Ramy Youssef may have made SNL history as the first Arab Egyptian named Ramy to ever host the sketch show, but the episode’s Nielsen ratings weren’t quite as historic.
Youssef, a standup comedian, actor and director, was joined by musical guest Travis Scott for the March 30, 2024 episode of Saturday Night Live. It averaged 3,892,000 total viewers and 803,000 P18-49 viewers, per live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen.
Out of the 15 SNL episodes that have aired this season to-date, the March 30 episode comes in at No. 13 overall in total viewers, and is -16% from the most-recent SNL episode (hosted by Josh Brolin on March 9, 2024). It’s also the smallest total linear SNL audience since Dec. 2, 2023 episode hosted by Emma Stone.
SNL’s 803,000 P18-49 viewer live-plus-same-day average on March 30 also ranks No. 13 out of the show’s 15 episodes this season to-date.

This weekend, Ramy Youssef became the first Egyptian named Ramy from New Jersey to ever host Saturday Night Live, and one of the night’s highlight sketches took aim at a beloved cultural mainstay: NPR’s Tiny Desk concerts.
The sketch featured Youssef as the leader of a band that gets to “quirk it up” on Tiny Desk, even having their cellist (Chloe Troast) playing a milk carton as a shaker for the occasion. As they begin performing, though, they are interrupted by Bowen Yang (playing a 35-year-old intern who attends “Suny Newark”), who asks them to “keep the ruckus down” because “some of us are working.”
The band, confused that their booking to play Bob Boilen’s iconic desk at the NPR office has gone awry, tries to continue, but is again interrupted by Yang’s character (who is on an “important Zoom” with “Glass and Gross” in the...

Ramy Youssef hosted “Saturday Night Live” this weekend and left little unturned in his opening monologue. Impressively, the comedian and actor was able to joke about everything from being Muslim in a Donald Trump-enthused upstate New York, working the Joe Biden campaign and nominating a trans woman for president.
“Like, imagine her speech. It would be so inspiring,” he joked. “She would be like, ‘A lot of politicians talk about change’ — like, you can see the bumper sticker, right? ‘Real change,'” he said.
Youssef kicked things off by explaining that we are experiencing an “incredibly spiritual weekend” that includes Ramadan, Easter and the release of Beyoncé’s new album. “There are just so many religions celebrating at once,” he said.
From there, he shared that he’d recently performed in upstate New York, and while exploring the area where he performed, he noticed “all this Trump stuff — flags,...

While making his hosting debut on Saturday Night Live this weekend, Ramy Youssef prayed for God to free the people of Palestine and all of the hostages taken in the Israel-Hamas War. “I’m out of ideas. All I have are prayers. That’s all I can do right now,” Youssef explained. “And in my friend group, I’m one of the only guys who prays. I’m friends with a lot of sinners, like, just disgusting people. And they call me when they’re in trouble because they want me to pray for them.” The Poor Things actor went on to explain that he recently had two friends call and ask him to pray for them, but for drastically different reasons. One friend has been in court with ex-girlfriend for the last 10 months fighting over who gets to keep their dog, Mr. Bojangles, and his other friend has family in Gaza who are suffering.

In tonight’s SNL sketch centered on the trio known as Please Don’t Destroy — John Higgins, Ben Marshall and Martin Herlihy — host Ramy Youssef stops by their writers’ room at 10:16 p.m., proposing “A Night Out with Travis.”
“Yo dudes, what’s up?” he says. “You won’t believe this, but I was just with Travis Scott and he wants to take us out tonight. Dude, we’re going to have a twisted, rockin’ ball with Travis Scott, man.”
“A what?” asks Herlihy.
“Like a twisted…um, why don’t we just go?” Youssef replies.
In a limo later that night, the guys begin to rap. The lyrics are as follows, in bold:
John Higgins: On our way to the function, we smokin’ blunts and feeling so alive, all the honeys looking scrumptious.
Ben Marshall: Ain’t that something? My haters done in, I’m with...

