In the 1990s and 2000s, May (and specifically Memorial Day) typically marked the beginning of Summer Movie Season. Multiplexes nationwide were packed to the emergency exits with big names, big explosions and (presumably) big box office. The film industry has changed since then, obviously, and summer no longer packs the same high-octane punch that it once did. But in this evolution, release schedule space has opened up for a stellar month of Don’t-Miss Indies titles.

The lessons in Netflix’s new animated coming-of-age musical Leo might be clichéd, but they are presented with enough heart to turn even the most cynical viewers into fans of the titular reptile.
Leo, voiced by Adam Sandler, is a lizard, and he’s lived in the same classroom for nearly 80 years. Hundreds of fifth-graders have walked through the halls of Fort Myer Elementary School, so there’s not much Leo hasn’t seen when it comes to angsty preteens and their anxious parents. Their aesthetics and preoccupations have changed — the most recent class of students are glued to their phones and no longer sporting mohawks — but their problems are largely the same. From his tank, which he shares with a turtle named Squirtle (Bill Burr), Leo observes each new batch of kids with a distant curiosity.
All of that shifts when Leo overhears an adult during parent-teacher conferences remarking on his age.

Though there had been earlier efforts, like Ealing Studios’s Dead of Night from 1945, the horror anthology film came into its own in the 1960s with titles like Kobayashi Masaki’s Kwaidan and the Poe-centric Spirits of the Dead from directors Roger Vadim, Louis Malle, and Federico Fellini. Hammer Films’s rival Amicus churned out no fewer than seven of them in a 10-year period starting with Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors. But the one that really got the omnibus rolling was Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath from 1963, an Italian-American co-production that resulted in two different versions of the film.
After the success of 1960’s Black Sunday, American International Pictures took a more active hand in producing several of Bava’s later films, altering them in the process to suit American audiences that tended to skew younger. The Aip cut of Black Sabbath rearranges its three segments, tones down some...

The new film by Pablo Larrain, El Conde, deals with Augusto Pinochet, the Chilean dictator, in an unexpected manner. The film reveals that Pinochet is a 250-year-old vampire, and you might think he died in 2006, but he is still very much alive, living in a secluded place on the outskirts of Chile. It’s a provocative idea, trying to bring out the satirical humor associated with dictatorships and the familial and political underpinnings surrounding Pinochet himself.
El Conde is filled with violence and gore, all hinting at the bloodshed during Pinochet’s 1973 coup and the human rights violations during his reign. By showing him as a vampire, a creature who feasts on human blood, the metaphor of politicians ‘sucking the soul’ out of people is nicely brought out in the open. Jaime Vadell delivers a striking portrayal of a vampirical spoof of Pinochet with an uncanny resemblance to the actual figure,...

Born on Nov. 25, 1915, Augusto José Ramón Pinochet would rise through the ranks of the Chilean military and, having become commander-in-chief of the nation’s army, lead a coup against the country’s president Salvador Allende in 1973. This would kick off Pinochet’s political reign — and reign of terror — for the next 17 years. He’d escape persecution for the countless crimes committed during his regime and was unrepentant about his dictatorship (what were mass graves of dissidents but more “efficient ways of burials?”) up until his death in 2006.

Just four days ago was the 50th anniversary of the 1973 coup d’etat, when Augusto Pinochet came to absolute power in Chile. The Pinochet we all know and have heard of died in 2006, but El Conde, the new Netflix film, has a surprise for you. Pinochet is alive, and what happened in 2006, when Pinochet stopped his heart and pretended to die, was just one of his skills as a vampire. Yes, the Chilean dictator is actually a 250-year-old vampire who invites trouble after he is suspected of having been on a killing spree, feasting on the hearts of people. Vampires are known to do that. Eating hearts ensures that they grow young. This satirical black comedy, directed by Pablo Larrain, brings him back to familiar territory, dealing with Augusto Pinochet and the aftermath of his military dictatorship. In 2012, Larrain directed the critically acclaimed “No,” and here he is again dealing with ‘Pinochetism,...

