He came out as gay (to his family) during his time playing for the San Diego Padres (1993 - 1995). He came out publicly to Lydia Martin of the Miami Herald in 1999 (after moving to the Miami area in 1996 to be with his boyfriend, Efrain Veiga, and working in the restaurant business with Veiga), becoming the second (former) Major League Baseball player to publicly come out as gay.
