Nicola Coughlan is nowhere near done with “Bridgerton,” but the star of Season 3 can’t help looking down the road. After making the seamless jump from wallflower to leading lady with Penelope’s story, she recognizes that her character will move to the periphery after Parts 1 and 2 premiere this summer.
“I was talking to Luke Newton about this the other day,” Coughlan told IndieWire the day before “Bridgerton” Season 3 – Part 1 premiered. “There’s something nice about kind of going back to the drawing board thing as an actor. You’re not going back to point zero, but it’s nice to go ‘Now I’ve got to work my ass off again to get a job.'”
Coughlan was conscious of the fact that a lot of actors reach a point where they no longer accept auditions, just offers, but she feels it’s too important to test the waters...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Bridgerton Season 3 Part 1.] Bridgerton‘s third season concluded Part 1 with a life-altering cliffhanger as Colin (Luke Newton) proposed marriage to his best friend, Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan), but how will her former bestie and Colin’s sister, Eloise (Claudia Jessie) react to their romance? As fans will recall, Eloise swore she never wanted to see Penelope again after uncovering her secret life as the Ton’s premier gossip columnist, Lady Whistledown in Season 2, but various events brought them together throughout the course of Season 3’s first half. And although Eloise wasn’t thrilled about learning her brother was helping her former bestie to find a husband, she didn’t make too big a fuss over it after Colin reassured her that there was nothing romantic between him and Penelope. Netflix Of course, Colin made this reassurance before he and Penelope shared their first kiss, sending him into a yearning spiral.

One of the best things about Bridgerton is that the show rarely repeats itself. Just as Julia Quinn's book series, on which the show is based, explored a different love story in each novel, the show does the same with its seasons. Starting with Daphne Bridgeton, moving on to Anthony, and then Colin, it also introduces viewers to different romance tropes.
While the novel format allowed the story to revolve around one couple and follow them every moment, the TV show has to include the ensemble to expand the world and make the story feel as realistic as possible. However, it wasn't until season 3 that the show found the perfect balance between the main characters and all the subplots.
Is Bridgerton Season 3 Good?
So far, viewers have only seen the first 4 episodes of the third season of Bridgerton, but the majority of viewers were very pleased with what they saw.

In the new season of Bridgerton, Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton) twirl among tacky fake columns. They argue while gazing not-so-subtly into each other’s eyes. Penelope’s skirts swish over a Roman mosaic of two winged gods. The resident mean girl Cressida quips, “Eros and Psyche, battling it out.”
What on earth is Cressida on about? How do Eros and Psyche mirror Colin and Penelope? Most crucially, how does this myth predict the rest of season 3? Dearest gentle reader, this author shall explain all.
Who Are Cupid and Psyche?
Eros is the Greek name and Cupid is the Roman name for the same god of love. His dramatic romance with Psyche appears on ancient Greek vases and statues from the 4th century Bce onwards. The longest written-out version is from a smutty Latin novel called The Golden Ass, by the North African writer Apuleius.

May Anthony and Kate travel the world having hot pagoda sex on every continent with a suitable climate! Give Penelope and Colin a lucrative publishing contract each and a carriage of their own in which to manually stimulate one another on night-time rides around Mayfair! Joy and fulfilment for all.
The fate of their book counterpart doesn’t come into it. If there’s a better future out there away from the pages of Julia Quinn’s novels, then have at it, my loves.

The first four episodes of the season three of “Bridgerton” dropped on Friday and sent fans of Penelope and Colin (#Polin!) into a carriage-induced frenzy. Anthony Ahn, who directed episodes 3 and 4 (yep: those episodes), replied to a few fan questions on Twitter/X, including one about a key ballroom scene that’s left people in tatters.
Tension between the longtime friends began to build in the first episode, after Colin returned to the ton fresh off a journey that took him through 17 cities, where he presumably… learned a few things. Still hurt after the season two ender in which Colin told friends he would never pursue a relationship with her, Penelope is simultaneously happy to see her friend is back, and mad as hell.
By the end of the first episode, Colin has suggested he help Penelope, who is in her third year of the marriage market, with her quest to get married.

Hannah Dodd didn’t mean to audition for Bridgerton. Then again, she didn’t mean not to.

