alex and Kate, a couple who's hiding the fact that Alex has been controlling his infection for years. In the face of anti-Returned prejudice and a growing panic about dwindling medication, the pressure builds on the couple to get black-market meds to ensure Alex's survival while defending themselves from violent bigots. </...

It's certainly no big secret that you can stuff all sorts of interesting social commentary into a zombie story. From George Romero's 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead to the current TV series The Walking Dead, writers have been finding new and frequently clever ways to use the "zombie apocalypse" as a simple-yet-powerful analogy about the flaws, foibles, and shortcomings of normal humanity.
Borrowing a thematic page from films like Children of Men and Blindness (both superior films, but the comparison seems apt), The Returned focuses on the early stages of a "fantastic" yet disturbingly realistic apocalypse -- and it focuses a lot more on the personal stakes of a crumbling world than it does in slam-bang zombie-stompin' horror mayhem. The Returned, for lack of a better phrase, is a "horror drama," and if that sounds like a warning, well, it's not. This is a smart, intense, and frequently tragic horror story.

Someone finally decided to make a zombie movie! It’s about damn time! All kidding aside, director Manuel Carballo’s genre effort “The Returned” doesn’t look half bad. And this is coming from someone who simply refuses to watch most zombie movies these days. I just can’t do it. I draw the line at “The Walking Dead,” and I’m even having trouble making it through season four due to zombie burn out. But, I digress. Manuel Carballo is a solid director, though I wasn’t completely enthralled with his most recent effort “Exorcismus.” Although the flick had style to spare, the story was a little weak for my taste. However, “The Returned” looks pretty good. Horror fans and adventurous viewers can expect the flick to drop in the United States early next year. As always, a synopsis: Kate works at the hospital in the Return Unit, helping...

Synopsis
Kate works at the hospital in the Return Unit, helping those who have been infected by the virus that turns people into zombies. Kate’s dedication to her work is absolute, but few people realize that for her it is also a personal matter; Kate’s own husband, Jason, has been returned.
After various brutal and prolific attacks at the hands of Anti-Return groups and rumors that the “Protein” stock is running dangerously low, Kate fears for Jason's safety. Suspicious of the government's order that all the returned should report to a secure medical facility "for their own safety," the couple decides to flee, taking with them all the doses of “Return Protein” they have.

In the upcoming Tiff selection My Awkward Sexual Adventure, Canadian actress Emily Hampshire plays an exotic dancer who helps a reserved accountant gain sexual experience in order to win back his ex-girlfriend. But the Cosmopolis star will soon take on a very different role in the Filmax feature horror film The Returned.
Directed by Manuel Carballo (Exorcismus), and written by Hatem Khraiche Ruiz-Zorrilla, The Returned is a futuristic zombie movie in which undead victims are temporarily healed thanks to weekly injections of a serum. Hampshire, who just finished shooting All the Wrong Reasons with Kevin Zegers and Cory Monteith, will play a doctor who works with the victims. The film will also star Kris Holden Reid and Shawn Doyle. [Variety]
Production on The Returned will begin sometime this fall.
Does the premise of The Returned sound interesting? Do you think zombie movies are still relevant or have they become stale?...

First up, the studio has announced that director Jordan Barker's Torment and Exorcismus director Manuel Carballo's The Returned are both in the process of casting and will begin shooting this October.
In Torment "Cory Morgan; his wife, Sarah; and their 3-year-old daughter, Emily, decide to spend a quiet family holiday alone. When Sarah starts seeing strange things around the house, it soon becomes clear that they have some unwanted guests… Now the family are forced to fight for their lives in what has become a festival of terror of epic proportions."

In case you have not had your fill of putrid flesh, the zombie madness continues with Manuel Carballo (Exorcismus) and Filmax International's The Returned bringing terror. This film is in early stages and filming will take place in Spain. The story seems to be lost in translation; however, an infection turns some into a zombie-ish state. They require protein treatments, but what happens when the protein shakes run out? Anti-returned protesters, those against the infected, turn riot and soon characters are in jeopardy. Enjoy the first poster for the film here, with the full synopsis available at the Film Int. website.

Director: Manuel Carballo.
Writer: David Muñoz (screenplay).
Cast: Sophie Vavasseur, Stephen Billington and Richard Felix.
Emma Hawkins (Sophie Vavasseur) seems to be the typical everyday teenage girl living outside of London proper. She has her atypical problems and obvious life struggles with her parents. But when audiences have the foreknowledge of knowing where Exorcismus is going, any shock value is going to be rendered moot.
Although there are no scares to be found, the real fright is in seeing how this young lady deal with life lessons and responsibilities she tends to avoid. After she has a row with mom over not being able to go to London for a rock concert, what she does next seems visceral. She cuts her hand to alleviate the anguish.

*Updated with more sales art. I'm kind of shocked Filmax International is working with director Manuel Carballo again after he churned out the turd known as Exorcismus. The Spanish production house responsible for the Rec films and the forthcoming thriller Kidnapped is letting Carballo back behind the camera for The Returned. Penned by Hatem Khraiche and Ruiz-Zorrilla, "Kate works at the hospital in the Return Unit, helping those who have been infected by the virus that turns people into zombies. Kates own husband, Jack, has been returned." If history repeats itself, I wonder what classic zombie film Carballo will lift everything from? More soon.

Debuting on U.S. DVD today from IFC Films and Mpi Media Group, Manuel Carballo’s Exorcismus (a.k.a. The Possession Of Emma Evans) is the latest variation on the time-honored terror trope—with an updated twist. Here, the focus is not on an innocent child but on emotionally troubled teenager Emma, whose conflicts with her parents only get worse when a demonic force infects her. Fango spoke to actress Sophie Vavasseur, who brought Emma and her torment to life on screen.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve never been a huge fan of the demonic possession subgenre. Outside of a few notable exceptions — William Friedkin’s iconic horror opus “The Exorcist” and Scott Derrickson’s “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” being the most accomplished of the bunch — productions that take a traditional approach to the “little girl possessed by otherworldly forces” are typically pretty boring to me. Most dedicated movie-goers have been down these paths before, as few filmmakers are savvy enough to deliver something that’s both creative and unique. What’s the point in making a motion picture if you’re just going to retread familiar territory? Why waste everyone’s time by simply remaking the same old thing over and over again? It just doesn’t make much sense to me. Director Manuel Carballo’s 2010 possession yarn “Exorcismus” dwells directly in the middle of the cinematic road.

IFC Midnight released Manuel Carballo's second film Exorcismus (known in the States as The Possession of Emma Evans) earlier this month; while Benny wasn't such a fan of the film, I was intrigued by Carballo's creative choices in dramatizing the tale of Emma Evans, held captive by a diabolical spirit while her family looks on in horror. Recently, I had the chance to interview the director about his process and common exorcism-movie tropes, including the archetype of the possessed post-adolescent girl. (And we even touch up on Justin Bieber!) Read on.

Stars: Sophie Vavasseur, Stephen Billington, Richard Felix, Jo-Anne Stockham, Doug Bradley | Written by David Munoz | Directed by Manuel Carballo
Exorcismus tells the story of troubled teenager Emma (Vavassuer) who suddenly becomes prone to fits and displays strange and aggressive behaviour. Her family think she merely needs psychiatric help, that is until Emma suddenly levitates in the family kitchen! Realising there maybe more to Emma’s odd behaviour, her parents bring in Christopher, a priest, to exorcise whatever demon is possessing her. But her exorcism is only the beginning…
