VH1 has ordered a new docuseries following the sons and daughters of members of drug cartels, the network announced Monday.
The 10-episode “Cartel Crew,” produced by Big Fish Entertainment, will take a look at the lives of eight descendants of cartel life living in Miami, Florida as they navigate adulthood and the effects that the legacy has had on their upbringing. Now disconnected from their past, they want to make a name for themselves outside of the drug world, but find that escaping the shadows of their ancestors will come with a price.
The series will be led by Michael Blanco, the youngest son of the “Cocaine Godmother” Griselda Blanco, who left the drug life after 33 years when his mother was assassinated.

Having grown up as a teen on the troubled streets of South Central Los Angeles, writer and director David Ayer is fast becoming the best chronicler of the crime, social injustice and random violence that forever plagues the city of angels. Since writing the screenplays for Training Day and Dark Blue, Ayer has turned to directing with the underrated Harsh Times, Street Kings and now End of Watch.
End of Watch follows two L.A. patrol cops Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena) as they cruise around the streets and apprehend various criminal low lives. Taylor and Zavala stumble on to something much bigger though and find themselves marked for death by a Mexican drug cartel. Along the way we learn of their hopes, dreams and the loves in their life and how close the two of them are.

★★★☆☆ A cursory glance at David Ayer's filmography will reveal his propensity for cop dramas, with previous work including such titles as 2001's Training Day (for which he wrote the screenplay) and 2008's Street Kings. The American director was back on the beat again last year for his latest flick, End of Watch (2012), a gritty action-thriller set in Los Angeles which owes much to two exceptional central performances. Our protagonists this time around are Officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Peña), partners and best buds who are duty-bound protect and serve the citizens of the 'City of Angels'.

The story about two friends, police officers and partners in the mean streets of La, End of the Watch is brilliantly shot - thanks to the documentary style or .found footage. that has become popular in recent years. The film has a gritty realism that hooks you from the opening moments. The ending breaks some of the emotional investment of the audience, but the film is still one of the best police dramas in years. The two police officers, young and on the brink of the rest of their lives, are Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena). Mike is married and he and his wife are expecting a child while Brian is single. Throughout the...

End of Watch arrives on Blu-ray this Tuesday, thanks to Universal Home Entertainment. David Ayer wrote and directed one of the most realistic police dramas that I have seen. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera, Frank Grillo, and Natalie Martinez. Watching it again on Blu-ray has reminded me of how powerful the performances are. Those, coupled with the fantastic script and tight action sequences, make End of Watch a great addition to your Blu-ray collection.
The film follows two young officers Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Pena) during their daily patrols of South Central, one of the most crime populated sections of Los Angeles. Taylor and Zavala are both gung-ho young officers who go above and beyond the call of duty and use their knowledge of the streets to do some low level detective work. This pays off for their professional career, but gains...

David Ayer made his name as screenwriter of Training Day, in which Denzel Washington went down the mean streets of South Central Los Angeles as a smart bent cop showing the ropes to honest rookie Ethan Hawke. There is little moral coloration in his directorial debut, the entertaining police-procedural End of Watch, just different shades of honest Lapd blue, as principally worn by dedicated patrol officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has most of the jokes and is considering matrimony, and his Hispanic buddy, Mike Zavala (Michael Peña), who does most of the driving and is a long married father. They're a more realistic version of Lethal Weapon's Riggs and Murtaugh.
Both actors are first rate, their friendship palpable, their professional conduct (tempered by practical joking and youthful bravado) convincing. During the course of their daily watch, they take on every sort of case from fires and domestic disturbance...

End of Watch is out tomorrow in UK cinemas and I had the pleasure of chatting to one of the cast-members Michael Peña during the London Film Festival about his role in the movie. End of Watch is a brilliant film which I think you’re all going to love. If you missed Adam’s review of it, click here to have a read.

Jake Gyllenhaal's preparation for the police drama "End of Watch" took longer than filming. Says the actor, "I spent five months preparing for the role. I was on ride-alongs pretty much two or three times a week … Then we did sparring and fight training in a dojo in Echo Park every morning … and we also did live tactical training two times a week … It was a five-month process for a 22-day shoot." -Insertgroups:11- Gyllenhaal plays Lapd officer Brian Taylor, who along with his partner, Mike Zavala (Michael Pena), becomes the target of a drug cartel. The actors worked closely together during pre-production, and their off-screen rapport was crucial in developing their on-screen relationship. "There is nothing really fake in that movie," Gyllenhaal explains about working with his co-star. "Everything we did off-screen in preparation, our relationship, all of it, is in the movie … Without that time toge...

In their mission to abide by their oath to serve and protect, Officer Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Officer Mike Zavala (Michael Pena) have formed a powerful brotherhood to ensure they both go home at the End of Watch. The only guarantee for these officers is that there are no guarantees when patrolling the streets of South Central, Los Angeles.

