Avatar Studios, created to churn our content set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, was welcomed with great fanfare by fans. To think of a studio that would dedicate all its resources towards making Avatar content was a huge win for fans of the franchise. However, fans were curious about what kinds of projects they might see coming out of the studio, leading to tons of rumors about the nature of the shows and films that the studio was making.

One such rumor seemed to be that Avatar: The Last Airbender will be getting a second helping with a fourth season, one that would focus on adapting the Dark Horse Comics run with the IP, which followed Zuko and Azula, where the former served as sort of an Uncle Iroh figure to the former heir apparent to the Phoenix Throne.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most popular cartoons, known for its unique and subversive storytelling packed with plenty of emotions. However, the series lasted only three seasons and 61 episodes, ending its run on Nickelodeon in 2008. Nonetheless, fans have always pondered about what could have been a potential fourth season of the hit show.

Aaron Ehasz, a head writer on the series, has dropped some major bombshells regarding the show’s short lifespan and abandoned plans for a prospective fourth season. Ehasz has claimed that M. Night Shyamalan’s live-action adaptation of the beloved source material was indirectly responsible for the show’s cancellation. "Avatar: The Last Airbender" told a complete and epic story across three seasons and 61 episodes, from 2005 to 2008. Now, it's been confirmed the Netflix-helmed live-action remake of "Avatar" will get to carry this story to the finish line once more.
The 2012-2014 sequel series "The Legend of Korra" showed what happened decades later, but there are other stories following the original Team Avatar after the series' wrap-up. And no, I don't mean the upcoming animated "Avatar" movie, releasing in 2025, that will follow these heroic kids as adults.
Since 2012, Dark Horse Comics has been publishing licensed "The Last Airbender" graphic novels, varying in length from trilogies to 80-page one-shots. The comics were first written by cartoonist Gene Luen Yang and drawn in the style of the animated series by artist duo Gurihiru (the same comic-creating team that went on to make "Superman Smashes The Klan"). Naruto, one of the most popular mangas of all time, is headed to the big screen.
Destin Daniel Cretton, who co-wrote and directed the Marvel Studios movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has been tapped to pen and helm a live-action adaptation of the title for Lionsgate.
Cretton will also produce alongside Jeyun Munford through his company, Hisako. The duo join Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions, who are behind the studio’s upcoming video game adaptation Borderlands, and Jeremy Latcham (Dungeons & Dragons).
Created by Masashi Kishimoto, Naruto was a coming-of-age story focused on a young and enthusiastic ninja named Naruto Uzumaki who wants to grow up to be the leader of his ninja village but also happens to have the spirit of a nine-tailed demon fox inside him. The story was serialized in Japan’s popular Weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 to 2014, tracking the character’s coming-of-age,...

The new Karate Kid has been found.
Sony Pictures has cast Ben Wang, best known as the star of Disney+ series American Born Chinese, to star in its latest installment of the coming-of-age martial arts franchise.
The casting comes after a global search that saw thousands of submissions from around the world, with 10,000 entries reported in the first 24 hours alone. According to studio insiders, Wang delivered a standout audition that demonstrated his deep connection to the character. It also helped that he is fluent in Mandarin and highly skilled across many forms of martial arts, including karate, wing chun/kung fu, gumdo, kempo and taekwondo. Some of those skills were already showcased on American Born Chinese, the well-regarded adaptation of the acclaimed coming-of-age fantasy graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang that also starred Michelle Yeoh.
The new Karate Kid will have Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio reprising their iconic characters from previous Karate Kid films.

