Jeymes Samuel can take the heat when it comes to commentary about his work. And he’s expecting plenty to follow the release of his latest film, The Book of Clarence, a biblical epic set for release on Jan. 12 about a man who, witnessing the rising popularity of Jesus the Messiah, attempts to cash in on that fame by performing fake miracles to get out of debt.
“People always see things the wrong way and they call it backlash,” says the director who also wrote and produced the film and its accompanying soundtrack, which arrives Friday along with the feature. “It’s conversation. I like the smoke. Let’s talk.”
Lakeith Stanfield stars in the lead role of Clarence, which reunites him with his The Harder They Fall co-star R J Cyler among a large ensemble cast that includes Omar Sy, Caleb McLaughlin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anna Diop and James McAvoy.

When I start my Zoom session with Adam Blackstone, he’s in the studio. He had spent all day there the previous day, working on a new version of Legacy, his debut album from last year, re-interpolating melodies from singers like Kirk Franklin, Jill Scott, and Jazmine Sullivan.
The album has already been a big moment for Blackstone. The Sullivan-featured “Round Midnight” from Legacy is nominated for a Best Traditional R&b Performance Grammy and made President Obama’s list of his top songs of 2022. Blackstone, a bassist from Willingboro,...

Erykah Badu, executive producer of the forthcoming documentary about late jazz and R&b trumpeter Roy Hargrove, wastes no time in elaborating on the influence her collaborator and high school classmate exerted on her life and career.
“It started with Roy,” says Badu, who first met Hargrove in 1985, when she was a freshman at Dallas’ Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. “Roy was the first person I met in high school: he in the music department and jazz band, me in dance right next door. We danced to that band’s versions of John Coltrane, Miles Davis. That helped me understand what jazz was, and how to interpret it. It was a subtle rebellion. Roy was already a legend as a sophomore — truth is,” she adds, “Roy was actually a legend starting in junior high.”

The R&b veteran Kem hasn’t released a new album since 2014: He took time away to get married, have two kids, change management, and chase a life of domesticity rarely conducive to the rigors of being a working musician. After returning from that sort of hiatus, most singers would try to keep risks to a minimum. But “Not Before You” arrives as a pleasant jolt on Kem’s latest album, Love Always Wins — a traditional ballad enlivened by unexpected, enticing choices.

Paul McCartney joined Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” on Monday, which was technically the first night of the 2019-20 TV season. The following evening, competitor Jimmy Fallon hosted the Wings frontman’s old Beatles bandmate, Ringo Starr, and somehow convinced him to play “Yellow Submarine” on classroom instruments.
House band The Roots was there, of course, to make sure the whole thing didn’t go under(water, get it? That’s a submarine pun.).

The Jonas Brothers started performing together as kids, so it only makes sense that part of their adult-age reunion included children’s toys.
On Monday’s “Tonight Show,” Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas and Kevin Jonas performed a classroom instruments collaboration with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots. The NBC host supplied the kazoos and the dressing room, Nick and Joe did most of the singing for hit-single “Sucker.”
The internet is a sucker for this stuff, so watch the video above.

Jimmy Fallon – Vocals, Casio Keyboard, Wood Block, Avocado Shaker
Questlove – Clappers
Kamal Gray – Xylophone
James Poyser – Melodica
Yeah, Fallon had a particularly busy night. Plus, his social media team wasn’t about to miss even one of their boss’ assignments.

You've never heard "Sucker" sung like this before. The Jonas Brothers teamed up with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots to perform a special rendition of their hit single for Monday's episode of The Tonight Show. But instead of rocking out on their guitars, the trio broke out a few classroom instruments. That's right! Nick Jonas used the clapper, Joe Jonas used the banana shaker and Kevin Jonas used the triangle. As for the late-night host, he played the keyboard, a wood block and an avocado shaker. Even The Roots members traded in their band instruments for these classroom alternatives. For instance, Questlove played the clapper, Kamal Gray played the xylophone and James Poyser played...

Look, there’s probably some scientific explanation for how Shin Lim is able to pull off this escalating series of card tricks from Friday’s episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” That doesn’t matter. He pulled cards out of his hair. Out of his hair.
Lim, the master illusionist, has made his way through a number of TV shows in recent years. He wowed the notoriously diligent and savvy hosts of “Penn and Teller Fool Us” (turning physical items into a column of smoke emanating from your mouth tends to do that to people) and was recently crowned champion of the All-Star season of the NBC reality competition show “America’s Got Talent.”
This time around, rather than vaporizing cards, he’s making them appear out of thin air. (It cannot be stressed enough how ridiculous it is that he just makes these “cards” “appear” in his own voluminous “hair.

