Johnnie To may be best known for his high-octane crime thrillers, but he has also achieved considerable critical and commercial success with his romantic comedies. From the Toronto International Film Festival, Adam Cook and Daniel Kasman continue our series of festival dialogues. Johnnie To's Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2 had its world premiere in Tiff's Special Presentations section.
Adam Cook: Here we are again, talking To. It's frustrating how many times I've encountered a dismissive attitude towards Johnnie To's romantic comedies. I realize even the director himself disassociates from them, but, and especially with his most recent works, the rom-coms have been as formally intricate and as impressively crafted as his more revered crime films. As everyone was praising Drug War, it was Romancing in Thin Air that stood out for me. Before that there was Don't Go Breaking My Heart (written on here by Ignatiy Vishnevetsky), an impossibly entertaining love triangle in the big city movie, that while over the top and silly, had some of To's most impressive images...

*The following review is included in the Saturday Shaw Brothers column for its familiarity with several iconic Shaw epics. In fact it is actually another spin on a famous tale which Shaw Bros did tackle more than once in their history.
Ronny Yu’s journey as a director of feature films is eerily reminiscent of that experienced by John Woo. After early success in their native land, Yu and Woo, albeit at different times in their careers, ventured into the Hollywood system with mixed results at best. Action movie legend John Woo returned to Hong Kong and made an extraordinarily grand scale period piece in the mainland, Red Cliff. After Bride of Chucky and Freddy vs Jason, Yu headed back home and made one of Jet Li’s greatest films, Fearless. Now, after a seven-year wait,...

Popular Taiwanese television action drama “Black and White” makes it to the big screen in suitably bombastic fashion with feature “Black & White Episode 1: The Dawn of Assault”, co-written and directed by series originator Tsai Yueh Hsun. Interestingly, the huge-budgeted film is actually a prequel to the show, losing one of the leads in Vic Chou and seeing Mark Chao’s wildcard cop teaming with top Mainland character actor Huang Bo (“Guns and Roses”) instead, joined by a star studded supporting cast that includes Angelababy (“First Time”), Alex To (“Hit Team”), Leon Dai (“Reign of Assassins”), Terri Kwan (“Prince of Tears”), and Dino and Julio Acconci from the Hong Kong band Soler. Set prior to his partnering with Vic Chou’s Pi Zi, the film opens with daredevil cop Ying Xiong (Mark Chao), running into trouble with his superiors after yet another bust turns into carnage.
