Back in the beginning, Davido used to dream of just wanting “to hear my song on the radio once or twice” — getting to the Grammys was barely a glimmer. But last night the Nigerian American superstar let Rolling Stone tag along as he rolled up to music’s biggest night for the first time, and with three nominations to his name.

The explosion of Afrobeats has been one of the biggest stories in the music industry over the past five years, with acts like Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, and Tems becoming global superstars. As Africa’s musical imprint around the world continues to become more prominent, its artists now have a Grammy category all to themselves: Best African Music Performance.
“It makes sense, given that reggae or spoken word have their own categories,” says Gracey Mae, a U.K.-based PR and marketing consultant and Recording Academy member who co-authored the proposal for the award.

One day after former President Barack Obama revealed his yearly Favorite Movies list, he released a counterpart “Favorite Music of 2023” roster.
One notable inclusion here is “Road To Freedom” by Lenny Kravitz from the film Rustin, which Obama had on yesterday’s Favorite Movies list. Rustin was produced by Higher Ground, the production company founded by the former president and wife Michelle Obama.

Taylor Swift was the big winner at the 2023 MTV VMAs, including the top award of the night Video of the Year for “Anti-Hero.” The singer-songwriter had the odds in her favor as she was the most nominated artist of the night going into the award show with eight mentions.
Other winners of the night included Shakira with the Video Vanguard Award as well as Best Duo alongside Karol G for their song “Tqg.” Anitta took Best Latin for “Funk Rave,” while Nicki Minaj won the Best Hip-Hop trophy for “Super Freaky Girl.”
Diddy also took the stage to perform some of his hits and to accept the Global Icon Award.
