“Strange Darling,” the acclaimed horror film from director Jt Mollner, has landed a major U.S. distribution deal at veteran producer Bob Yari’s new company Magenta Light Studios.
Premiering at the genre event Fantastic Fest in 2023, the Miramax-produced thriller has been universally praised (it currently sits at 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with 14 reviews) for its inventive narrative structure and lead performances. Magenta Light has set an August 23 wide release.
“We are thrilled to be bringing nationwide theatrical audiences this unique and exceptional film with terrific performances by Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner. This second feature from talented writer-director Jt Mollner is destined to become a cult classic that defies conventional storytelling,” Yari told Variety.

Exclusive: Sugar23 has signed Charlie Tahan, the actor, writer, and director best known for his breakout starring role on Netflix’s Ozark, for management.
For a refresher, the Emmy-winning Ozark follows the seemingly ordinary financial planner, Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), who becomes entangled in a dangerous world of money laundering and drug cartels. When a scheme goes awry, he’s forced to relocate his family from Chicago to the remote Ozarks in Missouri to launder money for a cartel, working to outmaneuver local criminals, corrupt officials, and his own fractured family dynamics.
Tahan’s character is Wyatt Langmore — cousin of Julia Garner’s Ruth — a member of a local crime family who proves an intelligent and introspective fan favorite, in spite of his troubled upbringing. His work as part of the ensemble earned him three SAG Award nominations between 2019 and 2023.

In The Hunger Games series, Katniss killing President Coin instead of President Snow surprised many. Still, it was because Coin was revealed to be a ruthless leader with her own political interests. President Coin manipulated the rebellion for her own gain, willing to let people die to achieve her goals while portraying herself as a hero against President Snow's cruel government. By killing Coin, Katniss ensured a chance for a peaceful and fair country, avenged her sister's death, and liberated Panem from the fascist government.
The Hunger Games franchise is still an iconic series of books and movies, with the latter truly cementing the property as an international phenomenon. Main character Katniss Everdeen is now well-known as a movie heroine, with her actions throughout the series affording her a level of depth usually not seen in Young Adult fiction. Amid these were some rather dark developments, which culminated in Katniss killing President Coin.

A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes sequel may happen, but Rachel Zegler shouldn't reprise her role as Lucy Gray in the rumored film. Lucy Gray's open-ended fate adds to the appeal of The Hunger Games prequel, and taking that away would be a disservice to her character. Bringing Lucy Gray back in a sequel would be challenging and may not satisfy audiences.
Given the success of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, it's only a matter of time before Lionsgate greenlights a sequel, but the movie shouldn't feature the return of Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird (no matter how great the actress is). The 2023 dystopian action film, directed by Francis Lawrence, is based on Suzanne Collins' 2020 book of the same name and tells the villain origin story of Coriolanus Snow, better known as President Snow in the original Hunger Games trilogy. The adaptation chronicles 18-year-old Snow's rise to power,...

Disney's Bridge To Terabithia came out in 2007 and was based on the children's book of the same name by Katherine Paterson. The story is about two children named Jess and Leslie, who become friends and create an imaginary world called Terabithia to escape life's problems. It's also a story about a child dealing with grief and the loss of their best friend, as the major event of Bridge To Terabithia is when Leslie drowns after going into the woods to Terabithia by herself. Bridge to Terabithia is one of the beloved, classic children's books often taught in schools.

Keanu Reeves appeared in 2005’s superhero horror movie Constantine, directed by Francis Lawrence which was loosely based on the DC Comics/Vertigo Comics Hellblazer graphic novels. The actor portrayed the character of a cynical exorcist in the movie, which also starred Tilda Swinton, Shia Labeouf, Rachel Weisz, and more.
Upon its release, Constantine received mixed reviews from the audience and the critics but over the years managed to attain the status of a cult film. Fans of Keanu Reeves were excited when a sequel was announced back in 2022 and the movie is currently in development but an actor recently revealed, they’d not be returning for the sequel.

