Cannes winner “The Red Turtle” (co-produced by Studio Ghibli) is arguably the most sublime animated Oscar contender. Michael Dudok de Wit, who directed the Academy Award-winning short, “Father and Daughter,” tells a 2D cycle of life story that “uses time to relate the absence of time, like music can enhance silence.”
A man shipwrecked on a lush tropical island inhabited by crabs, turtles and birds tries to escape by building and rebuilding a raft, continually wrecked by a mysterious red turtle, which transforms into a beautiful red-headed woman who becomes his companion and soul mate. Eventually, they have a son together.

★★☆☆☆ Kicking off an animated children's film with a pair of terrified young slaves bound in chains being intimidated by a vicious mutt is unconventional to say the least. However, this is the departure point chosen by the directorial pairing of Rémi Bezançon and Jean-Christophe Lie whose new film, Zarafa (2012), takes as its inspiration the true story of France's first giraffe, building an adventurous story around how the exotic long-necked creature found its new European home.

Hunting and slavery exist amid the poop gags in this French animation
This dubbed French animation has some of the livestock and poop gags common to multiplex fare, but – parents be warned – inserts them into a narrative that flirts with slavery and other abuses. Our young Sudanese hero helps transport the first giraffe to 19th-century France only after another animal has been killed by hunters – and a tricky pocket of racism awaits at court. Directors Remi Bezançon and Jean-Christophe Lie pay close attention to Africa’s landscape and storytelling traditions, but their scholarship manifests in a stiffly self-conscious style, leaving Laurent Perez’s thunderous orchestral score struggling to confer epic status on an otherwise slight diversion. The Kirikou movies were livelier.

I really don't put much stock in the International Animated Film Society's 2013 Annie Awards, which is why I didn't rush to report on their results on Saturday. One year Disney and Pixar boycott the event, feeling there was an unfair advantage paid to larger contributing sponsors, DreamWorks being the primary example. So with such a nasty stench over the event what good does it do to pay it much mind? That said, I'll be brief in mentioning Wreck-It Ralph topped Saturday night's winners with five awards, including Best Animated Picture. The awards have something like a 75% streak when it comes to helping predict the eventual Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature and as the days have gone on, it's looking more and more like Ralph will be this year's winner (see my predictions here). Pixar's Brave, Laika's ParaNorman and DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians each took home two awards in lesser,...

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.
Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.
Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

Which of 2012′s animated films drew the most applause? According to the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, the options include Pixar’s Brave, Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, and DreamWorks’s Rise of the Guardians. Disney withdrew from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010 and even before then it was hard to put much stock in the Annie Awards. Now it's just sort of a blip on the overall award season radar that manages headlines twice a year, once for their nominees and again for their winners, which this year will be announced on Saturday, February 2, 2013. That said, the org announced their 2013 nominees this morning and their Best Feature Film list was made up of eight nominees (a large list considering the lack of quality animated films I've seen this year) including Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Rabbi's Cat and Wreck-It Ralph. It is nice not to see something like The Lorax among that list, but I still think this was a year in which the field could have easily been limited to five nominees.

The animation distributor Gkids, an unexpected heavyweight in last year's Oscar animation race, is qualifying four different films for the Oscars this year. By doing so, they've pushed the animation field over the number required for a full slate of five nominees. Gkids announced on Tuesday that it plans to give Oscar-qualifying runs to Remi Bezancon and Jean-Christophe Lie's "Zarafa," a French hit about the giraffe given to Charles X of France by the Pasha of Eqypt; Joann Sfar and Antoine Delesvaux's "The Rabbi's Cat," a French film set in the 1930s...

Independent distributor GKids has picked up Us distribution rights to the French animated feature Zarafa. Directed by Rémi Bezançon and Jean-Christophe Lie, the 78-minute film is a beautifully hand-drawn work of animation about a 10-year-old named Maki and the orphaned giraffe, Zarafa, who go on an epic adventure from the Sudan, where Maki escapes from slave traders, to Alexandria, Marseille and Paris. The family-friendly film is in French with English subtitles. The film debuted at the Berlinale earlier this year, and has since screened at a number of film festivals. It's a film that's escaped us, so none of us has seen it yet. But that...

It would appear Michel Ocelot and Kirikou no longer have the market cornered when it comes to animated features based on African folk tales and environments. Fellow Frenchmen Remi Bezancon and Jean-Christophe Lie are preparing an African tale of their own with Zarafa, the story of a baby giraffe and the young boy who loves it.France is increasingly taking a leadership role when it comes to international animation and the first teaser for this makes it easy to see why. Three U.S. films are among the seven nominees for best foreign film in this year’s César Awards, France’s version of the Oscars. Meanwhile, American director Quentin Tarantino has been selected to receive an honorary award and will be at the Feb. 25 ceremony in Paris to accept it, it was announced Friday.
The three American films cited by the Académie des arts et techniques du cinema are Christopher Nolan’s “Inception,” David Fincher’s “The Social Network” and Clint Eastwood’s “Invictus,” an Oscar contender in the States last year.
Xavier Beauvois’ “Of Gods and Men” (“Des hommes et des Dieux”) — not one of the nine films still in contention for the best foreign film Oscar — leads with 10 nominations, while Roman Polanski’s “The Ghost Writer” and Joann Sfar’s “Gainsbourg” (“Vie Héroïque”) are also nominated in multiple categories.
Presiding over this year’s awards is American actress and director Jodie Foster.

- With only nine chosen titles, Cannes Short Films competition is probably the most exclusive competitive event at the festival. I can only imagine what the ratio was from submitted pictures to the lucky nine selected. Apart from an offering from New Zealand, this year's batch of short films resembles the dominance and output of European films in all sections of the festival this year. And like what Sundance has been doing for over two decades now, Cannes and The Cannes Cinefondation have lined-up short film offerings from the cinema schools from the four corners of the globe. Look for some form of coverage on our part Live at the festival.
