On January 31, 2023, Netflix released “Pamela, a Love Story,” a documentary telling the story of Pamela Anderson in her own words. It is described as “an intimate and humanizing portrait of one of the world’s most famous blonde bombshells. ‘Pamela, a Love Story’ follows the trajectory of Anderson’s life and career from small town girl to international sex symbol, actress, activist and doting mother.”
Early reviews are stellar for the film from Emmy-nominated director Ryan White. It currently holds a perfect 100 freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience score of 88. Read our review roundup of “Pamela, a Love Story” below.

Before he died in 1999, Stanley Kubrick had grand plans for multiple films, including his retelling of Napoleon Bonaparte's life that would have seen none other than Jack Nicholson in the title role. But for me, his long-gestating adaptation of British author Brian Aldiss's short story "Supertoys Last All Summer Long" was a much more interesting project — simply because it demonstrated Kubrick's remarkable prescience through his fascination with artificial intelligence back in the '70s.
The way things played out, Kubrick never made his "Supertoys," handing off directing duties to Steven Spielberg before his death. This is a shame because while Spielberg's attempt at bringing the story to the screen is mostly well-respected, I always felt the full Kubrick treatment would have yielded a genuine masterpiece.
As it stands, we have 2001's "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." Set in a climate change-ravaged 22nd century, the movie follows David (Haley Joel Osment...

A major 2003 Oscars contender two decades ago was Alexander Payne’s “About Schmidt,” starring Jack Nicholson, Kathy Bates, Hope Davis and Dermot Mulroney. It was Payne’s first film since 1999’s “Election,” which earned him and his writing partner Jim Taylor their breakthrough Oscar nominations, and it was Nicholson’s first major Oscar player since his third Best Actor win in 1998 for “As Good As It Gets.” In addition, Bates was going for her third Oscar nom after her Best Actress win for “Misery” in 1991 and Best Supporting Actress nomination for “Primary Colors” in 1999. Going into wide release on January 3, 2003, in 816 theaters, “About Schmidt” made more than eight million dollars in its opening weekend, an excellent 10,784 per screen, before earning a strong 105 million dollars worldwide by the end of its theatrical run.

“Paris, 13th District” is the latest picture from acclaimed director Jacques Audiard, known for such award-winning films as “A Prophet” and “Rust and Bone.” In his latest, Audiard teams up with “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” writer Céline Sciamma and fellow French screenwriter Léa Mysius to tell the story of four young lovers in the electrifying, multicultural 13th arrondissement of Paris. The film opens in select theaters and on demand on April 15.
Adapted from Adrian Tomine’s acclaimed graphic novel, “Paris, 13th District” weaves a breezy tapestry of modern love stories. Lucie Zhang delivers a breakout performance as free-spirited Émilie, who begins a casual relationship with new roommate Camille (Makita Samba). Noémie Merlant (‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’) plays wide-eyed student Nora, whose new life in Paris is complicated when she is accidentally mistaken for cam girl Amber Sweet (Jehnny Beth).

Better late than never. After the traditional Cannes Film Festival was cancelled last year due to Covid, the glitzy event is back with Covid protocols in order. Instead of taking place in May, the 74th annual gala opened on July 6 and will continue through July 17th at the glamorous French resort town.

Throughout history comedies have had a rocky relationship with the Academy Awards, often being overlooked for films that pour on the drama. That’s why the Golden Globes are often seen as the celebratory event for the funniest movies of the year, with special categories for the comedy film, actor and actress. In 2017, however, the Globes shockingly snubbed one of the most acclaimed films of the year, “The Big Sick” from producer Judd Apatow (ironically writers Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon received Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay). Now they have an opportunity to make amends with Apatow’s hottest contender of the year, “The King of Staten Island,” which he also directed and co-wrote with its star Pete Davidson (“Saturday Night Live).

“Bombshell” opened on December 13 fresh off of a week when it earned four Critics’ Choice Award nominations, four SAG Award nominations, and two Golden Globe nominations. But what do critics at large think of this satirical take on the Fox News sexual harassment scandal that brought down Roger Ailes (played by John Lithgow)?
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 66 based on 27 reviews counted thus far: 17 positive, 9 somewhat mixed, only 1 outright negative. Meanwhile, Rotten Tomatoes categorizes reviews simply as pass or fail and not with the sliding scale that MetaCritic uses; its freshness rating is 62% based on 74 reviews, 28 of which are classified as negative. Rt summarizes the reviews with its critics’ consensus: “‘Bombshell’ benefits from a terrific cast and a worthy subject, but its impact is muffled by a frustrating inability to go deeper than the sensationalistic surface.”