Few fictional characters mean as much to so many as Superman. While some dorks may call the nearly invincible superhero "boring" because of his vast array of abilities and Boy Scout attitude, that's missing the point. Profoundly. Superman is an incredible character not because he's faster than a speeding bullet and more powerful than a locomotive but because he has infinite power and makes the choice to use his powers to help the downtrodden and uplift the world around him. When given the powers of a god, Clark Kent doesn't seek self-aggrandizement or pursue selfish ends -- he works to make the world a better place. Selflessly. He's the beacon for what we, what humanity, can strive for.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Disney+ announced today that it will not move forward with a second season of the action-fantasy series American Born Chinese. The decision to cancel the series comes seven months after Disney debuted the eight-episode series on its streaming service, Disney+. The cancelation is raising a red flag for fans of the series, as Disney tends to purge content from Disney+ to save money and digital real estate. We’ve seen the mouse-eared streamer purge content before, with shows like Willow, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and more. According to Deadline, options on the cast expired yesterday. However, there could be a silver lining to this disappointing news. 20th Television still plans to shop the series to other outlets, giving the show a chance to live again through another platform.

Disney+ is not proceeding with a second season of Disney Branded Television/20th Television’s action fantasy series American Born Chinese, which stars Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh.

Unfortunately I am having some trouble with this story, which is a shame because I really love the character. I think a big part that is working against it, especially from my own point of view is the retroactive angle to the story. Without repeating myself from last month, in a nutshell, a lack of consequences detracts from delivering a good story. There has been a spate of retroactive storytelling from Marvel in the last few years, some has worked and some hasn’t. I think a lot of it can come down to the popularity and back catalogue of any given character to decide the levels of success a retroactive story can have. Even though I said I love the character I have to admit my knowledge of her early comics are sketchy at best.

The ‘Coming Soon to TV’ shelf in your local bookshop will be sagging under the weight of this lot – the thrillers, sci-fi stories, crime novels and non-fiction currently being adapted for television. If you prefer to read ahead before your imagination is sullied by the small screen version, then here’s where to start, from Apple TV+’s adaptation of 1950s-set revenge comedy Lessons in Chemistry and psychological thriller The Crowded Room, to Prime Video’s new Neil Gaiman show Anansi Boys and rumoured Kay Scarpetta series, via Netflix’s true-life opioid drama Painkiller, Itvx/MGM+ historical adventure series The Winter King and many more. Many many more.
It’s too soon to say when we’ll see those planned adaptations below which are yet to film, given the current WGA Writers’ Strike and earth-shifts taking place among the streaming networks whose pile ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap model is proving unsustainable,...

Daniel Fienberg: It’s hard to tell the story of Spring TV in 2023 without discussing HBO’s Succession and Barry, as well as Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso. Those three shows, two definitely finished and one seemingly coming to an end, represented four of the last six Emmy wins for outstanding drama and comedy series, as well as many nominations for acting, writing and directing. With their shocking deaths, wild deviations in tone and, in the case of Ted Lasso, expanded episode running times, they’ve dominated social media and water cooler conversations since March.
That’s why we’re not going to focus on them here. There’s more to TV than Barry, Succession and Ted Lasso — or at least HBO and Apple hope there is after the upcoming awards season concludes.
Even not counting the holy trinity of the spring, there were buzzy returning shows — Fxx’s Dave!

Disney+ has mined the world of superheroes quite well with their various series forays into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chinese folklore gets a Disney spin in “American Born Chinese,” an eight-episode series created by Kelvin Yu, which landed on Disney+ on Wednesday. An adaptation of the 2006 graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, the series centers on Bay Area teenager Jin Wang (Ben Wang), who becomes entangled in a fantastical quest after a new classmate, Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), reveals himself to be the son of the Monkey King and recruits Jin to help him search for the Fourth Scroll.

American Born Chinese has arrived on Disney+ and with it comes the introduction of Best Actress Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh‘s portrayal of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy. Adapted from Gene Luen Yang‘s graphic novel, Yeoh’s character is derived from traditional Chinese stories and mythology, but there’s a twist on her when it comes to this action-packed series. Centering on the coming-of-age story of Jin (Ben Wang), American Born Chinese sees his life disrupted when conflict among the Gods is brought to Earth. It’s hard to pin down the identity of “American Born Chinese,” the new live action adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s acclaimed graphic novel of the same name from creator Kelvin Yu. Is it a fantasy epic of warring ancient gods? A modern-day high school romp about a second generation Chinese American teenager trying desperately to fit in? A tender examination of multigenerational trauma and the scars that can unwittingly be passed on from parents to children?
The answer is all of the above and, as you may expect, it comes with mixed results. At its best, “American Born Chinese” is a delightful and refreshing exploration of diasporic identity, a thrilling martial arts fantasy and a heartwarming tale of family and friendship. However, the series’ disparate storytelling styles don’t often blend as seamlessly as we might like, making the whole show just a bit less effective than the sum of its parts.

