Liz Patrick, who took over directing Saturday Night Live two years ago, won her first primetime Emmy on Sunday.
She won a Creative Arts Emmy for the episode co-hosted by Steve Martin and Martin Short. She beat Last Week Tonight’s Paul Pennolino, Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s Andy Fisher, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s Jim Hoskinson and The Problem with Jon Stewart’s Andre Allen.
Patrick was nominated last year for the Billie Eilish-hosted episode but lost out to A Black Lady Sketch Show’s Bridget Stokes.
She has also previously won a number of daytime Emmys for her work on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Patrick took over from Don Roy King in January 2022. King, who is thought to have directed more hours of live U.S. network television than anyone else, had been the director of the long-running NBC series since 2006 and won 11 Emmys with 16 nominations.

Following its surprise 2022 Emmy win for Best Variety Series Directing, “A Black Lady Sketch Show” is out of the running for the same prize this year, leaving an opportunity for “Saturday Night Live” to bounce back and achieve its 12th victory in the category. It does, however, face several formidable challengers, including “The Problem with Jon Stewart,” the host of which once starred on “The Daily Show,” which notably halted a “Saturday Night Live” success streak in 2015.
“Saturday Night Live” is the only former winner in this directing lineup, while “The Problem with Jon Stewart” stands as the only new nominee. The three other returning contenders are “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which have now amassed a collective total of 18 mentions in this category.

Chris Rock's 2014 film "Top Five" is about a character named Andre Allen, but really it's about Chris Rock. Andre is an actor best known for silly comedy films, his biggest hit being a cop comedy wherein he wore a silly bear suit. Now on the road to recovery from alcoholism, the Allen character is attempting to break into more "serious" cinema by playing the real-life Haitian revolutionary Dutty Boukman. The bulk of "Top Five" is an extended, confessional interview between Andre and a journalist named Chelsea (Rosario Dawson) as they walk and talk and tell stories and anecdotes. "Top Five" is a conversational and breezy film that gently criticizes the state of modern comedy, the nature of fame, and how ridiculous life can feel after surviving a dark time of addiction.

Since the creation of the Best Variety Series Directing Emmy category in 2009, NBC’s late night staple “Saturday Night Live” has prevailed a whopping six times (2010-14 and 2017) for director Don Roy King. In addition, Dave Wilson also won for directing “SNL” back in 1976 when the category was called Best Comedy-Variety or Music Series. No program even comes close to matching “Saturday Night Live’s” seven wins in this category, with “The Carol Burnett Show” coming in second place with four victories for Dave Powers. Now “SNL” has leading 2/11 odds to win again, which would increase its record to eight directing Emmys.

Winners of the 70th annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be revealed on Feb. 3 in a ceremony hosted by Judd Apatow at the Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Prizes will be doled out in three film and eight television categories as listed below.
Unlike other show biz awards ceremonies, the DGA fetes each of the five nominees for Best Feature Film Director, bringing them onstage for a presentation and acceptance speech. This year’s contenders for this important precursor to the Oscar are Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water”), Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”), Martin McDonagh (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Christopher Nolan (“Dunkirk”) and Jordan Peele (“Get Out”). “Saturday Night Live” will make it back-to-back wins at Saturday’s Directors Guild Awards. In our latest combined odds, Don Roy King is the 1/3 favorite to win the variety series prize for helming the Jimmy Fallon-hosted episode of “SNL” from last season. King won the Emmy in September for the same episode.
The veteran “SNL” director is ahead of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”’s Paul Pennolino (5/1 odds), “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee”’s Andre Allen (18/1 odds), “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”’s Jim Hoskinson (50/1 odds) and “Real Time with Bill Maher”’s Paul G. Casey (100/1 odds).

