Some TV shows never fully recover from awful storylines or character decisions. Deb falling in love with her own brother in Dexter was uncomfortable and made little sense. Troy's exit from Community damaged the show irreparably, although the decision did not come from the writers.

Dexter: Debra's fate felt off, as her death didn't align with her character arc. Dallas: Bobby's return in the dream season cheapened the show's realism and high stakes. The Walking Dead: Glenn's survival after the dumpster scene stretched believability.
Some TV plot twists went so far out of left field it appeared as if the creators just made them up on the spot, but they were planned out and aired as intended. Unexpected plot twists can be an exciting and engaging part of the television viewing experience, but when they don’t feel like they align with previously established events, they can leave audiences scratching their heads and wondering if they were even planned that way at all. Rumors about Sony and Marvel‘s Spider-Man 4 continue to swirl, with more whispers caught in the wall-crawler’s web daily. Today, we’re hearing that Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale director Drew Goddard is the top pick to replace Jon Watts if he chooses not to return to the superhero franchise. Word about the studios eyeing Goddard for the gig comes from industry insider Daniel Richtman, whose track record for leaking news is often on point.
Late last month, Spider-Man actor Tom Holland told Collider he feels protective over the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler and would not reprise the role unless a fantastic idea for a sequel presents itself.

After mucking with the Multiverse in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland’s friendly neighborhood wall-crawler has been noticeably absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recent reviews and box office returns suggest the MCU needs rescuing, and fans wonder if Holland’s Peter Parker could swing in and save the day. Speaking with Collider during a recent press conference with the Critics Choice Association, Tom Holland opened up about the possibility of Spider-Man 4 and what it would take to get him to squeeze into the red and blue suit once again.

"Dragged Across Concrete" is a divisive neo-noir cop thriller with a shocking ending. Critics praised Mel Gibson's performance but some called the movie racist and misogynistic. It can be streamed on Netflix or rented/bought on major platforms like Apple TV, Google Play, and more.

Regardless of genre, fans place an enormous amount of expectation on series finales. It's not easy to carry the responsibility of wrapping up any extraneous plot threads and character arcs in a satisfying way for longtime audiences. Even the most acclaimed shows, like "Seinfeld" and "The Sopranos," can have their entire successful run overshadowed by middling or divisive reception to their respective finales. This distinction carries over to horror TV shows, with plenty of notable series marring their celebrated legacies because of the last impressions left by divisive final episodes.
Horror shows often suffer from abrupt cancellations, denying audiences a satisfying amount of closure thanks to anticlimactic endings that don't live up to fan expectations. Even some of the most enduring and iconic horror shows have come to a close with lackluster finales. Here are the most maligned endings that ruined the legacies of TV horror classics by failing to stick the landing.

The Dexter-verse is coming! Hmm…yeah, that sounded weird. Nevertheless, Showtime has confirmed that two new spin-offs from the iconic series have been ordered straight-to-series: Dexter: Origins and the follow-up to Dexter: New Blood. To be honest, the history of Dexter has been quite rocky following season four. The whole, “Deb wants to f**k her brother” angle was just strange, and this is coming from a guy who watches Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. I know Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) and Dexter (Michael C. Hall) aren’t blood related, but it was still creepy. Dexter Was On A High When...

Showtime prevented Dexter's death in the original finale, opting for him to fake his own death instead. The network was clear that they wanted Dexter to live on. The original showrunner had a different plan for the finale, where Dexter would be exposed and punished for his crimes. Showtime's rule made this ending impossible. Dexter: New Blood, the revival series, brought back the magic of Dexter's earlier seasons but gave him a different arc. His death in New Blood felt unnecessary and came too late to have the desired impact.
Showtime's popular series Dexter has a famously hated finale, and many viewers were under the impression that Dexter's death would've been a more fitting end to the show — but there's a frustrating reason it didn't happen that way. The Exorcist: Believer's trailer recently released, following movies like Evil Dead Rise on this continuing trend of rebooting older horror movie franchises with a fresh new sequel. While this new entry into the Exorcist series focuses on the possession of two young girls, the appearance of Ellen Burstyn is a refreshing bit of nostalgia. Burstyn's role in the critically acclaimed The Exorcist from 1973 was that of Chris MacNeil, the mother of Regan, the young girl who falls victim to possession by the demon Pazuzu. The original movie is iconic for its special effects (especially the grotesque demon face of Regan) and scares that were so shocking at the time. Despite all the damage done to her physically and mentally, Regan survived her exorcism and was freed from her demonic possession. While Chris' return in the trailer might indicate that these two young girls have a fighting chance against their demonic possessions,...

