A new entry in the “Insidious” franchise has been set for the theaters. The next installment of the Blumhouse Productions horror property, co-produced by Screen Gems, has been added to Sony’s theatrical slate, with the studio dating the film for an Aug. 29, 2025 release.
No further details on the project were disclosed, including whether series regulars such as Patrick Wilson and Leigh Whannell would be involved. The newly announced feature is different from “Thread: An Insidious Tale,” an in-universe series spin-off that was first reported on by Deadline in May 2023 and is said to star Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani, with Jeremy Slater attached to write and direct.
Barring no other “Insidious” installments releasing before this newly announced one, this would mark the sixth entry in the horror franchise and the first since last year’s “Insidious: The Red Door,” which saw actors Patrick Wilson and Ty Simpkins return to...

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Another Lionsgate movie is headed to Netflix, marking the first time it’s been available on an SVOD service. The Re-Education of Molly Singer drops on Netflix in the United States on February 5th, 2024.
Ty Simpkins and Jaime Pressly (My Name is Earl) headline the cast of the R-rated comedy movie that’s about attorney Molly Singer, who is on the verge of being fired and the only way to save her job is by re-enrolling at her old alma mater and re-experience college. For the most part, Lionsgate theatrical movies head to Starz in the first window as outlined by a deal struck back in 2021. However, over the past year, we’ve seen some of the smaller movies head to Netflix in that first window. It began back in July 2023 with the...

It may seem hard to believe, but the Insidious franchise is getting long in the tooth! The first Insidious movie was released all the way back in 2010, kickstarting an unlikely string of movies under the watchful eye of Saw horror duo Leigh Whannell and James Wan.
At first, the franchise focused on the Lambert family, whose move to a new home coincided with their son Dalton falling into a mysterious coma. They soon found out that it wasn’t their home that was haunted, but their family. Thanks to the Lamberts’ ability to astral project their consciousnesses, they can access “The Further”, a purgatory dimension where they’re at risk of attracting restless spirits, demonic and otherwise.

It appears that we here at /Film are in collective agreement: November is the perfect month to catch up on all the spooky season stuff you didn't get around to in October. Great Thanksgiving films are few and far between, and unless you're just really into the winter holidays, it's too early to start diving into your favorite films and series about Christmas, Hanukkah, you name it. Plus, this is also the time of year when studios begin marching out their awards contenders in droves, so you've got to make room for those as well.
Case in point: For years now, November has seen Netflix roll out its first wave of serious Oscar hopefuls, and 2023 will be very much business as usual in that respect. That's not to say it's all prestige offerings and biopics for the next four weeks. For example, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" fans will finally...

"We all deserve a second chance at a first impression." Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for an indie college comedy titled The Re-Education of Molly Singer, made by filmmaker Andy Palmer. His entire filmography isn't impressive, which should be a sign of what to expect with this. To save her job, a young lawyer must go undercover, enrolling as a freshman at her old alma mater, in order to resuscitate the well being of her Boss' terribly awkward teenage son. Molly goes to battle with stuck-up hall monitors, boozed-up frat brothers, and her old archenemy in a hilarious quest through the past to save her future. The comedy stars Jaime Pressly as Brenda, Ty Simpkins as Elliot, Britt Robertson as Molly Singer, Nico Santos, Cierra Ramirez, Jonathan Lipnicki, and Wendie Malick. This sounds like the copy cat junk version of Jennifer Lawrence's No Hard Feelings, similar concept about...

"Insidious: The Red Door" crept into theaters back at the beginning of July, and just over a month later, the horror sequel became the most successful movie in the entire "Insidious" franchise. Not bad for a film series that began over 12 years ago. It just goes to show you that horror is still a big winner at the box office, even when it's not October, and franchise films can still be profitable, as long as you don't spend a quarter of a million dollars to make them.
Before "The Red Door," it had been 10 years since we had an "Insidious" movie focusing on the Lambert family, played by Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Ty Simpkins. This sequel catches up with a grown up Dalton (played again by Ty Simpkins), the kid who was possessed in the first movie after becoming entangled in a spirit world known as The Further, as he heads to art school,...