Eat your heart out, moviegoers. Everyone loves a good love story whether they admit it or not, and the 21st century has brought us more than a few couples worth rooting for: Clementine and Joel, Ennis and Jack, Joaquin and his computer. Often these unions are unconventional or hidden in the guise of something more high-concept — straightforward romances are so 20th century — but at the end of the day, we all want to see a happy ending for our smitten lovers.
Our list goes all over the map, from the mainstream maestro Nancy Meyers to international masters like Wong Kar-Wai. Some were blockbuster hits (“Twilight,” “The Proposal”); others have hardly been seen stateside at all (Lee Chang-dong’s 2002 “Oasis”). However, all of them illustrate some essential element of love, from falling to longing and all the sticky bits in between.

2016-07-15T11:46:13-07:00'Ballers' Returns with Andy Garcia and Plenty of Rock
Producer Mark Wahlberg has claimed that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told Wahlberg that he wouldn't be able to have NFL players appear on his football-themed HBO comedy series Ballers. Goodell didn't make good on the alleged threat during the series' first season, and it probably won't be in force for the upcoming second season, either. Even without cameos from real athletes, though, the second season of the series has plenty of star power going for it.
The biggest new addition to the cast is Andy Garcia in the role of Andre Allen, Spencer Strasmore's (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) biggest competition in the field of sports management. Garcia's Allen is the guy that Strasmore has to beat if he wants to be the manager in town, and that's exactly what he intends to do.

2015 was a particularly exemplary year for all kinds of movies, but particularly in genre and blockbuster cinema. When there's so much to talk about, it's inevitable that some of the really good stuff gets lost in the mix of awards season chatter, but that's especially true when there's still some residual stigma about movies outside of the 'worthy' release schedule that will arrive in UK cinemas between now and the Academy Awards ceremony in February.

Chris Rock's latest outing is a semi-autobiographical take on the rise and fall (and rise?) of a comedy star...
Your mileage may vary on inside-track Hollywood comedies. Among the greats, there are biting satires like The Player or Swimming With Sharks and broader, sillier works like Tropic Thunder or Bowfinger, but the kind of rarefied air in which they largely unfold can sometimes be suffocating.
Thankfully, that's not the case with Top Five, Chris Rock's first project as a writer-director since 2007's I Think I Love My Wife, and inarguably his best so far. With a semi-autobiographical approach, the film clearly has a lot of influences from other films but thrives on a brand of charm that is entirely its own.
Andre Allen (Rock) is a stand-up comedian turned movie star who is best known for a trilogy of cringe-making comedy movies in which he stars as a crime-fighting bear called Hammy.

Over the course of one day, Allen fights with his reality-tv star fiancée and is interviewed by a reporter from the New York Times, played by Rosario Dawson Continue reading...

Chris Rock writes, directs and acts in the funny, self-aware and uplifting comedy Top Five co-starring Rosario Dawson.
The actor and comedian takes the lead as Andre Allen, a stand-up comic and recovering alcoholic who's desperate to be taken seriously in the shallow world of Hollywood while becoming submerged within a celebrity-obsessed culture.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Chris reveals he's currently writing a script for his next movie. It's not, as previously reported, a sequel to Top Five, but will have a similar tone and some of the same cast.
Chris talks about Jay Z and Kanye West's involvement as co-producers, and how there's perhaps a "dash of Kardashian" in Gabrielle Union's reality TV star Erica Long. He also responds to Woody Allen comparisons, and tells us who us his top five stand-up comedians of all time are:
How much of your own personal experiences did you carry into Top Five?...

Writer, director, and star Chris Rock is so close to something great here, but he gives in too easily to the unchallenging and the very conventional. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not the biggest fan of Chris Rock
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Chris Rock writes and directs himself in his own version of the Sandler-going-serious flick Funny People, though Rock wants to have his “Why can’t you all respect me as an artist?!” cake and have his yucks, too. Rock (Grown Ups 2) barely disguises himself as “Andre Allen,” Hollywood superstar with a string of deeply shitty (and enormously popular) action comedies to his name who is now trying to go straight and Oscar-baiting with a historical drama about a brutal 1791 Haitian slave rebellion that saw thousands of white slaveowners slaughtered. There really is an amazing movie to be made about that subject,...