El Dorado
Written by Leigh Brackett
Directed by Howard Hawks
USA, 1966
When El Dorado was first shown in 1966, the Western in its classical form was beginning to disappear from American cinema. When El Dorado was first shown in 1966, the Western in its classical form was beginning to disappear from American cinema. John Ford, synonymous with the genre, released his last feature that year, and El Dorado would be the second-to-last film by its own legendary director, Howard Hawks. Other than a revamped studio, a Spike Lee-directed opening sequence and a jazzy, funkified new theme song, the debut episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon bore a striking resemblance to its recently concluded Late Night incarnation. And why shouldn't it? So much of what made Late Night With Jimmy Fallon such a success was the 39-year-old host's sheer enjoyment of every facet of his job – and a happy Jimmy Fallon is a New York Jimmy Fallon. For the first time in 42 years, The Tonight Show has returned to its original home base,...

Warning: The following video will make you grin uncontrollably.
Late Night’s occasional “classroom instruments” videos — in which Jimmy Fallon, the Roots, and special guests perform popular songs accompanied only by woodblocks, toy xylophones, and the like — are generally pretty great. For pure joy value, though, none of the previous clips can compare to this one — which features Fallon and his band performing Sesame Street’s theme song with Big Bird, Elmo, Grover, and the rest of that show’s principal cast of muppets.

It wouldn't be a proper episode of "Thank You Notes" if Jimmy didn't try to crack up Roots-keyboardist James Poyser at the beginning, or if Jimmy and announcer Steve Higgins didn't try to one-up each other tagging out a joke. It's the little things that make these segments so fun.
This edition delivered both, in addition to some great gags about LL Cool J, TLC's "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" and No Smoking signs on planes.

Manchester, Tennessee — Questlove always has a few tricks up his sleeve, and the Roots drummer saved his one of his biggest stunts in recent history for Saturday night's "Superjam" session at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Just a couple hours after the Roots finished their own set on the festival's main stage, D'Angelo joined Questlove for his first U.S. performance in over a decade.
The Superjam session (billed as "?uestlove with very special guests") didn't kick off until well after midnight at "This Tent," and Quest wasn't on the stage for long before he proudly introduced the legendary R&B singer to the crowd, telling them, "I've been waiting 12 years to say this: Ladies and gentleman, D'Angelo!"

Marc takes Jennifer to task for her work ethic, even though she put her career on hold to support his. Is he being a hypocrite?
Jennifer Lopez does her best to say nothing negative abut ex Marc Anthony in her new Vanity Fair profile, but Marc does not manage to do the same! When asked about her work ethic Marc says, “She could enjoy life a little more. There are only a certain amount of hours in every day.” Ouch!
It is not all bad however, with Marc admitting that Jennifer has taught him all about discipline. He tells the mag, “now I get up at six in the morning, film Hawthorne, score the show, and I make my meetings.”
Marc also recounts when the pair first met in 1998 and Marc’s first line was, “You’re my wife and you don’t even two it.” Two marriages and two more tabloid relationships later,...

Erykah Badu has had a handful of nicknames throughout her 13-year career, such as "Mc Apples" and "Loretta Brown." But as a family woman, she should think about adopting one more: "Elastigirl."
"I got the Partridge Family. I got the hip-hop Incredibles," she laughed as she drove her kids home in Dallas.
Ms. Badu had just come from spending a little time grocery shopping, and she had all her kids piled into the ride. There's Seven, who is 12; his dad is Andre 3000. Then you have 5-year-old Puma, whose pop is a rap legend himself, the D.O.C. As a promotional project of his David Banner-featuring single "Cool", Anthony Hamilton releases a music video for the song. Shot in the outskirts of a city, the video shows Hamilton's happy life with his in-video wife even though they have no money in their pockets.
First appearing in the video making a morning coffee with no milk on it, Hamilton is seen sitting hand-in-hand with his in-video wife on the couch of their living room while watching their broken television with no picture displayed on it. Though problems come one after another, the couple is still able to smile and laugh.
"Cool" is one of the new songs appearing on Hamilton's upcoming album "The Point of It All", which hasn't had any fixed release date. In finishing the record, he has reportedly teamed up with producers Mark Batson, James Poyser and Kelvin Wooten. "They know what I've been doing...