Have you ever watched an episode of Cops and thought to yourself, “Gee, they should really turn this into a movie! That would be awesome!” Well, if these words, or something similar, have flown through your television-saturated brain at some point, then your wait is over and your wish has been granted.
End of Watch follows the lives of two blue-collar, street-level Lapd cops, Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena). Using the conceit that Brian is filming his daily life as an assignment for a film class, we watch through the lens of an “amateur” handheld video as the two cops patrol the streets, bust some baddies, shoot the breeze, uncover the nefarious dealings of a Mexican drug cartel, and live the typical lives of Lapd beat cops working in the grimy sections of the “City of Angels”.
If this summation is giving you an odd sense of deja vu,...

All it took was a director of David Ayer’s ingenuity to bring the oft-maligned found footage genre back into repute, transposing it onto his uniquely gritty blend of cop drama in End of Watch, a film not without its stylistic excesses, but girded by its visceral, unexpectedly affecting tone, and unquestionable devotion to characters over carnage.
From its opening shot, this is quite unlike anything we have seen in either crime thriller or found footage; the hood-mounted camera we’re used to seeing on shows like World’s Scariest Police Shows, complete with a date and time stamp, provides coverage of an intense car chase, backed by a kinetic score. At the scene’s conclusion, in a hail of gunfire, the story’s heroes emerge; police officers Bryan Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Peña), two regular cops who, by way of Taylor’s...

You can just hear that “Bad Boys” song playing can’t you, well it’s nowhere to be found during the film’s runtime. Training Day’s writer David Ayer allows us to ride along the patrol car of Officer’s Brian Taylor and Mike Zavala as they chase, bust and have small talk about their off-duty lives.
Taking place in the infamous and crime-ridden South Central L.A, the movie tries to go the “Found Footage” route, but luckily not all of it is from a hand-held camera’s P.O.V. So you can say it’s hedging it’s bets in terms of shooting angles. I didn’t mind the constant switching between the two styles, it allows for us to take in the full perspective the main characters are experiencing. The main problem with this technique is the problem I find with...

New 'End Of Watch' movie delivered lots of violent action, drama, comedy & more. Open Road Films released their new crime/drama flick "End Of Watch" into theaters this weekend. I just watched it,and I thought it was a very entertaining movie as it served up lots of violent action, drama, and even a little comedy. It stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Anna Kendrick, Frank Gillo, and America Ferrera. The new flick revolved around young Los Angeles police officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena) as they patrolled the meanest streets of South Central Los Angeles. It showed the two cops roaming the city's most dangerous corners, and other cops who risk their lives there every day, and the price they and their families are forced to pay. The film paced through sort of like a reality episode of "Cops." However, there were other regular movie scenes involved.

There’s nothing in David Ayer’s cop drama End of Watch that you haven’t already seen, but the film has moments so riveting that you might not care too much. Ayer has done the macho police thing before: He wrote the momentous Training Day (2001), in which a very angry Denzel Washington played a crooked cop, and he wrote and directed the problematic-but-compelling Harsh Times (2005), in which an even angrier Christian Bale played a crooked vet trying to become a cop. The characters in End of Watch match the ones in those films for sheer jacked-up explosiveness, but this time, the boys in blue are never actually dirty — though they are rowdy, arrogant, and occasionally even stupid. Gone are the moral complications and ethical gray areas of Ayer’s earlier work: Ably played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena, young partners Brian Taylor and Mike Zavala always stand on...

My chief concern when I first heard about End of Watch was the pitch that "the action unfolds entirely through footage from the handheld HD cameras of the police officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, and citizens caught in the line of fire." The use of the word "entirely" there is a bit of a lie, and thank God for that. While much of End of Watch is caught on handheld cameras controlled by the characters, writer/director David Ayer doesn't rely entirely on the gimmick and does manage to allow some of the narrative to unfold as would a normal film. I am, however, happy that was the extent of my knowledge about the film as watching the trailer after the fact made me aware the marketing reveals more of the plot than I would have ever cared to know going in. End of Watch begins by introducing us to South Central,...

David Ayer is the master of creating movies that explore the seedy underworld of police corruption. Ayer’s genesis of Detective Alonzo Harris in Training Day was genius enough to help Denzel Washington win an Academy Award. With End of Watch, Ayer takes us on an exploration of the white-hat side of law enforcement -- we get to hang out with the good guys this time.

I'll admit to having some trepidation about the first few scenes of "End of Watch." The film opens with a high-speed pursuit captured entirely on the built-in camera of the Lapd squad car driven by Officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Peña), and the following scene features Brian talking into a video camera about a film project he's doing for school. Lest you think "End of Watch" is going to be 2012's umpteenth "found footage" movie made up entirely of shaky, pixelly shots and actors looking right into...

Michael Peña and Jake Gyllenhaal are buddy cops in David Ayer's End Of Watch. In this clip from the crime drama, the two Lapd partners joke around about the ways of Latinos.

With studios always striving to cut costs, the handheld approach has been a crutch to keep budgets low and give audiences a reason for it. While it’s been executed with meticulous precision in films like Cloverfield, Paranormal Activity and most recently V/H/S, there are a handful that just get the device flat-out wrong.
Unfortunately End of Watch, the latest cop drama from David Ayer (Street Kings, Harsh Times), so flagrantly fails this conceit by the third or fourth scene. The rules it sets are immediately discarded. The film can never properly execute the intensity that’s bluntly driving every situation, whether it be action or simple dialogue exchanges.
