Exclusive: Five-time Emmy winner Jean Smart (Hacks) and actor-comedian Lil Rel Howery (Get Out) have teamed up for comedy short film Too Good.
Written and directed by Meron Alon, the film explores the afterlife with a humorous twist. In Too Good, a recently deceased man (Howery) arrives at the Gates of Heaven. There, he faces an unconventional interview with God herself (Smart), to determine if he’s good enough to get in.
Arjun Yadav produces under his Rsa Endeavors banner. Casting directors Barbie Block and Robin Lippin will executive-produce alongside Ben Escobar. The film is currently in post production and the producer’s aim is to develop the project into a feature or series after securing a festival berth.
“I was drawn to the script because I thought it was hilarious,” said Jean Smart. “The clever dialogue winks at all our quirky little private moments when we question, ‘Am I really a good person?...

It is three o’clock in the morning at a blackjack table inside Las Vegas’s sprawling Caesar’s Palace casino. A woman in town on business has just turned a $150 bankroll into $800, and she moves to retire to the nearby bar to buy her work family, whose fortunes at the same table have varied, a drink.
“I swear I barely know how to play,” she tells them. “But I do know the most important thing is to leave the table before your luck runs out.”
Jean Smart already has five gilded Emmy awards causing her shelves to groan under pressure. She deserves another for her “barely know how to play” nonsense. She has spent the evening feeding me advice on basic blackjack strategy — it’s my first time at the tables — yet I have only two chips left, totaling all of six dollars.

To celebrate the release of his new film, The Boy In The Woods, we had the pleasure of chatting to actor Richard Armitage about his powerful new film, and his hit show Red Eye, for which the finale aired this past weekend.
The Boy in the Woods is a Canadian drama film, directed by Rebecca Snow and released in 2023. Based on the memoir of the same name by Maxwell Smart, the film dramatizes Smart’s childhood experience of having to fend for himself in the forests of Poland during World War II.
Chatting to Armitage, we chat about the lure of the film and its unique power, working with writer/director Rebecca Snow – who had made the acclaimed documentary Cheating Hitler: Surviving the Holocaust in 2019 – his history lesson about the real-life people involved in the story, the acting challenges that accompany doing accents, and he waxes lyrical about his young...

Exclusive: It’s late January on the Las Vegas Strip, and a woman with a tall beehive hairdo and dressed head to toe in a sequined pink pantsuit steps in front of the fountain outside Caesars Palace clutching multiple bags of high-end designer shopping. This is Jean Smart, in the guise of her Hacks headliner Deborah Vance, preparing to shoot among the last of her scenes for the much-delayed third season of the Max and Universal Television comedy series.
It has taken a long time to get here, “and part of that was my fault,” Smart tells Deadline self-deprecatingly, referring to the season’s first significant pause in production, on February 14 2023, when Smart went in for what she later described as a successful heart procedure. She announced the news on Instagram, a little under two years after her beloved husband, actor Richard Gilliland, had passed away suddenly following heart complications.

Ayo Edebiri‘s upgrade to lead for Season 2 of “The Bear” has been an unqualified success. She won the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy Actress in January, along with the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ single comedy actress prize. In the midst of all that, she took home the Best Comedy Supporting Actress statuette for Season 1 at the delayed Emmy ceremony. And now Edebiri is the odds-on favorite to win the Best Comedy Actress Emmy for Season 2 in September, which would put her on a short list of women who’ve won both comedy lead and supporting trophies.
Since the categories were standardized in 1966, five ladies have completed the sweep. The Human Rights Campaign honored Jean Smart and Sterling K. Brown at its 2024 Los Angeles Dinner, held on Saturday night at the Fairmont Century Plaza and featuring a keynote speech by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.
The night — which toasted those working for LGBTQ+ equality — kicked off with Biden’s speech following a short introduction from both First Daughter Ashley Biden and Hrc president Kelly Robinson. Early into the her address, the first lady was interrupted by protesters shouting, “Ceasefire now.” One person who was escorted out by security held up a sign that read, “Queer Jews Say Ceasefire Now.” Biden momentarily paused her speech, but didn’t directly address the protesters.
Biden spoke about her relationship with the president before jumping into issues the LGBTQ+ are currently facing. “This community is under attack,” Biden told the crowd. “Rights are being stripped away. Freedoms are eroding. More and more state laws are being passed,...

Though the Human Rights Campaign gala on Saturday night in Los Angeles contended with a brief interruption by protestors calling for a Gaza ceasefire, the annual stayed largely on course, serving as a rallying cry for Democratic candidates and the LGBTQ+ community.
In addition to the keynote speech from First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Jean Smart and Sterling K. Brown were honored with the National Equality Award and the Ally for Equality Award, respectively.
Smart has long been associated with series that have had a strong resonance with queer people, including “Hacks,” “Watchmen” and the 1980s sitcom “Designing Women,” which featured one of the first storylines addressing AIDS on network television.
“I was asked … how I felt about being a gay icon. And I thought, ‘Well, if I’m in the company of Judy and Liza and Bette and Joan and Bette and Cher, then I’m [honored],” Smart said. “Really,...

