Filmmaking is incredibly hard work, said everybody who's ever made one for our enjoyment. It’s especially a trial by fire for inexperienced movie magicians, hoping that the wand will strike at least once or twice and that they just survive. With his reputation as a BTS guru with Blue Underground and Dark Sky Films in full swing, Severin Films’ David Gregory set out to make his feature debut, Plague Town (2008)—a tense homage to classic British and foreign horror infused with a fresh feel for the present. And now, a Blu from Severin that houses not only a surprisingly effective chiller, but also behind-the-scenes features that painstakingly showcase a vision dragged kicking and screaming all the way to the screening room.
It is odd for me to be discussing a film this recent. However, it makes perfect sense in context to the creators; Gregory and his co-writer John Cregan...

A California woman whose estranged husband killed their two young children and then hung himself around Father’s Day weekend says she “sought help on numerous occasions” before the murder-suicide — without success.

A true grindhouse maverick who hates happy endings, Jim VanBebber has made a name for himself in the world of low-budget, independent exploitation cinema as a writer/director and sometimes actor.
Since his first feature, Deadbeat at Dawn (1988), his gritty, outlaw style of filmmaking has generated films that are unapologetic in their realism and singular in their vision.
In 2004 VanBebber took on Charlie Manson. Shot over four years, The Manson Family is a documentary-style (though semi-fictional) look at the Manson cult filled with lurid sex, shocking violence and murderous flower power. For its 10th anniversary The Manson Family is being unleashed nationwide complete with VanBebber's Kickstarter-fueled short Gator Green (get theater listings here). A special edition Blu-ray release will follow on May 7th by Severin Films, which will include the short and a documentary on the making of The Manson Family, entitled The VanBebber Family.

Devolved is the debut feature from Severin Films co-founder, John Cregan. This isn't his first time behind the camera, though. Like any good independent director, he's done a bunch of shorts, and there are always all of the extra features that he's worked on with Severin Films and the other companies with whom they collaborate. All of that extra work helps his film go from a micro budget so-so potboiler to a pretty darned decent little satire. For all of you who are/were picked on in high school and grade school, this film is for you. When a whale watching boat sinks, its passengers make their way to a deserted island. The group is split evenly between the populars and the nots. The populars are basically...

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Meskada" (2010)
Directed by Josh Sternfeld
Released by Anchor Bay Entertainment
When this thriller premiered at Tribeca this past spring, Alison Willmore wrote, "the second film from writer/director Josh Sternfeld ("Winter Solstice") has ambitions reaching beyond being a straightforward police procedural," though critics, including her, were mixed about the end result. Nick Stahl and Rachel Nichols star as small-town sleuths who investigate a botched home invasion case that claims the life of a young child in an affluent community and enflames class divisions when the main suspects are from the poorer community nearby. Grace Gummer, Meryl Streep's second daughter to go into the family profession, makes her film debut.
"Anywhere USA" (2008)
Directed by Chusy Haney-Jardine
Released by Cinevolve Studios
Winner of a Spirit of Independence prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Chusy Haney-Jardine's collection of three comic vignettes involves a...

Chicago – There is a fine line that separates entertainingly bad movies from all-out bores. “The Room” is a truly original, wholly accidental work of comedic genius that greatly benefits from the impenetrable strangeness of its writer/director/star Tommy Wiseau. The film is so funny in so many different ways that it could easy hold up under countless viewings.
“Birdemic: Shock and Terror” is the first film to aim for “Room”-like success with audiences, passing itself off as another unintentionally side-splitting travesty. Yet the picture is nowhere near as hilarious as it thinks it is. Filmmaker James Nguyen is a charmless hack who blatantly steals the plots and characters from classic Hitchcock movies. His copying of “The Birds” is so shameless that it recalls the scandalous cut-and-paste job done by Camillo Teti, who populated his jaw-dropping “Titanic: The Animated Movie” with an assortment of thinly veiled Disney characters.

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Severin Films. If they aren’t releasing incredible catalog films like Hardware, The Sinful Dwarf and the upcoming Bloody Birthday on DVD, they are bringing the phenomenon that is Birdemic to a city near you (and soon to DVD and Blu-ray, too). To their bag of tricks you can add feature film production. We reported earlier on the anthology horror film The Theatre Bizarre being co-produced by the company, but coming to you first is Devolved, written and directed by Severin co-founder John Cregan.

