Cypress Hill has always been an easy group to pigeonhole. From the adenoidal whine of frontman B-Real’s voice to the group’s almost monomaniacal focus on weed-smoking, one can imagine younger listeners writing them off as a one-note act. But history has been kind to them, and a deeper look through the smoke clouds on the surface reveals much more than meets the eye.
They were hip-hop’s first Latino superstars, and key architects of its West Coast sound and style. They were among the most visible advocates for cannabis legalization at a time when that prospect seemed politically unrealistic. And they were second only to the Beastie Boys in their ability to bridge the divide between rap and rock audiences, at a time when those two genres were often at odds. Estevan Oriol’s entertaining, energetic, better-than-it-had-to-be documentary “Cypress Hill: Insane in the Brain” offers a more complete...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Batman (Matt Reeves)
Over the 80 years of his comic book, televised, and cinematic existence, Batman has always grappled with his secretive dual identity. Bruce Wayne hobnobs and toasts champagne with fellow philanthropic one-percenters during the day, while his Caped Crusader alter-ego attempts to clean up Gotham City and its never-ending crime problem at night, a particularly torturous method of dealing with childhood trauma. But in The Batman, director Matt Reeves’ moody and riveting addition to the canon, that binary is mostly absent. The cape and cowl isn’t so much a nocturnal costume as it is around-the-clock attire. – Jake K. (full review)

The weed-filled, lowrider-laced story of Cypress Hill is coming to the small screen. On Thursday, Showtime released the official trailer for Cypress Hill: Insane in the Brain about the rap group’s influence on hip-hop.
The film is directed by Estevan Oriol and explores the group’s one-of-a-kind sound and how they were able to effortlessly feature their Latino roots and west coast upbringing in their music. “Somewhere in here, there is Cypress Hill,” the trailer starts as B-Real looks through film with a microscope. “We never thought we’d be making history.

Nearly 30 years later, Cypress Hill is still proud to have been shut out of “Saturday Night Live.”
The California hip-hop group was infamously said to have been banned from the late night show after its 1993 performance when DJ Muggs smoked a marijuana joint on stage. An “SNL” insider told TheWrap they don’t believe there is actually a ban on any act, including Cypress Hill.
During a TCA panel for the upcoming documentary “Cypress Hill: Insane in the Brain” on Tuesday, rapper Sen Dog called the idea of being unable to get back on the “SNL” stage “punk rock.”
“I kind of like the fact that we’re banned,” Sen Dog said. “The whole thing about being banned, it’s punk rock in itself. I would like to leave it like that. If the guys wanted to do it, then that’d be something we could talk about or whatever,...

Hip-hop has grown from a party in a South Bronx basement to a global soundtrack over its 47-year run. And as it approaches the 50-year mark, some of the genre’s originators have made it their mission to ensure that the milestone is celebrated in a way befitting of its influence.
Among those taking the reins in telling the story of hip-hop is rapper and Mass Appeal partner Nasir “Nas” Jones (pictured) along with Mass Appeal chief creative officer Sacha Jenkins, writer, director, and producer of the Emmy- and Peabody-nominated Showtime series “Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men.” Returning to the cable network, “Hip Hop 50” highlights the genre’s dense history through the lens of different participants and delves into the sub-cultures birthed from its rise.

Self-portraits are respected, if not encouraged in virtually all artforms. Except cinema. There, when a director turns camera on themselves, it can seem indulgent, if not downright gratuitous. It’s a tricky line to walk, sharing without showing off, revealing insights no one else could while maintaining enough distance for audiences to relate. When it goes right, audiences get something seismic, ground-breaking like “Exit Through the Gift Shop,” the Banksy bombshell dismantling of his own mystique. “La Originals” is the opposite, a feature-length sizzle reel in service of its makers’ still semi-underground reputation.

It’s 1992, and two lowriders walk into a Penthouse Players record release party at the Hollywood Athletic Club. In August, Maker Studios announced a deal with photographer Estevan Oriol and Sanctioned TV, his channel about La life. With its newest partnership, Maker is continuing its commitment to urban-themed programming. The multi-channel network has reached a deal with Mass Appeal, the Brooklyn-based magazine and channel run in part by rapper Nas. Mass Appeal started as a graffiti mag (with Oriol among the roster of regular columnists) before a $1.4 million investment from Nas and others resurrected it as a more general urban publication earlier this year. In its current form, Mass Appeal's YouTube channel features plenty of guest appearances and interviews, especially with figures from the rap community. Through Maker's partnership with Mass Appeal, the McN will use it as a platform for specific branded series and original creations while also connecting it to appropriate pre-roll advertisers and increasing its YouTube presence. “They see us as filling a void in their music space,...

Lost amid the hubbub caused by Maker Studios' impending acquisition of Blip is the network's continued efforts to debut new collaborative channels. Maker's latest partnership pairs it with noted photographer Estevan Oriol, who will explore Los Angeles' singular lifestyle on a new channel. Oriol's channel is called SanctionedTV, and at launch it features three web series. The most prominent of these is Tattoo Stories, which enters the parlor of Oriol's longtime business partner, Mister Cartoon. Tattoo Stories is far from the first web series to explore the world of body ink, but it is making an impact thanks to its high profile guests. The most recent episode features Snoop Dogg, a fellow Maker Studios creator. The other two launch programs are La Women, where Oriol brings viewers along on his photo shoots, and Skid Row Stories, which examines La's most downtrodden individuals. "Our partnership with Sa Studios will provide a new,...

