I am not sure if it has something to do with the release of another Miyazaki film this year, but the whole anime industry actually seems to experience another surge, with the titles of quality coming one after the other. That this level actually applies to series that continue, new ones, based on manga or original, remakes and relaunches, and the streaming ones is probably the most astonishing feat for 2023, in one of the best seasons in anime we have seen lately.

The Demon Slayer franchise continues to do everything that needs to be done to take it to the top of the shonen category, with the series definitely holding one among the highest places of the category currently. And although the animation and the artform in general is probably the main reason, it would be also interesting to see how the third season fares in terms of context.

Following the first part of the second season, revolving around the Mugen Train, the Entertainment District Arc continues after Kyojuro's shocking death, with Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke accompanying the annoyingly flamboyant Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui to their next mission – infiltrating the famed Yoshiwara red-light district, where demons are said to reside.

Before that, however, Tanjiro visits Kyojuro's father, in a rather dramatic sequence that shows that Shinjuro, who used to be the flame Hashira himself, is now a violent alcoholic. A revelation revolving around Tanjiro's earring does happen, though, bringing us to the main dish of the part. Uzui tells the three young men that he has three wives, kunoichis, that have infiltrated Yoshiwara in order to follow on demon activity, but he has not heard from them for some time, which is the reason he has come to the area.

The domestic box office isn’t going to get interesting until next weekend when Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II and Disney’s Cruella launch the summer season. From that point on, we largely won’t have any weekends where the major studios are taking a break from releasing wide entries, which is the case this weekend as Lionsgate’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw repeats in its second frame with $1.38M yesterday, -63%, and an expected 3-day of $4.7M, -46% (actually a pretty good hold for a horror film which typically drops -60% or greater) and a running total of $15.9M. Spiral is booked at 2,997 theaters (+186). All the action is overseas where Universal’s F9 is heading to $160M this weekend in 8 markets, charged by China where it’s set to become the second biggest opener for the studio and the Fast franchise, already counting $105M. F9 parks itself at U.

It’s a great weekend at the US box office, even by pre-pandemic standards. Two movies, both R-rated, aren’t squashing one another, but equally set to gross over $19M apiece this weekend. We’re talking about New Line/HBO Max’s Mortal Kombat and Funimation/Aniplex’s Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train. Seriously, this is amazing box office results in the wake of Warner’s $48M-plus Easter 5-day win with Godzilla vs. Kong, considering 58% of U.S. and Canada’s 5,8K theaters are open, NYC is operating at 33% capacity, and Canada is only 20% open. Both movies are blowing away expectations where was around $10M for Demon Slayer and $10M-$12M for Mortal Kombat. I heard best case scenario for the latter was $15M, but the reboot of the classic Midway game, which finally delivers a lot of blood,...

After breaking all-time box office records in Japan late last year, the anime adaptation Demon Slayer – Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train hits North American cinemas on Friday via Aniplex of America and Funimation. Based on the Shonen Jump manga and Ufotable/Aniplex 2019 anime TV series, it picks up where the first season left off and takes place chiefly on a train — although an Inception-flavored plotline gives added dream action.
There’s little chance for the uninitiated to catch up before being thrust into the Haruo Sotozaki-directed story. Demon slayers Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu and Inosuke join upper-rank slayer Rengoku on board the mysterious Mugen Train. Their hope is to find a destructive demon who’s targeted slayers in the past. The passengers are at risk, each falling asleep when their tickets get punched by the guard, and the slayers aren’t immune to a similar fate.

You’re either already on the “Demon Slayer” train or you’re not, and the hit Japanese feature — arriving stateside having surpassed “Spirited Away” as the highest-grossing anime movie of all time — is hardly the vehicle for the popular franchise to pick up new passengers. That doesn’t mean the action-packed toon won’t appeal to those curious to check out the sensation that has earned more than $415 million internationally. But .
Produced by the same team at Ufotable, “Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train” looks even more rudimentary than its small-screen counterpart, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba,” which has amassed a cult following among Funimation, Crunchyroll and Netflix subscribers in the U.S. The slight downgrade in quality may come as a surprise to those expecting slicker visuals from the theatrical blockbuster. At times, the imagery hardly qualifies as animation, coming across as a sequence of still drawings: fixed expressions...

“Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train,” the animated movie that holds the record as the highest-grossing film to ever open in Japan, will now hit theaters in North America.
Last year, “Demon Slayer” took the crown (during a pandemic!) from Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved “Spirited Away” which held the title in Japan for 19 years, grossing $354.9 million in Japan. It became the fastest movie — live-action or animated — to surpass $100 million at the Japanese box office after only 10 days and is the most successful IMAX release ever in Japan.
The anime film will now open in the U.S. and Canada on April 23, including in 4Dx and on IMAX screens, and the film will be available in both an English language dub and as a subtitled version. It will then debut on digital beginning June 22, with pre-orders beginning April 26. Check out the subtitled trailer for “Demon Slayer – The Movie” above.

Anime Sensation ‘Demon Slayer: Mugen Train’ Sets U.S. Release After Breaking Japan Box Office Record
“Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” (official title “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train”) is prepping for its U.S. release after dominating the box office charts in Japan last year. Aniplex of America and Funimation have announced they are teaming up for the U.S. and Canada release of “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” starting Friday, April 23, 2021. The release includes 4Dx theaters and IMAX locations. The film will be available in both a subtitled version and an English-language one. Tickets for showtimes will go on sale April 9.
Directed by Haruo Sotozaki from a story by Koyoharu Gotoge, “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” is set after the events of the wildly popular 2019 anime television series “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.” The show centered around a young man’s search for a cure to save his sister, who turned into a demon after their family was slaughtered by demons. Cartoons aren’t just for kids anymore. Funimation’s animated film “Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train,” based on the popular Japanese TV series, is hoping to become the rare R-rated Oscar nominee for Best Animated Feature. The last such movie to pull off this feat was “Anomalisa” (2015), a stop-motion picture filled with swearing, nudity and sex; it lost to the much more family-friendly “Inside Out.” Can “Demon Slayer” make Oscar history by becoming the first R-rated toon to win the award? (Watch the trailer above.)
“Demon Slayer” is recommended for adults due to its excessive violence and gore, but that’s not necessarily a hurdle that will stop it from earning Academy Awards love. After all, violent movies like “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Joker” and “1917” all took home Oscars just last year. In American culture, violence has always been much more palatable to audiences than sex and nudity,...

Monday Update, writethru after Sunday 9:43Am post: To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Chinese People’s Volunteers Army entering the Korean War, the Middle Kingdom released epic The Sacrifice this weekend. The locally-titled Jin Gang Chuan grossed an estimated $53M in its three-day bow. While not a record start for the year in the market, the actioner could hold well for the next weeks that currently see no major new releases.
The Sacrifice boasts a strong pedigree — it’s co-directed by The Eight Hundred’s Guan Hu, The Wandering Earth’s Frant Gwo and Brotherhood Of Blades‘ Lu Yang and stars Wu Jing of Wolf Warrior fame. The launch was somewhat lower than expected given all that talent. It’s carrying a 9.4 on ticketing platform Maoyan, and a 6.7 on Douban.