Directed by franchise star Patrick Wilson, this year’s Insidious: The Red Door is now the highest grossing film in the entire franchise, and it’s currently the highest grossing horror movie at the worldwide box office this year. While the film is still playing in theaters, Insidious: The Red Door is also now available to watch from the comfort of your own home.
An unexpected surprise last week, Insidious: The Red Door is now available to purchase ($24.99) or rent ($19.99) on Digital platforms including Amazon and Vudu.
To whet your appetite, Bloody Disgusting has been provided with an exclusive clip from the film’s bonus features package, which features insights from both Patrick Wilson and co-star Rose Byrne. The clip dives into the “full circle moment” of Insidious: The Red Door, which returns not only to the original movie’s storyline but also puts Wilson in the director’s seat.

"Insidious: The Red Door" may already be on VOD but the movie is continuing its incredible hot streak a the box office. The fifth entry in the series had already managed to secure its place as the highest-grossing entry in this particular franchise but now, it stands alone as the biggest horror movie of 2023 overall. Despite its digital release, the film had another solid weekend and gets to claim this coveted title -- at least for now.
Thanks to another $1 million weekend at the domestic box office, "The Red Door" has now earned $182.4 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo. That means it now takes the crown as the highest-grossing horror movie of the year. The title previously belonged to "M3GAN," which earned $179.9 million earlier this year as one of 2023's first legitimate blockbuster hits. Officially the highest grossing film in the entire Insidious franchise, the Patrick Wilson-directed Insidious: The Red Door just passed another major milestone over the weekend.
The worldwide total for Insidious: The Red Door as of this writing is $182,430,087, which makes the franchise’s fifth installment the highest grossing horror movie of 2023 to date!
The previous worldwide record holder for the horror genre this year was Universal’s big time success M3GAN, which finished its run with $180 million earlier this year.
Other horror movies this year that have come close to Insidious: The Red Door‘s record-holding amount include Scream VI ($168.9 million) and Evil Dead Rise ($146.7 million).
In just its first few days of release, Meg 2: The Trench has already gobbled up $142 million worldwide, so it’s only a matter of time before it completely smashes down The Red Door.
But for now, the new Insidious movie holds the crown.

After five years, “Insidious” is taking fans to the Further once more with “Insidious: The Red Door.” The latest installment is now available on Digital, which means now is the perfect time to catch up on the creepy franchise (or experience it for the first time). Beginning with “Insidious” in 2010, the horror films center around a family who finds themselves haunted by demons from another realm, along with the people who try to help them.
Created by horror veteran Leigh Whannell (who also created the “Saw” franchise along with James Wan), each installment of the “Insidious” takes viewers deeper into the Further, a nightmarish dimension populated by tortured spirits and ruled over by a malevolent demon. “The Red Door” will be the fifth installment in the franchise, and will once again focus on the Lambert family, with Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Ty Simpkins all reprising their roles from the first two films.

While "Insidious: The Red Door" may be nearing the end of its box office run (it's available on Digital as of today), the movie is rounding out its time in theaters on a high note. With its most recent weekend in the books, Patrick Wilson's feature directorial debut now stands alone as the highest-grossing entry in the wildly successful horror franchise.
As of this writing, "The Red Door" has earned $174.8 million worldwide (per The Numbers), meaning it has overtaken 2018's "Insidious: The Last Key" ($172.8 million) to become the biggest entry in the series to date. For Sony Pictures, the best part is that the movie carries an extremely reasonable $16 million production budget. Even better? That still makes it the most expensive film of the five that have been released thus far. These movies have been made on the cheap and have consistently delivered the goods. In this case, it...

Yesterday, we shared the news that Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth film in the Insidious horror franchise (you can read our review Here), has officially become the highest-grossing entry in the franchise at the worldwide box office, with its $174,382,000 leaving previous record holder Insidious: The Last Key‘s final count of $172,811,971 in the dust. Now the film has been given a premium VOD release, showing up on outlets like Vudu and Amazon (rent or buy it at This Link).
Insidious: The Red Door marks the feature directorial debut of Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2 star Patrick Wilson. The screenplay was written by Halloween Kills co-writer Scott Teems, based on an idea from Leigh Whannell, who created the franchise with James Wan. The story catches up with the family from the first two films, the Lamberts, ten years after the end of Insidious 2. Josh Lambert heads east to drop his son Dalton off at an idyllic,...

