Just when I thought I'd never buy another Funko Pop, those maestros of vinyl collectibles went ahead and designed a series that just shot to the top of my asking list for Santa Claus.
It was only a matter of time before the characters of "Yellowjackets" were given the Pop treatment, but Funko didn't just put them all in their soccer uniforms and switch their heads, they delivered unique designs that highlight the creativity, resourcefulness, and '90s fashion goodness of our fave soccer players (and Coach Ben) from the "Doomcoming" episode. Based on some of the items the characters are holding, it also appears that these designs are from after they all started tripping balls on Misty's magic mushroom stew. They were even kind enough to include Jackie in what will potentially be her only Funko form -- unless...

In “Caligula: The Ultimate Cut,” absolute power corrupts absolutely, but even using absolutely all of the footage shot for the notorious production back in 1976 does not necessarily result in a better film. The most expensive independent film ever produced until that time, “Caligula” was conceived by late Penthouse founder Bob Guccione as a sexually explicit film that also featured real actors and high production values; hiring bestselling author Gore Vidal to write a script for Italian avant-garde director Tinto Brass (“Salon Kitty”), Guccione subsequently attracted such respected thespians as Malcolm McDowell, Peter O’Toole, John Gielgud and Helen Mirren to star. But after disputes between Brass and Vidal prompted the author to sue to remove his name from the film, Guccione commandeered final cut and inserted shots of graphic sex and violence, prompting cast and crew alike to disavow the film.

(Above, Karyn Kusama with Courtney Eaton and Samantha Hanratty of “Yellowjackets” at Variety’s TV Fest in June.)
Somehow, Season 2 of Showtime’s hit drama “Yellowjackets” managed to keep its sense of humor, even as the series’ story got darker and, yes, it finally went full cannibal. It’s all about balancing the tone, which is something executive producer Karyn Kusama helped set last season as director of the show’s pilot.
Kusama tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast that the “Yellowjackets” balance of shock and guffaw comes out of the visions of executive producers/showrunners Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson and Jonathan Lisco. “They’ve always understood a tone that I really love myself, which is a kind of adrenalized intense experience that sometimes makes you feel like you need to laugh because you’re so nervous.”

The winter storm has somewhat abated on “Yellowjackets” and opened up many things in Episode 7, “Burial,” but nothing compares to what Misty discovers within the depths of an immersion tank: John Cameron Mitchell.
Mitchell graces the Showtime series for a brief musical interlude based, according to director Anya Adams, on the wildest, Fosse-est swings in “Cabaret” and “Chicago.” Even though the sequence lasts just three-and-a-half minutes, it was extensively prepped, rehearsed, and shot so that the “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” star would be just as magnetic as Joel Grey’s Mc — even dressed as a parrot.
Because, of course, Mitchell appears in this mental musical interlude embodying Caligula, Misty’s bird friend named for one of the more maligned Roman Emperors (an impressive feat given the murder baseline for Roman Emperors). How does one prepare to play a parrot figment of one of the more unhinged “Yellowjackets” characters? By...

In this week’s “Yellowjackets” episode, which hit Showtime streaming on Friday, Tony-winning singer and actor John Cameron Mitchell makes a surprise cameo as part of Misty (Christina Ricci)’s out-of-body experience in a sensory deprivation tank. [Spoilers for episode 2.07, “Burial” follow]
“I’m the go-to one-off singer/guest star for shows now,” Mitchell quipped in a Zoom interview with TheWrap. Mitchell, who rose to fame for writing and starring in the stage musical and subsequent film “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” has appeared recently in “The Sandman” and costars in Apple TV+’s “City on Fire,” which premieres Sunday.
In previous “Yellowjackets”episodes, we learned that Misty and her fellow Citizen Detective Walter (Elijah Wood) both love showtunes, so a Broadway-style fantasy sequence isn’t entirely out of left field. It unfolds in a theatrically heightened mode with Mitchell against an empty black stage with a few props while wearing a fabulous...

Episode seven of “Yellowjackets” Season 2, “Burial,” offers a temporary calm after episode six’s tempestuous storm. As the season faces its final few episodes, “Burial” dials back the turbulent intensity just enough to develop individual character arcs further as the Yellowjackets finally reunite. Episode seven explores the fallout of “Qui,” forcing its characters to confront truths, grapple with their inner turmoil and traumas, and steel themselves for another raging storm.
With all the surviving (that we know of) Yellowjackets gathered at Lottie’s (Simone Kessell) wellness center, each finds themselves tasked with forms of therapy of their choosing. Unlike her teen counterpart, Nat (Juliette Lewis) has become a believer under Lottie’s care over the season. Unlike her teen counterpart, Van (Lauren Ambrose) wants to steer clear of Lottie’s tactics and sway. Misty (Samantha Hanratty) finds herself examining her feelings about Walter (Elijah Wood), while self-care becomes a Herculean...

This post contains spoilers for the seventh episode of "Yellowjackets" season 2.
After last week's "Yellowjackets" tore our hearts out and stomped on them, the latest episode provides a bit of respite for our world-weary survivors — at least in the present day. While '90s Shauna (Sophie Nelisse) was busy giving Lottie (Courtney Eaton) a pummelling, the older versions of all our favorite characters were trying to find some clarity on Lottie's (Simone Kessell) compound. For Shauna (Melanie Lynskey), that meant caring for a goat, while Taissa (Tawny Cypress) painted a wall and Van (Lauren Ambrose) went on a bender.
No one had quite as much fun as Misty (Christina Ricci), though; after spending most of the episode avoiding the sensory deprivation tank she was assigned to lay in, she finally faced the darkness, and the darkness turned out to have a lot of the old razzle-dazzle. In the show's most delightfully surreal sequence to date,...

This article contains spoilers for "Yellowjackets" season 2 episode 3.
If Misty is as intelligent and clever as Sherlock Holmes, she needs her own Moriarity. This is how the new character Walter presents himself in "Digestif," the third episode of "Yellowjackets" season 2 — although we still have much to learn about him. Elijah Wood made a stealthy appearance as Walter in the first episode, narrating a post as PuttingTheSickInForensics on the online citizen detective community that Misty frequents. PuttingTheSickInForensics shatters Misty's confidence that the murder cover-up of Adam Martin went smoothly when he asks citizen detective users to consider Adam's "mystery lady friend."
During Misty's pursuit of Natalie, Walter promises to help her with the motel's old security camera if she stops downvoting his comments about Adam's disappearance. "Yellowjackets" makes it clear in the second episode that Walter has just as great investigative skills as Misty. He tracks Misty down at the nursing...