I took some time off this week. Unfortunately, my wife and I lost our little puppy son, Logan, who was a big part of our lives for nine years. If you've been a regular reader of my writing on Daily Dead, chances are he was on my lap while it was being written. Reading comic books and writing and horror has always been a great source of comfort for me, so I wanted to share some news that has me really looking forward to November 8th: the date when Count Crowley returns in Count Crowley: Mediocre Midnight Monster Hunter. Details are below, along with a look at the main cover from Lukas Ketner and the variant from Francesco Francavilla:
Eager fright fans won't have to wait much longer for a new chapter starring their favorite horror host, for the incredible team of David Dastmalchian, Lukas Ketner, Lauren Affe, and...

From Renfield to The Last Voyage of the Demeter, we've recently seen some truly unique takes on Bram Stoker's iconic bloodsucking creation, and soon writer James Tynion IV and artist Martin Simmonds will introduce readers to their own eerie adaptation of Universal's 1931 film Dracula with their new comic book series Universal Monsters: Dracula. A partnership between Skybound and Universal Products & Experiences, Universal Monsters: Dracula #1 will be released in comic book shops on October 25th (just in time to read by candlelight on Halloween night), and following their exclusive reveal at Bloody Disgusting, we have a look at marvelously macabre preview pages featuring Renfield warning his doctor that "your blood belongs to the Master."

Pablo Larraín’s string of mostly 20th century biographical dramas hits a pinnacle of audacious brilliance with El Conde (The Count), a madly inspired reinvention of events embedded in the notion that longtime Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet became a vampire who ultimately tires of life and wants out after living some 250 years.
After playing it relatively straight and serious in their biopics of Princess Diana, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Pablo Neruda, the director and his shrewd and brilliant playwright collaborator Guillermo Calderón let their imaginations go wild (albeit rigorously so), and return with a sensational creation overflowing with a rush of startling notions that put this alternative look at a sinister ruling family on a top shelf all its own. Smart audiences worldwide will devour this bold, wildly irreverent take on its insidious subjects. After its festival debuts at Venice and Telluride, the film will make its Netflix home screen...

The following contains major spoilers for The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
If the horror genre has a grandfather, it’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula. First published in 1897, the epistolary novel follows a group of English socialites who cross paths with a centuries-old vampire traversing the continent in search of fresh victims. From Francis Ford Coppola and Werner Herzog to Stephen King and Mel Brooks, it seems nearly every horror creator has reimagined the legendary text. After more than two centuries and countless variations, you’d think there’d be nothing left on these literary bones.
Enter The Last Voyage of the Demeter: André Øvredal’s take on Stoker’s seventh chapter. A short, but pivotal episode in the vampire’s saga, this adaptation fleshes out the log of a doomed vessel and unearths an entirely new tale from the ashes of an old story.
Dracula begins in Transylvania.

The new horror film “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” was dubbed “Dracula on a Boat” by social media users, and the twist on the chapter from Bram Stoker’s iconic horror novel definitely did deliver on the premise of the age-old vampire feasting on the crew of an unlucky ship.
Introducing a monster of any kind — alien, werewolf, zombies — to a vehicle that can’t stop and can’t let anyone off is a tried-and-true horror formula. Here are some of the movies where the combo of “creature” + “claustrophobic form of transportation” worked and some where it ran aground.

Barbenheimer is back, baby!
After getting nudged down to No.3 by Warner Bros.' "Meg 2: The Trench" last weekend, Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" has reclaimed second place at the U.S. box office with an estimated $5.1 million Friday, which should result in a $17.2 million three-day gross. Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" is still the queen of the multiplexes in her fourth weekend at No. 1, pulling in $10 million on Friday and gunning for a $30 million three-day.
As for new releases, André Øvredal's atmospheric Dracula-on-a-boat flick, "Last Voyage of the Demeter," could only suck up an estimated $2.6 million on Friday, which does not bode well for the profitability of the $45 million-budgeted film, nor Universal's hopes for a rebooted Classic Monster franchise. Coming on the heels of Chris McKay's disappointingly anemic "Renfield," the studio might want to keep the Count coffin-bound for the foreseeable future.

