The upcoming Netflix series Selena will feature The Walking Dead actress Christian Serratos as the famous singer, but is Serratos actually singing? So far, there haven't been any official interviews or announcements about whether or not she's doing her own singing. We suspect we'll have to wait until closer to the show's Dec. 4 release date for more details, but here's what we've been able to gather so far.
Selena will tell the story of Tejano singer Selena, who achieved a rapid rise to fame before her infamous murder in 1995. It seems like a certainty that the Netflix series, which does not yet have a debut date other than "sometime in 2020," will depict Selena's life with a high degree of realism and detail - her sister, Suzette Quintanilla, is among the executive producers on the show. The series will be split into two "parts" or seasons, and the first part will consist of six episodes,...

“The Good Doctor” actor Nicholas Gonzalez says Latinx representation in media is often stereotyped, and even when it isn’t, the characters are only temporary.
“I was thankful to be … doing a very positive portrayal of a high-achieving cardiothoracic surgeon who happened to be Latino, which I think was a very good representation of the heights we can ascend to, those kinds of roles we’re talking about having, and they killed him,” the actor said during SAG-AFTRA’s Race & Storytelling: Through the Latino Lens virtual panel on Tuesday. “We don’t last.”
Moderated by “Good Day LA” anchor Amanda Salas, panelists also included actors Dan Bucatinsky and Nicholas Gonzalez, casting director Carla Hool, Broken English Productions president Jolene Rodriguez and “One Day at a Time” showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett.
Latinx roles make up 3-5% of the lead parts in Hollywood despite making up around 17% of the overall United States population.

This year, the motion picture academy achieved its five-year goal of doubling the number of women among its membership. In all, 819 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

Exclusive: Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired U.S. rights to the critically acclaimed immigration feature The Infiltrators. Directed by Alex Rivera and Cristina Ibarra, the film made its world premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival where it went on to won the Audience Award: Next and the Next Innovator Prize. The Infiltrators is a very timely docu-thriller that tells the true story of young immigrants who get detained by Border Patrol, and put in a shadowy for-profit detention center — on purpose. Marco (Maynor Alvarado) and Viri (Vida‘s Chelsea Rendon) are members of the National Immigrant Youth Alliance, a group of radical Dreamers who are on a mission to stop deportations. And the best place to stop deportations, they believe, is in detention. However, when they try to pull off a prison break in reverse,...

Writer-director Daniel Sawka’s “Icebox” has been acquired by HBO Films. The feature, produced by James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films and co-financed with Endeavor Content, is set to debut Dec. 7 on HBO.
The film tells the story of Anthony Gonzalez’s Óscar, a 12-year-old Honduran boy who is forced to flee his home and seek asylum in the United States, only to find himself trapped in the U.S. immigration system.
“I have seldom seen a movie so of the moment – it’s almost reportage,” said Amato. “’Icebox’ gives viewers not only an opportunity to witness what it’s like inside these migrant detention centers, but also to feel the emotions of the children, revealing a world that many journalists and citizens have not yet been able to sufficiently penetrate.”
Brooks and Gracie Films teamed with Sawka to expand the project from a master’s thesis short into a feature-length film.

During Paramount’s recent press day for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, Daily Dead had the opportunity to sit down and chat with the film’s trio of stars- Andrew Jacobs, Jorge Diaz and Gabrielle Walsh- as well as writer/director Christopher Landon about their experiences working on the latest entry in the Paranormal Activity franchise.
During the roundtable interviews, we heard more about Landon’s experience stepping behind the camera and finding the stars for The Marked Ones and the cast chatted about the challenges of working on a found footage movie, some of the scenes that didn’t make it into the final version of the film (including a different ending) and more.
You’ve been involved with this series since Paranormal Activity 2. How was it for you to get to step behind the camera this time for a Paranormal Activity movie and direct in addition to writing?...
