Mrs. Doubtfire is one iconic film, cherished as a beloved gem that transcends generations to this date. It can now undoubtedly be said that Robin Williams didn’t just deliver a remarkable performance in the film, he also forged genuine connections with the kids, blurring the lines between reel and real life. Williams’ genuine connection with his young co-stars was evident when he came to the aid of one of them, who was expelled from school during filming.

The Fall of the House of Usher is the last of Mike Flanagan's Netflix projects, and also his darkest one. Inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe, the show tells the story of the rise of Roderick Usher as the head of a powerful pharmaceutical company, and the fall of his family as each one of Roderick's children dies a horrible death. Flanagan says his goodbyes to the streamer with what is by far the bloodiest of his shows, one that constantly features gruesome imagery and gnarly deaths that impart judgment on its characters. The result is one of the best shows of 2023, one worth revisiting as the year comes to a close — especially because of its cast.

It seems like a rich guy is in the news every other day, doing something funny or perplexing or downright horrible. Over the course of this year, we all watched Elon Musk acquire one of the world’s most powerful social media sites and then, instead of making the user experience better than it was, mold it into his own image, censoring any language and people he didn’t like. More recently, entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried, who was once counted among the richest people in the country in the Forbes 400, gambled on a fraud-ridden crypto exchange whose exposure and bankruptcy may send him to prison for decades. Six years ago, we had a famously wealthy businessman and TV personality as president who nearly drove us toward a nuclear conflict.

Spooky season is almost upon us, and that can mean only one thing. No, not how excited we are to start ordering Pumpkin Spice lattes, tasty as they may be – it’s new Mike Flanagan time, people! "The Fall of the House of Usher" is a new live-action, horror drama TV miniseries created by Mike Flanagan, based on an 1839 short story and other works by author Edgar Allan Poe, streaming October 12, 2023 on Netflix:
"....the story is narrated by a childhood friend of 'Roderick Usher', the owner of the 'Usher' mansion. This friend is riding to the house, having been summoned by Roderick Usher, a gifted poet and artist, having complained in his letter that he is suffering from some illness and expressing a hope that seeing his old friend will lift his spirits.
" When he arrives, the narrator finds a gloomy and vaguely menacing atmosphere, and his friend, Usher, is much changed since he last saw him: overly sensitive to every sound and sight, and prone to dramatic mood swings.

Mike Flanagan, the master of soulful horror whose previous Netflix series include "The Haunting of Hill House," "The Haunting of Bly Manor," "Midnight Mass," and "The Midnight Club," is returning this year with a mix of familiar cast members and fresh faces for "The Fall of the House of Usher." Though it takes its name from the short story by Edgar Allan Poe, the series is set in the modern era and incorporates a number of other Poe tales.
Netflix has built up a solid library of original horror series, from mega-hit "Stranger Things" to lesser-recognized gems like "Marianne." Following the success of "The Haunting Hill House," Netflix inked a multi-year overall television deal with Flanagan and his longtime producing partner, Trevor Macy. The pair were poached by Amazon in December 2022, so "The Fall of the House of Usher" will be the last "Flana-verse" show to arrive on Netflix for the foreseeable future.

"Stranger Things" might be Netflix's flagship show, but it turns out that Mike Flanagan's "The Haunting of Hill House" is another crown jewel for the streamer. As you may already know, streamers don't release numbers as a general rule, but "Hill House" was known to be a big hit for Netflix upon release. Both critic and viewer ratings were through the roof and independent polling from Parrot Analytics in 2018 found the limited series was keeping pace with massive, long-running network horror shows like "The Walking Dead" and "American Horror Story."
But you just need to look at where Netflix put their money to tell you how big that show was for them. They went right into a spiritual sequel, "The Haunting of Bly Manor" and then greenlit "The Fall of the House of Usher" from the same Flanaverse team right after that. Netflix has slated Thursday, October 12, for the premiere of The Fall of the House of Usher, its eight-episode limited series from Mike Flanagan based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The streamer also released some of the first images of the series, which you can see above and below.
Starring Bruce Greenwood, who replaced Frank Langella as the lead back in April 2022 after Langella was fired following a misconduct investigation, the series is described as an epic tale of greed, horror and tragedy. Poe’s short story The Fall of the House of Usher, which serves as the basis for the show, features themes of madness, family, isolation and identity.