Will “The Bear” rule the Emmys even harder the second time around? What will succeed “Succession”? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their first Emmy predictions of the season.
It feels like the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were just yesterday — and that’s because they basically were. The delayed ceremony took place in January and “The Bear” dominated with six awards, including Best Comedy Series, for a total of 10 wins for its debut season. And for Season 2, it will have a shot at pulling a “Schitt’s Creek” by claiming all seven comedy categories at the main ceremony as reigning supporting actress champ Ayo Edebiri has moved to lead. But can she hold off the last two Best Comedy Actress champs, Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Jean Smart (“Hacks”)? Smart is undefeated for the Max series, which returns with its third season on May...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, in our Season 4 premiere, we survey the comedy field.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s time for the premiere edition of Emmy Experts Typing. For Season 4 of our weekly conversation series, the stakes have never been higher and the guest stars are bigger than ever? Ok, not really — at least in the drama categories, hey-o! But we’ll spend the next several months cycling through the top races in comedy, drama and limited series, starting today with the shows that prove music laughter is the best medicine. Or, well, maybe not since “The Bear” is the runaway favorite already here and very well could repeat its 2023 (2024) Emmy wins in 2024 (2024). For what it’s worth, I’ve said yes, chef to “The Bear” in Best Comedy,...

SXSW can’t get enough of Jean Smart.
The crowd at Austin’s Paramount theater erupted as Smart walked down the aisle to find her seat at the Saturday morning world premiere of “Hacks” Season 3, in which she plays aging comedian Deborah Vance. The Max comedy series has been off the air for two years, during which Smart suffered a health scare and underwent a heart procedure that delayed production.
“We love you, Jean!” an attendee screamed as the applause began to die down. “Love you back!” she called out.
The theater went wild again when Smart first appeared on screen during the premiere, and again —this time with a standing ovation — when she took the stage alongside co-star Hannah Einbinder and series creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky for a post-screening Q&a.

“It’s a little early for comedy,” “Hacks” co-creator Jen Statsky told the audience at South by Southwest on Saturday, March 9. In her defense, it was noon, but to counter — it’s never too early for “Hacks.”
The Emmy-winning HBO comedy created by Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Those fans packed Austin’s Paramount theater on Saturday to cheer and cackle and give a standing ovation to star Jean Smart — one of the only SXSW premieres dealing not solely in hype and hope, but with a dedicated audience who know and love the series.

Jamie Dornan, known for his infamous role as Christian Grey in 50 Shades of Grey, was hospitalized with “heart attack symptoms,” after a toxic run-in with poisonous caterpillars during a trip to Portugal.
Dornan’s friend, Gordon Smart, who was also on the trip, was hospitalized for the same symptoms.
At first, the friends thought their symptoms were classic signs of one too many the night before.
After their conditions grew worse, they rushed themselves to the hospital. Doctors told them that their symptoms were caused by processionary caterpillars. These types of caterpillars have long hairs surrounding their body that cling to human skin very easily and spread their toxic proteins.
Dornan’s specific symptoms included “tingling in his left hand and tickling in his left arm” and made him believe it was “the sign of the start of a heart attack,” Smart told the podcast The Good, The Bad,...

Julianne Nicholson isn’t holding her breath for a “Mare of Easttown” Season 2, but still would “100 percent” return to the HBO series if given the chance.
Nicholson, who won an Emmy along with co-stars Kate Winslet and Evan Peters, told People the long-awaited second season is “not impossible” but also not currently in the works. “Mare of Easttown” starred Winslet as a Pennsylvania detective investigating a series of missing girls. The show was created by Brad Ingelsby.
“It’s not impossible,” Nicholson said of a second season. “You never know.”
She added that she would “100 percent” reprise her role, “if there [was a Season 2] and Kate still was Mare and Jean [Smart] was her mom and Brad wrote it.”
However, Nicholson added, “I’m definitely not waiting for it. I’m not losing sleep over it. But if that was happening and I was invited to join, yeah, definitely.”

This article contains The Wheel of Time spoilers.
Readers of The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan may already know that the author was heavily influenced by the Dune books of Frank Herbert, but even for those who only know these sci-fi/fantasy classics from their screen adaptations, one parallel became very clear in the latest episode: the character of Aviendha played impressively by Ayoola Smart (Killing Eve). The Aiel prisoner immediately evoked all the desert warrior vibes of a Fremen, making her one of the most compelling new characters of the season.
The Aiel people hail from an arid land to the east of a barrier mountain range, separating them from the kingdoms of the west, just as an ocean separates the Seanchan from the known world of The Wheel of Time. The show has made clear that Aiel are mistrusted in this land because of a great...

With her 2022 Emmy victory for “Hacks,” Jean Smart became the seventh woman to take the Best Comedy Actress prize for both of her show’s first two seasons and, at age 70, broke her own record as the category’s oldest winner. Her history-making performance in her submitted episode, “The Click,” amounted to 21 minutes, translating to a sizable 62.31% of the roughly half-hour installment. If she were nominated for the exact same performance this year, however, she would land toward the bottom of the lineup’s screen time ranking.
Since “Hacks” has yet to return for a third season, Smart is incapable of retaining her title for a second time. The five current nominees (two of whom were bested by Smart last year) boast a screen time average of 27 minutes and 50 seconds, or 55.89% of their chosen episodes. This data was formulated using a simple definition of stand-alone screen time, which is basically...

