Lucy Liu was honored with the Legend award at the third annual Gold House Gold Gala on Saturday in Los Angeles.
Liu delivered a passionate speech after accepting the award from Regina King. “What I love about Regina is that she always makes choices that are for her,” Liu told the audience. “When I started over 30 years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices that I could make for myself.”
Liu — whose credits include “Ally McBeal,” “Elementary,” “Kill Bill Vol. 1,” “Charlie’s Angels” and Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence” — talked about having to make casting decisions “because of limitations.” She said, “I love that we are all here tonight because there is no ceiling, and I’ve never seen that for myself. I want us to all collectively understand how special this moment is that we are together as a community. I share this award with you because you have lifted me up,...

“Storytelling, and the words that they put in their actors’ mouths. They’re just glorious,” declares Liam Cunningham when giving high praise to the creators of Netflix’s hit sci-fi drama “3 Body Problem.” The series was created by multiple Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” duo David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, who serve as co-creators and producers with writer/producer Alexander Woo (“True Blood”). For our recent webchat, Cunningham (who worked with Benioff and Weiss as Ser Davos Seaworth on “Game of Thrones”) adds, “it’s just wonderful! They aim so high with difficult storytelling that most normal people wouldn’t attempt to go near.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings made a solid $432 million when it opened in 2021. While that may look like a disappointing number on paper, the box office was still struggling massively in the closing months of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Regardless, with a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score, it remains one of Marvel Studios' best-reviewed Phase 4 titles and put Simu Liu on the map. Unfortunately, the character has been sidelined ever since and it's now been close to three years since we last saw Shang-Chi on our screens.
Destin Daniel Cretton is expected to helm a sequel - rumoured to be titled Shang-Chi and the Wreckage of Time - after moving on from Avengers 5. However, he's currently busy working on Disney+'s Wonder Man series, leaving us to wonder just how much of a priority the Shang-Chi follow-up is.

The performance was spellbinding as it left everyone at the ceremony grooving to the mellifluous voice of the Blue Valentine actor. Safe to say, that the actor had stole the show on the Oscars stage by being Ken.

Even though the Marvel Cinematic Universe is incredibly secretive with Avengers 5, just like every other one of its projects, leaks about the casting for the movie seem to be popping up nonetheless. This comes after the renowned industry scooper Daniel Richtman recently threw in some reported details about which superheroes could be seen in the 2026-scheduled film.
Marvel Cinematic Universe
While fans were expecting to hear a lot of names from all the new superheroes introduced by the MCU, they were inevitably disappointed after Richtman revealed Kevin Feige’s plan for the next installment in the Avengers saga. This is because, according to those reports, Pedro Pascal and the remaining of the new Fantastic Four gang will reportedly not appear in the movie — at all.

The name of the Oppenheimer star is strongly associated with dramas and thrillers, as these genres seem to fit Cillian Murphy best. The actor’s performances are often chillingly stone-cold with him usually playing strong-willed powerful characters, so it’s hard to imagine him smiling or awkwardly joking on the big screen.
However, there is a 2007 hidden gem, which proves Murphy belongs to the genre of comedy and presents him in quite an unexpected role. There he portrayed a quirky video store owner Neil, a cinephil who spends a lot of time living through the movies.
As typical for romcoms, his routine changes when the mysterious Violet walks both into his store and his life. She starts to show him the real world which shines bright behind the movie screen and leads him down a risky road of petty crime.
This movie is obviously worth a watch for Cillian Murphy’s performance.

Marvel Studios has several projects in the making bound to be released over the course of the next few years. Despite Iger’s recent comments that the studio should focus on quality over quantity and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ being the only movie to release in 2024, they see no signs of stopping.
Now that the strike has cleared up, there are some projects that have been stuck in development hell for quite some time now, and some projects that need to be rushed in order for the MCU timeline to make sense without too many edits. It’s time for these projects to move on with the production.
One of these projects notable to be in development for years at this point is certainly Don Cheadle’s ‘Armor Wars.’ ‘Armor Wars’ was imagined to be a movie based on the comic storyline of the same name, and it was supposed to...

Despite recent comments from Iger advocating for prioritizing quality over quantity and with only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ slated for release in 2024, Marvel Studios shows no signs of slowing down.
With the strike resolved, projects that have long been stuck in development limbo are finally moving forward, and others must be expedited to maintain coherence in the MCU timeline. It’s time for these projects to advance in production.
One long-awaited project is Don Cheadle’s ‘Armor Wars.’ Initially conceived as a movie following the comic storyline of the same name, it was intended as a sequel to ‘Secret Invasion’ (released last year) and ‘Ironheart’ (release date currently unknown). Don Cheadle himself confirmed back in 2011 that a War Machine film was in the works, with Joe Robert Cole hired as the writer. Now, according to NexusPoint News, filming for the project is set to commence in January 2025 in the United Kingdom and Atlanta.