A popular reading of superhero mania holds that it’s our era’s substitute for shared mythology; instead of Zeus shooting lightning bolts from Mount Olympus, we have Cyclops shooting beams from his eyeballs. So it’s fitting that the coming-of-age tale “American Born Chinese” streams on Disney+, the service that’s a one-stop shop for all things Marvel; Destin Daniel Cretton of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” the first Marvel film to star an Asian American hero, even directs the pilot. But “American Born Chinese” flips the script: rather than use superheroes for modern-day mythmaking, it infuses centuries-old myths into genres now dominated by superheroes.

When Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel American Born Chinese came out in 2006, it was a gamechanger. Yang has built his career on Asian-inclusive comics and American Born Chinese has been his most influential to date. It earned several comic book awards when it came out, and is still taught in schools today, complete with a study guide in Gale’s acclaimed Novels for Students series.
The slang “American born Chinese” is commonly reduced to the acronym “ABC” within Chinese communities. When used by certain Chinese, it can be slightly derogatory, implying that the ABC has lost the connection to Chinese culture. Yang’s graphic novel grapples with Amerasian issues in a coming-of-age story that has now been adapted into an eight-episode series for Disney+. While there are distinct references to the Asian American experience, the story embraces outsider themes that anyone can relate to.

For some, “American Born Chinese” is a derogatory reference to Chinese Americans who were born in the U.S. It’s a term used to connote hierarchy in Chinese immigrant households and dismiss the connection that first or second generation children have to their Chinese roots and culture. But in the new Disney+ series American Born Chinese, based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel of the same name, the term takes on a different meaning. For teenage protagonist Jin Wang (Ben Wang), it suggests that, despite his being born in the United States, his peers will always see him as “other.” No matter how hard he tries to assimilate, to be American, he’ll always be seen as Chinese.

When Everything Everywhere All At Once burst into the multiverse, it rocked our cinematic world like never before. Not only did Michelle Yeoh become the first Asian woman to win Best Actress at the Academy Awards, Eeaao captured six other Oscars including Best Picture, and both Best Supporting Actor and Actress. Beyond that, Eeaao collectively earned over 300 honors and nominations from film festivals all over the world.
Hot on heels of the Eeaao victory lap, Disney+ announced the debut of American Born Chinese, a miniseries based on a celebrated graphic novel created by Gene Luen Yang in 2006. Yang is an executive producer of this television adaptation. His original graphic novel won tons of accolades including the 2007 Eisner Award and Best Comic of the Year from Publishers Weekly, Time, Amazon, and others. A pioneering exploration of the Asian American experience, American Born Chinese is even used as a teaching aid in schools to this day.

The end of May traditionally also means that fall TV shows are gearing up to end their season finales. But that tradition hails from a time when TV seasons were nearly 30 episodes in length, and spanned from their premieres in early September all the way through late spring.
Streaming has changed essentially everything about that schedule. Although new TV shows are still traditionally released in the fall, streaming has no set calendar, and new titles release whenever studio executives see a lull in their calendar. Coincidentally, there are a couple of big-name streaming shows that will air their season (and series) finales this week, even though their premiere episodes aired not last September, but earlier this spring. Check them out below, along with all the other fantastic titles coming to streaming this week!

The journey for Jin Wang in “American Born Chinese” couldn’t have begun at a more opportune time. The protagonist of Gene Luen Yang’s 2006 graphic novel — now a Disney’s eight-episode series from showrunner Kelvin Yu — springs forth when narratives with an Asian identity are stratospheric-high in demand and popularity. Even with the silhouette of a high schooler that folks might take for granted, Jin is living in a world where he is outlined with the community’s glow, one generated by the golden reception for “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Furie,” “Ms.