Lucy Gray may have influenced fashion in the Capitol, impacting the extravagant outfits seen in the original trilogy. Snow's inability to escape Lucy Gray is highlighted by the fashion evolution in the Capitol. Lucy Gray's disappearance didn't erase her influence, evident in the change in Capitol citizens' attire.
One minuscule detail about Rachel Zegler's Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes suggests she had much more influence on the citizens of Panem than anyone first thought. The 2023 dystopian action film brings Suzanne Collins' 2020 Hunger Games prequel book of the same name to life, with Francis Lawrence, who directed three previous movies in the franchise, returning behind the camera. Collins's words, combined with Lawrence's vision, resulted in an in-depth villain origin story about the original trilogy's primary antagonist and his complex relationship with the first District 12 victor.

Constantine star Tilda Swinton reveals she may not be reprising her role as Gabriel in the upcoming sequel.

Tilda Swinton reveals she is not involved in Constantine 2. Swinton hints at Keanu Reeves potentially playing her role, Gabriel, in the sequel. Swinton's update could also mean that Gabriel is not in the movie whatsoever.

The Hunger Games franchise should focus on exploring other areas beyond a sequel to The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. A potential sequel to The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes lacks source material and could take away from the impact of the prequel. Stories following Haymitch, Finnick, and the fall of District 13 offer more compelling options for the franchise's next installment.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes sequel might not be the best path for the franchise, as there are more captivating stories to be told. The original Hunger Games film came out in 2012, and it followed the story of Katniss Everdeen, a District 12 citizen who volunteered as tribute for the deadly Hunger Games to protect her younger sister. Katniss' story spanned four films, which showed her putting an end to the Games and overthrowing the corrupt President Snow.

The music-video-to-film-director pipeline is a tried and true path for many filmmakers. Anyone who enjoys deep dives on IMDb or falling down a Wikipedia rabbit hole has had the "I had no idea they made that!" moment. Spike Jonze, before gracing the world with Her or Being John Malkovich, turned out pieces for Daft Punk, Weezer, Sonic Youth, and many others. Francis Lawrence, most notable for helming three out of four Hunger Games blockbusters, boasts a massive catalog of music videos — Lady Gaga, The Black Eyed Peas, and even Avril Lavigne's iconic "Sk8er Boi." One can often go back and connect a direct line between the director's early visual style and their present-day, more heavily financed work. In other instances, you'd never make the connection had their name not appeared in the credits below the YouTube video — no one could've guessed that the precursors to Mark Webb's...

Jabberjays are mutant birds created by Dr. Kay in The Capitol for spying, recording conversations, making them an excellent spy tool. Director Francis Lawrence recently proposed a limited series set in the Hunger Games universe. A TV show could explore the First Rebellion, its politics, and its consequences on Panem citizens. A Dark Days TV show would pay off years of setup from the previous movies.
Many expected more The Hunger Games movies following the success of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but a television show focusing on a previously teased storyline might be more likely. This universe began when Suzanne Collins published The Hunger Games in 2008, followed by two more novels and a film adaptation series starting in 2012. Three books and four movies later, The Hunger Games became one of the most popular media franchises ever. Eight years after Mockingjay – Part 2, a prequel film revived fans' desire for additional stories in Panem, meaning more content (like a show) could be coming.

Constantine 2 is slowly becoming a reality with a dedicated team behind it. The project faced challenges due to shifts in direction and creative control. The team now has control of the character and is determined to create a real rated-r version of the film.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has offered an update on the development of the long-awaited DC sequel, Constantine 2. Speaking with Comicbook.com, the producer, who has been behind the likes of Constantine, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and Madame Web, hopes that the Constantine follow-up does happen, as it's such a “great character.”
"I hope it does, because its' a great character. Great in comic books, and it was great making that first movie. It's such an alternative kind of character. It's what really attracted me to Madame Web, was the singularity of the character, that idea that she is going to become blind and that...

The sequel to Constantine remains in development but producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is optimistic that the film will eventually make production headway.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, di Bonaventura shared brief but encouraging news on Constantine 2. the sequel to the 2005 film that divided the Hellblazer fan base but has since gained a cult following. The clamor for the sequel was only fueled by tease updates from director Francis Lawrence, writer Akiva Goldsman, and actor Keanu Reeves, who was very explicit about his desire to reprise John Constantine. Development for the film was making decent headway until it was stalled by the WGA strike last year, and the project has since remained on the back burner when Lawrence and Reeves focused on other priorities.