Jennifer Lopez confronts her mistrust of technology to battle artificial intelligence villain Harlan, played by Simu Liu, in the latest trailer for Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi movie Atlas.
In the first trailer for Atlas, Lopez’s data-driven counter-terrorism analyst Atlas Shepherd first showed her deep distrust of AI when disaster strikes. But the new trailer sees Liu introduced as the AI character Harlan, whom Atlas has long hunted and is now shown to have nearly ended humanity after first being engineered to advance it.
So to save the the future of humanity from AI, Atlas, in the latest teaser trailer, learns to trust AI. As dystopian, ground-pounding carnage dominates the trailer, Lopez rockets off to a far-off planet to capture a renegade robot and teams up with a computer program named Smith in what appears, at times, like buddy comedy.

College can be a time of great change in one's life: going it alone for the first time in training for the real world. The inclusion of the year in the title of Liu Jian's third feature “Art College 1994” is necessary in that it sets the scene for a changing time in China in terms of pop culture and, of course, art.
Art College 1994 is screening this Friday, April 26 in Metrograph, for an exclusive Week-Long NY Theatrical Run
Two roommates, Xiaojun (Dong Zijian) and Zhifei (Chizi) are art students who spend their days procrastinating, discussing the philosophy of art and the changing scene from classic to Western-influenced modern. Similarly, vocal student Hong (Papi) and piano student Lili (Zhou Dongyu) discuss their futures and possible marriages.

There’s a beautiful scene in Jia Zhangke’s 2004 film The World in which the protagonist, Tao, crosses paths with an industrial worker nicknamed Little Sister on the rooftop of an unfinished building. They chat aimlessly beneath towering spires of exposed rebar until a massive plane soars overhead, drowning out their voices. “Tao, who flies on those planes?” he asks, to which she responds, “Who knows…I don’t know anybody who’s ever been on a plane.”
It’s this precise contrast of stasis and flux, of the sublime and the quotidian, of simple personal dreams swallowed up by massive national ambitions, that characterizes Liu Jian’s newest feature, Art College 1994. Jia also lends his voice to one of its characters: Gu Yongqing, a “roving artist abroad” who speaks of “the mysterious power of art” during a visiting lecture at the titular art college. There won’t be much by way of Marvel this year with Deadpool & Wolverine being their only significant release. Additionally, the company is seeking to rebound from a year of poorly received works like The Marvels and Secret Invasion, plus their shocking overhaul of Daredevil: Born Again, as well as their rising star Jonathan Majors getting released from his role as Kang amid his legal controversy. While Kevin Feige was able to showcase some “f*cking amazing” footage of Deadpool & Wolverine at CinemaCon this year, Marvel’s only other big bit of news in recent months came in the shape of The Fantastic Four.
This past phase for Marvel Studios attempted to set up the new roster of heroes, which would be standing in the way of Kang for the new Avengers movies. The new generation included Shang-Chi from the 2021 movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton was previously attached to Avengers: Kang Dynasty before stepping down to concentrate on Shang-Chi 2. Marvel Studios and Disney have several projects in the works, despite recent statements about scaling back due to mixed results. Among these projects is the sequel to ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.’ Development on the sequel began in December 2021, with director and writer Cretton and star Liu expected to return. Liu has expressed interest in further exploring his character’s journey and his role in the MCU.
However, as of July 2023, Liu was unsure about the sequel’s production timeline, mentioning it was scheduled for release after ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,’ which had been pushed back to 2026 and renamed in the meantime.
Recently, there have been rumors circulating about the start of production for ‘Shang-Chi 2’ in 2025, but these are just rumors with no official confirmation. Marvel Studios hasn’t given much attention to the movie in their official announcements, especially with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ nearing release and ‘Fantastic Four’ gaining unexpected attention.

Cixin Liu’s 3 Body Problem trilogy was considered unadaptable, but D.B. Weiss, David Benioff and Alexander Woo did it for Netflix. Even though Season 1 is streaming, that doesn’t mean they’ve solved Season 2. The trio joined Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday to discuss the adaptation, and Weiss explained why continuing the show poses even more creative problems.
“This kind of eases you into the world of the story but the story gets really wild in the best possible way,” Weiss said. “With something that’s that wild, there are a lot of choices to be made and a lot of things to be figured out. We’ve been putting our heads together to figuring them out recently especially the past couple months.”
3 Body Problem involves scientists from around the world discovering a virtual reality video game which leads them to another intergalactic species. The story spans past and present.

