Luxbox pickup “Martinez,” starring Chile’s Francisco Reyes, best known for his indelible performance in Sebastian Lelio’s Oscar-winning “A Fantastic Woman,” is debuting its trailer and poster ahead of its world premiere at the 40th Miami Film Festival.
Written and directed by upcoming Mexican director Lorena Padilla, the dark comedy follows the titular Martinez, a cantankerous, lonely bureaucrat whose humdrum life is upended by two changes: a pending retirement that is driven home when the guy sent to replace him starts working alongside him; and, secondly, when a neighbor, a woman about his age, is found dead in her home only after several months have passed. As he sifts through her belongings and finds out more about this woman he never knew, he finds himself changing for the better and enjoying life once more.

A writer for Rodrigo Reyes’ 499, Mexican filmmaker Lorena Padilla has workshopped her directorial debut Berlinale Talents, Torino Film Labs and got some Guadalajara Film Festival prize money (five total) in post prod for a project that went into production in early ’22. Featuring Francisco Reyes, Humberto Busto, Martha Claudia Moreno, Martínez is comedy that is coined as human connections in big cities. We got a good feeling about this one.

Manborg: The Novelization Blasts Onto Bookshelves From Author Bret Nelson And Encyclopocalypse Publications: "Encyclopocalypse Publications, founded by Saturn and Rondo Award-winning writer/producer Mark Alan Miller is proud to add Manborg to its wildly addicting novelization series.
Manborg is penned by Bret Nelson (author of Lumber and Other Tales) from the original script by Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie.
“Whenever I read about the movie, Manborg, it is noted early and often that the team at Astron 6 managed to make it for 1,000 Cad. I’d rather note, early and often, that the budget limitations were overcome by the talent and tenacity of the filmmakers.” Nelson says. “Yes, it has a garage-band feel and it’s rough around the edges. But look deeper. The wide shots of Meganet City feature vehicles and people in the backgrounds, you’d expect a pan across a still image. In dialogue, the usual low-budget,...

Cannes — Four Cannes 57th Critics’ Week shorts, sourced from the Morelia Festival – “Vuelve a mi ,” “Under the Sun,” “In Deep Water” and “Land of Waters, Sea of Mermaids” – highlighted Wednesday the seemingly bottomless well of young talent emerging in Mexico.
In a tradition which runs back to 2005, titles were chosen by Cannes Critics’ Week from a vast spread of fiction, animation and documentary shorts screened every year at Morelia, around 45 in 2017: a rich and ranging panoply, recording Morelia’s origins as a short film festival, which still marks it apart from other big Mexican film events.
Distinguished producer Roberto Fiesco (“David”) and director David Pablos (Un Certain Regard screener “The Chosen Ones”) both had early shorts playing at Morelia. Director Elisa Miller (“El placer es mío”) went straight from winning Morelia with “Watching It Rain” to winning a Palme d’Or at Cannes. The Morelia Festival shorts showcase remains...