Ramy Youssef riffed on politics and religious holidays during his Saturday Night Live monologue, saying a trans woman should be the next president and later calling for the people of Palestine and the hostages to be freed.
Youssef, the creator and star of Hulu’s Ramy who recently appeared in the Oscar-winning film Poor Things, hit studio 8H on Saturday for his first stint hosting NBC’s sketch show.
He started his monologue by noting that “this is an incredibly spiritual weekend. We’re in the holy month of Ramadan, tomorrow is Easter and yesterday Beyoncé released a new album. There’s just so many religions celebrating all at once.”
Youssef, who is Muslim, noted that he’s “doing the Ramadan one.”
“I love Ramadan because I love hanging out with Muslims,” he said. “We’re so loving and I feel like people don’t know that about us. They know all these other things.

Ramy Youssef searches for his own superlative in this week’s Saturday Night Live trailer, struggling to find a diversity “first-ever” that hasn’t yet been taken.
“I’m Ramy Youssef, and I’m honored to be the first-ever Arab host of Saturday Night Live,” the comedian says at the trailer’s start, before castmember Kenan Thompson interrupts: “You’re actually not the first [Arab] to host.”
Dissuaded, Youssef tries again: “I’m thrilled to be the first-ever Egyptian host of Saturday Night Live.”
Again, Thompson tells him he’s incorrect. At this, Youssef tries to go specific: “I am thrilled to be the first-ever Egyptian host named Ramy to host Saturday Night Live.”
Again, Thompson tells Youssef he is still incorrect, citing past SNL host Rami Malek.
Youssef then embarks on a monologue of self-reflection: “Whatever, man. Whatever,” he said. “Who cares about being first — it’s dumb. Anyway, it...

Standup comedian, actor and Golden Globe winner Ramy Youssef is hosting SNL for the first time this weekend, and in a just-released promo featuring Kenan Thompson, the star of Hulu’s Ramy explains why he’s so honored to host the iconic sketch series.
The promo begins with Youssef explaining how he’s “honored to be the first-ever Arab host of SNL,” but then Thompson cuts him off and tells him that he’s actually not the first Arab host.
Youssef starts again and says he’s honored to be the show’s “first-ever Egyptian host” before Thompson corrects him once again, telling him he’s “not that, either.”
When Youssef tries a third time, claiming to be SNL’s “first-ever Egyptian host named Ramy,” Thompson finally reminds him that Oscar winner Rami Malek previously hosted the show (October 2021).
Youssef is unimpressed, saying, “Who cares? Being first [is] dumb anyway.

The canon of Ilana Glazer-led indies about childbearing expands. Following 2021’s “False Positive,” Glazer plays pregnant once again in “Babes,” this time from a film script she wrote with Josh Rabinowitz in Pamela Adlon’s feature directorial debut. The Neon comedy follows Eden (Glazer), who gets pregnant from a one-night stand and seeks help from Dawn (Michelle Buteau), a married mother of two. In other words, “Babes” lets the “Broad City” star do what she does best: lean heavily on the support of a best buddy.

In stand-up comedy, silence typically equals death. You tell a joke and the audience laughs? Great. You tell a joke and they groan? Well, at least they were interested enough to respond. Tell a joke and … nothing? You may have lost the room altogether.

Zainab Johnson has filmed her first original comedy special.
The actress and stand-up recently taped the solo debut, Zainab Johnson: Hijabs Off, and it will start streaming on Prime Video this fall. The Oct. 24 premiere date is fortuitous for both Johnson and the streamer, as it follows the third-season premiere of her series (Upload) by only four days.
Hijabs Off finds Johnson leaning on her unique identity — namely growing up a Black Muslim woman in a Harlem house where she was one of 13 children. Johnson has been a working stand-up for years. She competed on late NBC reality show Last Comic Standing, appeared in HBO’s All Def Comedy and has performed on Late Night with Seth Meyers, in addition to her regular club work.
In addition to her series regular role on Upload, Johnson’s acting resume includes Ramy, A Black Lady Sketch Show, American Koko and Private Practice.

During a panel discussion on faith and comedy at the Just For Laughs festival on Saturday, Ramy Youssef talked about his father foretelling the Hollywood actors strike when offering early career advice.
Youssef, who portrays his Muslim faith with both devotion and defiance in his Hulu series Ramy, told the comedy festival audience about his Egyptian-born father discouraging him early on from becoming an artist and entertainer because he’d have to provide for his family one day. “He was always like, ‘This is a beautiful hobby for you to have. Grow the hobby.’ But I remember him clearly saying, ‘One day, real life is going to start,’” he recounted.
The current industry shutdown as Hollywood actors on picket lines seek fair pay, including residuals from streamers, has that warning from his traditional accountant father ringing in his head. “Now we’re in the strike, and, well, here it is!

