As Kevin Hart sat in the audience with family and friends for The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize, there were many jokes about his height, quips about his wealth and jabs at his productivity.
What there was very little of was anything political, reflecting Hart’s own style that tends to avoid such topical humor.
Chris Rock did have one moment, though.
“The Mark Twain Award this year. If Trump wins, next year will be the Mark Fuhrman award,” Rock said.
As the audience laughed, Rock added, “It’s going to be nothing but banjos up there.”
He also was among the comics who did a bit of roasting of Hart. “Look at that smile,” Rock said. “You got that second wife happiness.” Hart, surrounded by his wife and kids, laughed.
Like others, though, Rock talked of Hart’s rise to become one of the most successful comedians of all time,...

Chris Brown is claiming the 2024 NBA Celebrity All-Star Game is singing one of his most famous songs: Say Goodbye.
The singer said he received an invitation to appear in the game, but a sponsor nixed those plans. Brown has constantly tried to make amends for a domestic abuse incident in 2009 against his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, and has generated other negative headlines from legal issues.
This time, Brown once again faced the consequences of past actions.
“I was asked by the NBA to play in the all star game this year! There was no need to worry that Reba McEntire might mess up or bring any unnecessary flourishes to “The Star-Spangled Banner” when she performed the National Anthem prior to the Super Bowl on Sunday evening. Unlike anyone else who’d done it prior to the Bowl or any other major NFL game in recent memory, she brought a full half-century’s experience of singing the anthem to the occasion.
The year 2024 marks a special anniversary for the country superstar and her association with the song: She is often said to have been “discovered” 50 years ago when she sang it at the 1974 National Finals Rodeo in her home state of Oklahoma, when she was just 19.
McEntire’s latest rendition of the anthem was more fully orchestrated than some other recent versions — or even her own past readings — have been, with a pre-recorded horn section sending the song toward a big climax.

Andra Day delivered a rousing performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” on Sunday ahead of Super Bowl Lviii.
The Grammy winner and past Oscar nominee took to the field during the pregame portion to sing the song dressed in a two-piece beige pantsuit adorned with gold bangles, rings and earrings. She was backed by a chorus of singers dressed in all black.
Standing behind them were the 2023 nominees for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, which honors a player for the achievements on and off the field, focusing on their philanthropic endeavors and community efforts. The 2023 winner is Cameron Heyward of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who gave a brief speech ahead of Day’s performance.

It’s been almost 20 years since Mariah Carey last won a Grammy, so when she received the Global Impact Award from the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective, she offered a dose of her signature comical shade.
“Is this a real Grammy? I haven’t seen one in soooooo long,” she said Thursday night as she held the award.
“It’s weird. I don’t know,” Carey continued while laughing as the audience at the Fairmont Century Plaza cheered her on. “We’ll figure out what this is later.”
Carey is easily one of the best-selling acts of all-time and holds the record for most No. 1 hits — 20 — by a solo artist. She’s been nominated for 34 Grammys, winning five: best new artist and best female pop vocal performance (“Vision of Love”) in 1991, as well as three R&b honors at the 2006 ceremony for “We Belong Together” and The Emancipation of Mimi.

Justin Timberlake‘s “Selfish” is a lot funkier than John Lennon’s songs. However, Timberlake said “Selfish” was influenced by a cover of one of John’s solo songs. The “Imagine” singer explained why the tune in question was so honest and revealing.
‘Selfish’ singer Justin Timberlake implied Generation Z doesn’t know John Lennon songs
During a 2024 interview with Apple Music, Timberlake discussed listening to a John cover. “A friend of mine, who’s also my music director, who’s probably a friend of the whole family over there, Adam Blackstone, he was doing these small jazz nights at a place in LA,” Timberlake recalled. “And he invited me to come down and he said, ‘Hey, man.’ He was like, ‘You want to come up and sing something?’
“And I randomly threw out, ‘Oh, yeah, let’s do Donny Hathaway’s cover of ‘Jealous Guy’ by Lennon,'” he said.

