Ahead of the film’s October release, Apple has shared a first look at best actress hopeful Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon.
In the clip, Gladstone goes toe-to-toe with Leonardo DiCaprio, playing recently returned war veteran Ernest Burkhart who is aggressively trying to court Gladstone’s Mollie.
The Martin Scorsese-directed historical epic, based on the David Grann novel of the same name, chronicles a series of murders of the Osage people following an oil boom and the subsequent FBI investigations into the killings, which became known as the Reign of Terror. Mollie and Ernest sit at the center of the story, which follows their relationship as Mollie’s family members become victims of the murders.
“The revelation for many will be the wondrous Lily Gladstone as Mollie Kyle, the woman unfortunate enough to marry gold-digger Ernest,” reads The Hollywood Reporter review of the movie out of the Cannes Film Festival.

The calendar says that we’re still in September, which means there’s still roughly half a year until the 2024 Academy Awards. But it’s difficult to imagine that there will be a more significant shocker this Oscar season than the one that surfaced Tuesday when it was revealed that Lily Gladstone will campaign as a lead rather than supporting actress for her acclaimed role in the Martin Scorsese-directed epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” that wowed the critics at Cannes and breaks in theaters wide on October 20.
In the film, Gladstone plays a member of the Osage Nation named Mollie Burkhart, a real-life indigenous woman whose fellow tribespeople and family members were being murdered at an alarming rate akin to genocide. It’s based on the devastating true story of the Osage who were slaughtered for their oil money in 1920s Oklahoma, as told in David Grann’s 2017 true crime book,...

Leonardo DiCaprio was recast in “Killers of the Flower Moon”.
The actor was joined by his on-screen wife, Lily Gladstone — who plays Mollie in the flick alongside his character Ernest Burkhart — for a new British Vogue cover shoot.
A synopsis for the much-talked about Apple TV+ film reads, “Members of the Osage tribe in the United States are murdered under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s, sparking a major F.B.I. investigation involving J. Edgar Hoover.”
“It just didn’t feel like it got to the heart of it… We weren’t immersed in the Osage story.” Credit: Craig McDean/British Vogue

Oscar season is always full of twists and turns, and the biggest one yet just dropped with “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Variety has learned exclusively that Lily Gladstone’s work as Mollie Burkhart, an Indigenous woman at the center of a sinister plot in Martin Scorsese’s crime epic, will be campaigned for the Oscars in best actress, instead of supporting where many pundits had speculated. She will campaign alongside her Oscar-winning co-star and executive producer, Leonardo DiCaprio.
Based on David Grann’s 2017 non-fiction book “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI,” the film tells the tragic true story of members of the Osage tribe who were murdered under suspicious circumstances during the 1920s.

Updated to clarify: Leonardo DiCaprio has only words of praise for Killers of the Flower Moon breakout star Lily Gladstone.
In the film, DiCaprio and Gladstone portray real-life husband and wife Ernest and Mollie Burkhart, a couple living on the Osage Reservation in 1920s Oklahoma, a tumultuous time in history. Gladstone herself is Native American, and grew up on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation near the Montana-Canada border.
“Lily is absolutely astonishing in this movie,” DiCaprio told British Vogue in its October cover story featuring DiCaprio and Gladstone “She carries the entire film and the story.”
Gladstone initially did a selftape audition before Covid shut everything down, she previously told Interview magazine. She said the project had gone quiet and she assumed she had blown the audition, but got a request to Zoom with Scorsese about a year later. DiCaprio was not on that call, and she did not do a reading with the actor,...

Leonardo DiCaprio finally weighed in on the massive “Killers of the Flower Moon” rewrite that changed the direction of Martin Scorsese’s latest historical epic. The script originally centered on FBI agent Tom White, who DiCaprio was supposed to play, as he investigates a string of murders among the Osage Nation in the 1920s. That perspective kept the film in line with the majority of David Grann’s 2017 book of the same name, but something about telling “Flower Moon” from the FBI’s point of view did not sit right with DiCaprio or Scorsese.
“It just didn’t feel like it got to the heart of it,” DiCaprio recently told British Vogue in a joint interview with co-star Lily Gladstone. “We weren’t immersed in the Osage story. There was this tiny, small scene between Mollie and Ernest that provoked such emotion in us at the reading, and we just...

Leonardo DiCaprio and his Killers of the Flower Moon co-star Lily Gladstone have teamed once again, this time as cover stars for the October issue of British Vogue.
In an interview conducted ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike, the two open up about their collaboration in Martin Scorsese’s epic story in which they play real-life husband and wife Ernest and Mollie Burkhart, a couple living on the Osage Reservation in 1920s Oklahoma amid a tragic time. It’s a rare showing for DiCaprio, who rarely sits for lengthy interviews or covers. He does so this time with Gladstone for writer Afua Hirsch and a shoot by photographer Craig McDean with styling by the mag’s Edward Enninful.

Bad guys tend to have a good time at the Oscars. From Christoph Waltz‘s 2010 “Inglourious Basterds” win for Best Supporting Actor to Anthony Hopkins‘ iconic 1992 Best Actor win for “The Silence of the Lambs,” you can always count on Oscar voters to take notice of a villain.
While those two examples are fictional, some actors have also had Oscar luck by playing real-life killers. For example, Charlize Theron won for playing Aileen Wuornos. Wuornos murdered seven men between 1989 and 1990 while she was a prostitute in Florida. She shot and robbed the seven men, who Wuornos claimed were clients who had either raped or attempted to rape, claiming self-defense. However, she was sentenced to death and executed in 2002 for six of the murders. Theron took home the Best Actress Oscar in 2004 for her transformative performance as the killer in “Monster.”
