At long last, Kathryn Bigelow is returning to filmmaking. After 2017’s Detroit, she was developing the David Koepp-scripted thriller Aurora for Netflix but has now moved on to another project for the company. The untitled thriller will unfold in real-time at the White House as a missile attack threatens the United States. THR reports former NBC News president Noah Oppenheim, who also wrote Jackie, scripted the project based on Bigelow’s idea. No additional details were revealed but with Netflix now greenlighting the project, here’s hoping it kicks off before the end of the year.

Project comes from Land Of Mine’s producer and writer duo.
Danish director Asger Leth (Man On A Ledge) will direct the timely, politically-minded Us-set drama White Dog, from a story by Land Of Mine writer/director Martin Zandvliet.
Nordisk’s Mikael Rieks, who also produced the likely Oscar-contender Land Of Mine, will produce. Zandvliet co-wrote the script with Anders August.
The film is described as “an eye-level portrait of two skinhead brothers at a point in their lives where their paths are pointed in very different directions.”
The team expects to shoot the film in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
“The film will take place in Pittsburgh, USA, but it is just as easily a portrait of a time where populist politicians everywhere are appealing to the worst in us,” said Asger Leth, whose credits also include Ghosts Of Cite Soleil.
Meanwhile, Zandvliet is currently in pre-production in Japan on his English-language debut The Outsider starring Jared Leto.

Exclusive: Rob Minkoff, Yair Landau produce family animation.
Gfm has boarded sales on family animation Blazing Samurai, which is being produced by former vice chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Yair Landau (Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs) and The Lion King director Rob Minkoff.
Ed Stone and Nate Hopper’s script, partly inspired by Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, tells the story of Hank, a scrappy, wide-eyed pooch that dreams of becoming a Samurai. In order to fulfil his dream, he travels to a small town in the middle of ancient Japan, which turns out to be inhabited exclusively by cats.
Although beset by prejudice, Hank perseveres, befriends a once great Samurai cat and fastest blade in the East, Jimbo, and learns not only how to be a great warrior, but how to be an even better dog.
Landau said: “Blazing Samurai is a broadly appealing family film that marries a classic western narrative with brilliant Japanese visuals...

Move On is a road movie like no other – directed by award-winning director Asger Leth, and starring Mads Mikkelsen, it was designed to integrate consumer participation into the creative process of filmmaking at such a grand scale. From pre-production through to the film’s completion, audiences have had the opportunity to influence elements of the film including location, character’s names or the music they listen to, along with a chance to play an actual role in the film itself.
The film follows one man’s mission to stay one step ahead of the rest of the world whilst he’s on the move, and you can watch it below…

There’s been a slow, fascinating inclination toward crowd-sourced art in the past few months; it’s only slow enough for little to actually notice. But it is happening. For one thing, Mads Mikkelsen and Asger Leth are filming their own audience-based project, Move On — this allows denizens of the film’s various European locales to help shape the plot and supporting characters — while Edgar Wright recently completed a web series, The Random Adventures of Brandon Generator, which followed similar guidelines. I know such a different approach to storytelling will have its skeptics, but if the latter proved to be a fun and unique experience — that also wasn’t at the sake of the filmmaker’s wit — why not see where else it could go?
Thus, I report (without much hesitation) that Drake Doremus (Like Crazy) is directing an experiment in casting, The Beauty Inside, which initially features Topher Grace and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

If anyone was speculating who or what Mads Mikkelsen might have been playing in ‘Thor 2′, well, you can stop right now with news coming that Mikkelsen has been forced to depart the Marvel sequel due those pesky scheduling conflicts with NBC’s ‘Hannibal’. Mikkelsen was supposed to be playing the villain in the Marvel sequel but now it looks as if that is not going to happen as the actor told Zoomin Movies:
“Yeah, that’s not happening now unfortunately. I had a meeting with them, but they were a little too late. And then ‘Hannibal’ came in, and everything just came in the same period, so now it’s not happening”.
Mikkelsen’s departure marks the second casualty of a high profile Marvel flick with news coming earlier this week that director David Slade was forced to drop out of the long gestating ‘Daredevil’ reboot due to his...