Peeta would have become the mentor and Haymitch the tribute if Haymitch had been chosen for the 75th Hunger Games instead of Peeta. Haymitch's knowledge of the rebel plan would have made alliances easier for Katniss in the arena. Katniss wouldn't have to worry about Peeta's safety if Haymitch was the male tribute, and the Capitol wouldn't have captured Peeta.
It was either going to be Haymitch Abernathy or Peeta Mellark as the District 12 male tribute for the 75th Hunger Games, aka the Third Quarter Quell, in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and the film would have been a lot different if Haymitch was in the arena instead of Peeta. The 2013 dystopian action movie, directed by Francis Lawrence, is based on Suzanne Collins's book of the same name and is the second installment in the Hunger Games film series. Director Francis Lawrence is hesitant to create more projects in The Hunger Games franchise without author Suzanne Collins' involvement, as he values the thematic relevance that Collins brings to the world. While there are plenty of unexplored periods and events in the Hunger Games world, Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobson will only move forward with Collins' input. The future of the franchise depends on Collins' return to the world, although she currently has no plans to write more Hunger Games novels. However, her experience in television suggests that a new story doesn't necessarily have to start as a novel.
Director Francis Lawrence addresses the uncertain future of The Hunger Games franchise, explaining why the franchise isn't rushing to create new productions despite its recent successes. A potential sequel to "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" could explore the backstory of Mags Flanagan, a character who never speaks in the later films. Fans have speculated that Mags' inability to speak may be a result of post-traumatic stress disorder (Ptsd) from her time in the arena. A sequel to "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" could reveal the reason behind Mags' muteness and delve into the impact of her victory in the 11th Hunger Games.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of the Songbirds and Snakes serves as the first prequel in the Hunger Games film series, but another movie could revolve around Mags Flanagan and explore her backstory (and possibly confirm a popular fan theory regarding her character). The 2023 dystopian film, directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Michael Lesslie and Michael Arndt, is based on Suzanne Collins' 2020 book of the same name.

Clemensia's role in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie is smaller than in the book, with the character not participating in the games or having her snake bite transformation play out on screen. Actor Ashley Liao shares that she would have loved to have been involved in more action scenes as well as Clemensia's snake transformation, but acknowledges that it's a "dense" book. The decision not to include select Clemensia book moments is due to movie adaptations having less room for subplots and supporting characters compared to their book counterparts.

The fate of Clemensia Dovecote, a character in The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, remains uncertain after being attacked by snakes. Actor Ashley Liao hopes she survived. Co-writer Michael Lesslie confirmed that Clemensia died in the film, but her fate is not explicitly shown, leaving room for interpretation. Clemensia's role is significant in the book but diminished in the movie, making her survival plausible. The film's changes have created ambiguity around her character's fate.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes star Ashley Liao offers a hopeful response to Clemensia Dovecote's fate in the prequel film. During the movie, Dr. Gaul (Viola Davis) is experimenting with mutated snakes, which attack the Academy student. While she survives and has a major role to play in the book, this moment leaves her fate uncertain for the rest of the film.

What does it take for a movie adaptation to transcend its source material? Many a filmmaker uses a book as a blueprint (whether or not they read it in its entirety) but take creative license to put their own unique stylistic and/or thematic spin on what is necessarily a much more visual story than the original one on the page. Often that’s taking a key character—whether a comic book antihero or an unnamed book protagonist—and giving them an entirely new backstory or quest. Or choosing a different point of view that opens up new storytelling avenues. In some cases, book and movie follow the same premise but diverge wildly at the end… or they do reach the same narrative conclusion, but on radically different paths that will leave you with very different emotional reactions as a viewer.

Clemensia Dovecote actor Ashley Liao reveals that she would have liked to have seen her character's snake bite transformation from the Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes book in the movie. While the film is broadly faithful to Suzanne Collins' book, various changes were made to streamline the narrative and keep book-readers guessing. The Hunger Games prequel was a box office success and was met with a mostly positive reception from audiences, suggesting that the changes that were made generally worked.