“The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” which spotlights the doomed ship in Bram Stoker’s oft-adapted 1897 novel, is the second Dracula film released in 2023 after “Renfield.” Both take generous liberties with the source material, which brings up the question: Out of the 200-some films about the famous Count, which ones are the most faithful?
Here’s our ranking of some of the most popular, and a few lesser-known, Dracula adaptations.
Universal
8. Renfield (2023)
Pretty much the only thing this horror comedy has in common with the novel is Nicholas Hoult as the bug-eating title character and a delightfully campy Nicolas Cage as his bloodthirsty boss. The movie brings them both into the 21st century, makes Renfield an ass-kicking hero and swaps out Lucy and Mina for Awkwafina’s incorruptible cop.
Miramax
7. Dracula 2000 (2000)
The film begins with a shot of the wrecked Demeter and footprints in the sand as Dracula heads to town.

With The Last Voyage of the Demeter now in theaters, Dracula is once again on everyone’s mind. In it, Javier Botet plays a horrific version of the count that’s far removed from the recent, classic-style version played by Nicolas Cage in Renfield. This article contains major spoilers for "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" (and also for the 126-year-old novel "Dracula.")
"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" opens on a very familiar sight to those who've read (or are even vaguely familiar with) Bram Stoker's original novel: a foundering ship run aground on an English beach in the middle of a fierce rainstorm, without a single living soul left on board. As concerned onlookers descend upon the wreck, the very atmosphere fills with dread and fear once more and more rescuers realize that something very wrong has happened here. The discovery of the captain's log only confirms these suspicions, documenting an innocuous enough voyage that started out like any other ... before ending in abject tragedy and death. As someone reads through each journal entry, we flashback to the last voyage of the Demeter to pinpoint exactly where the journey went awry.

What do you think of when you think of Dracula? (Assuming you think about him at all; I know I do.) The vampire Count likely conjures up images of a tux and a cape; a suave, seductive presence who woos virginal women before sinking his fangs into their necks. But here's the thing: the debonair Drac is almost entirely an invention of the movies. In Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula is not a sexy guy who shows up at dinner parties dressed to the nines. He's a malevolent monster lurking in the shadows.
In fact, Dracula himself is barely in the novel that bears his name. After the first several chapters, in which an aged Dracula meets and imprisons Jonathan Harker in his castle, the vampire takes a powder and recedes into the background. Stoker's book is an epistolary novel, which means it's made up of diary entries, letters,...

This Last Voyage Of The Demeter article contains spoilers.
Anyone who has read Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, or seen almost any movies which have been adapted from it, knows the ending to director André Øvredal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter. It is one chapter, and an early one at that, which ultimately provides its titular vampire with a change of scenery. It has a full arc, and no one survives. It’s all in “The Captain’s Log,” with additional information cut from the outside perspective of a character who was never onboard. It really is the most frightening chapter of the book, and does indeed warrant its own individual telling. But we only get smatterings of it from Liam Cunningham’s Captain Eliot, who narrates the bookends of The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
While all the notes are here, Demeter’s basic plot immediately differs by adding several characters,...

Netflix has debuted the trailer for Pablo Larraín’s horror satire ‘El Conde.’
The movie is a dark comedy/horror that imagines a parallel universe inspired by the recent history of Chile. The film portrays Augusto Pinochet, a symbol of world fascism, as a vampire who lives hidden in a ruined mansion in the cold southern tip of the continent. Feeding his appetite for evil to sustain his existence.
After two hundred and fifty years of life, Pinochet has decided to stop drinking blood and abandon the privilege of eternal life. He can no longer bear that the world remembers him as a thief. Despite the disappointing and opportunistic nature of his family, he finds new inspiration to continue living a life of vital and counterrevolutionary passion through an unexpected relationship.
Directed by Larrain, Chilean actors Jaime Vadell, Gloria Münchmeyer, Alfredo Castro and Paula Luchsinger star. They are joined by Catalina Guerra,...

There’s a reason that Dracula has endured as a figure of fascination for horror filmmakers for more than a century. Bram Stoker’s vampire creation proves endlessly malleable, subject to all sorts of depictions from actors as far afield as Max Schreck, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, Frank Langella, Gary Oldman and, most recently, Nicolas Cage. The role is catnip, especially since the Count can be as sexy as he is menacing, as seductive as he is deadly.
That is, until his portrayal in André Ovredal’s Gothic horror film based on a single chapter, “The Captain’s Log,” from Stoker’s 1897 classic novel. As portrayed by Javier Botet, this is a vampire who seems more a feral wild creature than anything resembling a figure who could reasonably pass among human society. He’s one of the viscerally scariest Draculas ever seen onscreen, but he’s also one of the dullest.