First claiming David Slade from his directing duties on "Daredevil," it looks like NBC's "Hannibal" has forced another big talent out of a high-profile superhero movie. First reported at the end of May as being in talks for the villain role in "Thor 2," it looks like things haven't worked out for Mads Mikkelsen to appear in Marvel's sequel. "Yeah, that's not happening unfortunately. I had a meeting with them, but they were a little too late. And then 'Hannibal' came in, and everything just came in the same period, so now it's not happening," the actor recently told Zoomin Movies. As you might recall, the actor is slated to play Hannibal Lecter in the upcoming series, with news of his casting coming just days after the "Thor 2" story broke. Currently shooting the road movie "Move On" for director Asger Leth ("Man On A Ledge"), the actor...

Chicago – “Man on a Ledge” wants to be “Dog Day Afternoon” for the ’10s recession (it’s not coincidental that a man screams “Attica!” at one point). A tale of a man screwed by a corrupt system who stages a complex heist and galvanizes the people of New York in the process could have worked so well. There are great actors and great ideas here. And there’s also the most convoluted, ridiculous, and poorly written script that I’ve suffered through in a very long time.
Rating: 1.5/5.0
“Man on a Ledge” starts promisingly enough. A cop (Sam Worthington) looking at 25 years behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit rents a room on the 21st floor, opens the window, and steps out on to the ledge. He asks for a specific officer (Elizabeth Banks) to take his case and the film quickly reveals that the suicidal intent is merely a ruse.

Once upon a time, in the days before The Simpsons, adults and children alike were enchanted by the surprisingly satirical antics of The Muppets on both the small and big screen. Combining splendidly simple puppetry with razor-sharp wit and instantly hummable tunes, the Muppets' programmes and movies formed an instant connection with the mischievous anarchist that lurks within. Yet, like all good things, the magic came to an end – until, that is, co-writer and star Jason Segel made it his mission to breathe new life into Jim Henson's finest creations.

After the disastrous Man on a Ledge came and went a few months back, ScreenDaily reports that director Asger Leth is going back to his native country of Denmark for what sounds like an entirely unique endeavor — all while opting to work with a national treasure. For his third film, Leth will direct Mads Mikkelsen in Move On, a road story that uses a screenplay by Matt Greenhalgh (Control) as the jumping-off point for an experience crafted with the assistance of audiences across eleven countries (Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, the Netherlands and, Slovakia.)
The basic outline sounds familiar to any one of us — a mysterious man, one the director hopes can be “an iconic character,” must transport a briefcase across Europe — but members of the aforementioned countries, with enough interest and effort, can lend their assistance by choosing music, props, clothing, locations, character names,...

Versatile Danish thesp Mads Mikkelsen is set to team with "Man On A Ledge" helmer Asger Leth for road film "Move On." Developed by Matt Greenhalgh (screenwriter of "Control" and "Nowhere Boy"), the story begins with a flawed hero, stepping off a boat in Rotterdam before traveling across Europe to deliver a mysterious silver suitcase. Lensing will take the production across eight different countries in a hectic 30-day chronological shoot, and will unusually involve the participation of film fans from 11 countries in areas such as casting, location and props. More details can be found at the film's website, but each country's shoot will make up a 5-8 minute segment of the movie, with a shoot commencing this summer before a September unveiling. Chronicle (12A)
(Josh Trank, 2012, Us) Dane DeHaan, Michael B Jordan, Alex Russell, Michael Kelly. 83 mins
It's one of those forehead-slapping, "why didn't We think of this?" ideas: a low-budget, found-footage teen superhero movie. Think Paranormal Activity meets Misfits, or Kick-Ass meets Jackass, as three ordinary boys acquire powers but not the responsibility that comes with them. They start off with mischievous pranks, then progress to … well, part of the fun is that this is a movie out of nowhere. Pick holes in it later, but first enjoy the surprise!
Carnage (15)
(Roman Polanski, 2011, Fra/Ger/Pol/Spa) Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz, John C Reilly. 80 mins
Four actors, two couples, one apartment, and the stage is set for a face-off that goes from sober, civilised and trivial to the exact opposite in no time. Adapted from a play, it's still pretty theatrical, but as chamber pieces go, sporadically sharp and funny.