John Oliver spotlighted Simu Liu and John Boyega on Last Week Tonight for their beginnings as stock photo models.
In the last segment of the HBO show, Oliver talked about stock photos, noting that that’s how the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars got their start.
“Stock photos provide an income stream, not just for photographers, but also for actors starting out,” Oliver said.
Oliver cut to a photo of Boyega in a picture posing as a student. The late-night show host then presented Liu with a series of photos “pointing at a laptop, looking at the camera during a group project and exercising in a totally normal, not at all unhinged way.” Oliver was poking fun at the way Liu was posing while seemingly exercising for the picture.

In physics, the three-body problem is ugly. When you have one or two objects exerting gravity on a body, it moves in a predictable pattern. Add a third and its chaos.
In 2024, the three-body problem in media is that every piece of art has a creator, a consumer and politics. So when Netflix’s sci-fi series 3 Body Problem debuted on March 21, anti-woke crusaders such as VCs Marc Andreessen and Andrew Chen only made it one scene in before posting that it was a cri de coeur to end the far-left agenda. Two days after the show dropped, Chen, a Vc at a16z, posted on X, “The opening scene just punches you in the face. Irl cancel culture driven by high school and college students. Science and academia becoming politicized. Tearing down the past. Etc.” A day later, his boss Andreessen posted similar thoughts.

Submerged below the surface of pirate history on the South China Sea lies a deeply emotional and captivating tale of survival. Cheng Shih, a woman seemingly forgotten by history, lived on these tropical and often tempestuous waters, using her intelligence and cunningness to become one of the greatest leaders in this part of the world. Her story is one of progression, succession, and courage, which is inspiring in the face of a brutal and often violent portion of the 19th century.

Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution was one of the deadliest periods in Chinese history for those in the scientific and technological community. Fueled by the desire to remove all forms of Western influence, Mao’s Red Guards destroyed laboratories, burned scientific literature, and executed or incarcerated scientists. It was a dark and troublesome decade for many people, including for acclaimed science fiction author Cixin Liu. Liu was only three when the political upheaval began, but remembers the gunshots and the Red Guards patrolling the streets. This distressing decade plays a pivotal role in his 2008 Hugo Award-winning novel, The Three-Body Problem.

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” and Cixin Liu’s “Three-Body Problem,” the book on which it is based.]
Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” is based on a wildly popular book series by Cixin Liu — but how close does it come to the source material? Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have experience adapting dense novels with “Game of Thrones” — but they’ve also been in the position of having to branch away from the original text and disappointing audiences as a result. “3 Body Problem,” which they co-created and executive produce with Alexander Woo, could face the same issues.
The sci-fi drama begins with a woman named Ye Wenjie, whose father is killed during the Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 1960s. David Benioff and D. B. Weiss of Game of Thrones fame divulged details about their latest Netflix outing, 3 Body Problem, and how they intend to handle its future. The duo, who’ve had experiences with dabbling in prestige television, have been joined by Alexander Woo as the series showrunners of the live-action adaptation of Liu Cixin’s uber-successful Chinese novel The Three-Body Problem.

In a recent interview, these creatives at the show’s helm revealed how they mapped out the show’s trajectory in coming seasons since there is enough material to prompt future installments. The Three-Body Problem is the first in Liu’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy of novels, with the second and third having more to offer.
With the creators having a more concrete vision of how to approach the source, fans could (potentially) expect to avoid another Game of Thrones fiasco.

Cixin Liu’s The Three-Body Problem is a tour de force of hard science fiction, but its deep dive into physics in passages that sometimes contain large information dumps must have been a true adaptation challenge to 3 Body Problem creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. Fortunately, the writers were able to humanize the narrative by creating “the Oxford Five,” a group of scientist friends that divided the experiences of the novel’s single main character among them to create a more dynamic story filled with conflict, love, tragedy, and more.
The decision no doubt went beyond simply lending more emotional weight to the actions of the show’s protagonists; it also served to broaden the story from a singular Chinese experience that was the author’s focus to a more international, less male-centered perspective. Instead of merely following Professor Wang Miao,...

“3 Body Problem” entered 2024 as one of the year’s most anticipated new TV shows. Four days before it begins streaming on Netflix, it’s already one of the most polarizing.
The first new series produced by former “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as part of their overall deal with Netflix, the adaptation of Cixin Liu’s trilogy of sci-fi novels takes place across five continents as scientists work together to understand the way decisions made in the 1960s now pose existential threats to the planet.
The show premiered with a buzzy opening night screening at SXSW, but the first episodes elicited a divisive response from audiences. Despite praising the series for its ambitious scale, many critics felt that it was too esoteric to elicit real emotion.
