From author Benjamin Percy and artist Francesco Francavilla, the supernatural illustrated novella Wereworld is now available from NeoText, and we have an exclusive excerpt just for Daily Dead readers!
"Acclaimed author Ben Percy and superstar artist Francesco Francavilla have collaborated on Wereworld, a new illustrated novella about a year of increasing terror in a small Minnesota town. The supernatural novella will be published by digital publisher NeoText this fall.
What if The Purge were supernatural? What if, instead of one night a year, the world went wild once a month? When the moon was full? What if the contagion was spreading among the population—and no one knew who was infected—only that the violence was growing more severe and widespread? You couldn’t trust anyone—not your neighbors, your friends, or even your family.
Manitou Street—in the cozy college town of Northfield, Minnesota—has always been known for...

Marvel Comics' "Wolverine" #3, available July 22, 2020, is written by Ben Percy and illustrated by Adam Kubert, Gerardo Zaffino, with covers by Greg Hildebrandt, Adam Kubert and Tom Raney:
"...the 'Flower Cartel' and the 'Pale Girl' seem to be one step ahead of 'Wolverine', but he has a plan. It's a risky gamble that will take him into the heart of a larger criminal conspiracy even as it puts many 'mutie' lives at risk..."

Greg Hildebrandt riff on a Nightmare Alley posterThe urge to remake is an arguable scourge on cinema but much of what there is to argue about is who is doing the remaking and why. Oftentime the motivations are corporate cynical "cash grab for lazy audiences who will only look at new things... especially if they sound famliar". When true auteurs go there, though, especially with films that aren't enormously famous, there's more room for debate about intention and possibility and aesthetic necessity. The best possible outcome is that we get two very different equally strong films and the "new" model stirs up more interest and appreciation for the Og.
We hope that will be the case when Guillermo Del Toro finishes Nightmare Alley in... 2021? (Production was halted due to Covid-19). The original Nightmare Alley (1947), is a beautifully shot circus noir that's ripe for both rediscovery and reinterpretation.

Star Wars prequels vs. sequels, how to work while traveling, the pushmi-pullyu, plus more in today's Link Tank!
Are the Star Wars prequels better than the sequels? Our friend over at The Mary Sue seems to think so.
"The verdict on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is in, and like the trilogy itself, the reactions have been mixed and all over the place. Critics rated the first two movies of the sequel trilogy highly, but many were less impressed by The Rise of Skywalker. Viewers’ mileage may vary, of course, with many finding it a satisfying end to the trilogy and its characters. Surprisingly, viewers’ ratings for the sequels are overall far higher than those that were given to the prequels, at least on Rotten Tomatoes, but that sentiment deserves a second look."

Idw Publishing is launching a comic book series that will tell the story of the end of Kirk's original five-year mission.
The original Star Trek TV series followed Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise on a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no man has gone before. Unfortunately, the show was canceled after three seasons, which means we never got a proper look at how that mission ended.
Now, we will.
According to THR, Idw Publishing is launching a comic book series called Star Trek: Year Five, which will explore the end of Kirk and company's first five-year mission. The series will explore the crew's feelings about the end of their mission and their return to Earth.