★★★☆☆ Starring Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell and Kyra Sedgwick, Asger Leth's Man on a Ledge (2012) is a thriller with a twist. High above Manhattan's mid morning traffic, Nick Cassidy (Worthington) is a man on the edge - literally, as he is about to throw himself from a 200ft ledge to the street below. However, as police negotiator Lydia Mercer (Banks) arrives to try and coax him from the brink, it emerges that all is not as it seems, and something even bigger is going down behind the scenes.

Man on a Ledge’s director, Asger Leth, has few other credits to his name; the only other of note being his assistant director and co-writing role on The Five Obstructions, Lars von Trier’s experimental documentary in which he challenged the filmmaker Jørgen Leth (Asger’s father) to remake his 1967 film, The Perfect Human in five different ways. What then, could we expect from Man on a Ledge? Surprisingly, it’s fairly slick and mainstream American thriller.
The plot is relatively simple – a man stands on a ledge of a building in New York, but rather than being suicidal, he is distracting attention from the diamond heist his co-conspirators are undertaking in the opposite building. Of course, there’s...

After seeing Man on a Ledge I actually felt like jumping off of a building. The film stars Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, Genesis Rodriguez, Anthony Mackie, Edward Burns, Ed Harris, and Kyra Sedgwick. Part heist movie, part mystery, with way too much going on, this movie will leave you unimpressed with everyone involved.
First-time director Asger Leth helmed the thriller based on a dreadful script by Pablo F. Fenjves. The story follows ex-cop Nick Cassidy (Worthington), who is framed for stealing David Englander's (Harris) diamond - a crime he supposedly did not commit. Cassidy is sentenced to jail and forced to escape. To prove his innocence, he steps out onto a Manhattan hotel ledge and threatens to jump to his death in order to gain attention for his case. While all eyes are on the man on a ledge, his brother and his girlfriend are hard at work...

Debbie Reynolds, Katherine Heigl, One for the Money Forget Tuesday's Oscar nominations announcement: Liam Neeson's action vehicle The Grey, which will likely be totally ignored when the Oscar 2013 nominations are announced, will easily top the North American box office this weekend. After taking in an estimated (and better than expected) $6.2 million on Friday (as per Deadline.com), the Joe Carnaham-directed The Grey should reach anywhere between $17-20 million for the weekend. Also in the cast: Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo, and Dallas Roberts. The no. 2 spot will likely belong to the Julie Anne Robinson-directed Katherine Heigl comedy One for the Money, which has been overperforming possibly thanks to discount tickets offered by distributor Lionsgate. One for the Money earned an estimated $4.5 million on Friday, and may reach $12.5 million by Sunday evening. However, because of the discounted prices, Lionsgate will see its percentage of the box office (perhaps radically) reduced.

“You know, Mikey, one day you’re going to stick your dick in the wrong door, and somebody’s going to slam it,” and that line represents Man on a Ledge in a nutshell. Goofy and laughable, but overall kind of charming. Director Asger Leth, with the assistance of commercial honcho mega producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, has made a through and through B movie. What you’d expect from a movie called Man on a Ledge, you get. It’s all fairly preposterous and thin, and Leth knows not to let it go on too long before its cheesy charms lose steam. The plot, well, you already know it. Anyone who’s seen that trailer has seen it all. For those of you who live under a rock though, Ledge follows Nick Cassidy, played compellingly enough by Sam Worthington and a dodgy accent. Cassidy wants to prove his innocence over a stolen diamond, so...

Man on a Ledge, the new film directed by Asger Leth, never hits the depths of dullness its name implies. It doesn't exactly rev the engines from frame one, either. Hand-holding at times, drab for a majority of its running time, and not the most memorable of heist thrillers, it sits on that ledge for a large portion, daring to take the leap. Luckily, it finally does and ends up being above average for this brand of casual, movie-going experience. They could have chosen a much more interesting title, though. Continued below! The man on that ledge is Nick Cassidy, played by Sam Worthington, an escaped prisoner who checks into a hotel in downtown New York City one day and climbs out onto the ledge. He threatens to jump, and, as the police, along with Officer Mercer, a psychologist played by Elizabeth Banks who attempts to talk the man down,...

