Madrid, Aug 7 (Ians) The Spanish La Liga kicks off a new season under its fresh official name this weekend. Yet, the ‘new’ Liga EA Sports is expected to witness the same teams vying for the title, with Fc Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid emerging as the principal contenders.
It, however, marks the dawn of a different era for the reigning champions, Fc Barcelona. With seasoned players Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets exiting the club during the summer, the addition of Ilkay Gundogan, Oriol Romeu, and Inigo Martinez should ably fill the void.
Ousmane Dembele’s surprising move to Paris Saint Germain raised eyebrows, and unless Barca secure another signing or Ansu Fati returns to form, their attacking strength, where Robert Lewandowski is about to turn 35, might falter.

Madrid (Spain), May 18 (Ians) Although La Liga doesn’t end until the weekend of June 3, Real Madrid’s season is to all intents and purposes over following their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League semifinal.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side are 14 points behind Barcelona in La Liga, with Barca crowned champions last weekend with four games left to play. Although Real Madrid are locked in a race with Atletico Madrid to finish second, their place in next season’s Spanish Super Cup is already assured after beating Osasuna in last month’s Copa del Rey final.
At the start of the year, the pro-Madrid press were talking about the club winning six titles this season, but in the end, they lifted just the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Super Cup and the World Club Cup, in which they defeated Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia and Egypt’s Al Ahly,...

Madrid, May 12 (Ians) Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed on Friday that he will ring the changes for his side’s La Liga game at home to Getafe on Saturday.
Madrid has almost no chance of winning La Liga and with a UEFA Champions League return leg away to Manchester City on Wednesday night, Ancelotti will rest as many players as possible expected to start in midweek while giving time to fringe players.
With the La Liga title long out of sight, it is a luxury Ancelotti has been able to carry out for the past month or so, and after winning the Copa del Rey last Saturday, the tactic has clearly worked.
That should mean players such as Marco Asensio, Dani Carvajal, Aurelien Tchouameni and even Mariano Diaz will probably kick off against a rival that is still battling to avoid relegation, a Xinhua report said.

Madrid, Feb 22 (Ians) Real Madrid’s impressive win away to Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night has come with a price ahead of their La Liga derby at home to Atletico Madrid this weekend.
David Alaba had to leave the game in the first half after suffering a hamstring problem, while Rodrygo was forced out in the second half after suffering a strain high on the back of his left leg.
It looks to be impossible for Alaba to recover for Saturday’s match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, while Rodrygo will also be a doubt for that game and next week’s Copa del Rey semifinal first leg at home to Fc Barcelona, a Xinhua report said.

Madrid (Spain), Feb 20 (Ians) Midfielders Toni Kroos and Aurelien Tchouameni have both been left out of the Real Madrid squad that left for Liverpool on Monday ahead of their UEFA Champions League last-16 first-leg tie.
The duo missed Saturday’s 2-0 win away to Osasuna with flu and neither has recovered in time for the game. That limits the options of coach Carlo Ancelotti in midfield, and the Italian will almost certainly line up with Luka Modric, Dani Ceballos and Eduardo Camavinga.
The good news for Madrid is that Karim Benzema has shaken off the slight muscle issue that sidelined him at the weekend and has been included in the squad, reports Xinhua.
Ancelotti has also called up B-team striker Alvaro Rodriguez, who impressed in a brief substitute appearance on Saturday night. The tall forward set up Vinicius Jr for a goal that was disallowed for offside and then assisted...

Madrid (Spain), Feb 1 (Ians) Real Madrid on Thursday night have the chance to strengthen their position in second place in La Liga by piling some hurt on managerless Valencia.
Valencia travel to the Santiago Bernabeu with club stalwart ‘Voro’ Gonzalez in temporary charge after Gennaro Gattuso left the club ‘by mutual consent’ on Monday for a string of bad results leaving them just a point above the relegation zone.
Thursday’s match is part of the 17th round of matches in La Liga and was postponed earlier this month as the twor sides met in the semifinal of the Spanish Supercup in Saudi Arabia.
That game should give Valencia some hope of getting something from the Bernabeu, as they twice came from behind in Saudi Arabia to draw 2-2, before eventually succumbing on penalties to Madrid.

Madrid, Jan 22 (Ians) Real Madrid have a difficult and vital trip to face Athletic Club Bilbao on Sunday night and the pressure is likely to be on Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
If Barcelona win their match at home to Getafe earlier in the day, Madrid will be six points behind the side that beat them in the Spanish Super Cup, in the race for the La Liga title, reports Xinhua news agency.
Ancelotti’s men got a huge morale boost on Thursday as they came back from 2-0 down to eventually win 3-2 away to Villarreal in the Copa del Rey to set up a quarterfinal at home to Atletico Madrid next week.
As the game was played on Thursday, it gives Ancelotti little time to recover tired legs among his players, although Luka Modric, who was rested in the Cup, should be available.