The husband-and-wife duo the War and Treaty will have a big presence during Grammy week, parlaying their nomination for best new artist into multiple performances on- and off-screen throughout the days leading up to and including the telecast. But the Grammys were destined not to be the only awards show this season that would afford them a high profile. On Monday night’s Emmys, the couple joined Charlie Puth for a properly emotional In Memoriam segment that segued from the country-soul duo offering harmonies on Puth’s elegiac “See You Again” to taking more of the lead on a balladic version of the “Friends” theme,” “I’ll Be There,” that took it from Rembrandts territory to the land of Ashford and Simpson.

It’s 2003 and Jay-Z is planning a farewell concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate his retirement from music.
But his bass player is unavailable. Adam Blackstone, a jack-of-all-trades who plays bass, drums, piano, organ, tuba and sousaphone — and is also a songwriter, producer, composer and everything else under the musical sun — is more than ready to step in.
Twenty years later, Blackstone, now 40, is still working closely with Jay-Z; both are Emmy winners for last year’s hip-hop-heavy Super Bowl halftime show. And the musician who has helped everyone from Rihanna to Justin Timberlake shine is stepping into his own limelight.

Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.
Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.
Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.
That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.
Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.
The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is among the 19 entries in the Music Direction category. He submitted “The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium,” an HBO special that aired in February. If nominated, he’s likely to be up against such past winners as Adam Blackstone and Rickey Minor (“The Oscars”).

Apple TV+’s new music competition series My Kind of Country couldn’t have chosen better Country music stars as season one scouts and mentors than Mickey Guyton, Jimmie Allen, and Orville Peck. All three understand the need for more inclusion within the world of Country music and are willing to share their experiences with talented artists from around the globe who are hoping to break through in the genre.
Four-time Grammy nominee and Time’s 2022 Breakthrough Artist of the Year Mickey Guyton believes Country music is a universal language and genre, and that it’s important to reach out and discover amazing artists who might not otherwise have an opportunity to find a wider audience. The upcoming Apple TV+ competition series “My Kind of Country,” executive-produced by Kacey Musgraves and Reese Witherspoon, is not just going to be a genre-specific knockoff of “American Idol” or “The Voice,” it’s clear from a first trailer released Friday. Fostering inclusiveness of every sort looks to be as high on the agenda as finding unknown talent, as is made apparent not just from the YouTube teaser but the previously known trio of celebrity talent scouts — Jimmie Allen, Mickey Guyton and Orville Peck — plus a just-released rundown of the dozen competing aspirants.

The series, Witherspoon says in the trailer, was conceived of while she and Musgraves were “talking about how country music should stop limiting people, and start opening doors.” And as part of that, the contestants will be mentored by three stars who themselves don’t fit...

Saturday night’s 54th annual NAACP Image Awards once again brought together a star-studded group of nominees across TV and film (despite the rainstorm flooding and causing power outages in several areas across Los Angeles).
But some of the best moments of the show, hosted by Queen Latifah and held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, didn’t make it to air. With The Hollywood Reporter on the carpet and inside the room, here are the top things the TV cameras didn’t show.
When the Red Carpet Becomes a Runway
Zendaya and her stylist, image architect Law Roach, appeared on the carpet just before it closed, but that didn’t stop every camera from rising to attention in order to capture what was sure to be an inspiring, archival look. The two are known for their creative chemistry (Zendaya’s awareness of how to strut, pose, and find her angles...

Before capturing her first pair of Grammys last year, R&b star Jazmine Sullivan was the female artist with the most nominations without winning, tied with Björk.
So, a year later at a pre-Grammy event, Sullivan joked with the audience as she sang songs from her critically acclaimed, Grammy-winning project, Heaux Tales.
“I think I won last year for best R&b…,” she said coyly with her mouth open. “I won? Did I win a…? I think I won…,” she continued, laughing as the crowd cheered her on.
Sullivan won best R&b album for Heaux Tales, her daring and bold album that explores feminism, sexuality, classism and body shaming. She also tied Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open” to win best R&b performance for “Pick Up Your Feelings,” which she performed to close her four-song set at the Grey Goose x GRAMMYs: Sound Sessions Brunch.