Even the Farrelly brothers, in their heyday, would have shied away from some of the bad sex gross-out gags that Chris Rock serves up in Top Five. He writes, directs and stars in a fitfully hilarious portrait of an A-List comedian at a personal crossroads, though the central romance with Rosario Dawson doesn't quite hit the same dizzy heights as the stand-up material which obviously inspired the film.
Rock calls his character Andre Allen, maybe a vague reference to Woody Allen as the action opens and unfolds on the streets of New York where he gasbags on wide-ranging matters with Dawson's savvy New York Times journalist Chelsea Brown. Chicago – Chris Rock isn’t a huge writer/director, but when he does make a film, it’s an event to consider. For example, he made black president tale “Head of State” long before then-senator Barack Obama was even considered for the real-life role, and whether behind the stand-up mic or in an interview, he’s a voice to be reckoned with.
Even though he’s more in films than behind them, “Top Five” wants to be Rock’s “Stardust Memories,” an open conversation about who he was, who he is, and who he wants to be next.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Rock’s comedy is hit-and-miss. Some sequences are excellent, like when Cedric the Entertainer steals the show in an albeit disgusting flashback. Or when he has an epiphany in a jail cell, with a special cameo in place. And there are some good touches too, such as the many faceless cat-calls...

You know what movie deserved a bit more love? "Top Five." Released last December, it got lost in the holiday shuffle, and that's a shame because it's a genuinely funny, frank, warm, and romantic effort from writer/director/star Chris Rock. But the good news is that it's coming to home video, and today you can check out a deleted scene from movie. In the sequence, we join comedy superstar actor Andre Allen as he returns to stand up roots. In the movie, it's a climatic high point, with Rock delivering plenty of zingers left and right, but this one didn't make the cut. It finds him riffing on "42," the Jackie Robinson biopic from a couple of years back. Mostly, his criticisms aren't that sharp and the whole thing isn't terribly funny, but if you ever wondered what he thought about the baseball movie, well know you know. "Top Five...

It may not have been the awards player many of us thought it would be, but Chris Rock’s Top Five is still a comedic tour-de-force and in many circles thought to be the funniest film of 2014. Now, Paramount Home Media Distribution has announced that it will be bringing the star-studded film to Blu-Ray on March 17th, two weeks after it debuts on Digital HD.
The film finds Rock playing Andre Allen, a stand-up legend who returns to New York on the eve of his wedding to a vacuous socialite (Gabrielle Union). Walking around the city with the journalist (Rosario Dawson) sent to interview him, Andre begins to question his life thus far and reconsider the road that he’s already been travelling down.
Top Five features a host of all-star supporting players, including Kevin Hart, Cedric the Entertainer, Tracy Morgan, J.B. Smoove, Sherri Shepherd, Michael Che, Jay Pharoah, Leslie Jones and Ben Vereen.

There's a joke in the middle of Chris Rock’s Top Five that almost scuttled the movie for me. I say this as a fan of both Top Five and of Chris Rock: His press tour for Top Five has been a refreshing injection of candor and common sense into the absurd theater of American racial politics. The movie itself is a stylistic breakthrough for him — a work he wrote, directed, and starred in that populates an entire world with a multiplicity of black men who are diverse, interesting, and, above all, funny. But there’s a crucial scene involving a gay character — or at least a guy on the low — that’s cheap and almost ruins an otherwise good movie. The scene — and here’s where you might want to stop reading and circle back if you haven't seen Top Five yet — occurs when Andre Allen (Chris Rock...

The greatest press tour of the year continued last night as Chris Rock made an appearance as Hashtag the Panda The Tonight Show. Rock was edging in on Jimmy Fallon's sit-down with Ben Stiller (the last Hashtag), who was there to promote Night at the Museum 3. He has a movie to promote too! There's an added layer of humor too because in Top Five, Chris Rock's character Andre Allen is best known for playing a guy in a bear costume, Hammy the Bear. We've got to hand it to him, Chris Rock makes a great Hashtag the Panda, too.