In Bram Stoker's 1897 novel "Dracula," the titular Count travels from his remote castle in the Carpathian Mountains to a new home in England on a ship called the Demeter. He travels with multiple coffins filled with earth and is sealed in a coffin of his own. Weeks after departing, the Demeter drifts into Whitby Harbor. No one is on board. Instantly, readers knew the story: Dracula -- requiring human blood to survive -- sneaked out of his coffin at night to pick off the Demeter's crew one by one. The reader is left to imagine their harrowing experience.
In André Øvredal's upcoming, long-gestating film "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," however, one no longer needs to imagine. The film is set entirely on the Demeter, depicting the crew discovering their dwindling numbers and the slow realization that a demonic vampire may be on board. The film stars Corey Hawkins,...

I don't know about you, but I love me a Nosferatu. With their shiny bald heads, sinewy claws, and animalistic nature, they are the antithesis of everything Count Dracula. Gone are allure, seduction, and charm, instead replaced by gargoyle-like beings who only have one thing on their mind; your blood.
With inspiration dating back to 1922, these beastly beings have been cropping up in film and television every few years, when audiences seemingly get tired of the Count's debonair musings. And if you're like me, you'll find yourself fist-pumping every time a new Nosferatu is born.
Here are 13 Unforgettable Nosferatu-Style vampires to sink your teeth into.

The animated Netflix series based on the Castlevania video game franchise wrapped up back in 2021 after a four season, 32 episode run – but if you were left wanting to see more Castlevania after watching that show, you’re in luck. Stars: Hannaj Bang Bendz, Dean Marshall, Sean Cronin, Mark Topping, Ayvianna Snow, Carl Wharton, Jasmine Sumner | Written and Directed by Steve Lawson
Amidst a busy filmography, Wrath of Dracula marks the third 2023 released feature for writer/director Steve Lawson – including the interesting Ripper’s Revenge. Inspired by Bram Stoker’s iconic 1897 novel, the story begins with Mina Harker (Hannaj Bang Bendz) receiving a letter from her husband, Jonathan Harker (Dean Marshall), about how he’s a prisoner at Castle Dracula. She travels to Transylvania intending to help her beloved, where she discovers a decimated village fearful of the mysterious Count Dracula (Sean Cronin), and the man determined to hunt the Count, Van Helsing (Mark Topping).
Considering how often vampires are brought to the screen, particularly when adapting Stoker’s novel, it becomes difficult to find a way to make these new takes stand apart within a crowded field. Despite putting the...

Actor Nicolas Cage finally gave his spin on the world’s most iconic vampire, Dracula, in this year’s Renfield. Director James Wan (Insidious, Saw, The Conjuring) recently revealed on Instagram that Cage nearly played the bloodsucking Count just over a decade ago.
In 2009, Wan revealed that he was in the early process of adapting Castlevania for the big screen. Wan told Bloody Disgusting out of Sdcc that “I’m very fresh on this project, so it’s early stages and I’m still trying to work things out, but the producers love my vision for it. I’ll be working on the script with a writer to give it a new spin, different to the previous versions. This will have my stamp on it which Konami is very excited about.”
While those plans didn’t pan out, it turns out that Wan always knew Cage had an excellent Dracula performance in him.

Pablo Larraín is in Italy where the prolific Chilean auteur – whose body of work comprises “Spencer” with Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana and “Jackie,” in which Natalie Portman portrayed Jackie Kennedy, as well as scathing criticisms of the Chilean dictatorship “Post Mortem,” “No,” and “Neruda” – is being honored by Italy’s National Museum of Cinema with a lifetime achievement award.
Prior to his masterclass on Tuesday Larraín spoke to Variety about his two latest projects: Netflix movie “El Conde” which is tipped to launch from Venice, and “Maria,” the biopic of late great soprano Maria Callas, to be played by Angelina Jolie, which is now in prep.
I’d like to start by asking you about your ties to Torino, where as part of the tribute there has been a screening of “Tony Manero,” your second film, which won two prizes at the Torino Film Festival in 2008.
It’s very beautiful to me.