The role of the showstopper simply couldn’t have gone to someone more worthy. The unlikeliest femme fatale, the doe-eyed Nida, couldn’t be further from the stereotypical glamor-dripping portrayal of a good-girl-gone-bad that usually caters to the male gaze. Here’s a girl who’d send chills down your spine with just how deep her violent impulses run. Season 6 of Black Mirror draws the curtains with a bittersweet tale of human corruption–if you can even call it that, considering the contexts of the corrupt and her victims.
Spoilers Ahead

Can you really blame Nida for subduing her justified rage with fantasies of putting her insufferable, racist coworkers’ faces through the glass display shelf? Because I don’t. That’s the least that has a shot at comforting her when Vicky scrunches her bland nose at Nida’s lunch and her boss, being quite the racist degenerate himself,...

After four years, “Black Mirror” is back for Season 6 and considering it’s the premiere destination for storytelling that comes swinging at big tech, it was only a matter of time before it took aim at the streaming industry. Season 6 comes out of the gate hitting directly at Netflix — the streamer in which it airs — with the arrival of the Streamberry app in the hyper-meta episode “Joan Is Awful.” And hoo boy, does Streamberry shake up the current understanding of the “Black Mirror” universe.
Not least of all because the Streamberry homepage is jam-packed with familiar titles that reference episodes from every season of “Black Mirror.” Some of the shots go by in a hurry, and not everyone has time to pause (over and over again) to obsess over the details, so we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to all the Easter Eggs, callbacks and references you’ll find in the Streamberry lineup.

Programs from Elliot Page’s production company and the team behind comedy Letterkenny are among Paramount+’s latest Canadian slate.
The streamer’s strategy in Canada was unveiled today at the Banff World Media Festival, with a line-up of four projects in development and an original documentary from documentary filmmaker Dianne Whelan.
Actor and producer Page’s Page Boy Productions and Canadian producer heavyweight Muse Entertainment are working up Len & Cub, a limited six-part series dramatizing the secret relationship of two young men in rural 20th-century New Brunswick whose story came to light when a box of photos was recently discovered in an estate sale. Lynne Kamm is writing.
Hate the Player: The Ben Johnson Story is a scripted comedy from New Metric Media, the company behind Letterkenny, about the scandal of the titular Johnson, the former Canadian sprinter who went from “hero to zero in 9.79 seconds.

Christina Applegate was the guest of honor at Variety TV Fest in Los Angeles on June 7. The actor accepted the TV legacy award at the event, which marked one of her few public appearances since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (Ms) in 2021. Jean Smart, who portrayed Applegate's onscreen mother in the ABC sitcom "Samantha Who?," presented her with the accolade in front of a crowd that also included stars like Niecy Nash, Elle Fanning, and Kerry Washington. Applegate then delivered an emotional speech addressing the future of her four-decade Hollywood career.
"I miss it so much. I just don't know."
After briefly reflecting on acting alongside Smart, Applegate acknowledged how Ms will affect her ability to get in front of the camera again. Holding back tears, she said, "I hate it so much, but thank you so much for being supportive and understanding as I journey through this new part...

Christina Applegate was very intentional about who stood at the podium last November when she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Watching from the crowd with her husband and daughter at her side, Applegate heard remarks from her other family — “Married… With Children” co-stars Katey Sagal and David Faustino, and her “Dead to Me” support system, co-star Linda Cardellini and creator/writer Liz Feldman.
For Applegate, the foursome represents the full breadth of her 40-year career in Hollywood.
“There was no mistake as to who I asked to speak, kind of my beginning and my…,” she hesitates for the moment, editing her thoughts in real time, before she continues, “…my possible end. That was really important to me. It was about where I came from and where I landed.”
She chooses those words carefully — “possible end.” It’s an acknowledgment that her 2021 multiple sclerosis diagnosis has left...

Although Edie Falco’s Emmy Awards history began with a successful Best Drama Actress bid for “The Sopranos” in 1999, she has since racked up more comedy nominations than drama ones. After receiving a comedy guest notice for “30 Rock” in 2008, she earned half a dozen lead ones for “Nurse Jackie” between 2010 and 2015, the first of which led to a win. Now, as a Best Comedy Supporting Actress contender for Peacock’s “Bupkis,” she could become the eighth entrant on the list of women who have earned recognition in every possible comedy Emmy category.
After “Nurse Jackie,” “Bupkis” is only the second comedy series on which Falco has played a regular role. Her character, Amy Davidson, is a fictionalized version of series star Pete Davidson’s own mother, who raised him and his younger sister as a single parent after her husband died during the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.

In making a documentary about a beloved actor like Robert Englund—most famous for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise— a major dilemma for the filmmakers has to be how to balance presenting the information people want with making a good movie.