The most notorious pre-Code shocker comes to Criterion — and proves to be a superior drama with an entirely mature, sound outlook on the political issues around women’s sexuality and personal freedom. Taken from a raw novel by William Faulkner, this tale of rape and terror stars Miriam Hopkins in one of the bravest, best performances of its era. Truth-telling like this always comes at a price — Temple Drake was a prime target for the oppressive Production Code, with the result that Hopkins’ achievement was banned and unseen for over thirty-five years.

“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” opened on November 22, a little more than a year after “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” explored Fred Rogers‘s life and career in documentary form. But “Beautiful Day” isn’t a Mr. Rogers biopic, per se. It shows him through the eyes of a cynical journalist whose worldview is changed when he profiles the beloved children’s show host. So what do critics think of this point of view?
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 80 based on 41 reviews counted thus far: 39 positive and only 2 somewhat mixed. Hey, Marvel Movie fans. The huge, new Marvel "Avengers: Endgame" movie officially hit theaters nationwide today, April 26, 2019, and a lot of the reviews are in from the top movie critics in the country. After skimming over a few of them, I can already see that most of them are quite positive. It got an overall 77 out of a possible 100 score over on the Metacritic.com site. In this article, we're going to reveal what a few of the top critics had to say. To get things started, Michael O'Sullivan from the Washington Post gave it a perfect 100 score, and he said Endgame is about acceptance and moving on. He stated, "If “Infinity War” was about failure, “Endgame” is, ironically, all about acceptance and moving on. After 11 long years, the Infinity Saga is finally, fulfillingly over. There is no post-credit scene. But oh, what a going-away party these old friends have thrown for themselves.

“The Greatest Showman” is failing to capture audiences as reviews are trickling in — the musical, holding a score of 40 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, is being described as “an awful mess” and a “disappointing circus.” “The actual movie? Send in the clowns. Michael Gracey’s directorial debut is a disappointing circus of thinly developed characters, overly earnest melodrama and song-and-dance sequences that are more like unrelated music videos sewn together for a threadbare narrative,” USA Today’s Brian Truitt wrote, while The San Francisco Chronicle’s Mick Lasalle said, “It’s magnificently idiotic. It’s an awful mess, but it’s flashy.

Kathryn Bigelow has returned to the big screen with “Detroit,” her first movie since 2012’s “Zero Dark Thirty” — and critics are stunned by her “devastatingly effective achievement,” calling it one of the “most essential films of the year.” “‘Detroit’ is tough, but it’s worth it, every minute of it,” San Francisco Chronicle’s Mick Lasalle wrote in his review. “‘Detroit’ is likely destined for the Oscar race, where Smith and Poulter could go head-to-head with best supporting actor nominations, if the film sustains itself through the long awards slog,” wrote USA Today’s Andrea Mandell. Other critics called the film Bigelow’s “most harrowing.

There’s a new theater in town! When I first heard that my favorite St. Louis movie house, The Hi-Pointe, was adding a second screen, I was concerned that they were going to cut their magnificent 450-seat movie palace in half to accommodate a second screen to stay competitive with the multiplexes. The Hi-Pointe, opened in 1922, is the oldest operating theater in the Missouri portion of the St. Louis area and the only single screener. Thankfully, my fears were put to rest when I found out that The Hi-Pointe Backlot, their new satellite theater, is located on the second floor of a building behind the main Hi-Pointe (1005 McCausland Ave.in St. Louis) and that the big theater still has all of its seats. This is exciting! The Hi-Pointe Backlot, which seats 50, opens this Friday, May 1st.
So what movie did they choose to inaugurate this grand opening? …….a documentary about the fashion industry!

Mila Kunis and Kick Gurry in Jupiter Ascending.
.
Since Jupiter Ascending.s world premiere at Sundance the sci-fi action-adventure and writers-directors Andy and Lana Wachowski have been pilloried by most critics and the production is shaping as a costly write-off for Warner Bros and Village Roadshow Pictures.
Much of that criticism is unfair and disrespectful to the filmmakers, according to Kick Gurry, who plays Jupiter.s cousin Vladie in his second collaboration with the Wachowskis.
.The Matrix was the best action film of the last 25 years,. the Los Angeles-based Gurry tells If. .I don.t know why people revel in lampooning Jupiter Ascending so much. The Wachowskis should be held in higher regard than they are by some reviewers.
.I love the movie, its message and what it stands for. It.s great that movies inspire debate and conversation but it upsets me when some of the criticism gets more personal.

Stanley Kubrick believed that casting was 80 percent responsible for the failure or success of a film. Put the right actor—not necessarily the best actor—in the right role, and everything has a way of falling into place. The Judge is a father-son courtroom drama featuring a Jaded Lawyer and an Ornery Coot, and it would be difficult to imagine better choices than Robert Downey Jr., who produced the film with his wife, and Robert Duvall. Downey, in his first real drama since 2009's The Soloist, "plays the closest thing to a real human being he's tackled in ages," writes EW's critic Chris Nashawaty.