The one perk to Gangster Squad getting pushed back 4 months is that there has been plenty of time for more promotional pieces for the film. The latest is a new series of beautiful black and white pictures featuring various members of the cast.
Warner Brothers hired photographer Estevan Oriol and got some of the film’s stars together for a pretty slick shoot. Although all the stars aren’t featured, the ones that are look pretty awesome.
With how good these pictures look, it almost makes one wonder whether director Ruben Fleischer should have opted to shoot the entire film in black and white. It certainly would’ve been interesting to see this period piece shot how it would’ve been at the time. That being said, the trailers and previous pictures from the film showcase some absolutely stunning colors on both costumes and the locations, so a color shoot...

Last week, a window into the future opened up in downtown Manhattan's trendy SoHo district. Peering inside of the Wooster Street Social Club's storefront window, passers-by could see digital grafitti screens along with getting a look at the robot arm they'll be wearing in the future. Well, the future of "Deus Ex: Human Revolution," anyway.
The upcoming cyberpunk action RPG takes place in a future where cyborg augmentation is turning human bodies into much more than nature intended. Publisher Square Enix mounted an art show where artists illustrated pieces that spoke to the pro- and anti-augmentation sides of the debate. Giant pixellated blow-ups of lead character Adam Jensen stared out from the walls of the Social Club, providing a backdrop to painted and photographed work from artists like Estevan Oriol, Sam Flores, N8 Van Dyke and two-man collective 3rassiere.

Due out in two months, "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" takes place in a future where biomechanical enhancements divide people into pro- and anti-bionic factions. The game's lead character--private security agent Adam Jensen--becomes a cyborg against his will when anti-enhancement activists attack Sarif Industries, the cybernetic research company he works for. Jensen ventures into the world of 2047 armed with new abilities to help him unravel the conspiracy that's turning ordinary and enhanced humans against each other. Players will navigate moral gray areas and engage in all-out combat, spending a lot of time in both the halls of power and on the gritty streets of cities like Shanghai and Detroit.
Previews have shown off the art style of "Dx:hr" and you'll notice a lot of cravats, scarves and puffy sleeves on the characters in the world, as well as an old-world architectural sensibility folded into the overbuilt, future sprawl of the environments.

Title: Mallrats
Artist: Laz Marquez
Mallrats was the subject of much critical derision when it was released, with many critics comparing it unfavorably to Smith’s first film, Clerks. In his negative review of the film, critic Roger Ebert said “Before Mallrats was released, I chaired a panel that Smith participated in and Kevin Smith cheerfully said he’d be happy to do whatever the studios wanted, if they’d pay for his films. At the time, I thought he was joking.” Kevin Smith responded by apologizing for Mallrats at the 1996 Independent Spirit Awards, though he later stated that the apology was made in jest. Nevertheless, the film developed a strong cult following after it was released on video and here we are years later, with artists influenced to design their own unique posters for the film.
An excellent woodcut-style poster has been put online for Meek’s Cutoff, and it’s pretty inspired stuff.

The presentation was also a benefit as proceeds from the artwork sold and the program will be donated to The American Red Cross to help the victims of the Haiti Earthquake.
The challenge to the artists was to create poster art based off their interpretation of the Oscar Nominated film, Inglourious Basterds artwork. Each print was numbered and signed by Quentin Tarantino and only six of each were made and sold for $300 each. The giclee prints were only available for purchase at Upper Playground, Los Angeles.
For more information on the artists here are individual links to their respective official sites.

A new art gallery is being opened in downtown Los Angeles as a fundraiser for The American Red Cross to help the victims of the Haiti Earthquake. We received an email today with a link to Upper Playground where they have over 14 shots of some the different artwork that's being sold and it's seriously Awesome stuff. I thought it couldn't get any better than that unused James Goodridge poster from last year, but these are the absolute cream of the crop. I've picked a few of my favorites which you can see below - head to Upper Playground to see a few more. The gallery's creative team has assembled the following select group of accomplished artists: David Choe, Sam Flores, Estevan Oriol, Grotesk, Jeremy Fish,...

Ugh, it's been way too long since we've had any good True Blood info, so I'm taking this as a win even though it barely qualifies: Snoop Dogg wants to be on True Blood. Yes! On his new single "Gangsta Luv," Snoop raps that "Everyday is the same thang, I creep in/ It's like True Blood, I sink my teeth in," and apparently the name check wasn't for nothing: Snoop told MTV he's a Bon Temps nut. "I love that show. I wish I could be on it. I'd be a hell of a vampire, don't you think? So what's happenin'?...

I remember being involved in a music video in the 1980s. At the time I was programming director at New York's The Kitchen and we would rent out the space to video shoots to help pay the rent. The space got rented out to a big video with a budget in the mid-six-figures. They took both floors, built for a few days, shot for a few days, and envelopes of petty cash were handed out like candy. A few years later my partner and I produced a couple of music videos and wondered how we'd pull it off on only $100,000. Now, music video budgets have shrunken even further just as have the budgets of indie films. Here's Estevan Oriol, who has directed pieces for D12, Cypress Hill, and Blink 182, among others, decrying the deflationary effects of music...

Cheo Hodari Coker has been given the keys to write "Lowriders," a drama set in the world of low-riding cars for Universal and Imagine. Imagine's Brian Grazer is producing.
The project is based on an idea by Grazer, who is known for exploring concepts, personalities and settings, even devoting a specialist to handle these intellectual and artistic endeavors. He was intrigued by the low-riding culture, which sees mainly teens driving cars that can adjust or have adjusted their suspension system. The culture finds its home in California and the Southwest, primarily among the Latino and black cultures.
Imagine and Universal execs went on a manhunt for a scribe who could not only write authentically about the scene but also craft a solid story. Coker, who is coming off of the Notorious B.I.G. biopic "Notorious," fit the bill.
He will now tackle the project in an office at Imagine's Beverly Hills headquarters.