In recent years, films and television shows have been tasked with the mission of depicting under-represented groups on screen while passing a simple litmus test: Who is this for? For American Born Chinese, it’s immediately apparent that the answer is everyone. The show’s characters speak Mandarin about 30 percent of the time, and signs of Asian-Americana are littered throughout. Yet despite its cultural specificities, this adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s 2006 graphic novel of the same name is an obvious play for Disney’s general audience, what with its comic storyline mixed with fantasy and martial arts.
The series begins with Jin Wang (Ben Wang), a teen struggling to find his social footing, being tasked with showing Chinese transfer student Wei-chen (Jim Liu) around school. A culture clash ensues as Wei-chen, due to his accent and awkwardness, thwarts Jin’s burgeoning popularity. Jin is initially horrified by Wei-chen’s...

Actor Ke Huy Quan says portraying an American born Chinese in the upcoming series of the same name “scared the hell” out of him.
Hollywood has had considerable feats of Asian representation this year ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’s’ historic Oscar wins ‘Beef’ and on May 24, ‘American Born Chinese’.
Huy Quan was hesitant about joining the series’ Asian-led ensemble, reports ‘Variety’.
“I remember when I first heard about this character when I was offered the role, it scared the hell out of me. In fact, I actually passed on it because I told our creative team that this is the type of portrayal that we do not want to see in 2023,” Quan said during a post-screening Q&a at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night.

At a White House event on Monday, President Joe Biden expressed support for Hollywood writers in their ongoing strike, saying in part that he hopes they receive “a fair deal they deserve as soon as possible.”
Biden’s comments came after a special screening of the upcoming Disney+ series “American Born Chinese,” held to honor Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
“Nights like these are a reminder of stories and the importance of treating storytellers with the dignity, respect and the value they deserve. I sincerely hope the writers’ strike in Hollywood gets resolved and the writers are given a fair deal they deserve as soon as possible,” Biden said.
“This is an iconic, meaningful American industry. And we need the writers and all the workers and everyone involved to tell the stories of our nation and the stories of all of us,” Potus added.

Hollywood has had considerable feats of Asian representation this year: “Everything Everywhere All at Once’s” historic Oscar wins, Netflix’s “Beef” and, on May 24, “American Born Chinese.”
However, despite the nuanced portrayal of the Asian American identity within the phantasmagorical world of Chinese mythology, Ke Huy Quan was hesitant about joining the series’ Asian-led ensemble.

What does it mean to be a hero? In a Disney show or movie, it usually means superpowers or suits or several rings — the external vectors for an inner chivalry that was there all along. It’s the kind of heroism that pops up across Marvel, Star Wars, and numerous other Disney features and series, and which fuels Kelvin Yu’s “American Born Chinese,” based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang.
The series opens with a daunting title card detailing the celestial war afoot: The bull demon (Leonard Wu) wants to destabilize the jade emperor, but the monkey king (Daniel Wu) defends the throne with his magical staff staff jingo bang — which has gone missing. The monkey king pursues the thief in the heavenly realm during the first scene, packed with the lush visuals and deft action that Cretton deployed in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The beach has always appealed to Kelvin Yu. Having grown up in Palos Verdes before eventually settling in Santa Monica with his wife and two young children, he’s rarely lived far from it. This proximity has allowed him to become a deft surfer, though he’s too modest to call himself one. “I’m not incredibly proficient, but I have been doing it for about 30 years,” says Yu, 43, who often starts his days on the water. “It’s just a meditative exercise in multitasking where I can get a little quiet time.”
Yu’s professional multitasking is less solitary. He serves as an executive producer on Fox’s long-running animated series Bob’s Burgers, still takes for-hire onscreen roles (Master of None, Wonder Woman 1984 and The Afterparty) and recently completed a labor of love by showrunning an adaptation of cult graphic novel American Born Chinese.