I've spent a lot of time telling you all about the different aspects of Severin Films' home video catalog and even their theatrical releases. You would think that would be all, perhaps they'd found their niche and they'd be glad to hang out in their comfort zone, but you'd be wrong. Having admirably tackled EuroSleaze, horror, the eternal works of D'amato, Borowczyk, and Franco, and dipped their toes into feature film distribution and production, you'd think they would be satisfied. However, Severin Films has so much more to offer, their future is bright, and I predict that at least a couple of their upcoming releases will blow the minds of home viewers in the coming years.

When I first got into collecting movies part of my obsession was all of those great extra features that would give me a behind the scenes look into a film and its creation. It never really crossed my mind that someone had to put those together. Someone does. A lot of people do. In fact, it is a nice little cottage industry. There are several companies dedicated solely to creating extra features for DVD and Blu-ray releases. One of these companies started out as Blue Underground in the UK many years ago with Carl Daft and David Gregory. Daft and Gregory were middle school friends with a passion for films. While they were working on Jim Van Bebber's The Manson Family in Los Angeles, they hooked up with John Cregan and started working together as Severin Films in 2006. In 2009, Evan Husney came on the scene, allegedly as the result...

If you missed our interview last month with John Cregan of Severin Films, than you might not have yet heard the exciting news. Richard Stanley's classic sci-fi horror, Hardware, (one of my favorite sci-fi films of all time) is finally getting a long overdue DVD release form the boys over at Severin Films [1]. For the first time ever, the film will be presented uncut and in pristine widescreen with a plethora of special features that nobody saw coming. For years fans have been forced to sacrifice shelf space, aspect ratio, and a large dollop of studio-censored blood-fueled mayhem to their decade-old VHS copies of Hardware. Much like Richard Stanley's Dust Devil which had a whopping five disk DVD release, Hardware promises to be one of the best disk releases in 2009. If you haven't had a chance to see this post-apocalyptic cyberpunk celluloid shocker, than start by watching the promo video below,...

Inglorious Bastards Directed by Enzo Castellari When Tarantino opened the retrospective 'The Italian King of B's' at the 2004 Venice Biennale with Joe Dante, he publicly declared his love for Italian B-cinema of the 60s and 70s, helping to shine a spotlight on many forgotten gems of Italian genre/exploitation cinema including The Inglorious Bastards. Also known under the alternate titles of Hell's Heroes, The Deadly Mission, and G. I. Bro, Enzo G. Castellari's Bastards may have been a cash in on The Dirty Dozen, but its a successful one. A film with a concept so rich that one would understand it's influence on Tarantino, it's a fast paced knock-off reeking of untapped potential, just waiting for someone to remake it. While the film's obvious low budget prevented it from becoming a North American success, it still found a significant cult following (mostly in Europe) and is reputedly one of Quentin's favorite films.

Imperiled heroines struggling to survive, or malevolent forces of youthful evil, their pretty features contorted into visages of horror—such are the casting options most frequently available to young actresses in cinematic fright fare. Plague Town, which hits DVD this week from Dark Sky Films, offered both, as a family on vacation in a remote part of Ireland becomes stranded in a village where the local children have deformities on their faces and murder in their hearts.
Fango had the chance to speak to the performers on each side of this equation over the course of a long, eventually chilly night on Plague Town’s Connecticut location. Even as it has become a cliché of the new horror wave for filmmakers to say that their projects aim for the spirit of ’70s chillers, movies that genuinely evoke that veneer are few and far between. There’s a certain vibe about the decade’s drive-in fare that’s hard to define and harder to capture, no matter how much gritty photography, explicit gore and cannibal-dinner-table setpieces one incorporates. One new production that gets it, and gets it right, is Plague Town (coming May 12 on DVD from Dark Sky Films), the feature writing/directing debut of David Gregory—perhaps not surprising, since he has previously made his name as a producer of documentaries and DVD extras celebrating films of the era, most notably Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Shocking Truth.
It’s also thus not surprising that Plague Town adopts the Texas Chainsaw template of a squabbling fivesome who travel...

Now, I'm straight, but I have a huge man-crush on David Gregory.
And really, if you're a fan of subversive cinema, what's not to love?
For those of you that don't know, Gregory is the UK born horror hero behind such counterculture cult film DVD imprints as Blue Underground and Severin Films and many of the supplemental documentaries that pad out their unique releases. Dedicated, ambitious and massively prolific, this incredible force of frightful celluloid nature recently wrapped his debut feature length shocker, the shot in 16mm Plague Town and has just re-issued, among a slew of other bizarre titles, two of Jess Franco's weirdest and wildest (I'm a devout defender of Franco, more on that in further Blood Spattered Blog entries) – the slasher Bloody Moon and the certifiably insane Devil Hunter - on his cooler than thou Severin label.