Chicago – New York City. Mid-day. A man steps outside the window on the edge of the Roosevelt Hotel. Is he jumping? That’s the question that street level onlookers and moviegoers want answered from Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell and Ed Harris in “Man on a Ledge”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
This trifle of an action film does have some mojo going for it. It’s played a bit tongue-in-cheek, with the wry Banks filling the role as the hard-drinking New York Police suicide negotiator. The tension in this film is wholly exaggerated, to a point where it teeters on the brink of parody. All the ensemble cast has their game faces on, however, as the somewhat overly complex plot unravels.
Sam Worthington is Nick Cassidy, introduced as a cop-turned-thief doing hard time at Sing-Sing. His brother Joey (Jamie Bell) is embarrassed that Nick has sullied the family name, but does manage...

In the opening minutes of Asger Leth’s Man on a Ledge, Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) checks into the Roosevelt Hotel, climbs out his window, and stands on the ledge outside. A few pedestrians spot him and soon the TV cameras arrive, but all anyone knows at first is there is a man on a ledge.
It’s more complex than that, but it’s a simple concept for a movie. One that immediately brings to mind other confined thrillers like Phone Booth, Panic Room, or recently, the under-appreciated Buried. The key is to allow the audience to put themselves in the fixed character’s shoes, in this case Nick’s at the edge of a 200-foot drop, while keeping the escalating environment around him anything but static. But Leth and writer Pablo Fenjves miss the mark on both sides of the window, and the film feels as flat and generic as the title.

Man on a Ledge is one of those films where the reaction you have toward it will be based upon the mood you're in going into it. On the one hand, you've got a cliché-ridden mess that at times seems like it took pages out of a screenwriting textbook and put them up in a theatrically released movie. On the other hand, you've got a cool, tense and more importantly fun heist flick starring some good actors.
What's funny about Man on a Ledge is that the first two acts of the film are the type of cliché-ridden piles filled with plot holes the size of the Grand Canyon that might make your head explode, but the third act is good enough and original enough to save the movie in the end. It's an impressive debut from director Asger Leth, and he has proven he can get a lot of out of a sizable cast.

Man on a Ledge
Directed by: Asger Leth
Cast: Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris, Anthony Mackie
Running Time: 1 hr 42 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: January 27, 2012
Plot: An ex-cop (Worthington) threatens to jump from a Manhattan hotel, while trying to get revenge on the man who sent him to prison.
Who’S It For? Does the slightest fear of heights make you giggle with nervous excitement? If not, you’re looking at an average thriller with a good gimmick.
Expectations: I knew very little about this flick. Like the title said, I figured there would be a man … and he would be on a ledge. It was an early screening and the first 2012 film I saw.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Sam Worthington as Nick Cassidy: My favorite Worthington performance is as David in The Debt. Let me clarify that a little, it’s really the only one I have appreciated.

I laughed when a friend recently asked me, "What's that movie where the guy is on the ledge?" I looked at him a bit cross-eyed and said, "You mean Man on a Ledge?" Fortunately, had he wanted to see the film, I don't think he would have had a problem buying tickets for the right one, but I wouldn't ever suggest he pay full price for it. After all, just watch the trailer, all that's missing are a few stunts, a cliched rooftop moment and the end credits. Is any of that really worth the price of admission? To answer my own question, no, it's not.
In case you were even more confused than my friend, Man on a Ledge is about a man on a ledge. That man is Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington), an ex-cop and now escaped fugitive. What did Nick do that landed him in prison? Well,...

Man On A Ledge is a film that will be revered in Screenwriting I classes all across this great nation. Like a beacon of hope, this “action thriller” will embolden film students to shrug off their professor’s instance on featuring characters instead of caricatures, avoiding deliberately on the nose dialogue and setting up credible conflicts with a true sense of risk involved. This film goes to great lengths to show that none of these issues seem to get in the way of turning your amateur script into a big-budget Hollywood flick. Congratulations on the ignominy, screenwriter Pablo F. Fenjves!
The film is less of a standalone piece and more of a composite of other, far better genre films, all melded together like money-making stew. A dash of The Fugitive, a heaping helping of Inside Job and just the right amount Dog Day Afternoon (with requisite “Attica!!” homage), then add...