The Dexter cast in Dexter: New Blood features a variety of returning and new actors as the vigilante serial killer returns to action. Dexter originally ran on Showtime from 2006 to 2013, following serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) as he hides his secret life from those around him while feeding his murderous urges by hunting down known murderers. As a convenient cover-up for his blood obsession and criminal lifestyle, Dexter worked at Miami Metro Police Department as a blood-spatter analyst alongside his policewoman sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), Detective Angel Batista (David Zayas), and Captain Maria Laguerta (Lauren Vélez).
The original series didn’t see too many recurring characters last very long, and with Dexter back to his usual habits of killing in his new home, many new fan favorites didn’t make it all the way through New Blood. Following the controversy of Dexter’s original season 8 finale, the cast...

Sometimes it’s hard to casually enjoy a television show or movie when there is so much critical analysis and even baggage attached to it. We want to go into something with a clean slate, a fresh canvas to which we can paint our own opinions without the influence of others. There’s perhaps no greater example of this than the final season of the megahit Showtime series Dexter.
Running from 2006 to 2013, this Michael C. Hall vehicle went toe to toe with other prestige dramas of the era like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, and more and still carved out a deservedly large audience. Dexter Morgan was an antihero unlike any of the others, a serial killer who was actually highly relatable as a father, a husband, and human being who desperately wanted to fit in with society much more than he had ever originally imagined.

No TV show has truly had a series finale as long as the network or streaming service can produce a revival. TV sitcoms like Full House, Saved by the Bell, and Will & Grace returned. Dramas have reunited their casts, or at least passed the torch to the next generation. Here are six of the best TV drama revivals of the last decade.
Raymond Lee and Caitlin Bassett | Ron Batzdorff/NBC ‘Dallas’ revived the TV drama until real-life tragedy occurred
TNT brought back the hit drama Dallas with original cast members Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, and Linda Gray as the original Ewings. Jesse Metcalfe, Josh Henderson, Jordana Brewster, Julie Gonzalo, and Emma Bell played the new generation battling over the family oil business.
Unfortunately, Hagman died while filming the second season. The show quickly adjusted existing footage to explain J.R. Ewing’s off screen death, but the show could never recover.

Showtime’s hit television series Dexter went on for eight seasons, but it should’ve ended with season 5. Based on a series of novels by Jeff Lindsay, Dexter follows Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), who works for the police department by day and murders serial killers by night. As someone in both worlds, Dexter is constantly wrestling with his Dark Passenger, urging him to kill. Dexter justifies the murders in his mind because he is murdering bad people, which in turn, encourages the viewers to root for him.

Due to his involvement in the Trinity Killer case, Dexter blames himself for getting his wife killed and spontaneously exposing his son Harrison to horrific violence at such a young age. When the original Dexter concluded in 2013 with the titular character relocated to the Pacific Northwest, many viewers didn’t like the way the crime drama ended.
When the series returned eight years later, the final episode was equally as disappointing. If a certain showrunner had had his way, Dexter fans would have been treated to a far more satisfying conclusion, and Dexter: New Blood would not have happened at all.

Showtime’s taking a deep dive into the world of Dexter, the serial killer who kills serial killers, with an origin series and more of Dexter: New Blood. The origin story, currently titled Dexter: Origins but that may change, will examine Dexter Morgan’s backstory.
Per Showtime: “Dexter: Origins will dramatize young Dexter Morgan at the outset of his transition into the avenging serial killer he would become. Set in the Miami that was a hotbed of real serial killers of his time, the show will begin as Dexter graduates college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of many of the characters we came to know in the original Dexter. And, of course, the show will also focus on Dexter’s family, including a very-much-alive Harry and a very formidable, teenage Deb.”

