The awards ceremony of the 14th Taiwan International Documentary Festival (Tidf) took place on May 16. 42 nominated films in the Asian Vision Competition, International Competition, Taiwan Competition and 14 works shortlisted for the Tidf Visionary Award, an award for promoting sinophone documentaries, competed for 11 awards.
The Programme Director Wood Lin says this is his 7th time participating in Tidf's programming since 2010, and a persistent self-pursuit for incarnating the spirit of documentary through curating has made each version more challenging than imagined. He also thanks all the filmmakers at the ceremony for devoting their lives to and fully engaging in filmmaking; their works are wonderful gifts that introduce the complexity and beauty of the world to the audience in Taiwan. He then quoted this year's Outstanding Contribution Award recipient, Chang Chao-tang: “We exist, because people who remember us”, saying that Tidf also exists because all who participate, remembers it.

Thai-German title Santikhiri Sonata won in the international competition, while Pedro Felipe Marques' Breeding Ground triumphed in the Portuguese section. The 17th Doclisboa International Film Festival (17 - 27 October) wrapped with the triumph of Santkihiri Sonata, a Thai-German co-production directed by Thunska Pansittivorakul. The experimental, associative docu-fiction hybrid about the eponymous region in the north of Thailand and the rule of General Prem Tinsulanonda and its consequences, received the City of Lisboa Award worth €8,000 from the jury composed of Billy Woodberry, Carlos Almeida, Jérôme Bel, Juliano Gomes, Leonor Silveira and Mania Akbari. The film had its world premiere at Doclisboa. The Portuguese Authors Society International Competition Jury Award worth €2,000 went to French filmmaker Frank Beauvais's Berlinale Forum title Just Don't Think I'll Scream, while Brazilian director Jo Serfaty received a special mention for Sun Inside, which had its international premiere at Doclisboa. The Portuguese event will showcase 303 films from 48 countries across its 11 sections, and feature a rich industry section with numerous projects at various stages of development. The 17th Doclisboa International Film Festival (17-27 September) will officially open with the Locarno competition title Endless Night by Eloy Enciso. This choice would certainly suggest that the "Doc" in the festival's name should be taken with a pinch of salt. Doclisboa is known as one of those European festivals where fact and fiction are always intertwined, and the programme concept does not vary between the forms – nor does it pay much heed to running times, as all sections include pictures of all lengths. In the International Competition, there are 14 films, out of which four will be having their world premieres in Lisbon: Christian Haardt's A New Environment: Heinrich Klotz on Architecture and New Media (Germany), Thunska Pansittivorakul's Santikhiri Sonata...

The Netherlands have always had a special place for Jews. Not always loved, but always protected, Amsterdam calls itself “Mokum” meaning “The Place” in Hebrew and Rotterdammers say “Mazel Tov” when they mean congratulations and all toast with “Daar Ga Je” which in Dutch sounds like “Le Cha’im”.
Jewish movies this year included two Russian films and films which while inclusive of Jews were not “Jewish” in nature.
Anna’s War, directed by Alexey Fedorchenko (2018, Russia, 75 minutes), is about a 6-year-old Anna whose entire family dies in the mass coordinated execution of Jews. The mother covers up Anna with her own body, and the girl miraculously survives. For the next few hundred days Anna hides in the disused chimney at the Nazi Commandant’s office. From her shelter she watches as life passes her by until the village is liberated from the Nazis. In these inhuman conditions Anna not...