She had “no idea” what the project was — the title and character name were kept tightly under wraps — only that she would be playing a Regency-era maiden. The world of “Bridgerton” is no stranger to competition. Among London’s elite, wealthy debutantes and ambitious suitors vie for attention and supremacy on every level, from status and title to the very notion of a “diamond” — the best the season has to offer. Now that there are fully 20 of them out in the world, we decided to rank the best “Bridgerton” episodes, and to not overly favor any one season over another. For any “Bridgerton” fans who relished in Kanthony’s slow burn from Season 2, Season 3 has delivered its fair share of screentime with the newlyweds.
“We wanted a little more time with them to see what it felt like when they’re just playful and in love,” showrunner Jess Brownell told TheWrap. “I think they deserved to have that screentime.”
After Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) jumped through every hoop to suppress their attraction to one another due to Anthony’s romance with Kate’s sister, Edwina, Brownell noted the couple “worked so hard to earn their happy ending.”

When Bridgerton premiered on Netflix, it was an instant hit for many reasons. But one of the main ones is the amazing portrayal of different kinds of young love blossoming right then and there.
It wasn't like today in Regency England, there were a lot of courtship rules that young people had to follow, which made them miserable in many ways, but sometimes just added extra thrill to their lives.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from Season 3, Part 1 of Bridgerton.
Dearest gentle readers, the time has come for more Bridgerton.
Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) finally take center stage in Season 3 of the Netflix series. Fans have been chomping at the bit to see Polin’s love story unfold on screen, and this season does not disappoint.
But, of course, Polin isn’t the only source of drama this season. Things are still quite tense between Eloise (Claudia Jessie) and Penelope after the former discovered that the latter is in fact Lady Whistledown. Considering some of the less-than-favorable comments Whistledown has made about the Bridgerton family, and even Eloise herself, it appears it’s going to be near impossible for Penelope to get Eloise’s forgiveness.
Then there’s the question of what will happen when Colin inevitably finds out this secret as well? Will...

Season two of Bridgerton ended with Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma coming together in holy matrimony. Penelope Featherington, however, had her heartbroken as she had fallen in love with Colin Bridgerton, but she learned he had no intention of being with her in a rather rude manner. Bridgerton season three will concentrate on the rest of the Bridgerton siblings and their mother, Dowager Lady Bridgerton.

Dear friends, we've been waiting for this for an incredibly long time, and it's finally happened! The long-awaited third season of Bridgerton landed on Netflix yesterday, May 16, two years after Season 2 was released. But amidst all the incredibly high and loud excitement among viewers of one of Netflix's flagship series, there has been fan angst over the streaming service's policy. After all, we waited two full years to finally get... just four episodes of the new season.
Yes, folks, back in December 2023, it was announced that Bridgerton Season 3 would be split into two parts, with a one-month difference in release. For many, this is very disappointing news, and while the Part 1 finale left many on the edge of their seats, such a long wait left an underwhelming impression. So why was Season 3 split in half, and is Netflix's decision to do so putting Bridgerton's popularity at risk of plummeting in the near future?...

Dearest gentle readers, Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) finally get together at the end of Bridgerton season three, Part 1.
The couple, often regarded as one of the favorites in Julia Quinn’s novel series that serves as the basis of the Netflix hit show, have spent their whole lives in love with each other — even if one of them didn’t realize it until now. And their relationship seems to be in the best place ever when the first four episodes end. But, for how long?
In the final moments of Part 1 (the season has a two-part release), Colin admits he has feelings for Penelope. And after the very steamy carriage scene (a favorite from the book), they’re on track to be married, with the Bridgerton sibling asking his bride-to-be, “Penelope Featherington, are you going to marry me or not?”

Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
Three seasons into “Bridgerton,” fans of the Regency drama are used to the sweeping romances filled with everything hot and heavy — banter, drama, and above all else sex. Every season has had its “diamond”—Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) in Season 1, Edwina (Charithra Chandran) in Season 2, Francesca (Hannah Dodd) in Season 3. While Francesca might be of diamond status in the courting process of the season, her brother Colin’s (Luke Newton) long-anticipated romance with Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) might more closely follow the beats of what the “Bridgerton” audience has become accustomed to.
Francesca’s road to romance remains something unlike what viewers have seen before on “Bridgerton” precisely because of her lack of interest in anything romantic or playing the typical heroine. When we first meet Francesca,...

While there is nothing more exciting than seeing your favorite TV show back with a new season after more than 2 years of waiting, Bridgerton fans' excitement has been somewhat spoiled by the way Season 3 has been handled so far.
Not to mention the Netflix split that will make fans wait another month to get the second part of the season, but it also seems like the showrunner as well as the writing team didn't listen to a single ounce of criticism that fans had for season 2. Now that season 3 is repeating the same mistakes, it feels like Bridgerton will never escape this repetitive cycle.
Is Bridgerton Season 3 Better Than Season 2?
First of all, season 3 introduces another love triangle to the story. Daphne and Simon had their moment of doubt when the Queen introduced them to the Prince, Kate and Anthony tried to dance around their feelings while Anthony was courting Edwina,...