The series will see him graduate college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of various “Dexter” characters, while also depicting his family, including an alive Harry (James Remar in the original series) and a formidable teenage Deb (Jennifer Carpenter in the original series).

Dexter: New Blood season 2 is no longer moving forward at Showtime. The sequel series to the original hit drama Dexter premiered on Showtime in 2021 and aired ten episodes. The series starred returning Dexter actor Michael C. Hall as the titular serial killer and brought on Jack Alcott as his son, Harrison. The series also featured Julia Jones, Johnny Sequoyah, Alano Miller, Clancy Brown, Jennifer Carpenter, and David Magidoff in important recurring roles. The original Dexter series followed the titular serial killer as he spent his days solving various crimes while committing horrendous crimes off the clock.
According to a new report from TV Line, Dexter: New Blood season 2 has been cancelled at Showtime, but it is not the end for the franchise. In the announcement, it was confirmed that Showtime is focusing on the development of a Dexter prequel series. The news comes in the days following the announcement of...

Dexter Morgan kills criminals whom he believes should be punished, and the Dexter protagonist is best classified as a psychopath instead of a sociopath. Dexter is familiar with blood patterns as part of his day job at the Miami Metro Police Department and lives two lifestyles, one of which involves violence, murder, and secrecy. The 2000s Showtime drama was so successful it led to the 2021 spin-off miniseries Dexter: New Blood. In both iterations of the story, the character displays tendencies that suggest that he can fall into one of these two categories, as it feels impossible for him to stop killing.
Dexter follows his dad's code of behavior, which is how he is able to maintain a regular life. Questions surrounding whether the Dexter character has emotions or is able to fall in love with someone are persistent throughout all eight seasons of the series along with the spin-off, as...

If Dexter season 10 is ordered by Showtime, the original character Lumen (Julia Stiles) can make a key appearance. The 2021 reboot Dexter: New Blood brought back several characters and actors from the original eight-season series, including Michael C. Hall as the title serial killer, Jennifer Carpenter as Debra Morgan, and David Zayas as Angel Batista. Dexter’s son Harrison Morgan was portrayed as a teenager by Jack Alcott, with numerous original Dexter characters like Maria Laguerta, Hannah McKay, James Doakes, Frank Lundy, Harry Morgan, Rita Morgan, Masuka, and Joey Quinn being referenced or seen in flashbacks.
However, Dexter season 9 still failed to mention or bring back a few key living characters, such as the Bay Harbor Butcher’s one-time accomplice Lumen Pierce. While she only appeared in Dexter season 5, Lumen was an important character in Dexter Morgan’s arc after he saved her from her torturers and aided her vengeance by murdering them.

Towards the end of its original eight-season run, the much-loved thriller series Dexter took a turn for the worse. The conclusion to the story of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), the vigilante serial killer struggling between the urges of his "Dark Passenger" and "Harry's Code" of ethics, was unfortunately rushed and unsatisfying. Dexter ended up escaping justice for his crimes as the Bay Harbor Butcher, while his son and girlfriend escaped together in another direction. Additionally, the finale included an unsatisfying death for Dexter's adopted sister, Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) after Dexter mercifully turned off her life-support. Yet a big reason why the ending was so unsatisfying can actually be traced back to several seasons before Dexter's finale when the show made its first major mistake.
Dexter's season 4 saw the death of Special Agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine), a plot point that secretly marked the beginning of the show's slow downfall.

The trajectory of Dexter was taken wildly off course by two major kills, proving that Dexter: New Blood was necessary to put the serial killer's ending back on track. Dexter season 8 is in the hall of fame for controversial TV show endings, with many viewers blaming the lack of closure as a big reason behind its failure. Nearly 10 years later, Showtime released the follow-up series Dexter: New Blood, which checked in with Michael C. Hall's titular serial killer following his move to a small town in upstate New York.
The 10-episode sequel series did what it set out to do, properly ending Dexter Morgan's arc and passing the torch to his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott). Dexter had particularly gone wrong when it killed off two major characters — James Doakes (Erik King) and Maria Laguerta (Lauren Vélez) — leading the Bay Harbor Butcher case to be left wide open at...