Fox Searchlight had been planning to give the “female Frankenstein” story Poor Things, which stars Emma Stone (Cruella), a theatrical release on September 8th – but that plan has changed. While the film is still scheduled to have its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August, The Wrap reports that the proper theatrical release has been pushed back to December 8th. So now we have an extra three months to wait for this one.
Scripted by Tony McNamara and based on a novel by Alasdair Gray (pick up a copy Here), the film is described as being the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn, a slick and debauched lawyer,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 2 of “The Bear,” now streaming on Hulu.
Though production on Season 2 of “The Bear” was well underway before Ramy Youssef traveled to Copenhagen to direct the fourth episode, series creator Chris Storer was slow to bring him fully behind the curtain.
“He didn’t let me watch anything they had shot [in the first three episodes]. He was like, ‘No, no. You can see it when you come back, but just make this what you think it should be,'” Youssef remembers.
Youssef is the first and only person to serve as a director on “The Bear” besides Storer and his co-showrunner Joanna Calo. When a tight production timeline made it impossible for Storer or Calo to direct in Copenhagen on top of nine Chicago-set episodes, Youssef was Storer’s first choice. Storer has been a director and executive producer on Youssef’s Hulu series “Ramy” since its 2019 debut,...

Compliments to the chef!
Hulu has revealed premiere viewership details for The Bear Season 2, and the series has cooked up some solid numbers for the streaming service.
FX revealed Tuesday that the Jeremy Allen White drama surged 70% in total hours streamed over the first season after the first four days of viewing.
Additionally, the Season 2 bow was the most-watched premiere of any FX series on Hulu.
Unfortunately, FX and Hulu don't typically reveal raw viewership statistics, but the way the numbers are spinned certainly sounds impressive.
There were many concerns that the show would be wasted by premiering all episodes at once, but it seems the show is off to a great start.
Far too often, binge-release shows dominate the competition for about a week, but there's a good chance The Bear will showcase some staying power.

“The Bear” Season 2 has become FX’s biggest premiere on Hulu ever, according to the Disney-owned brands. After debuting all 10 episodes June 22 on the streaming platform, FX reported a 70% increase in total hours streamed compared to Season 1 over a four-day period.
Hulu and FX did not provide specific viewership data to back the claim, a common practice for shows on streaming services.
The first season of the buzzy Chicago-set dramedy, which premiered June 22, 2022, consisted of eight episodes while Season 2 has 10. Both installments made all the episodes available to stream at once.

Yes, chef. Things are heating up for Season 2 of FX’s The Bear on Hulu.
The entire second season of the half-hour dramedy launched on the streamer Thursday. Since then, the Season 2 debut has become the most-watched premiere of any FX series on Hulu.
The Bear has also posted significant gains versus last season, with a 70% increase in total hours streamed over the first season after the first four days of viewing. Season 1 marked the most-watched single season of a comedy series in FX history, and Season 2 now seems poised to break that record.

R.E.M. has teamed up with “The Bear” on a full-length music video for “Strange Currencies (Remix).”
The four-minute video combines footage from “Road Movie,” which documents the alternative rock band’s 1995 tour, with exclusive clips and behind-the-scenes footage of the FX series’ second season, which premiered June 22 on Hulu.
Released as the third single on the album “Monster” in 1995, “Strange Currencies” follows a lovelorn protagonist who yearns to win over a mysterious crush. The song was a Top 10 hit in the UK, a Top 20 hit in Canada, and peaked at No. 8 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart.
The remix, which was featured prominently in the official Season 2 trailer on May 15, first appeared on 2019’s “Monster (25th Anniversary Edition),” where the band’s longtime producer Scott Litt revisited the best-selling 1994 album, offering a fresh perspective on each track.

Before patrons of The Original Beef of Chicagoland ever get their delicious sandwiches from chef Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) on FX’s The Bear, they have to go through manager Richie Jerimovich—an irritable clodhopper who’s both aggravating and engaging all at the same time. He’s played with affection and reverence by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, the blue-eyed breakout best known for his stints on Girls (as Marnie’s husband Desi) and The Punisher. Here, Moss-Bachrach talks about making it big on the comedy series from executive producer Christopher Storer (Ramy).