If your impressions about the new action thriller "Man on a Ledge" are based on the film's very-literal title, you're very likely correct in assuming to know a decent amount about the film before entering the theater. "Ledge" is the story of ex-cop and fugitive Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington), whose seemingly obvious suicidal plan to jump off a building is slowly revealed to be something much more.
Thus far, the critical reception for the film is very different from initial audience reactions. The Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer has "Ledge" at a 22 percent fresh rating from critics, versus a 65 percent fresh audience rating.

It's not difficult to see why James Cameron had Sam Worthington lead his 2009 film "Avatar"; after all, the Australian-born star looks like a real-life John Smith (barrel-chested and handsome, but not pretty), something that came in handy since Cameron's film was basically Pocahontas in space. Yet, at the time, the King of the World's choice was slightly risky: who was Sam Worthington? Three years and billions of dollars in worldwide grosses later, the answer is a bit more clear: Worthington has become the consummate action hero -- whether playing a Mossad agent in "The Debt" or a part of Greek mythology in "Clash of the Titans." His most recent role is in the Asger Leth ("Ghosts of Cité Soleil") directed "Man on a Ledge." Here, Worthington plays the titular edge-dweller, Nick Cassidy, an ex-cop who hopes to clear his name through the somewhat unorthodox method of an attempted suicide, while...

Try this on for size: an ex-cop who wants to prove he was innocent of a crime that sent him “up the river” for 25 years decides that the best way to do so is to step out onto the ledge of a midtown Manhattan hotel—and create a distraction for an even wilder scheme he’s trying to cover up. As it happens, the leading actors play their parts with conviction, and director Asger Leth orchestrates the action and visual effects with considerable skill. My problem with Man on a Ledge is that once I understood the real storyline—the one hidden behind the flashy premise—I became impatient to see it resolved. The film isn’t long, but I lost interest just...

I suppose we should include Man On A Ledge on a short list of film titles that succinctly state the plot of a movie, as in Snakes On A Plane. Ah, but like that Jackson thriller, there’s a big, back story to support that title. Snakes don’t just hop aboard flights. And fellsa don’t just go out the window of a high-rise without a reason. These films would also be modern-day “B” films ( the second, lower-budgeted half of double feature bills in Hollywood’s Golden Age ). But to be more precise I would second Entertainment Weekly’s term ” January B movie “. Not quite up to the A-list Summer or Christmas-time blockbusters or prestige films. Now many of the cast have been in the recent spectacles and box office hits, so this also harkens back to the multi-star epics ( best known by the disaster flicks of the 70′s...

A perfectly fine, perfectly average thriller, Man on a Ledge holds no surprises, except how easy it is to guess what's going to happen next. The pleasure, such as it is, is all in the performances, so if you're a hard-core fan of Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Ed Harris, Jamie Bell, Anthony Mackie, Edward Burns, Genesis Rodriguez, William Sadler, and/or Kyra Sedgwick, you're in luck. The film, directed by Asger Leth (Ghosts of Cité Soleil), establishes early on that it's not terribly interested in realism, and almost immediately drops broad hints that all is not as it seems. With a casual, jocular tone set, the effectiveness of certain scenes later in the story, which are evidently intended to be dead serious, are undermined, ensuring...

Now what can we do with this? Best guess is that this discussion went on all the way through shooting, because after taking in the 102 minutes, the only thing creative and truly engaging is in fact, the man on the ledge. Sam Worthington makes the most of his predominantly statuesque role. The guy is standing on a twenty-to-thirty story ledge of a plush hotel in New York City. Sam Worthington presides over a daring robbery from the top of a Manhattan hotel in Man On A Ledge. Here’s Ryan’s review of a disappointing thriller…
It’s probably a bad sign when, about ten minutes into watching something, you begin thinking about other films that are similar yet much, much better. During Man On A Ledge, I found myself my mind wandering off to Dog Day Afternoon, Sidney Lumet’s vaguely similar yet infinitely superior thriller.
Man On A Ledge at least begins with a sense of rhythm and attention to detail. A well-to-do businessman (Sam Worthington) marches confidently into the reception of a posh New York hotel, books out room 2105 – which boasts a particularly fetching view of the island - orders lobster for his final meal, and steps out of the window onto the ledge. It’s only here that director Asger Leth hints that there...