"Dexter" is a show with a history almost as tumultuous as that of its titular antihero. The gory crime drama follows Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a blood spatter analyst by day and vigilante serial killer by night. Season 1 of the Showtime drama debuted in 2006 to positive reviews and reigned as the premium channel's highest-rated series for the next four years. Seasons 2 and 4 are widely regarded as the show's best, with the latter boasting a fantastic performance by John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer, one of TV's most terrifying villains. After the departure of showrunner Clyde Phillips, "Dexter" began a downward slide that ran all the way up to its disappointing series finale, frequently remembered as one of the worst of all time. Eight years after Dexter drove his boat into the eye of a hurricane, the serial killer with a heart of gold returned in "Dexter: New Blood," a...

Despite her twenty-year acting career, Jennifer Carpenter is most recognizable as Debra Morgan from the Showtime series Dexter. The show allowed Carpenter to display her wide range of flexibility from a hard-nosed police officer to a sarcastic and loving sister, all of which carried over to subsequent projects. While the role has been her most acclaimed to date, Carpenter has had success in both film and television since Dexter ended in 2013.
Before receiving the part that would land her a Saturn Award, Jennifer Carpenter starred in both The Exorcism of Emily Rose and White Chicks. Both films went on to achieve cult classic notoriety. Carpenter's dark performance as Emily Rose may have well-prepared her for the dismal content of Dexter, while the comedic lightheartedness of the Wayans Bros' White Chicks could have laid the groundwork for the nuance within Debra Morgan's character.

Director Scott Derrickson is known for jumping around different genre sandboxes. His work ranges from science fiction ("The Day the Earth Stood Still") to Marvel superheroes ("Doctor Strange"), but arguably his most effective films are those that exist within the horror sphere. After all, Derrickson's latest film, "The Black Phone," is one of 2022's biggest hits. Even though it's been well over a decade since I last saw "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," I find it difficult to shake Jennifer Carpenter's haunting performance.
If there's one film of Derrickson that gives me the creeps more than the others, it undoubtedly has to be "Sinister," which just celebrated its 10th anniversary. It's the kind of horror movie that you can't quite shake from your memory. Even a scientific test deemed "Sinister" the scariest movie ever made.

Over the years, some female characters have caused an unusual amount of ire in their respective fandoms; rarely is it justified.
We tend to see an unnecessary amount of vitriol getting spewed on characters who are mainly there to act as a foil or cause conflict to the male hero.
The amount a woman gets hated on is often related to how much the fans adore the male characters. In other cases, she might be too flawed, too perfect, or even just exist while being a woman. And let's not forget old-fashioned racism!
Here we'll look at some female characters who have incensed large populations of their show's fandoms and argue about whether it was deserved (Spoiler Alert: It probably wasn't).
Note: Sometimes, the hatred crosses over to the actress playing the hated character, and you can read about some of those here.

Exclusive: New Regency and Tko Studios are developing a television series based on graphic novel The Banks, created by Roxane Gay and artist Ming Doyle. Gay is set to pen the adaptation, which stems from the exclusive development and production partnership New Regency and Tko Studios entered last year.
The Banks focuses on the women of the Banks family who are the most successful thieves in Chicago. During the heist of a lifetime, they must band together to avenge a loved one taken too soon.
Gay is the author of the books “Ayiti,” “An Untamed State,” the New York Times bestselling “Bad Feminist,” the nationally bestselling “Difficult Women,” and the New York Times bestselling “Hunger.” She is also the author of “World of Wakanda” for Marvel. She is repped by WME, Massie&McQuilkin and Lev Ginsburg.