I haven’t seen much chatter about Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth film in the Insidious horror franchise (you can read our review Here), but movie-goers have obviously been showing up for it. The film had a very successful opening weekend, drawing in $32.65 million at the domestic box office and $64 million worldwide on a budget that’s said to be around $16 million. Now The Numbers has confirmed that Insidious: The Red Door has managed to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise at the worldwide box office. It’s currently sitting at a total of $174,382,000, surpassing its predecessor Insidious: The Last Key‘s final count of $172,811,971. And its theatrical run isn’t over yet.
As of right now, Insidious: The Red Door‘s domestic number sits at $78,082,000, so Insidious: Chapter 2 still holds the domestic record of $83,586,447. But if The Red Door can manage to pull in another $5 million and change at home,...

Hollywood had tried to get Watchmen to the big screen for decades, but the acclaimed graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons proved notoriously difficult to adapt. After years in development hell and a revolving door of directors, Zack Snyder successfully brought Watchmen to life. Despite its passionate fan base, Watchmen was polarizing and under-performed at the box office, leading Patrick Wilson to wonder if audiences weren’t ready for it.
Patrick Wilson recently spoke with CinemaBlend about Insidious: The Red Door and touched upon Watchmen, which he said is the only movie of his that he’s watched “front to back” since it debuted. “I wanted to look at it as an older guy, as a filmmaker,” Wilson said. “I knew Zack was ahead of the curve, y’know, it’s weird to say that audiences weren’t ready for it, but you need a movie like that.

The horror franchise’s original cast is back in Insidious: The Red Door, playing in theaters now and directed by and starring Patrick Wilson.
In the film, “To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh (Wilson) and a college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before.”
Wilson, who also pulled triple duty singing with Ghost for end credit track “Stay”, spoke with Bloody Disgusting about the scare-crafting on the fifth Insidious entry.
The Red Door‘s jump scares play with sound, often removing the music cues signaling an impending scare altogether and shaking up the familiar pattern. When asked about his approach to crafting scares, Wilson got candid. “I wanted different types of scares and I’ll be honest, some didn’t work out as well as I wanted, usually because of time,” Wilson explains.
He continues, “That’s usually how it happens.

The horror genre — like any other — has its stock characters: the creepy child, the father-on-the-edge, the wise mystic. When done poorly, these archetypes are basically a vehicle for forgettable scream-in-the-dark fun. When done well, they’re flesh-and-blood people you worry about from film to film, hoping that someday their suffering will end — well, at least after a few movies.
The Insidious series — created by Leigh Whannell and James Wan — is the latter. Centered largely around the Lambert family, the films tell the tale of a father and son with a...

The Insidious franchise has been very economical with its storytelling, with four films that have been tethered together and set across seven decades. Each film has tried to do something new, with varying success, but Insidious: The Red Door goes back to where it started, and horror finally comes back home for the Lambert family.
A quick flashback to the events after Insidious Chapter 2 shows that Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Dalton (Ty Simpkins) have undergone hypnotherapy in order to forget the horrors that they experienced, thereby losing a year’s worth of memories. Fast forward 9 years and the Lamberts are at the funeral of Josh’s mother, Loraine and much has changed during that time: Foster and Dalton are joined by a new sister, Callie and as the boys have grown up, Josh and Renai have grown apart and divorced.
Josh has a stilted relationship with the family, especially Dalton.

Sony is probably feeling very glad that they already have the spin-off Thread: An Insidious Tale in the works, with Jeremy Slater writing/directing and Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani attached to star. While examining the film’s success, Deadline revealed that there was a point when the filmmakers were concerned that the movie wasn’t scary enough, so there were reshoots to enhance the jump scares!

Hold onto your lanterns, horror fans, because the Insidious franchise is back with its fifth installment, Insidious: The Red Door. This time, actor Patrick Wilson takes the helm as director, aiming to deliver thrills while delving into the intricate dynamics of the Lambert family. Though it falls slightly short of its predecessors, this film manages to offer a handful of effective scares and characters that may not fully come alive but still contribute to a haunting trip to the movies.