I could only imagine what must have been going through Charlie Rose's mind, as they were shooting this scene. Or maybe nothing at all! Next to "Selma," Chris Rock's latest, "Top Five," is definitely another much-buzzed about "black film" this year, in release this month, also courtesy of Paramount Pictures. Rated "R" by the MPAA for "strong sexual content, nudity, crude humor, language, and some drug use," the film is now out in theaters, expanding this weekend, after a limited release, so more of you should be able to see it. Earlier this month, Chris Rock made a stop on his tour of America in St. Louis with a special advance screening of his film Top Five. Wamg is giving away Run-Of-Engagement passes to see the film.
Pulsing with the rhythm of his greatest stand-up, Chris Rock’s Top Five takes things to the next level, reveling in the high and the low, and blending a star-studded comedic romp with an irresistible romance. Top Five digs under the surface of show business, politics, rap, and the exigencies of being black and famous today—holding it all up to the light in the way only Chris Rock can. Top Five review: Chris Rock dazzles in full meta jacket
I think of my brain as a system of valves, and I often have to plug certain parts to fully enjoy a movie. The casual racism valve gets quite a workout, but the bolt on the overt sexism valve is completely stripped — after years of use, that one just spins in place without ever fully squeezing shut, which might be part of the reason I wasn’t able to enjoy Top Five as much as I’d hoped I would.
I’ve admired Chris Rock’s recent media tour. He speaks so pointedly and plainly about systemic racism in Hollywood that I thought the movie he’d written and directed would reflect some of those lessons,...
Top Five review: Chris Rock dazzles in full meta jacket
I think of my brain as a system of valves, and I often have to plug certain parts to fully enjoy a movie. Ever since she went head-to-head with Kirsten Dunst in "Bring It On," we've been waiting for Gabrielle Union to have her moment. She's shown glimpses of what a great actress she is, but she hasn't really found the role that could take her to the next level. Union's impressive play on a TV reality queen in Chris Rock's "Top Five" is just another welcome tease on how talented she really is. Far from the streets of Manhattan, where Andre Allen (Rock) and Chelsea Brown (Rosario Dawson) conduct their interview, Erica Long (Union) is preparing for a televised wedding spectacle in the film. America's biggest comedy movie star, Andre, and its biggest reality TV star are going to walk down the aisle and every moment will be recorded for viewers to salivate over. Andre is pretty uncomfortable with this, but as "Top Five" rolls on we discover why he's so...

Prior to Chris Rock’s new film Top Five, my favorite of his scattered (sometimes sadly corny and embarrassing) big screen efforts has been the writer-director’s illuminating documentary Good Hair where he played himself: genial, witty, and inquisitive. Most of his movies underestimate Rock’s range of influences: his stage persona the dominant perception in everyone’s mind. But unless you’re Rodney Dangerfield, seldom does a stage act translate well in features. The wacky inspirations of Louis Ck and Rock’s Pootie Tang were tamed by studio fools; CB4 is just a series of bits. When he does settle his rhythms for a good indie role (2 Days in New York, Nurse Betty), Rock is affable but lacks the confidence shown in concert or a club. Finally perfecting the formula, Top Five is Rock’s triple-hat artist’s statement on fame, culture, relationships, New York City, stand-up, hip hop,...

Chris Rock writes, directs and stars in the new comedy "Top Five", his most mature work as a director to date. Rock plays Andre Allen, a recovering alcoholic movie star/comedian who doesn't want to be funny anymore. It takes place on the day his new dramatic movie "Uprize" opens, as he spends the day with a New York Times writer who is doing a profile on him. It is also the eve of his marriage to his reality TV star fiancee, played by Gabrielle Union. The Times writer, Chelsea Brown, is played by Rosario Dawson, and she challenges Andre to reveal more of himself to the media and public than he's ever done before.
Now, those going in expecting a full blown comedy might be disappointed. There are quite a few explosively funny scenes, such as a Houston hotel room rendezvous and Rock's character's bachelor party, but there is...