Riyadh, Jan 14 (Ians) Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti says his players will never tire of winning titles as they prepare for Sunday’s Spanish Super Cup final against Fc Barcelona.
In his pre-game press conference, Ancelotti insisted the team was “motivated,” and the “players are used to this type of pressure”, reports Xinhua news agency.
“They will never not be hungry to win; they have a great mentality,” continued the coach, who insisted playing for Real Madrid means “they don’t allow you to think about getting your fill.”
Ancelotti dismissed talk of his side winning all six titles this season, saying the idea wasn’t in their heads. “We are only thinking about the Super Cup. It is something very complicated; we have to continue step by step and get to the end of the season in good shape,” he said.

Riyadh, Jan 10 (Ians) Real Madrid will face Valencia in the first semifinal of the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday night.
The tournament, which is being played in Saudi Arabia for the third time, pits last season’s La Liga winners Real Madrid against Copa del Rey runners-up Valencia, while the Cup winners Betis and the side that finished second in La Liga, Fc Barcelona, play on Thursday night, with the final on Sunday.
Real Madrid are clear favorites to go through against Valencia despite their 2-1 defeat in Villarreal on Saturday.
Dani Carvajal has traveled with the squad to Riyadh after missing out at the weekend and could return at right back. Defender David Alaba and French international midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni will miss the tournament with calf injuries, reports Xinhua.

Madrid, Dec 29 (Ians) Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said his players were in good shape ahead of his side’s return to La Liga action following the FIFA World Cup.
The Italian was asked about the fitness of his players, plans for any possible signings in January, and also whether he had been contacted with a view to becoming new coach of the Brazil national team.
Ancelotti said his team was in good shape to return to domestic action against Real Valladolid on Friday.
“We’re fine, we’ve got [Karim] Benzema back and that’s good. Those who have joined today [Luka Modric, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga] have a specific training plan, but everyone is fine, except Mariano [Diaz], who sprained his ankle in a friendly,” commented the coach.
Benzema was due to play in the World Cup, but had to leave the France training camp after suffering an injury to his left thigh.

Madrid, Dec 29 (Ians) The Spanish La Liga returns to action on Thursday after a six-week break for the FIFA World Cup. Here are some things to look out for in the coming days.
1. How will Barca do after World Cup efforts?
No club provided more players to the World Cup than Barcelona, who had 17 players in Qatar, with Ousmane Dembele and Jules Kounde playing in the final with France. While most teams were able to enjoy a mid-season break, most of Barca’s squad were hard at work and the lack of first-team members in Spain also complicated Xavi Hernandez’s job of organising training sessions.
The effects of tiredness may not be felt straight away as Barca visit local rivals Espanyol, but they could affect Barca’s form in the coming months.
Meanwhile, the club will be without Robert Lewandowski against Espanyol due to suspension but could have central...

Doha, Dec 20 (Ians) The 2022 World Cup final will go down in history as one of the greatest ever, as Argentina won 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the scoreline was locked at 3-3 at the end of extra time. And, Gonzalo Montiel will forever be remembered as the player who scored the winning spot kick, with the Sevilla Fc right-back displaying cool confidence to send France captain Hugo Lloris the wrong way and to kickstart the celebrations.
Not only was it a historic penalty, but it was also a brilliantly executed one. The full-back didn’t even look at Lloris and, with the world watching, he focused solely on the ball, dispatching a solid and sure kick to his left.
That made it ten penalties converted from ten penalties attempted in the 25-year-old’s career, after he started taking spot kicks while working under Marcelo Gallardo at River Plate. “We...

Qatar, Dec 19 (Ians) France manager Didier Deschamps said his players suffered from a “lack of energy” in the team’s penalty shootout defeat to Argentina in the World Cup final here on Sunday.
Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria struck first-half goals to give Argentina a 2-0 lead at Lusail Stadium but two late goals from Kylian Mbappe forced the match into extra time. Messi restored Argentina’s advantage in the 108th minute before Mbappe scored a late penalty as the game went to a penalty shootout.
Aurelien Tchouameni and Kingsley Coman failed to convert shootout attempts for France as Argentina lifted the trophy for the first time since 1986.
“We were facing a strong opponent and also lacked a bit of energy from some of our key players,” Deschamps was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency. “But some of our younger players came on and brought freshness and quality.

