Jim Wiseman’s Sky original documentary “Williams and Mansell: Red 5” is set for a debut on Sky Documentaries and Now on July 8. Featuring some of the biggest names in F1, it follows Nigel Mansell and the Williams Racing team’s rise to fame told through the eyes of his team, family and drivers including Jenson Button, Damon Hill and Karun Chandhok.
Mansell grew up in England in the 1960s, dreaming of becoming a professional race car driver, despite not having the financial means for it, while Frank Williams was realizing his own dream at the company he founded, Williams Grand Prix Engineering. The two joined forces, and after years of trying to win together, Mansell left to join Ferrari and then ultimately retired from racing after years of ups and downs, without ever winning the Formula One Drivers’ Championship. But seemingly overnight, he came out of retirement and re-joined Williams Racing.

F1 racing is surging in popularity in the United States. Spurred by the popularity of Netflix’s Formula 1: Drive to Survive, the high-octane docu-series now filming its fifth season, new audiences in the U.S. are finally finding a sport that’s wildly popular across the globe. As a result, the U.S. now boasts a record three F1 races on its calendar: one in Miami, held for the first time last May; one in Austin, on October 23; and a new race in Las Vegas, scheduled for November 23, 2023.

Touching reflections from his family and home movie footage make for an intimate biography of the F1 star, if one that leaves his flaws unexamined
‘I miss him every day, but Michael is here,” says Corinna Schumacher at the end of this Netflix documentary, blinking back tears as she talks about life with her husband since he suffered a devastating brain injury while skiing in 2013. That accident is awkwardly and glaringly unmentioned for most of this nearly two-hour film about his life, though of course you’re watching it all – the green-eyed boy wonder of Formula One, his successes, the rivalries and close shaves – in a brace position, waiting for the tragedy to come. Then, in the final 10 minutes, Corinna and the couple’s children, Gina and Mick (a F1 driver like his dad), speak about their loss.

1: Life on the Limit may be a veritable who's who of Formula 1 - featuring contributions from world drivers' champions such as John Surtees, Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher, Jody Scheckter, Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel to name but a few - but it's really the story of two men, Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley.
It's easy to be cynical about both Bernie and Max - particularly when you think about some of the things they've hit headlines for away from the track. But 1 - which uses the tension between speed and safety as its angle - sheds light on their determination to improve safety that some younger followers of motorsport - this writer included - may not have fully appreciated. With their sitcom House Of Fools recently announced, we celebrate the enduring comedy brilliance of Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer...
Readers of a certain age may remember the first time they saw Vic and Bob on television. For some, it may have been the 25th of May 1990, the fateful night "Britain's top light entertainer and singer" Vic Reeves burst onto screens with an absurdly fast, lounge-act rendition of The Monkees' I'm A Believer. In the background, his cohort Bob Mortimer looked on admiringly, dressed in the stovepipe hat and vast sideburns of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
For many viewers, this was a first glimpse inside the strange world of a comedy duo who'd already garnered a cult following in London pubs and clubs in the mid-1980s. Having impressed the likes of Jonathan Ross and Alan Yentob with their surreal, apparently semi-improvised comedy, Vic and...

Sky Sports F1 is Sky’s latest channel to hit the network and it kicks off next weekend at the Australian Grand Prix. Since I’m a rather big F1 fan and this has a link to TV I thought I’d put up these great little featurettes that Sky have just released introducing us all to their new team of presenters. Martin Brundle and Ted Kravitz have both left the BBC to join Sky’s coverage and they are joined by former Formula One World Champion, Damon Hill, Natalie Pinkham, Anthony Davidson, Steve Rider, David Croft, Georgie Thompson and Simon Lazenby.
In the interviews, they talk about their favourite drivers, favourite races and what they’re looking forward to in the upcoming season. I have no doubt that Sky will nail the broadcast of this wonderful sport and with this brilliant team of experts, it’ll surely be epic!

Seoul, South Korea, 1988. An Olympic Games that would define the sporting career of Great Britain’s Dennis Stewart. As the 28 year old Dudley born lad stepped onto the mat for what was to be the pinnacle of his Judo career, Stewart fought and won Olympic bronze for his country. Success enough for some it would seem, this was just the beginning of the Stewart sporting legacy. Some 7 years later, Dennis became the proud father of baby boy Max, and a near quarter century after his own Olympic success, watched his son win his first major championship medal as he took home Silver at the European Junior Judo Championships last year.
The saying ‘Like father, like son’ rings no truer than when watching these two together. Playfully wrestling on the mat in what appears a routine training scuffle, I ask Dennis whether he’d let Max throw him to the mat for a photo.

Made in a similar style to 2005 Bob Dylan documentary No Direction Home, the great Martin Scorsese has turned his documentary camera on this most reluctant and private member of The Beatles. As a George Harrison fan – and as one of the few people that actually owns early 80s albums like Gone Troppo and Somewhere in England – it’s been a long time coming. The underrated guitarist, who passed away after a long battle with cancer in 2001, deserves some love and Marty gives it to him over a shamelessly celebratory 3 1/2 hours of archive footage, interviews and beautiful still photographs divided into two parts. Entitled George Harrison: Living in the Material World, it’s today released on Blu-ray.
The first part concerns the young Harrison: growing up in Liverpool, becoming a Teddy boy, joining the band with John and Paul – after impressing Lennon with his skills as a guitar soloist on the...

The legal battle over the publication of a book about BBC's famed character The Stig has ended, with the network losing the case against publisher HarperCollins. The High Court in London has refused to grant BBC an injunction blocking the book.
Last week, BBC fired off a legal action against the book publisher, arguing that HarperCollins' plans to release a book about their famous yet unidentified character would breach confidentiality obligations.
The Stig is the anonymous "Top Gear" racing driver who has become famous for his white racing overall outfit and dark-visored helmet. His identity has been kept a secret on BBC.
Several racing drivers have been rumored to be The Stig, including F1 champs Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher. However, ex-Formula Three driver Ben Collins is the name that stuck. The first driver, Perry McCarthy, was fired in 2003 after his identity was exposed.
