Give him an "A" for ingenuity. Four years into a 20-year sentence for illegal weapons possession, Juan Ramirez Tijerina had had enough of life in the pokey. After a conjugal visit in July 2011 with his partner, Maria del Carmen Arjona Rivero, he was packed and ready to go - literally. Ramirez was apprehended after officers, noticing that Arjona seemed nervous as she headed for the prison exit in Chetumal, Mexico, with a bulging suitcase, unzipped the bag and found the convict inside. He's back behind bars, and Arjona was detained. "This is rare," says a prison spokesman. "Most of the inmates here dig tunnels,...

A woman in Mexico has been arrested after attempting to smuggle her husband out of jail by stuffing him into a suitcase and bringing him to the airport, presumably after she failed to sneak him a nail file inside a cake: The woman, who is the man’s common law wife, had been allowed to visit the man for a conjugal visit, police in Mexico say. Prison guards noticed something was wrong when she appeared to be nervous and was pushing a suitcase that was “overstuffed.” Chetumal prison spokesman Gerardo Campos said guards checked the bag and found the inmate, identified as Juan Ramirez-Tijerina, inside the bag curled up in a fetal position. “Alright, we should be in the clear as long as no one x-rays you, notices you’re moving, or realizes that I’m speaking to a bag right now. Oops, the guards are coming towards us.

The guy clearly felt he was on a roll. Not only did he get to have some quality time with his wife despite his being held as an inmate in a Mexican jail, but the suitcase that his wife brought along to the conjugal visit? He totally fit inside! Bonus! Turns out, though, Juan Ramirez Tijerina's luck was only going to last so long, and that didn't include successfully escaping the prison in Chetumal, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. A wise prison officer unzipped the bag, and, as they say in Mexico, the jig was up.
