What’s your favourite Australian film of the last decade?
That’s one of the questions Aacta is putting to the general public over the coming week as voting opens for its new Audience Choice Awards.
In contention for the film award are: Peter Rabbit, Red Dog, The Sapphires, The Great Gatsby, The Water Diviner, The Dressmaker, Lion, Ride Like A Girl and Mad Max: Fury Road.
While many of those nominated correspond to the Academy’s own ‘Best Film’ winners over the past 10 years, there are some notable exclusions – 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge, 2018’s Sweet Country and 2019’s The Nightingale.
The Favourite TV Drama of The Decade category sees each broadcaster score two nods – bar Sbs, who were snubbed. They include 10’s Offspring and Neighbours, ABC’s Mystery Road and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Foxtel’s Top of the Lake and Wentworth, Seven’s Molly and Home and Away,...

Recognising that many DOPs are in dire straits financially, the Australian Cinematographers Society is giving one year’s free membership to its 1,600 members.
Acs national president Ron Johanson tells If many members were struggling before the Federal Government decided to deny the $1,500 a fortnight JobKeeper wage subsidy to casual workers.
“Our members were devastated by that decision; they have fallen through the cracks,” he said. “All the state presidents agreed to make membership free for the greater good.”
The initiative kicks in for the financial year starting on July 1. The annual fees range from $160-$250.
That follows the Australian Directors’ Guild decision to give its members a 50 per cent discount.
The 2020 National Acs Awards for Cinematography, which were due to be presented at the National Gallery in Canberra on May 16, will now be held online.

Since 2017, we have been studying the availability of local content on the major subscription streaming services operating in Australia. Our latest report, which examines Netflix, Stan and for the first time, Amazon Prime Video, confirms that the level of local content on these services remains modest, although the number of original productions is growing.
There is also increasing variation between the three services in terms of the kind, age, and genre mix of Australian-made material they carry. The entry of Disney+ and Apple TV+ next month will add new complexity to this rapidly changing market.
We were surprised to learn how much Australian content Amazon Prime Video offers (over 400 Australian titles). However, Amazon is significantly different from Stan and Netflix for several reasons, which make direct comparisons between these services misleading.
Netflix: few local titles, but increasing investment
With an estimated audience of 11 million Australians, Netflix is the clear market leader.

Mel Gibson’s war film winning big at the Aactas is more evidence that the Australian film industry awards are not only flexible but predictable
Comedian Tom Gleeson was the first to go there. Drawing uncomfortable laughter from the crowd at the Aacta industry awards on Monday, the host of Hard Quiz joked: “Hacksaw Ridge has been nominated 13 times, so it’s safe to say that in Australia the film industry isn’t run by Jews.”
Gleeson was referring to the director Mel Gibson’s well-publicised antisemitic rants. They have caused many commentators to wonder whether the once A-lister will ever be able to bounce back, or can ever be rehabilitated.

Beer brand Hahn is to get its own branded content series on Nine.
Five-part series The Beer Factor will celebrate Australian inventors creating beer-related ideas in front of a studio audience and a panel of beer experts.
The series, to be hosted by comedian Tom Gleeson, is going out first on Go! and in late night on Nine.
The concept supports Hahn’s current campaign around ‘pioneering beering’ and has come from the partnership of Nine Entertainment Co. with Hahn’s parent company Lion and ZenithOptimedia with Nine’s cross-platform creative unit Powered and ZenithOptimedia’s branded content division Newcast.
Michael Branagh, director of Powered, said: “This has been a great project to be part of so far. Lion and their agency partners have developed a multi-dimensional brand platform, Pioneering Beering and the Powered team have amplified this in an entertaining and engaging way across the media brands of Nine Entertainment Co.

Reucassel told the Herald Sun that the new show is unlikely to cause the same stir that The Chaser did, saying: "I don't think this show (more)...