After all of the amazingly spot-on quotes Chris Rock has given over the last two weeks, we almost forgot he has a movie to promote. Top Five, written, directed by, and starring Rock, hits theaters Friday and brings with it a pack of today’s most hilarious comedic voices. Aside from great cameos, the film is an accurate look at the concept of celebrity culture (reality stars included). As Andre Allen, Rock plays a successful movie star at a crossroads in his career. He wants to be taken seriously but loses sight of what he’s best at after fat Hollywood check for a Tracy Jordan-esque franchise and too much drinking. Uprize, a super serious depiction of the Haitian revolution is supposed to put him back on top, but all anyone wants to talk about is his upcoming wedding.

With the holiday season approaching, there are a lot of movies out there vying not just for attention from awards voters this December, but from audiences too. And over the next couple weeks, there's something for everyone at the box office, from family films to the annual Oscar bait to Ya action to the final chapter in a certain juggernaut fantasy franchise. But if you haven't already, you should go ahead and add Chris Rock's "Top Five" to your December movie wishlist.
In the film (which he also wrote and directed), Rock stars as Andre Allen, a formerly beloved comedian trying to make the transition to "serious actor" status with his latest movie, a failed Oscar-bait retelling of the Haitian Revolution. At the same time, his reality-star fiancée (Gabrielle Union) plans their made-for-tv wedding and a New York Times reporter (Rosario Dawson) attempts to interview Allen about the reason behind his sudden career shift.

Top Five
Written & Directed by Chris Rock
USA, 2014
Chris Rock’s new tour de force, Top Five, is so cleverly written that you don’t even realize it’s a romantic-comedy until the deed is nearly done. By that point, even the coldest, most cynical man is powerless to resist its charms. Smart, nasty and frequently hilarious, there is more than enough substance to compensate for the occasional missteps. Between this and Jon Stewart’s Rosewater, comedians are flexing some serious cinematic muscle in 2014.
Rock gives a stellar performance as comedian-turned-actor Andre Allen. Andre’s dubious claim to fame comes from playing a crime-fighting, live-action teddy bear named Hammy. Similar to Riggan in Birdman, three blockbuster Hammy movies have left Andre hell bent on earning some respect for his acting chops. Respect is hard to come by, however, when your marriage to a reality television star (Gabrielle Union) is more...

When a big milestone approaches it’s common for most of us to look back and reflect on our lives and career. With the big 5-0 looming, Chris Rock, one of the smartest and funniest stand-up comedians, has done just that with Top Five (not a reference to the B-day, but a quick listing of favorite music artists used as an ‘ice breaker’, like “Where’d you go to school?” here in St. Louis). Oh, and this is the third feature film he’s directed (he wrote this one, too). Mr. Rock has been part of the national comedy scene for nearly 25 years since he was one of the cast members of TV’s “Saturday Night Live”, with a few movie bit roles under his belt (Beverly Hills Cop 2). He’s gone from cocky kid with a mike to screen veteran, so now what does he want to say about...

"It's never just a movie," says Chris Rock's Andre Allen in "Top Five," and that sentiment definitely applies to the comedy veteran's latest directorial effort. While on the surface it's an incisive and playful look at celebrity, media, and fame, it's also about the difficulty, fear, and risk of stepping outside your comfort zone, whether in your career or personal life. While there are many meta layers to "Top Five"—also written by Rock, clearly drawing from his many years in the industry—it avoids the trap of simply being a celebrity vehicle about celebrity, by displaying a surprising heart beneath its very funny surface. The film follows Andre—a familiar but very fictionalized version of Rock himself—and finds the popular A-lister at a crossroads. His wedding to reality star Erica Long (Gabrielle Union) is just a few days away and will be a big TV event on Bravo.