Are you not entertained? Because Ridley Scott is returning to his place of highest success, the film that has won more awards than any other he has made in his over four-decade-long career. "Gladiator" picked up five Oscars the year after its release, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, and it has since been regarded as one of the best movies of its genre and the 2000s. Incidentally, a follow-up has been in the making, in some form or another, for over two decades now.
But the shape of the as-yet-untitled "Gladiator 2" has changed considerably. As it now stands, the sequel is going to follow Lucius Verus, the young boy from "Gladiator" who inadvertently told his conniving, regicidal uncle Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) of the plot to topple him. Though Lucius bore the name of his alleged real-life co-emperor father, he will be revealed as the son...

Gleefully crude, oddly charming, and kind of all over the place, Bupkis is a fictionalized depiction of Pete Davidson’s life, a la Curb Your Enthusiasm, Louie, and Ramy, where autobiographical drama often merges seamlessly with surreal flights of fantasy. While there’s a loose continuity between episodes of Bupkis, this is a formally playful series that jumps around in time, tone, and genre from one episode to the next.
One early episode flashes back to a wedding from Davidson’s childhood where young Pete (Preston James Brodrick) gets a few life lessons from his favorite uncle (a magnetically macho Bobby Cannavale). Back in the present day, the adult Pete gets a moonlit dance number of his own after he smokes an undetermined substance procured at a Canadian bowling alley. Another episode morphs into a full-blown action flick when Davidson finds himself whisked away into a Fast and Furious-style car...

Shudder has acquired “Bad Things” ahead of the thriller’s debut at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. The film is written and directed by Stewart Thorndike, best known for “Lyle,” and tells the story of a group of friends whose trip to a snowy resort for a weekend getaway devolves in a psychological tailspin and ends in a bloody nightmare.
“With ‘Bad Things,’ I wanted to create a world of women and non-binary people who shake off polite conditionings and finally roar,” Thorndike said in a statement. “Where are all the female Travis Bickles and Jack Torrances? ‘Bad Things’ answers that.” She went on to say that “at the heart of ‘Bad Things’ is a dark celebration of motherhood and all its splendid viscera. Shudder was the perfect partner for this tale of female rage.”

Last winter, Steve Martin received his first Golden Globe nomination in a quarter century as one of the stars of the Hulu comedy series “Only Murders in the Building.” Just like his five preceding film acting bids, however, this one was unsuccessful, as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided instead to give Jason Sudeikis a second consecutive Best TV Comedy Actor award for “Ted Lasso.” Now that the current Golden Globe eligibility window is closing and Sudeikis is essentially out of the picture, Martin is, according to Gold Derby, the odds-on favorite in his category. On “Only Murders in the Building,” Martin plays the role of Charles-Haden Savage, a reclusive actor who teams up with his neighbors to solve untimely deaths that occur within his New York City apartment building. Included among his most serious challengers in this year...

“A bad plan is better than no plan at all.” This is a line that pops up at various points during “Black Adam,” and while it’s meant to be a whimsical comment regarding the task at hand, by its second repetition it starts to feel like the movie apologizing for itself and its muddled storytelling.
That task is the capture of an exceedingly powerful ancient metahuman known as Teth Adam (Dwayne Johnson), and despite the movie’s best efforts to jazz up the increasingly predictable superhero genre — this one doesn’t care if he kills people — “Black Adam” feels like both too much and not enough, and none of its narrative gambits are helped by a sludgy visual style that’s either distractingly artificial or dispiritingly gloomy, except when it manages to be both.

Ramy Youssef may not be the same person as the titular character in his Hulu series Ramy, but the Golden Globe-winning, multi-Emmy-nominated creator and star certainly relates to the New Jersey Millennial Arab-American man at the heart of his show.

There are a lot of words to describe Hulu’s “Ramy,” but creator Ramy Youssef has a favorite: Naked.
Youssef stars in the Hulu comedy about a wayward Egyptian-American millennial, which often sits in the discomfort of his self involvement, his mistakes, and the consequences of his actions.
“Some people call it cringey, but I think I call it naked,” Youssef told IndieWire over the phone on the heels of Season 3’s Hulu premiere. “There’s just this nakedness that I really enjoy where I’m not trying to fabricate, I’m not trying to be someone who’s just going for shock value.”
The shock is still there — when Ramy helps a friend masturbate, accidentally kills a dog, or cheats on his fiancee with his cousin — but it serves a purpose.

