In the summer of 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested in Milwaukee and sentenced to 957 years in prison for killing 17 people and dismembering their bodies over a 13-year period. Stories of necrophilia and cannibalism added to the horror of Dahmer's crimes. The Jeffrey Dahmer Files talks to those who knew Dahmer during and after his hidden killing spree. The Jeffrey Dahmer Files is an artistically shot documentary that will appeal mostly to those familiar with the Dahmer case.
The film is directed by Chris James Thompson and stars Andrew Swant (as Dahmer), Jeffrey Sentzen, Pat Kennedy, and Pamela Bass.
The Jefferey Dahmer Files contains some interesting interviews, creatively re-created scenes of actual places Dahmer frequented (which wonderfully capture's the 'feel' of the late 80's/early 90's), and pertinent details about his murders.
Unfortunately the film doesn't offer much insight into the case that hasn't already been reported. The True Crime fan in me wanted to learn some unreported informational nuggets. The horror fan in me wanted to see some unpublished crime scene photos. That didn't happen.
This film will certainly attract fanatical Dahmer investigators, and also offers some meat for those unfamiliar with his crimes. Andrew Swant portrays an almost perfect Dahmer...

In 1991, serial killer/sex offender Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested and sentenced for the murder of 17 men and boys. Not only did Dahmer murder his victims but he also raped, dismembered and engaged in cannibalism. He was a true animal and his heinous treatment of his victims is solid proof of that. A documentary film The Jeffrey Dahmer Files a.k.a. Jeff was made to explore Dahmer and allow audiences a look into the investigation.
Jeff is a well-made documentary which combines dramatic re-enactments, archival footage and interviews of people involved with the Dahmer case. Dahmer is played by Andrew Swant (William Shatner’s Gonzo Ballet) in a brilliant re-enactment of the infamous serial killer’s life. The scenes of Dahmer are eerie and realistic. Swant definitely nailed the role. These scenes are mixed in with actual photos and footage caught by the Milwaukee police. They flow perfectly into one another.

Editor’s Note: This review originally ran during the 2012 SXSW Film Festival (when the film was titled Jeff), but we’re re-running it now as the film opens in limited theatrical release. Documentary director Chris James Thompson would like us to remember that even serial killers have neighbors, or ride the bus, or go the pharmacy. Of course, they also kill and maim and even eat their victims or get caught, but they still have some of the same needs as everyone else. In Thompson’s Jeffrey Dahmer documentary, The Jeffrey Dahmer Files, the filmmaker attempts to take us inside the mind of both Dahmer and a handful of those who surrounded him during his crimes and their aftermath. Unfortunately, the film lacks any sort of suitable or satisfying entry point for the uninitiated, and might still prove to be a bit obtuse even for those who know what they’re getting into. As...

Twenty years after he was caught red handed, Jeffrey Dahmer continues to be a storytelling gold mine, but for newbie doc helmer Chris James Thompson, he was merely a demented center of a much bigger storm. His culturally struggling hometown of Milwaukee was sent into a frenzy after Dahmer’s story hit national news, but behind those fifteen gruesome murders was a rather mundane man who’s affect reached far beyond the poor families of his victims. From the African-American neighbors he befriended, to the police officers that were forced to sort through the horror that was recovered from his apartment, all were touched by evil. With suitably grainy 16 mm reenacted footage, and startling candid interviews from the people that were closest to the case, The Jeffrey Dahmer Files is a hybrid doc that delves into the affect of a serial killer on the community he was a part of...

Even twenty-plus years later, the name Jeffrey Dahmer sends chills down the spine. With the details of his series of murders still as grisly and disturbing today as they were back then, it's no surprise that his story continues to captivate, and the upcoming experimental documentary "The Jeffrey Dahmer Files" attempts to delve into the person behind the moster. Directed by Chris James Thompson, the film presents interviews with lead detective Pat Kennedy, medical examiner Jeffrey Jentzen, and Dahmer's then-neighbor Pamela Bass, as they all weigh in with their experiences at the time. But adding to the eeriness are dramatic recreations featuring Andrew Swant as the killer going about his everyday routine. And in our exclusive clip from the film below, we saw both the documentary work and re-enactments together, and how they pair to paint an interesting portrait of someone no one ever really knew. "The Jeffrey Dahmer Files" opens in limited.

2012, USA
The opening frames of The Jeffrey Dahmer Files, which linger on fish swimming in an aquarium as Jeffrey Dahmer (Andrew Swant) admires them, suggest this film isn’t like the other documentaries. And in many ways it is not. Begun as a fictionalized account of Jeffrey Dahmer doing his errands, director Chris James Thompson eventually decided to turn the film into a documentary to make it more dynamic. His interest was not in the specifics of the case (which are mentioned off hand when at all) but in the ways everyone involved in the case was effected.
The main interviewees are Pamela Bass, Dahmer’s former neighbor, Jeffrey Jentzen, the medical examiner on the case, and Pat Kennedy, the detective assigned to the Dahmer. All are incredibly interesting interviews, with Pat Kennedy...

Serial killers are the subjects of endless fascination, especially in the realm of entertainment. The more heinous the crime, the more compelling it is, and that’s definitely true in the case of Jeffrey Dahmer. The cannibalistic murderer is the focus of countless movies and books; just last month, the graphic novel My Friend Dahmer was picked up for a big-screen adaptation.
His story resurfaces once again in director Chris James Thompson’s documentary The Jeffrey Dahmer Files, which made its world premiere at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival and also played the 2012 Hot Docs Film Festival in Toronto. Here’s something to chew on. IFC Midnight has acquired all North American and UK rights to Chris James Thompson's documentary “The Jeffrey Dahmer Files,” which had its world premiere in competition at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival (where it screened with the title "Jeff"). The specialty distributor plans an early 2013 release for the project, which investigates the life and madness of the infamous serial killer through interviews with the people of Milwaukee who knew or came into contact with Dahmer before and after his 1991 arrest. Andrew Swant and Joe Riepenhoff wrote the screenplay with Thompson, who also produced along with Jack Turner. Chris Smith and Barry Poltermann are executive producers. “Chris James Thompson has made one of the creepiest documentaries of the year that lingers in the mind long after the film has ended,” said Sundance Selects/IFC Films president Jonathan Sehring. “He's approached the...

Jeff
Directed by Chris James Thompson
Written by Chris James Thompson and Andrew Swant
2012, USA
The opening frames of Jeff, which linger on fish swimming in an aquarium as Jeffrey Dahmer (Andrew Swant) admires them, suggest this film isn’t like the other documentaries.
All are incredibly interesting interviews, with Pat Kennedy proving the most lively and entertaining presence.

On July 22, 1992, Milwaukee police finally arrested serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer after an altercation with an almost-victim led officers to his apartment on the west side of town. There, police discovered a human head chilling in the refrigerator, the dismembered body parts of several others and a murder scene described as a “disaster” that exceeded police resources.
Soon, the public knew the name Dahmer, and that he had collected souvenir skulls from his victims, including a 14-year-old boy who briefly escaped into the arms of local police (naked and bleeding) only to be returned to a fast-talking Dahmer (who promptly killed him). Dahmer confessed to 17 murders, was declared legally sane in court, and eventually sentenced to 15 life terms totaling 957 years in prison. But Dahmer would only serve 2 before a fellow inmate beat him to death in the Columbia Correctional Institution.
All of this disturbing information is included in the documentary simply titled Jeff,...