Oh, my God.
The “Bridgerton” team absolutely heard some fans’ complaints about the lack of steamy scenes in Season 2. This time around, there is no such issue.
“It’s all about character,” showrunner Jess Brownell told IndieWire. “In Season 2, we had a lot of discussions about how much intimacy we wanted to see. And it had everything to do with the fact that Anthony is a very rigid and duty-bound character. His arc is about that rigidity. And so him just willy nilly having intimacy before marriage with someone wouldn’t make any sense. Penelope and Colin are not nearly as rigid as Anthony. So it was much easier to show more intimacy this season, and it is definitely a very steamy season.

Den of Geek interviewed Bridgerton showrunner and executive producer Jess Brownell to find out the plans for tying in Queen Charlotte’s backstory into the main Bridgerton series.
Bridgerton season 3 is based primarily on Julia Quinn’s original novel Romancing Mister Bridgerton which centers Colin and Penelope’s storyline. Queen Charlotte has only a fleeting mention later on in the novel series, while Violet and Lady Danbury are present only as supporting characters guiding their families in the Ton. Viscountess Violet Bridgerton and Lady...

When Bridgerton first broke through, it felt subversive. As sex has disappeared from film, Bridgerton featured some of the most intimate and erotic sequences on television. Placing this eroticism in a period drama gave the series a unique link. It immediately felt closer to Weathering Heights or Dangerous Liaisons. Now, after two seasons and a spin-off, the novelty has partially worn off. However, Season 3 of Bridgerton does not falter due to complacency. Rather, Shondaland and the showrunners overload the season. While Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton finally take the spotlight, their story sags under the weight of carrying more than a half-dozen subplots.

[This story contains major spoilers from Bridgerton season three, Part 1.]
Bridgerton‘s third season has hit the Ton, and the final moments of the Part 1 release will have fans of the book and show alike on the edge of their seats, awaiting what comes next in Part 2.
Four episodes (and two seasons) of romantic buildup on the Netflix period drama between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) culminates in the famous carriage scene from Julia Quinn’s novel Romancing Mr. Bridgerton (of which this season is based), where the two engage in a steamy makeout scene and make it to second base.
Before they know it, the carriage arrives at the Bridgerton family house, and they need a moment to figure out what to do. Colin steps out of the carriage and extends his hand toward Penelope. “Are you coming with me?” he asks. “What? Your family will see me,” she responds. “For God’s sake, Penelope Featherington.

Watching Bridgerton is like picking up your favourite novel and diving right back into it as if no time has passed. The first episode is titled ‘Out of The Shadows,’ it does exactly what it says. The episode starts by introducing a newly married Viscount and Viscountess Bridgterton. The happy Bridgerton family soars on with anxiety about Francesca’s debut while Eloise recovers from two heartbreaks – her fight with Penelope Featherington and her first heartbreak with Theo.
There is so much happening in season 3 that it might feel almost rushed.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Bridgerton Season 3 Part 1.] It’s been a long time coming—Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton’s (Luke Newton) first kiss, that is. Bridgerton’s latest loves spent the first two seasons in the friend zone only to quickly flip the script just two episodes into Season 3. While Bridgerton set up the friends-to-lovers arc from the very beginning, Season 3 made way for the story to break free when Colin offers to help his “very good friend” learn the ways of wooing through various courting lessons so she can find a husband. But when their scheme is blown up after Eloise (Claudia Jessie) blabs at a ball, Penelope feels hopeless about her prospects, leading to one big ask from her bestie. Reasoning that she could die tomorrow and remain un-kissed, Penelope pleads with Colin to change that status, leading to a surprisingly sweet and poignant first kiss for the couple. Warning: contains spoilers for Bridgerton season 2.
Of all the separations shown in Bridgerton’s second season, the finale bust-up between Penelope and Eloise was perhaps the most painful. The former best friends who grew up across the street from one another had once been book-loving accomplices. They’d found solace in each other’s company, away from the ribbons-and-marriage-filled heads of other girls their age. When Eloise told Pen that she never wished to see or speak to her again, they weren’t the only ones heartbroken about it.
That heartbreak continues in season three, the first four episodes of which are now streaming on Netflix, while the second half will follow on June 13. Months later, Pen and Eloise are still not speaking, while Pen is also keeping her distance from Eloise’s brother Colin, the man she secretly loves, after he unwittingly hurt her feelings at the Featherington ball.