Prior to reviewing the new installment in the long-running (35 years!) Hellraiser horror movie franchise, I did my due diligence. I rewatched all 10 prior films, from the acclaimed 1987 original and its 1988 sequel through the ensuing two theatrical and six direct-to-video entries. Throughout the marathon, I took copious notes, careful to track the characters and plot developments through their many permutations.
Nah, just kidding!
Sure, I saw the first two films back in the day, and may even possibly have caught 1992’s Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth and 1996’s Hellraiser IV: Bloodline. But by the time the series went straight to home video, I happily bailed out, not being the type to proudly possess a treasure trove of horror movie memorabilia in my basement. So for all you Hellraiser aficionados out there, apologies.

A wayward and callous Ramy (Ramy Youssef), after cheating on his new wife, Zainab (MaameYaa Boafo), with his cousin; thereby inflicting untold damage on everyone in his wake, sits in a car with a dog of an incarcerated friend in the backseat. Cans of dog food are piled in the windshield. He listens silently to a CD explaining how to be a good Muslim. That ending to “Ramy” season two was akin to a firecracker exploding in your hand.

Spoilers Ahead: Please do not continue reading if you haven’t watched season 3 of “Ramy”.
“Ramy”, the semi-autobiographical dramedy from Ramy Youssef, just released its third season on Hulu Friday, and similarly to the last, it’s chock full of guests stars. In addition to the show’s series regulars, “Ramy” sees the likes of Majid Jordan, Sarita Choudhury and Bella Hadid joining the cast for the show’s long-awaited third season.
The supermodel makes her acting debut in episode 4, which is aptly titled, “that’s what she said.” Hadid, who has been outspoken about her Palestinian heritage, and her ties to Islamic culture, appears as Lena, the quirky, Muslim girlfriend of Steve (Steve Way), Ramy’s best friend.
As viewers remember from previous seasons, Steve suffers from muscular dystrophy and is wheelchair-bound. Ramy goes to dinner with Steve and Lena, not just because he’s their ride to a wrestling match later,...

Today, Hulu debuted the third season of Ramy, the wonderful dramedy co-created by and starring comedian Ramy Youssef as a Muslim-American man struggling to reconcile his faith with his fondness for forbidden activities like sex, porn, and drugs. It’s been two and a half years since we last saw Ramy, but Youssef was not exactly idle during the long pandemic hiatus. In addition to writing or co-writing all 10 episodes of the new season and directing most of them, he co-created a whole other series about being young, reckless, and...

The beautiful and iconic city of Paris, France is well-known for art, fashion and culture, but beneath the city lies the not so pretty Paris catacombs, a network of tunnels that contain the remains of more than six million people. When basement walls collapsed around the Holy Innocents’ Cemetery, the residents of the cemetery were relocated to the underground catacombs sometime around 1786, and the tunnels were opened to the public in 1809. The 2014 horror film As Above, So Below actually obtained permission from the French authorities to film in the catacombs and tells the terrifying story of an archaeologist and her team who explore the tunnels with deadly results.
Set in Paris in the late eighties, the new Belgian film Deep Fear follows a group of students who decide to celebrate their graduation with a trip to the catacombs. Written by Nicolas Tackian and directed by Grégory Beghin (Losers Revolution), Deep...

Bella Hadid‘s Ramy character is revealed in the Season 3 trailer, above. Returning to Hulu September 30, the Ramy Youssef-led comedy-drama follows first-generation, Egyptian-American Ramy Hassan and his family as they navigate spirituality in their politically-divided New Jersey neighborhood. In the new season, Ramy continues to question his Muslim faith as part of a millennial generation that doubts an afterlife even exists. His family is forced to confront having lived a life dedicated to worldly concerns — and in some cases, lies — while Ramy all but abandons his spiritual journey, instead dedicating himself to the diamond business he has with his uncle. Hadid makes her acting debut as Lena, revealed in the trailer to be a love interest of Ramy’s buddy Steve (Steve Way). The two met on a Muslim dating app called Muslim Match, which apparently does not require users like Steve to be Muslim. Ramy also stars Moon Knight star May Calamawy,...