We spent June discussing genderfluid dinosaurs, evil weaves and queer-coded hitchhikers, and we’re kicking off July with a discussion of the Sleepaway Camp of it all in James Wan‘s 2013 sequel Insidious: Chapter 2.
Insidious: Chapter 2 sees Renai (Rose Byrne) and Josh (Patrick Wilson) Lambert recovering from their showdown with evil spirits that possessed their son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) and are ready for their lives to return to normal. However, something still is off with Josh, who — unbeknown to Renai — is possessed by the mysterious entity that followed him out of the Further at the end of the first film. In order to free Josh’s soul and finally defeat the malevolent forces around them, Lorraine Lambert (Barbara Hershey) and her ghost-hunting friends investigate the past to save her family’s future.

If you’re anything like me, you probably haven’t given too much thought to what happened to the Lambert family after the end of 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2. After all, their story seemed to have come to a definitive close, and even the filmmakers didn’t seem to particularly care since they continued the franchise with two prequels. But since horror films are money in the bank even in the post-pandemic theatergoing era, now comes Insidious: The Red Door, which revisits the original characters ten years later. You won’t be surprised to hear that they’re not doing very well.
Well, Renai (Rose Byrne) seems okay, since she had the good sense to divorce Josh (Patrick Wilson, who makes his directorial debut with this purportedly final installment) after he tried to kill her and the children. Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is barely winning an unexpectedly close race with “Insidious: The Red Door” on international box office charts, with each film collecting roughly $31 million over the weekend.
Based on Sunday’s estimates, “Indiana Jones 5” is ever-so-slightly ahead of “Insidious 5” with $31.8 million for Harrison Ford’s swashbuckling adventure and $31.4 million for Sony’s paranormal horror story.
“The Red Door” easily took town “Dial of Destiny” at the domestic box office, with the former earning $32.6 million in its debut. It marked the second-best opening weekend of the franchise behind 2013’s “Insidious: Chapter 2” ($40 million).
Overseas, the newest “Insidious” movie managed to secure the best start for a horror film in pandemic times, as well as the biggest start of the supernatural-horror series in comparable markets. Top markets include Mexico ($5.8 million) the Philippines ($3.7 million) and the U.K. ($2.8 million).

Big summer tentpoles continue to struggle at the domestic box office, where a horror pic took down Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Insidious: The Red Door opened to an estimated $32.7 million to win the July 7-9 weekend, beating out Indy 5, which fell to No. 2 in its sophomore outing with an estimated $26.5 million.
The Red Door overperformed despite weak reviews, scoring the second-best domestic opening of the series behind 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2 ($40.3 million), not adjusted for inflation. Overseas, the movie also did frightfully well, grossing $31.4 million for a global bow of $64.1 million against a reported budget of just $16 million.
Heading into the weekend, prerelease tracking had suggested that the fifth and final Insidious installment, helmed by series star Patrick Wilson in his feature directorial debut, would earn $25 million or more. Screen Gems partnered with Stage 6 Films and Blumhouse on the horror pic, which reteams the original cast,...

Disney’s action-adventure “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” dropped to the No. 2 spot in its second weekend of release, earning $26.5 million from 4,600 North American theaters. It was dethroned by Sony’s horror-thriller “Insidious: The Red Door,” which beat expectations with its $32.6 million debut from 3,188 venues.
Ticket sales for “Indiana Jones,” the fifth and final installment to star Harrison Ford’s swashbuckling adventurer, declined by 56% from its $60 million opening weekend, continuing the theatrical misfortunes for the nearly $300 million-budgeted movie. “Dial of Destiny” added $31.8 million at the international box office, bringing worldwide ticket sales to $247.9 million. It has a long and winding journey to get out of the red, at least in its box office run.
The fifth “Insidious” movie cost just $16 million to make, so it’s already reaping big rewards in its box office run. That improves on the start of its predecessor,...

Sunday Am Writethru after Saturday update: Post Covid, there are a lot of studios that have been able to make horror work at the box office, including Paramount with Smile, Warner Bros with Evil Dead Rise, and Universal with M3GAN and The Black Phone.
But not Sony. Until now.
Red Door is opening to $32.65M this weekend, the second-best start in the Insidious franchise after Chapter 2′s $40.2M, entombing Indiana Jones in second place with a $26.5M second weekend. Red Door also reps the best start in the last two years for a PG-13 horror movie. More pom-poms for Sony: their Marvel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse just outstripped Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 as the highest-grossing movie of the summer, $357.6M to $357.5M.
For Blumhouse, Red Door is its 16th title to open at No. 1. While tentpoles get all the glory in the post-Covid marketplace,...