"Hunger Games" fans returned to Panem in 2023 with the release of the prequel "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," about the teen years of future President Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) and his ill-fated romance with folk musician Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler). The movie did well enough at the box office and was mostly praised by critics (/Film's review was more mixed) — but is all that enough for a sequel?
Upon the release of "Ballad" in November 2023, several members of the cast and creative team sat down with People magazine to answer this question. The main takeaway from their answers? It depends on Suzanne Collins, author of "The Hunger Games." For reference, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" is adapted from Collins' eponymous novel (published in 2020), and she's given no indication that she's writing a sequel. Without literary source material, there won't be a film sequel either.

Sam Claflin expresses positive feelings about The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and shows interest in returning to the Hunger Games franchise. Although he doesn't think it's likely, Claflin suggests he could play Finnick's dad in a possible prequel. The decision to continue the franchise depends on Suzanne Collins coming up with a new and compelling thematic premise.
The Hunger Games actor Sam Claflin reveals whether he would return to the franchise for a Finnick Odair prequel. Claflin played the District 4 Hunger Games victor in Catching Fire and both Mockingjay films. As a fan-favorite character whose Games have never been shown, there has been a great deal of interest in a Finnick prequel for quite some time, with the possibility becoming more tangible after author Suzanne Collins' The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes prequel book and its recent film adaptation.

Sam Claflin Is ‘100%’ Open to Returning to ‘The Hunger Games’: ‘I Would Be All in for Finnick’s Dad’
Sam Claflin told Variety that he would be “100%” open to returning to “The Hunger Games” franchise.
Speaking with Marc Malkin during Variety On the Carpet, presented by Directv, Claflin opened up about his reaction to the prequel film “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” and the potential for his widely beloved character Finnick to make an appearance in future “Hunger Games” projects.
Though he is willing to return to the dystopian world of Panem, Claflin fears his age might be a detriment: “I don’t know if there’s room for me to go back. I’m too old now.”
The actor did add, however, “I’ve heard rumors that people are asking for a Finnick prequel, and all I’m gonna say is that I would be all in for Finnick’s dad.”

Stephen King's fantasy novel The Eyes of the Dragon has been optioned multiple times for adaptation, but budgetary concerns have cancelled recent plans for a TV series. The Long Walk, one of King's early novels, has been rumored for adaptation since 1988, but it's now receiving promising updates with Francis Lawrence as director and Lionsgate's involvement. While Stephen King's novel Joyland received offers for adaptation into a series, no official updates have been announced, suggesting it may not be adapted anytime soon.
Stephen King has had dozens of movies and TV shows adapted from his books and short stories, making him the most adapted author alive. He is quickly catching up to the next most prolific author to be adapted, Agatha Christie. However, both are a considerable way off from the all-time most adapted writer, William Shakespeare. Lionsgate's The Hunger Games film series was one of the most successful in the young adult dystopian genre. Adapting Suzanne Collins' book series of the same name, The Hunger Games almost became a $3 billion franchise with 2015's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2. Following the saga's completion, fans wondered whether there would ever be another Hunger Games film. For years, the film franchise was on ice, and audiences began turning their attention towards other films.
With all that being said, nothing was quite able to fill the void that The Hunger Games series had left. In 2020, Suzanne Collins released a new book called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes that served as both a spin-off and prequel to The Hunger Games trilogy. That book has led to the revival of Lionsgate's film franchise, and its huge success has now pushed the franchise past the $3 billion mark. Telling the...

Julianne Moore's decision to star in The Hunger Games franchise was influenced by her daughter's love for the books. Moore initially bought the books for her son, but ended up being captivated by the story herself and saw a potential role for her. Lawrence says this wasn't originally in the script, and confirms little references to the original movies were added throughout the prequel.

Viola Davis as Dr Volumnia Gaul in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Photo Credit: Murray Close Having directed all of the Hunger Games films since the second, Francis Lawrence had a pretty good idea of what he wanted when the prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, was being cast. And one of those things he wanted was Oscar-winner Viola Davis in the role of Dr. Volumnia Gaul. The only thing standing in the way was a request from the author of the Hunger Games book series, Suzanne Collins, but Lawrence told explained they were able to find a creative way around that issue.