Before I saw a single frame of Chris Rock's Top Five, the buzz suggested it was some kind of riotous comedy that would have me bent over with laughter, but it's not, and I don't mean that in a bad way. It's more a drama with comedic aspects and very much a cousin to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman in that it tells the story of an actor whose heyday as a mainstream celebrity appears to be behind him and as a result, he's looking at an indeterminate future. Rock plays Andre Allen, best known as the star of the Hammy the Bear trilogy of movies. The Hammy character was a police officer that was either dressed as a bear or supposed to be an actual bear, I couldn't tell, but now Andre is putting all that behind him as he focuses on more serious fare such as his latest...

Rude, crude, and lewd as it is, Top Five is still a big step forward for Chris Rock as a filmmaker. In essence, that's because it more closely resembles his brilliant stand-up shows, where he gets on a roll and never stops moving, darting into raw social issues and then drawing them out into extended set-pieces, filled with piercing insights. This movie feels substantially different than the broadly-aimed Head of State (2003) or the faux-sophisticated I Think I Love My Wife (2007), which drowned in earnest romance. Top Five only stumbles when it stops to make a point, or when it arcs off-course with an absurd plot twist or two. Rock's character in the movie, Andre Allen, is a 'what if'' variation of himself: What...

Plot: A day in the life of a successful comedian who, sick of selling out after a series of terrible (though lucrative) movies, goes on the promotion trail in New York for his new film, a "serious drama" about the Haitian Revolution. Along the way he deals with his spoiled reality star wife, goes back to his old neighborhood, and falls in love with the reporter writing a profile on him. Paramount Pictures has set release dates for writer/director Chris Rock's latest, "Top Five," which was at the center of a bidding war after a successful Tiff premiere, where it was well-received by critics (read Zeba's review of the film here). Rated "R" by the MPAA for "strong sexual content, nudity, crude humor, language, and some drug use," the studio will open the film nationwide this Friday, December 12. "Top Five" tells the story of New York City comedian-turned-film star Andre Allen (Rock), whose unexpected...

It feels that Chris Rock has waited his entire career to make a film as pointed and explosively funny as Top Five, his third and best directorial effort to date. He takes a couple of cues from Woody Allen’s Annie Hall and Stardust Memories and some of the daring, more experimental techniques of Louis C.K.’s FX series, without losing much of the vicious wit that defines his stand-up routines. Not all of it works, but Rock is willing to take risks and put his insecurities about fame, fortune and being funny out there for audience consumption in a way that is as wild and accomplished as anything he has ever done.

It’s been a few years since Chris Rock made a good film. The last movie he made was Grown Ups 2, but the last good movie that I saw him in and enjoyed was in 2010’s Death at a Funeral. He has a new film coming out called Top Five that he wrote, directed, and stars in. It looks like he made a great movie that his fans will enjoy, and I’m looking forward to checking it out. Today we have a red-band trailer for the film for you to enjoy.

In "Top Five," which is written and directed by Chris Rock, Rosario Dawson plays Chelsea Brown, a New York Times reporter. Her current assignment has her shadowing and interviewing actor Andre Allen (also Rock), as he promotes a new film. The experience for both Brown and Allen proves an enlightening one. Both have secrets revealed and have to reexamine some of their preconceived notions. Sitting down to talk to Dawson about the role, she is quite forthcoming about the difficulties inherent in taking part in an interview. Not just from the reporter's end, but the actor's as well. "There's an art to it," she tells us, referencing the constructing and asking of questions and keeping the interviewee's "feet to the fire." There is also, which may be implied but not stated, an art to answering such questions. One wrong sentence on either end and things can go off the rails completely.

I honestly didn't know Chris Rock had this in him. As a stand-up, Rock is one of the greats. The way he evolved was incredibly impressive, and by the time he released "Bring The Pain," he was in complete command of his craft. He knew how to ride an audience to victory. On film, though, I don't think Rock has ever even approached mastering things the way he has with live performance. He's done stuff I've enjoyed, and one of the things that made his early work noteworthy was just how extreme he was. His scene in "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" was one of that film's biggest laughs for me. For literally years afterwards, the thought of "One rib!" would kill me all over again. He got to play with Eddie Murphy in "Boomerang," and I remember being excited to see the two of them in a scene, knowing...