Indiana Jones has faced Nazis and aliens, snakes and the fury of an Old Testament God — but he has never faced the terrors of the Red Door.
Sony’s “Insidious: The Red Door,” the latest installment in the supernatural series, blew by expectations on its opening day with a $15.2 million gross from 3,188 venues — a figure that includes $5 million in Thursday previews. Horror entries usually face front-loaded weekend performances, but the Screen Gems, Stage 6 Films and Blumhouse co-production has fired off with a commanding lead. It looks to land the top spot on domestic charts for the weekend, projecting a $31 million haul and toppling last week’s victor “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” in the process.
Ho-hum, it’s another unimpeachable box office success story for the horror genre. Studios and exhibitors are still having trouble fully bouncing back after the Covid pandemic shuttered business — this summer’s box...

Insidious: The Red Door scared up a hefty $15 million-plus at the Friday box office — including $5 million in Thursday previews — for a projected $30 million to $33 million opening in North America. The horror pic should now have no trouble scaring off Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and winning the weekend.
Elsewhere, Lionsgate’s R-rated raunchy comedy Joy Ride is stalling in its domestic debut, while the conservative-leaning movie Sound of Freedom continues to set off fireworks after opening on July Fourth.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is falling to No. 2 in its second outing in more bad news for the big-budget tentpole. The pic, from Lucasfilm and Disney, looks to fall 58 percent or more to $25 million to $28 million. That’s the biggest decline of the series.
Insidious: The Red Door is overperforming despite bad reviews. Heading into the weekend, prerelease tracking had suggested that the fifth and final Insidious installment,...

Insidious: The Red Door star-director Patrick Wilson thought he was done with the Insidious franchise, but The Further wasn’t done with him or his character quite yet.
In 2019, Wilson was quietly looking around for an opportunity to make his directorial debut, and when franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell happened to come up with an idea for a fifth Insidious film involving the return of the Lambert family, Wilson’s agent asked Blumhouse if Wilson could direct and star. One thing led to another, and Wilson found himself brainstorming for his first directorial effort in his backyard with screenwriter Scott Teems. But then the global pandemic derailed the entire world and entertainment industry alike, and so Wilson kept busy as an actor until Insidious 5 got back on track.
However, The Further wasn’t far from his mind, as Wilson daydreamed about his future directorial debut while filming Roland Emmerich’s...

“Insidious” is a strange franchise in that it has often been overshadowed by James Wan’s other Patrick Wilson-starring supernatural haunting series (“The Conjuring”). Also, after two installments from Film District and another two from Comcast, “Insidious: The Red Door” comes courtesy of Sony. They are certainly pulling their weight if Thursday previews are any indication.
The Patrick Wilson-directed installment is the first present-tense sequel since “Insidious: Chapter 2” in 2013 as “Chapter 3” in 2015 and “The Last Key” in 2018 were prequels giving a spotlight to Lin Shaye’s ghostbuster. Absence has apparently made the heart grow fonder, as this one nabbed $5 million in Thursday previews. For reference, the last three “Insidious” films earned $5.18 million in Thursday previews *combined*.
The Sony/Screen Gems/Stag 6/Blumhouse entry, set a decade after “Insidious: Chapter 2” and serving as a quasi-legacy sequel for the main haunted Lambert family, pulled a better Thursday figure than...

Sony’s “Insidious: The Red Door” scared up $5 million in Thursday night screenings, a strong start for the moderately-priced horror flick. It was also nearly enough to displace “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which made $5.2 million on the same day. Indy may still top the box office in its second weekend of release, but “Insidious: The Red Door” is proving to be more competitive than some thought. The latest installment in the long-running horror franchise is expected to net $25 million during its debut weekend.
The weekend’s other major new release, Lionsgate and Point Grey’s “Joy Ride,” earned $1.1 million in Thursday previews. The R-rated comedy is expected to generate between $7 million to $9 million in its debut. “Joy Ride” is the feature directing debut of “Crazy Rich Asians” co-screenwriter Adele Lim. It’s the story of four friends who embark on a trip to help one member of...
