Lawrence Steven Meyers, the veteran sales agent and producer who set up Meyers Media Group, has died in London. He was 67.
Meyers was a recognizable figure in the film world on both sides of the pond.
He was born in Mount Vernon, New York in 1956 and spent his early years growing up in Spring Valley before going to the University of Florida, where he majored in Communications and Public Relations.
He joined Jad Films, an international sales company founded by his uncle, Bobby Meyers, and within a few years he was recruited by mini-major New World Pictures to head up the international sales division, becoming the youngest person to hold the post.
Exec roles at Trilogy, Morgan Creek Entertainment and Media 8 followed, along with a 10-year stint at Lorimar Motion Pictures.

Giles Borg talks to Nerdly writer and host of the Britflicks podcast, Stuart Wright, about his route to becoming a film director and lessons learnt making his first two features: 1234 (2008) and Flutter (2011).
His third feature, Albion is gearing up to shoot later this year.
Postscript: Giles says: “Oh, and now I’ve had time to think you can say that I think the British film a lot of people won’t have seen that they should have (which stumped me in the podcast) is Winstanley. How I didn’t think of that at the time amazes me, I love that film.”...

Coming form a weary gambler, trust me when I say Giles Borg’s Flutter misses far too many beats. You won’t feel the gut-wrenching loneliness of a debilitating bad beat, nor the euphoric high of cashing in on a big win. True gamblers are in it for the sheer thrill of lady luck’s unreadable fate, yet Stephen Leslie’s screenplay remains relatively tame in the face of high stakes and higher rewards. This is a thriller based on compulsive betting, yet it feels about as dangerous as a game of truth or dare, even with human souls on the line. Blame that on strangely sluggish pacing, unequal wagers, and silly terms of acceptance, but no matter what angle you take on this suspenseless thriller, you’re bound to turn up a loser.

The Empire in Leicester Square played host (alongside four other cinemas around the country) to the third annual British Independent Film Festival last weekend, and we were there to catch the world premiere of British high-octane horror Airborne on the Friday evening, as well as a trio of films screened the following day.
As the title suggests, the festival celebrates independent filmmaking and the choice of features this year represented an encouraging mix of genres (the full list of films can be found on the festival’s website.)
Airborne
Boasting a number of familiar faces from popular genre films of the past (including ‘Last Crusade’ villain Julian Glover and a certain farm boy-turned Jedi Knight) Airborne follows a group of misfit passengers on a night flight to New York who get more than they bargained for during their stormy journey.
A number of stars from the film were in attendance on the Friday,...

John is a professional gambler but when he meets a beautiful and mysterious new bookie his life starts to spiral out of control.
We might not be able to afford the cinema tickets so much these days, but the banking crisis is at least proving a rich seam for some of the films showing. While fomenting documentaries such as Inside Job shoulder along with the solid Hollywood of Wall Street 2, there’s also space at the table for a little Flutter.

Step one – learn three chords. Step two – form a band. Er, what was step one again? Yes, the toilet gig circuit, dimly-lit rehearsal rooms and arguments about who wasn't playing in time (usually everyone); this is the stuff of 1234, the debut feature from British writer-director Giles Borg, not to mention our new free movie for today. Today being Thursday, in case you're confused. You rockers, you.

Likable Britpoppy tale from a debut director
There's an awful lot of likability and charm in this debut feature from British film-maker Giles Borg: a downbeat, neo-Britpoppy tale from north London about a nerdy guitarist called Stevie (Ian Bonar) yearning for a record deal, but also deeply and hopelessly in love with the bassist Emily (Lyndsey Marshal), who doesn't really want to be in the band at all. It's a bit uncertain here and there, but the scene where Stevie and Emily have a fleeting, uncomfortable kiss is heartbreakingly tremendous. The feature, shot by Ken Eley, looks great too.
Rating: 3/5

London -- Oliver Stone's "W." and Rian Johnson's "The Brothers Bloom" will both premiere in gala slots during next month's 52nd edition of the BFI London Film Festival, organizers said Wednesday.
Just a short clip of Stone's much anticipated "fair, true portrait" of outgoing President George W. Bush had a packed theater auditorium for the press launch braying for more.
Other gala highlights include Marc Forster's outing as a Bond director with "Quantum Of Solace" and Stephan Elliot's period romp "Easy Virtue," based on Noel Coward's 1920s social comedy.
Artistic director Sandra Hebron said that despite all the negative press and downbeat reaction coming out of the recently wrapped Venice Film Festival, cinema was in rude health and her event had plenty of quality to choose from for its lineup.