The phrase “water-cooler TV show” may have already sounded old fashioned long before workers began fleeing their offices in the early days of the pandemic, but the meaning of the term remains alive and well with countless fans discussing, debating, arguing about and bonding over their favorite shows online. Rather than gathering around the break room vending machine to chat about the previous night’s shocking twists, social media is the new meeting place where fan theories are traded back and forth. The problem is, it’s hard to go into serious detail or capture the true essence of a complex TV show in a measly 280-character tweet.
Perhaps that’s why TV podcasts have become so wildly popular over the past few years. Instead of boiling down an emotionally devastating episode of “Mare of Easttown” or a mind-bending hour of “Squid Game” in a handful of words, a well-produced...

This article contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood.
Regardless of what some fans and critics thought about Showtime’s Dexter revival, Dexter: New Blood has officially become the network’s most-watched series of all time. The show’s 10-episode run averaged around 8 million viewers a week. That’s more than Showtime’s previous signature series, Homeland, and the 3 million viewers that watched the Dexter: New Blood finale helped the revival overcome Homeland season 3’s finale in 2013 to become the most watched season finale on the network. Further, two million of those viewers came from streaming and on-demand platforms, setting another new record for Showtime.
“We’re thrilled by the overwhelming response from the millions of fans of Dexter: New Blood these past 10 weeks,” said the entertainment president of Showtime Networks, Gary Levine. “Whether they loved the finale or couldn’t bear to see it end, we so appreciate their passion.

With the conclusion of Dexter: New Blood Season 1, fans are going through the motions.
The original series finale got everything wrong, and despite some big flaws, Dexter: New Blood Season 1 Episode 10 was a more satisfactory conclusion.
Still, there are questions about whether the show could go on.
If you watch Dexter: New Blood online, you know the finale killed off Michael C. Hall's titular character at the hands of his son Harrison.
Harrison ultimately evaded justice as Angela Bishop showed up to give him money to escape town and start a new life.
There have long been theories that the show could continue without Dexter at the wheel of the story, and all eyes are on a potential second season or sequel series with Harrison.
"As you can imagine, that’s not the first time I’ve been asked that," showrunner Clyde Phillips explained to TV Line of a potential new season.

Dexter has passed the point of no return.
Dexter: New Blood Season 1 Episode 9 has managed to push the envelope of the sick, twisted, macabre world of serial killers, and -- surprise! -- nobody comes off well.
Whatever happens next, Dexter has no one to blame but himself.
You can do the right thing for the wrong reasons.
Dexter loves his son. That's fine -- it's great, in fact -- but unfortunately, that does not translate to him doing what is best for Harrison.
We saw the "Deb" side of Dexter finally lose the battle. Jennifer Carpenter was absolutely gut-wrenching here. Her agony is so acute, and her intimacy with Hall's Dexter only hammered home how devastating Dexter's decision was.
There were fucking alternatives, Dexter! Therapy! Institutionalization! Prison might have been better.

Dexter: New Blood Season 1 Episode 6 was an hour of nail-biting suspense, subverted expectations, and great character moments.
Secrets have been discovered, but who else will learn about them?
Angela wasted no time confronting Dexter about his identity. Julia Jones and Michael C. Hall played this perfectly. While she was angry and disgusted at his lies and his treatment of Harrison, he was just trying to navigate how much information to impart to appear vulnerable.

“Dexter: New Blood” staged a reunion (of sorts) in the December 5 episode when Dexter’s new girlfriend, Iron Lake Chief of Police Angela Bishop (Julia Jones), met his old coworker, Miami Metro Captain Angel Batista (David Zayas). The last time viewers saw Batista was in the 2013 series finale, when Dexter (Michael C. Hall) drove his boat into a hurricane and made everyone believe he and his son Harrison had died. Zayas now reveals he had “mixed feelings” about that controversial ending, telling EW, “I felt it might’ve been a little underwhelming.”

A decade after Dexter Morgan sailed off into the sunset storm, he’s back and ready for some new blood. Showtime officially greenlit a “Dexter” revival in October 2020, with the premiere date taking place on November 7, 2021. Michael C. Hall is back, of course, as the adorably geeky Bay Harbor Butcher, aka the Miami, Fl blood splatter analyst/serial killer who focuses his bloodlust on murdering other serial killers.