Doha, Dec 12 (Ians) The semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will see Croatia take on Argentina and France play Morocco, look as if they will be a triumph of pragmatism over brilliance and emblematic of hard work on the pitch.
Croatia reached the semifinals for the second time in four years after a nerve-shredding penalty shootout against Brazil that left the pre-tournament favorites in tears.
The never-say-die spirit of the Croatians, coupled with the excellence of veteran midfielder Luka Modric and defender Dejan Lovren, saw a fine defensive display and shows that a side that has taken many ties in knockout stages of recent major tournaments to extra time, does not know how to give up, reports Xinhua news agency.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 11 (Ians) England captain Harry Kane on Sunday said that he is absolutely gutted after his side’s disappointing exit from the FIFA World Cup and took the responsibility for the quarterfinal defeat against France, adding that itll take some time to get over it.
England’s World Cup campaign ended in disappointment on Saturday night after they lost their quarterfinal against France at Al Bayt Stadium, with Kane’s late penalty miss turned out to be decisive.
The England captain had already levelled the score with a penalty to cancel out Aurelien Tchouameni’s 17th-minute opener for France. In the 83rd minute, Kane had another opportunity to level from the spot after Mason Mount was bundled over by Theo Hernandez.
This time, however, Kane sent his effort high into the night sky and France held on for the win.

Although capitain Harry Kane levelled once from the penalty spot, he fired a second penalty over the bar seven minutes from time.

“I can’t fault my preparation or the details before the game. I felt confident taking it, just didn’t execute it the way I wanted to. It will be something I have to live with and take on the chin,” Kane told the BBC.

Doha, Dec 11 (Ians) France coach Didier Deschamps refused to look beyond next week’s World Cup semifinal with Morocco when asked about his future.
Speaking to the press after France’s 2-1 win against England in a thrilling quarterfinal, the coach, whose contract is up at the end of the tournament said: “I will be manager for the semifinal and after that we will see. I don’t know everything in advance. We will tackle that later.”
He gave a lot of merit to his side’s win, which came thanks to a first half shot from Aurelien Tchouameni and a second half header from Olivier Giroud, while Harry Kane scored one penalty and then missed another that would have taken the game into extra time.
“England have a very, very good team. We put up a good fight. I regret we gave them a penalty and then gave them another penalty,...

England provided a wonderful fightback but missed a crucial chance to take the game into extra time as Harry Kane missed a penalty at fag end of the match.
In the end, Les Bleus’s ability to produce a moment of brilliance out of thin air was the difference and are the first reigning champion to reach the World Cup semi-finals since Brazil in 1998.
England now head back home, but they should do so with their heads held high, having pushed the current world champions the distance in this gripping encounter.
It was a largely equally matched first half, but England began the second with renewed vigour.
England midfielder Jordan Henderson said they gave everything in the match.
"It’s difficult to find the right words. I thought we gave everything. (We were) disappointed to go one-nil down. I thought (our) character to keep going and find an equaliser was good.

Madrid (Spain), Sep 13 (Ians) Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will continue his policy of squad rotations for Wednesday’s Champions League tie at home to Rb Leipzig.
Last week’s 3-0 win away to Celtic got Real Madrid’s title defense off to a perfect start and they are clear favourites against a side that kicked off their European campaign with a 4-1 defeat at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.
That defeat saw coach, Domenico Tedesco, sacked and replaced by Marcos Rose in the Rb Leipzig dugout and Rose began his time in charge with a 3-0 win at home to Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid are without Eder Militao, Karim Benzema and Lucas Vazquez for Wednesday, but Ancelotti will be able to bring Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal into his side to freshen things up.
Meanwhile, Eden Hazard or Marco Asensio will probably cover for Benzema, although...

Madrid (Spain), Sep 5 (Ians) Real Madrid and Sevilla kick off their UEFA Champions League campaigns on Tuesday with both sides in very different positions in La Liga at the start of the season.
Real Madrid travel to Celtic Park in Glasgow with a 100 percent winning record this season and the reigning European champions will expect to continue their winning start, despite their rivals’ excellent start to the season in Scotland.
Celtic welcome Real Madrid after thumping traditional rivals Rangers 4-0 in the Old Firm clash at the weekend, and over 60,000 fans will provide a tremendous atmosphere.
However, Real Madrid are a technically better side, with Vinicius Jr. in excellent form, while new arrival Aurelien Tchouameni has slotted perfectly into central midfield.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti rested Toni Kroos, Lucas Vazquez and Antonio Rudiger at the weekend and they will probably start, with David Alaba shifting across to left-back and...

Madrid, Aug 29 (Ians) Captain Karim Benzema scored twice in a wild finish as Real Madrid won 3-1 at Espanyol to preserve their 100 per cent record after three games of the La Liga season.
Vinicius Junior’s tidy finish was cancelled out by a goal from Joselu, who has made a habit of scoring against Madrid since spending three years early in his career with the capital club’s ‘Castilla’ B team, reports Dpa.
Benzema had a goal ruled out after the break, while Joselu almost pinched another, before Benzema turned in a cross from Rodrygo to snatch the points. Espanyol goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte was sent off in stoppage time and Benzema added his second from the subsequent free-kick as the game ended chaotically.
The result means Madrid move level on nine points with Real Betis, the next opponents for Carlo Ancelotti’s team and the only other side with a perfect record.
